Since its arrival on Broadway in 1972, Grease has been the Word in more than 3300 Broadway performances, had 27 productions worldwide, made its way to the big screen as a feature film, been revived on Broadway twice, and has greased and graced the boards of high school stages around the country more times than Betty Rizzo has dated and broken up with Kenickie.

  Now the Class of 1959 from Rydell High has arrived at the Mac-Haydn Theater, with all the rock & roll sound, romance , and teen-age angst one could want on a hot summer night at the theatre.  Director/Choreographer Sebastiani Romagnolo has put his mark on a production that does fair justice to both the original stage production and the wildly-popular 1978 feature film with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the lead roles. What the production may lack in depth, it more than makes up for in enthusiasm and performance value. There is little if any of the raw, edgy language and tone that characterized original versions; while teenage pregnancy, gang violence, and pressure to conform lurk subtly on the edges of this production, they are to some degree “glossed over” in favour of bringing the flavor of 50s adolescence and music to the stage. And frankly, there’s nothing wrong with that, because what they do with this production of Grease, they do with all the expertise, quality, and theatre-goers have come to expect—and receive—from a Mac- Haydn production. As it centers around the romantic inclinations of greaser Burger Palace leader Danny Zuko and new-girl-at-school Sandy Dumbrowski, this Grease is 2 ½ hours of foot-tapping, sing-along, sit- back- and -enjoy musical theatre.

       Anthony DaSilva is spending his first season at Mac-Haydn, and in the lead role of Danny Zuko, he takes to the round stage as if born to it. With just the slightest channeling of John Travolta (which may be totally unintended, as the film was released well before DaSilva came into the world),  he struts into the cafeteria and leads the Burger Palace Boys through their paces, while alternately wooing and ignoring the new girl in school. He has the voice for the role–and then some !– and while disappointed that the song “Sandy” was substituted for “ Alone at a drive-in movie” there’s no denying DaSilva carries off Danny with power, panache, and presence. His voice rises above ensemble numbers, as it should as the leader of the pack. Let’s hope to see and hear more of this up and coming star as the season continues.

    Emma Flynn in her second season with the Mac-Haydn company is an ideal  choice for the innocent, naive Sandy, taken in hand and under the collective wing of the Pink Ladies at Rydell High on her first day of school, where she quickly discovers the love of her just past “Summer Nights”  is Rydell student Danny Zuko. Flynn has a beautiful pure voice, with stage presence to match. Watching her journey from the wide-eyed ingenue who ultimately allows herself, admittedly at her own request, to be transformed to the bad-girl of Danny’s wildest hopes and dreams is a delight.  “Hopelessly Devoted to you” adroitly channels Olivia Newton-John, which is almost inevitable, as this too is a number “slotted in” to the stage version from its original appearance in the film. Her final solo reprising “Look at me I’m Sandra Dee” is filled with regret, resignation, and ultimately acceptance of her new role as a pure Pink Lady, and her final duet with DaSilva of “You’re the one that I want” literally shakes the rafters of this barn-cum-theatre in the round. A side note on that particular number.In general I am not a fan of music and songs from movie versions being, sometimes, summarily inserted into stage productions, but in this production I must confess it works to great effect, and was probably the better choice than “All Choked Up” was in the original production.

  Grease is an ideal production for an ensemble cast, which undoubtedly is why it is so often performed in schools, summer stock, and community theatres. Offering a variety of supporting roles for Pink Ladies and Burger Palace Boys makes it a perfect vehicle for the Mac.  Much of the pleasure in this thoroughly-enjoyable production comes from the quality of performance springing from the supporting cast.numbers. Loaded with all the energy of the assembled youthful cast , the stage almost literally shakes, rattles and rolls every time a member of the ensemble gets their turn in the spotlight. Virtually every character is given a featured turn and they make the most of it, with spot-on vocals and solid, committed performances. While none of the numbers are show-stoppers, they perform them as if they are. And so several all deserve their own moments of praise….

  As Doody,  Kylan Ross’s  rendition of “ Those Magic Changes”  earns him an A+ for his spot-on vocals regaling the gang with his mastery of 4 guitar chords learned over the summer. Perhaps my favorite song in the show, I confess to adding my own A, C, F, and G chords to the melody line , no doubt to the misfortune of those sitting within earshot.

Elizabeth D’Aiuto makes the most of her turn as Marty, as she lets her slumber-party Pink Lady guests learn all about “Freddy, My love”, who showers her with gifts sent from his overseas military service. A rogue Twinkie suffers a crushing fate as the Pink Ladies dancingly celebrate the benefits of young love, but D’Aiuto carries off her number with aplomb and vocal accuracy.

       Now, “Greased Lightning”, perhaps the song most associated with Grease…. While Jonah Hale’s lyrics in his portrayal of Kenickie are at times indistinct, or perhaps simply overwhelmed by a band clearly eager to rock and roll the theatre, there is no denying Hale’s enthusiasm as he presents this signature number. He leaps with abandon, sings with gusto, and overall makes us hope for a ride in his cherished automatic, systematic, fuel-injected, chrome-plated rod baby.  Especially impressive is the lighting that accompanies the number—black light, strobe effect, and splashes of vibrant color punctuate this paean to every teen age boy’s dream in the 50s…THE perfect car.

       As Roger and Jan, Joe Hornberger and Zoey Bright inject a lovely dose of almost over the top camp with their rendition of “Mooning”, as Roger musically and physically demonstrates the reason “the guys” have nicknamed him “Rump”  Fortunately for this family-friendly show, he stops short of a “full” explanation, but not before the audience enjoys their rollicking rocking tribute to the fine art of mooning.

  Maya Cuevas shines as Frenchy, the “Beauty School Dropout” nonchalantly attempting to pierce Sandy’s ears while the Pink Ladies smoke and drink at Marty’s slumber party. Her wide-eyed looks of astonishment, and subsequent reactions when her called-upon Teen Angel appears in silver lame, accompanied by a plastic cosmetic cape-draped, sun-glass -wearing Angel Chorus quartet, are worth the price of admission. 

    Last but by no means least of the supporting cast deserving of more than honorable mention is Angie Colonna as the hard as nails self-appointed Head of the Pink Ladies Betty Rizzo.  Sashaying onto the teen scene with a hip-swiveling swagger, Colonna creates the brittle Rizzo personna necessary to play against the sweetness and light of the soon-to-be converted, or subverted, Sandy. Her mocking “Look at me I’m Sandra Dee” in Act 1 is played with nuance and a curled lip; her voice is big, bold, and in perfect keeping with the character. In Act 2, as she reluctantly, angrily, and ultimately tearfully confronts Sandy’s attempts to sympathize with her possibly pregnancy, she declares “There are worse things I could do” with a combination of pathos and defiance that brings perhaps the loudest applause of the evening for a featured performance.

            Wearing his choreographer’s hat, director Romagnolo brings to Grease the signature style that brought him a Berkie Award in 2017. Lithe, sinewy, sometimes almost writhing dance movements infuse much of the dance work throughout the show, and capture in motion the burgeoning craze for rock and roll that was sweeping the nation in the 50s.  Romagnolo stages the assorted ensemble numbers throughout the show with verve and punch. The close of Act 1 brings the energy-charged cast into “We go Together” with rousing hand-slapping, clapping abandon performed in perfect synchronization , and as the cast comes together in “Born to Hand Jive”, the relatively small round stage pounds and  pulses with the gyrations of the dance. Could another Berkie be waiting in the wings…..?

       Scenic designer Kevin Gleason  brings home a Grade A report card for his set work and design.   The black and white checkerboard floor, punctuated with squares of turquoise and pink is the perfect setting for the classic formica tables and chairs that do triple duty as cafeteria, classroom and Burger Palace diner; draped with black leather jackets and hot pink Pink Lady jackets, the set immediately transports the audience back to the 50s before the first musical note. The collection of 50’s memorabilia and ephemera adorning the walls and the stage. Vintage vinyl 45 records, pink flamingos, guitars . From the wall-mounted rotary dial corded phone to the portable transistor radios and metal coolers, every item evokes the now-classic style of the 50s. It’s just a FUN set to look at throughout the show.

     Lighting by Andrew Gmoser complements and enhances the 50s “vibe”  of diners, high school classrooms and cafeteria, teen age girls’ bedrooms, and the occasional outdoor setting in the park or backstreets of Chicago. There is a generous use of color throughout, and happily, the use of a strobe light is forewarned with notices at each entrance to the house , as well as used judiciously and sparingly. 

  Costumes by Alison Zador capture the era of poodle skirts, greaser “bad boys” with their leather jackets, tight jeans and white-shirts, and bouffant hair and prom dresses. 

  While perhaps not the premiere offering of the season, Grease is more than worth a look, perhaps even 2, as one of my companions noted on a full-house opening night    “ I’d see this one again.” Hopefully Producing Artistic Director John Saunders would be quick to declare that “you’re the one that I want “ to make a Summer Night’s journey to Chatham for this production.

Like New Again! Restoring a 1980 Malibu Wagon Interior

Using Dixie Restoration Depot’s OEM G-body parts, we rebuild our Malibu Wagon’s Interior.

The G-body Malibu drips with ’80s flair, so we’ve opted to highlight the original look and feel en lieu of a stripped-down racecar interior. We said in our first installment that as we grow older, we require more amenities from our hot rods. So, despite our road racer underpinnings (UMI suspension and Wilwood brakes), our Malibu will remain a family-friendly, carpeted, upholstered wagon. To that end, this month we’re refurbishing the Malibu’s interior with a combination of junkyard parts and items from Dixie Restoration.

Our Malibu was purchased out of a field in North Carolina. There are many custom touches like a cut-up radio face, aftermarket speakers, and a dangerous hardwired push-start button. The dash was thoroughly cracked and faded too—time for an overhaul.

We start by gutting the seats, carpet, and address hidden issues underneath the worn interior, namely, the rust. The floorboards are thin in places, but instead of replacing them, we used Eastwood Rust Converter aerosol (part No. 51483Z; $21.99) to convert the rust to a paintable surface, and then we covered it with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator (part No. 16060Z; $21.99). We applied the same method to the rust on the inside, the bottom of the doors, and then topped it with a white spray bomb. With the door panels off, we cleaned out the inside of the doors and opened the drain holes. We also fixed busted A/C vents, broken door handles, and lubed the window tracks with white lithium grease.

The dash is easy to remove with two bolts on either lower side above the kick panels and screws in the top and center vents. Removing the gauge cluster takes patience and a lot of labeled bags for screws and bolts. There are two bolts behind the gauges. It’s not necessary to pull the dash out to simply replace the cover, but we decided to anyway.

Before installing the carpet, we installed Summit Racing heat and sound-deadening mats inside the doors, on the floor pans, and underneath the car (part No. SUM-879020; $119.99). We laid out our Painless Wiring LS1 swap harness too (part No. 60508; $549.99). We plan to mount the computer and harness in a hidden, homebuilt compartment under the back seat.

The cracks in the dash create high spots, which we knocked down with a 3M Scotch-Brite pad on an air grinder. We trimmed roughly 1/8 inch off the outside top edges to get a more snug fit.

Dixie Restoration Depot also supplied us with a beautiful four-door upholstery set. It’s blue cloth with vinyl accents, and retains the plush ’80s look and factory 50/50 bench (part No. DM03222 NAVYNAVY; $512.95). The seat upholstery will be featured in a future installment. The almost-finished interior even smells better—at least until we stink it up with road-trip snacks on Power Tour!

Complete dashes retail for $1,299.95, so a dash cover is much more economical for a daily driver (part No. DM00057 DARKBLUE; $164.95). We test fit it multiple times to get it as snug as possible.

The dash includes enough silicone adhesive to stick, but we decided to go the extra mile and pick up a larger tube of silicone. We also shot the edges of the original dash with a little paint in case there’s any overhang.

We gathered all of our straps, C-clamps, bar clamps, and paint paddles from around the garage. If silicone makes contact with the new dash pad it’ll leave a long-lasting glossy stain, so we cover all the edges in painter’s tape for easy cleanup.

We sandwiched the base of the firewall and the floorplans with the metal/rubber Summit heat and sound-deadening mats (part No. SUM-879020; $119.99). There are nine 32 x 18 sheets in the pack. We also used Summit’s sound absorbing thermal insulating foam (part No. SUM-879025; $59.99) with two ½-inch thick, 23 x 36 pieces to help shape the new carpet. Between the two types, we had leftover material.

Our new Auto Custom Carpets (ACC) carpet from Dixie Restoration (part No. DM01173 DARKBLUE; $219.95) is form-fitted for wagons and four-doors, making for a simple installation. We left it in the sun for the afternoon, but it still needs some massaging into place. We plan to glue it after it settles a little more.

Now the dash is clean and ready to go in. The dash is accompanied by a pair of windshield post lower trim pieces (part No. DM01994 DARKBLUE; $48.00), these mount between the edge of the dash and the door pillars.

One of our favorite elements of the Painless engine harness is the OBD-II port, which mounts under the new dash. We’re using HP Tuners new small OBD-II plug. The orange light on the left is the check engine light.

We were lucky enough to source our weather-stripping, carpet, and seat coverings from Dixie, however, there are many wagon-specific items unavailable in the aftermarket, namely, door panels and pillar trim, so we disassemble the panels, and restored the components.

The lower door panel plastic was crumbling away. We sourced a used one from a four-door in a junkyard for $70, along with new sill plates, pull-handles, and miscellaneous trim. We wet-sanded all plastic pieces with 400-grit sandpaper and then wiped them down with Summit Racing Surface Cleaner.

Luckily, the upper door panels are in good enough shape to clean. Ignoring a couple minor tears, we disassembled the panels and scrubbed all of the cloth with a very light coating of Purple Power Degreaser. Be very careful though, as cleaners like this can remove paint or dye, and it’s essential to get the cloth dry.

We shot the lower panels with Dixie Restoration Depot custom-mixed PPG paint. The quart (PN DM00081 DARKBLUE; $59.95) lays down nicely with our touch-up gun, which lasts longer than normal spray cans.

Finally, we cut the new carpet for the lower door panel. The original cloth, often referred to as Stretch Carpet, is hard to find. Genco Supplies, in High Point, N.C., offered a spool of Easy Flex for $26 a yard. It closely resembles the original.

It’s important to remember the little things. Dixie Restoration Depot offers the factory door panel clips at $5 a set for 20 (part No. DM01330). They simply rotate into place and snap into the door.

An often overlooked way to spruce up any vintage car is replacing the rubber trim around the windows. It’s crucial for these in our rear windows as the old rubber was cracked and mostly gone, meaning rainwater was filling the bottom of the doors.

To round off the final door panel rehab, we picked up new chrome trim for the pull handle (part No. DM00584; $39.95). All total, this door panel cost around $45 to refurbish. The paint has gone a long way, including covering the B-pillar trim. We also installed a pair of new kick panels (part No. DM00792 DARKBLUE; $105).

Our LS1 Swap harness has plenty of wire to mount our factory PCM where we want. We’re planning to install it on the rear floorboard under a dummy floor. Here, we cut a place in the carpet for the wires to sneak out under the bench seat.

The build and the Painless Harness have allowed us to trim away a ton of unnecessary wiring. Here’s the seat-belt buzzer we’ll eliminate as we will be using shoulder straps instead.

A significant plus for doing this rebuild is addressing minor annoyances, like a broken door handle and long pull from the other door handle thanks to a bent rod.

We prepped the surface with a wire brush and then used Aerosol Eastwood Rust Converter (part No. 51483Z; $21.99) to turn the rust into a paintable surface. While the metal is thin in places, we don’t deem it cost-effective to replace the floor pans.

We finished the floor pans with a top coat of Rust Encapsulator to keep the rust at bay.

We laaid a piece of the sound deadening material in place and cut it to shape. You can cover the entire floorboard, over the seat brackets, and transmission tunnel, but we want to save some for under the hood and in the doors.

We use a hardware-store plastic roller, but Summit recommends a sound deadener installation tool (part No. SUM-879041; $9.99).

This CB750 took three years to build—and it’s perfect

As soon as we laid eyes on this Honda CB cafe racer, we knew there was more to it than meets the eye. Mods like the mono-shock rear end and sleek bodywork had us curious—but the story behind the project turned out to be equally remarkable.

The Honda belongs to Mirko Messner, who builds under the moniker MessnerMoto. Mirko lives in Belgrade, Serbia, where he holds down a nine-to-five as a mobile app developer. He only worked on the CB750 after hours, so it took him a whopping three years to complete. And it’s his first build.

Then there’s how he built it. With limited time and hardware available, Mirko admits that he outsourced CNC machining, 3D printing and fabrication work to over 20 different individuals and companies—creating a few new friendships along the way.

To get that right and still maintain total creative control, he first taught himself 3D modeling software and researched mechanical engineering principles, before meticulously designing each part.

So Mirko acted as creative director, parts designer and project manager, and put everything together as the components rolled in. But he handled the mechanical duties himself, rebuilding the 1977-spec motor and boosting it with trick internal upgrades.

Inside you’ll find forged Wiseco pistons, bringing the capacity up to 836cc. There’s also a lightened and balanced crankshaft, a lighter flywheel from an 2009 Yamaha R6, and forged connecting rods. The full list is extensive, but other highlights include ported and polished heads, upgraded valves and springs, and a race cam.

The primary and cam chains are running on fully custom-made tensioners and sliders, CNC and laser cut from PA 4.6 polyamide plastic. Mirko says the mod has eliminated unwanted noise, upped power and given him more control over timing.

There’s also a new ignition system running four preprogrammed timing curves, which the rider can select via hidden switches. Even the oil pump rotors are upgraded, custom-made units.

A set of Mikuni RS34 race carbs sucks air through a custom filter setup. And when designing the exhaust system, Mirko had wooden bucks laser cut to spec; the final headers were then hand bent from stainless steel using the bucks.

The mufflers are custom too, and the whole system hangs off hidden mounting points on the frame. All in all, Mirko reckons there’s about 90 horses at the rear wheel now.

Naturally, the CB750’s also sporting a brand new electrical system. A Motogadget m.unit 2.0 is packed into a box underneath the seat, along with two Lithium-ion batteries. There’s a Motogadget dash up top too, but more notably there’s also a full complement of sensors in play, so that data like engine temperature, and oil temperature and pressure are on hand.

The charging system’s also been upgraded to a Yamaha R6 model; the engine cover on the alternator side had to be modified for everything to fit. For lighting, Mirko installed a 45w LED headlight with integrated turn signals up front, with custom-built taillight and turn signal combos embedded in the frame tubes out back.

Mirko has thankfully upgraded the chassis to match the Honda’s newfound performance. For starters, he’s ditched the forks for a set of upside-downs from a 2007 Suzuki GSX-R 750, attached via custom triples.

Then there’s that mono-shock rear end arrangement—built around a 1981 CB900 swing arm with a custom brace. The shock itself is an Öhlins unit from a Yamaha R1, but Mirko had the spring chrome plated.

The 18” front wheel is a one-off, featuring a custom-machined aluminum hub and rim, and laced with stainless steel spokes. It’s hooked up to the GSX-R’s brake calipers and Brembo rotors.

Out back, Mirko fitted the 18” wheel and disc brake from a KTM Adventure 1290R, along with its braking system, a Brembo rotor and a custom-designed rear brake mount. Both the front and rear sprockets are—you guessed it—custom.

All the CB750’s original bodywork’s now in the bin. There are fluid new shapes from front to back, with a new headlight bucket, tank and tail. Again, all were crafted from wooden bucks, which a metal-shaper then used to hand-form new parts from aluminum.

The seat hump is actually the oil tank, and if you look closely you’ll spot matching caps for it and the gas tank. The seat pan was cast using a mold based off a 3D printed model, then covered in faux leather. Embossed in the leather is the only MessnerMoto logo throughout the entire build.

The frame was trimmed at the back to match the new seat, then repainted in a semi-gloss black. Everything was else was left with a raw brushed finish, except for the 3D printed parts—which are clear-coated to protect them from UV rays.

There are fenders at both ends, 3D printed from reinforced ABS plastic. The front fender’s brace was 3D printed too, along with the headlight mounts, but both are supported by carbon and stainless steel bits.

There are yet more custom-designed parts rounding out the Honda, including the clip-ons, controls, switches, and throttle body. The rear-set foot controls are actually from Tarozzi, but they’re mounted on bespoke brackets.

It’s clear that a staggering amount of thought, hard work and love went into this CB-based café, making it one of the best examples of the genre that we’ve come across. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait another three years for the next MessnerMoto project.
