Lato

Canon EOS 6D, Zenit Helios 44M-4 58mm f/2
[EN] Slowly but surely, I’m starting to feel better. The meds are doing their job. Summer? Well… it is what it is. Vacation vibes — underwhelming. But photographically? It can still be beautiful. Even if it throws some challenges my way. Still, I go out. Expanding the portfolio, catching all sorts of frames. I don’t care that it could pour any minute. When it starts — I just run.
My raincoat hasn’t arrived. Neither has the rest of the camping gear. But hey — no stress. Just sit and relax. Because really… what else can you do?
[PL] Powoli, powoli zaczynam dochodzić do siebie. Leki robią swoje. Lato? Jakie jest, każdy widzi. Wakacyjnie — słabe. Ale fotograficznie potrafi być piękne. Choć rzuca wyzwania. Mimo to wychodzę.
Spokojnie. Just sit and relax. Bo co możesz zrobić?

Don't think I've seen it listed anywhere, but what do you typically shoot with?
My main camera is a Sony α6000 for which I currently have these lenses:
. Sony FE 50mm f/1.8
. Sigma Contemporary 30mm f/1.4 DC DN
. Helios 44M-6 58mm f/2
. Fujian 35mm f/1.7 CCTV
. And two other 35mm f/2.8 and 28mm f/2.8 generic m42 lenses that I can 't remember the brand
For a while I had a Canon Powershot G10, it's dead now, but a bunch of my pictures where taken with it (I still miss that camera)
Last but no least, my phone, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 7. For the more "serious" photos I take with it, I use the Lightroom app to be able to shoot raw, than I just edit the DNG files on my computer like any of the other photos.

Tenía muchos años de no salir con alguien (no, no en ese contexto) y dedicarle un día de fotos.
Este fue parte del resultado.

Not to make it about gear too much, but I recently picked up a Zenit 12XP with a Helios 58mm f/2, and damn I did not expect the swirliness of that bokeh. A really fortunate combination of scene and tool I think.

Trip to Pen y Fan, Wales
after a long break from shooting i took a roll of Portra 800 with Zenit E body, whole film was exposed at maximum sensitivity of Zenit´s light meter wich is around 600 ISO
i was expecting most of the photos to be over exposed but they came up pretty nice, also the cheap scan take a role in this becouse the grain looks teribble
photos are taken on Helios 44m-4 58mm f/2, also i Ennalyt 35mm f/2.8

Planning- subject and locations
Julia Jeffrey is a Scottish painter and illustrator trained at The Glasgow School of Art. Julia is known for her art made under the moniker Stonemaiden.
I am really drawn to Julia’s magickal subject matter and elemental style so she was the first person who sprang to mind as a potential sitter for this project. I would like to try to make a series that echoes Julia’s aesthetic in the photographs.

Some of Julia’s paintings, from her website. Julia’s work explores the animist ways.
Indoor locations of significance
Julia’s studio is a loft conversion in an old cabinet maker’s building. I went for a visit to look at the space and the available lighting to help me prepare for the shoot. The space has multiple skylights providing natural light. This is supplemented with fluorescent tubes and Julia’s high quality artists’ light which simulates daylight, allowing her to paint into the evenings.
Paisley museum and library and Coats memorial church in Paisley were other indoor locations that Julia highlighted as important places for her personally.
Outdoor locations of significance
Pollok Park, specifically the Pollok Beech, is a significant outdoor location for Julia. I know the area fairly well and think it could be an interesting option for an outdoor portrait.

Another significant location for us both is Kilmartin Glen but won’t be able to travel there under current Covid19 restrictions. We discussed visiting Sighthill standing stones instead as they are within Glasgow and were erected under the principles of astroarchaeology discovered in ancient sites such as Kilmartin Glen.
Objects of significance
Julia’s pencils and paint brushes are significant objects as tools in Julia’s chosen media and also are clear symbols of her work. Julia also mentioned two other objects of significance and inspiration: a roe deer skull and a crystal gifted to her by a dear friend. I would like to incorporate these objects in the photographs we make for this project.
Plan
We have organised two meetings for this project. The first will be at Julia’s studio where I plan to make some photographs of Julia working. I plan to capture some details of her work and her environment to give a feel for Julia’s practice. The space is relatively small so I will be using a wide zoom lens (20-35mm f/2.8) plus a 50mm and 85 prime lens for use in low light levels. The second, Pollok Park, will be weather dependent so we have agreed to be meet on a day with a favorable forecast. The plan for this part of the project is to show Julia in nature where she finds so much inspiration.
The seasons feature strongly in Julia’s work so I am happy to be able to catch the strong character of autumn in this shoot. I plan to use natural afternoon/ evening golden light to further accentuate the feeling of autumn. I also will take a reflector as the light will be quite directional so a reflector will be useful to fill shadows and allow me to shoot against the light. I plan to use my Helios 44M 58mm f/2 lens. This vintage Soviet lens is a M42 mount lens but works fine on my Canon via an adapter. I really enjoy using the lens for photographing plants mainly. Its nine-blade aperture produces a swirly bokeh that brings a painterly impression to the image, reflecting Julia’s work. The following photograph was made with this lens during a location scout.

I plan to use the locations, objects and lens choice to try to give a feeling for Julia’s inspiration and practice. Other equipment I will bring includes: 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, 24-70mm f/4.0, tripod, 5-in-1 reflector.
Queen of Stones, (C) Julia Jeffrey.

Risk Assessment
1. Covid-19: risk of transmission through respiratory aerosols or through touching objects. Risk mitigation for this will involve following government guidelines, i.e. wearing a face covering, cleaning hands frequently, not touching my face, maintaining 2m distance from Julia. No other people will be present while I am visiting Julia’s studio.
2. Studio stairs: The studio is up a steep flight of stairs so there could be some risk of slipping/ falling. Risk mitigation involves taking care with my equipment not to slip.
