Bloomberg Confirms Disney+ As The Third Most Watched Streaming Platform For Kids Content While Discussing Cartoon Network's Depressing State After Discovery Buyout.
This morning the journalist website Bloomberg posted a article of the current state of Cartoon Network and Warner Bros Discovery struggle to attract kids consumers to it's platforms and channels like Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and the streaming service Max.
The company recently decided that children’s programming is no longer a core part of Max’s strategy with the service being just for unscripted content and dramas, further clouding Cartoon Network’s prospects. with the animation hub only for the service being for Adult Swim and Anime.
However Bloomberg's article about Cartoon Network's current and depressing state mentions that Disney+ is the third most watched platform within kids behind Netflix & Youtube.
Warner Bros Discovery no longer sees MAX as a channel for kids and young audiences; only 13% of people between 10 and 12 years old watch MAX ( 57% of the kids audiences watch Disney+, and 72% Netflix with 90% watching Youtube).
This is not surprising as last April, The Walt Disney Company mentioned that Disney Channel recently became "the leading destination for kids and family content" with hits like Big City Greens, Bluey (which Bloomberg reveals that Cartoon Network tried to buy the broascasting and streaming rights for the now defunct Cartoonito block), Kiff, ZOMBIES, Descendants, Primos, The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, Mickey Mouse Funhouse, Sofia The First, Spidey And His Amazing Friends, Amphibia, Pupstruction, SuperKitties, Robogobo, StuGo, Chibiverse, and Phineas And Ferb
The mouse owned service recently has a big pipeline in the coming months in terms of kids and family content with the premieres of ZOMBIES 4 : Dawn Of Vampires, the Phineas And Ferb revival, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, Iron Man And His Awesome Friends, The Doomies, Dragon Striker, Vampirina, How We Became The Biggest Band In The World, a revival of Malcom In The Middle, a holiday movie starring The Jonas Brothers, Hey A.J! and Magicampers.
This will continue with the premieres of Descendants: Wicked Wonderland, The Sunnyridge 3, Sofia The First: Royal Magic and Tiny Trailblazers in 2026. Disney will also release a theatrical animated Bluey film in 2027.
Additionaly for the past 5 months Disney Careers website has been hiring for 6 new Disney Television Animation animated series for Disney Channel, Disney Jr. and Disney+ with the Disney Branded Television unit developing new live-action interations of Holes, Gargoyles and W.I.T.C.H. for a new generation of fans.
According to Bloomberg, "Warner Bros. Discovery continues to rent out pieces of its historic inventory as it keeps paying down debt. Along the way, most of Cartoon Network’s past shows have been pulled from Max, either shelved to save money on upkeep costs such as residual payments to writers and actors or licensed out to other streaming services, primarily The Walt Disney Company's owned service Hulu."

Don't Touch That Remote! We'll Be Right Back!

















Cable TV......what a time! Before streaming services made its way into today's society, people were exposed to the wonders of television that aired at specific times. You either had to be there exactly when your shows came on or you had to record them so you could watch later. Cable TV has had tons of channels targeted at kids to enjoy providing fun shows through animation, live action, puppetry, stop motion, CGI, and so much more. It even sparked interest in other age demographics like teens, college students, and adults. Even if you didn't have cable, there were a few channels who were happy to please your eyes like PBS Kids. Now, I grew up watching multiple channels through my TV and no, it did not rot my brain! It's a myth! There were actually plenty of shows that provided education while still being enjoyable as well as memorable. Things that I do adore through cable were the exciting marathons of your favorite shows, new episodes that came out on Saturday Mornings, and the occasional holiday specials during Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, Halloween, etc. I can still see a handful of shows I used to watch through streaming platforms, but I'll never forget the feeling I had while watching everything live with silly commercials and promos for future shows and movies to look out for. Also, the quote that's been rammed into everyone's head:
"Hey! Don't touch that remote! We'll be right back after these messages!"

Such digital demolitions are becoming routine. For fans and scholars of pop culture, 2024 may go down as the year the internet shrank. Despite the immense archiving capabilities of the internet, we’re living through an age of mass deletion, a moment when entertainment and media corporations see themselves not as custodians of valuable cultural history, once freely available, but as ruthless maximisers of profit. Those of us who believe in the historical value of accessing media from the past are paying the price. Consider how much digital damage has been done in recent months. That same June, the archives of the now-defunct MTVNews.com, which served as a monument to nearly three decades of music journalism, went dark without warning. Then, in August, Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) scrubbed the contents of Cartoon Network’s video-heavy website, a portal of clips and show episodes that had existed since 1998 and that now redirects to Max (formerly HBO Max). For that last decision, we can thank WBD’s chief, David Zaslav, a man who personifies a generation of entertainment executives who don’t particularly seem to like movies or television, judging by how quickly they will shelve or delete the products of their studios, if it saves a few bucks.Under Zaslav, Max has removed several of its original movies, reportedly to access tax write-downs, as the studio reportedly faced debts of $3bn. And he has pioneered the dark art of shelving films instead of releasing them, a brave new world of Hollywood chicanery. This was the case with Batgirl, a movie that had already entered post-production when it was cancelled, to take advantage of a “purchase accounting” manoeuvre. Similarly, WBD opted to shelve Coyote vs Acme, a completed film that had performed well with test audiences, in order to claim a $30m tax write-off. There are fears that once such a project is shelved indefinitely, the studio may eventually destroy it.

I think Game of Thrones damaged collective expectations for television media and is the reason for the decline of full length low budget seasons.
We all know HBO is high budget cable even before, but Game of Thrones was arguably the first time one of their shows became so massively, globally successful. People who had never consumed fantasy media in their lives were watching Game of Thrones. It became mainstream culture rather than nerd culture so your coworkers weren’t going to make fun of you for liking it. In fact, your coworkers probably watched it too.
Before this the only TV shows that achieved anywhere close to this level of popularity (and even then were not nearly as popular as Game of Thrones) were network shows, usually TV comedies. These were low budget and had full seasons! Things like HIMYM, Big Bang Theory, The Office. You either watched them or knew multiple people who watched them. Sometimes TV dramas also reached this level of popularity—Shondaland shows to name a few. Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder. Even if you didn’t watch them, you had heard of them. These were also network shows. Low budgets, 22 episodes. Not to mention network television is FREE so it has the potential to reach a much wider audience than cable.
But Game of Thrones exploded into common popularity. Even people who didn’t watch much television watched Game of Thrones. And you know what they had because it’s an HBO show? Insanely high budgets and 10 episode seasons. They were basically making ten short movies released as TV seasons. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that itself, it worked well for Game of Thrones. The problem is how its affected television production since then. Sure shorter seasons and miniseries have existed before, but it feels like they’ve been in an upward trend ever since Game of Thrones
Every studio with a streaming service wants to create the next mega popular phenomenon like Game of Thrones so they copy the formula. Big budget, shorter seasons. Quality over quantity. But in doing so they neglected the main format television has used for quite a while. Network seasons are fewer and far between with smaller budgets and shorter seasons so they can invest more in the high budget shows. And a few of them were good, but somewhere along the way, they lost sight of the quality part and throw microbudgets at shows for six episode runs and are surprised when no one gets invested after only six episodes when we used to get 22 episodes and since no one’s watching anyway they just cancel it without giving the show a chance to find its legs. If it happens to get a lucky with a second season but there’s not EXPONENTIAL growth in viewership? Cancelled. Why is no one watching tv anymore? Why does no one want to pay for our streaming service that releases maybe one show you like every other year? Why why why they ask when they ruined a perfectly good formula and make things less and less accessible
