Tree Removal 101: What to Expect Before, During, and After
Removing a tree is a big task that needs careful thought and steps. When a tree is sick, hurt, or just in the way of new work, taking it down is not as easy as it may seem. For those at home, knowing the steps can help calm fears and make the process smooth. This guide shows you what to expect before, during, and after tree removal in Werribee, sharing key tips and the best ways to go about it.
Tumblr media
Before Tree Removal
1. Assessment and Planning
The first step in tree removal is a full check by a skilled arborist. A trained team of high-line tree care will check the tree’s health, site, and any risks. This check is key as it finds the best way to remove or prune trees and keeps things safe.
Key Points:
Tree Health: A sick or dead tree is more at risk of sudden falls, so removal is more urgent.
Close to Homes: Trees near homes, wires, or other sites need special removal ways.
Impact on Nature: Think about how taking out a tree might change the nearby area, like other plants and wildlife.
2. Obtaining Necessary Permits
In most places, tree pruning in Geelong needs a permit, more so for protected trees or large ones. Highline Tree Care helps with local rules, making sure all is set before the work starts. Not getting the right permits can cause fines or slow things down.
3. Preparing the Site
Before tree removal in Werribee, clear the space around the tree. This means moving cars, furniture, and other items. It’s also smart to let neighbours know about the work, mainly if the tree is close to their property.
Best Practices:
Clear the Space: Make sure the area has no items that could be harmed or block the work.
Inform Neighbours: A kind note can stop issues and keep things calm.
During Tree Removal
1. Safety First
Safety is the key focus when trees are cut. The team at Highline Tree Care uses tools and ways to bring down even big trees with care. The job often means tree removal in Werribee in parts, starting from the top and working down.
Steps Involved:
Tree in Parts: The tree is cut into parts that are easy to move. This helps keep nearby things safe.
Safe Drops: Each part is slowly brought down or guided to the ground to avoid harm.
Handling Debris: Small bits like branches are often chipped on-site. This cuts waste and makes cleanup quick.
2. Communication and Coordination
Clear talk among the crew is key for a smooth task. Homeowners can count on the Highline Tree Care crew to work as one, making sure tree removal in Werribee is done well.
Best Tips:
Stay Safe: For your safety, stay inside or keep clear during work.
Follow Steps: If told to move cars or clear the area, doing as the crew says keeps things on track.
After Tree Removal
1. Stump Removal
Once the tree is down, you must choose what to do with the stump. Some will leave it as part of the yard, but many prefer to grind it away. Highline Tree Care has stump grinding services that clear the stump, leaving your yard neat and set for fresh landscaping.
Perks of Stump Grinding:
Stops Regrowth: Grinding the stump deep down ensures the tree won’t grow back.
Boosts Looks: Removing the stump gives a more crisp look to your yard.
Lessens Risks: Stumps can trip people, more so where kids play or where mowing is done.
2. Site Cleanup
Tree removal in Werribee makes a large pile of waste, like limbs, leaves, and wood chips. Highline Tree Care will do a full cleanup, leaving your yard neat and tidy. The team clears all waste or, if you like, leaves wood chips for your yard or garden.
Best Practices:
Use Wood Chips: Reuse wood chips as mulch for your beds. This keeps the soil moist and stops weeds.
Inspect the Site: Once the team is done, walk the yard to check that all waste is gone and the area is safe.
3. Post-Removal Care
After the tree is gone, the space may need some care to return its look or prepare it for new plants. Based on the size and spot of the tree, you might want to plant grass, shrubs, or even another tree there. Highline Tree Care can give ideas for good replacement trees or plans for the area.
Points to think about:
Soil Health: Tree roots can drain soil nutrients, so think about boosting the soil before you plant new things.
Future Growth: Pick plants or trees that won’t outgrow the space or cause issues later on.
Concluding Words
Tree removal in Werribee is more than just cutting down a tree; it’s a task that needs careful plans, skilled work, and thoughtful care afterwards. By knowing what to expect before, during, and after the job, you can make wise choices and keep your space safe and lovely. Highline Tree Care’s team of skilled arborists is here to help you at each step, giving you expert, safe tree removal services made just for you.

Like Spring When it Snows
The world is so quiet, left to its own mind The sound of fingers rubbing before the snap connects Even that could break the branches of the great willow, me I know what you’re thinking, but I’m not one to weep I like the world when it is loud, when it doesn’t have time Urban drawl melting to rosebuds dripped in glitter like sunlight It’s hard to describe the monotony of the cacophony of it all I love the noise But the cold catches it all and swallows it whole The city doesn’t exist, somehow A cemetery in a snowstorm The fog keeps it all to itself, a selfish lover who swore they weren’t jealous The city and all its lights, its bars and booze, its patrons, lovers Intimacy in the subway station, metro sexuality And it all goes quiet, a silent film in black and grey Ink dancing on the wind, threatening to dry That is the wintertime to the cosmopolitan Grey and depressing to some but I find the aching moans of it comforting The city is so loud and beautiful that the silence is like a warm blanket But what of the rain, when tracks flood over into rivers under rivers Above roads The Highline in low mist and a threatening roil of foreign linguistics It’s loud but not the way it typically is Like someone yelling within the din, barely cutting through In a language you think you recognize but certainly don’t speak Someone tries to shoo them away but the clouds don’t care They migrate anyway Have you ever been through a blizzard in April? Or maybe on Halloween, when Fall dresses itself as something else to scare you We are all made of the noise, of the intimate somethings, someones It’s the pockets of quiet that make me love it I am like Spring when it snows Alive Breathing, bursting from something cold and empty to those who don’t look The cold has a smell to it The snow makes sound when it hits the ground It is the quiet that makes me love how loud the city is Witchcraft in boxes hidden under my desk at work Pockets of futurepast Maybe nothing is real, you know? Ah, but you wouldn’t know, would you? You can’t really know anything, you know? Trick question, but a treat to consider The world is so quiet, left to its own mind I’m loud when I do that Maybe that’s the magic of everything The city melts away to silence amidst the noise And in that little pocket of Springtime snow I can hear myself Like a headstone in the mist, it’s foggy but it glows A stone is not a stone, merely, when it rests on someone’s head Can you see history? Does it make you a willow tree? I can’t see myself in the city, I’m too busy seeing everyone else Like Spring when it snows, there is quiet in sound The stillness is quiet most places But the city? It is the sound of snowfall When no one is moving, and the universe is muffled When even stars dim their lights The city seems to breathe It wakes from hibernation, but not from sleep Can you hear it? OR does it sound like silence to you?

more plant research rants and the tragedy of the cucumbers
Diving in the research produced more questions than answers, but it also made me think about the structure of the field guide in ways I hadn’t previously.
There are a lot. 62 not including the grass, most of these are on the highline. There are six types of grass. How do I cull this down, or decide whats important? Even the ones that seem like overgrown weeds have really interesting properties. I color coded the plants that are on the planting schedule, and the ones that aren’t highlighted are mostly just ornamental, but does ‘ornamental’ mean = not relevant to the field guide?
I can identify now most of these plants, and where they are on the highline, but some are missing (the tragic tale of the cucumbers, for example)
It’s interesting to see how many of these are not native. When I was talking to Amani, she mentioned some research students had done a few years ago about how the non-native plants on campus are doing. Would looking into that be a waste of my time?
Also when talking to Amani, we discussed they ‘why’ of the field guide. I explained that I needed to answer the question of WHY I thought it was important for students to be able to identify and connect with the greenery on campus. (I guess we are drummed with the whole ‘nature= good, technology = evil’ so much that we don’t really question it). She suggested scholarly research into the effect of plants/nature on humans, in particular students. Is that a good answer to ‘why’? What about the link between connecting to the environment = caring for it = more eco-conscious students?
LOOK! AT ! THESE! COOL PLANTS! Edible! Medicinal! WAR PLANTS!!! The desert rose is g o r g e o u s but it’s sap is used as arrow poison for hunting game throughout Sub Saharan Africa and as a fish toxin (according to wikipedia, but I have to do more research on where and who exactly did this). Not only is it toxic to humans, ingesting even the flower is fatal to dogs. There are so many dogs on this campus!!
On the note of poisonous plants, we have quite a few that are at least toxic or irritants. What would happen if college students, who as a group are not known for making the most intelligent of decisions, knew this? Should this information be shared as a warning or hidden to protect them?  If my field guide starts calling attention to these plants, I don’t know whether thats a good thing or a bad thing.  I’m of the mind that people should be aware of the dangers around them so they can make more informed decisions on what they do/choose to put in their mouth. Then again, no one has yet died of eating a yellow oleander flower.
Everyone who sees my highlighted planting schedule seems really interested in it, and pleasantly surprised at things such as the pomegranate and mysterious cucumber plants. I’m glad my geeky interest is not exclusive to me alone.
The neem trees in front of D1 lack sunlight and are not thriving, according to Iqbal. Is this relevant?
The cucumbers are nowhere to be found, although I’ve made many, many trips around the highline on the lookout for them.  I asked on the NYUAD student facebook page, but I got nothing but wow reacts and a characteristically snarky comment from Hatim:

Sky Ferreira's Beauty Routine
Interview by Yasi Salek
source
'When I started touring was when I started to take care of my skin. Before then I just kind of took it for granted—I could wash my face with soap and water and I’d be fine. But on tour, I started having to wear makeup more often, and I would always fall asleep with my makeup on. I mean, I still do, but not all the time. I really make an effort not to. Now I wash my face with this sex toy…[Laughs]. No, it’s this thing from like Sweden, I guess, and it's called Foreo. It vibrates. Totally not a sex toy! It probably could be…but personally I haven’t done that yet.
First I use Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Purifying Foaming Cleanser, then I use Amorepacific Treatment Toner. I also take Spironolactone because I get hormonal cystic acne, which is the worst. It fucking hurts! I’ve always been a really anxious person and as a kid I would always have panic attacks. I still do. So whenever I was stressed out I’d start picking. I’ll start picking at things that don’t exist, and then they do exist, so I use SKII Cellumination Aurabright. It helps with marks.
My eyes have always had dark circles under them my whole life, not because I’m not healthy. I’ve never had trouble sleeping but I am anemic, so I think it may have something to do with that. I try to sleep as much as I can on tour. I get really bad jet lag and the first thing that happens is that my eyes swell. Someone gave me these Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Masks on a shoot. They just make me feel better for some reason. I always do them on tour or if I’m playing a show or if I go to an event.
Even though I bleach my hair, it's always been pretty healthy. For the longest time, I went to [colorist] Aura Friedman, who is amazing, but I had to switch stylists and colorists for something and after that, my hair started breaking off. I had to chop it all off….it was traumatizing, really. When I was growing it out, and I was drawing marks on my arms for progress. Hair is just hair, at the end of the day, but I really did feel like myself again [when it grew back out.]
Amazon and I have become really good friends when it comes to finding stuff for my hair. Basically I put tons of shit in it and I don’t really know if it works. I can’t really wash my hair that often because it just dries it out. I wash it twice a week with Giovanni Tea Tree Shampoo, but just on my roots. On the ends I use Wen Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner. I swear on my life it helped my hair grow. Then I have this Bumble and bumble Mending Masque so it doesn't get frizzy. I bought Pureology Serious Colour Care Hydrate Conditioner out of desperation on tour, and I kind of just left it in my hair overnight and it worked really well for the texture. I hate when my hair is big. Then there's It’s A 10 Miracle Deep Conditioner Plus Keratin. It actually is amazing.
Aura told me about Olaplex Perfector No. 3 when we were bleaching my hair back and it didn’t break off at all! Not one bit! I put it in twice a week and leave it in overnight, and if I’m going to do my roots or something, Aura will just leave it in my hair for like a week. Someone gave me Phylia De M. Connect Treatment for Follicles, Scalp, and Hair, and it actually really helps, but it takes time. I also use Provitamin B5 by Making Cosmetics—they use it for burns. I learned about that from one of those weird forums. I’ll mix it in my conditioner…I make straight-up concoctions.
Then my makeup just sort of depends on what I’m wearing or what I want to do, or how lazy I am—that’s really the reality of it. I rediscovered eyeliner, because I finally learned how to do it properly. I use this Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon. It’s super greasy so it’s a lot of commitment for someone who rubs their eyes like me. But that’s why I like it, because it’s so greasy and kind of crazy. For liquid it’s funny, because I was on a shoot for like two weeks, and I was like, what’s this eyeliner? It’s amazing. It stayed all day and it didn’t run and it would dry fast. The makeup artist was like, [whispers] ‘It’s Kat Von D.’ I thought it was going to be some insane-ass expensive shit. And I’ve been using Kat Von D liquid eyeliner ever since!
Lipstick was always the thing for me, though. I’ve always loved MAC Russian Red because it’s not too pink or too orange. It’s the perfect one. I stole it from my mom. I also use Charlotte Tilbury lipstick and mix it with other things.
I try to keep my skin pretty minimal. For coverup I use this Clé de Peau stick thing, the concealer. It doesn’t mess up my skin, that’s why I like it. What else? Armani foundation and I like Chanel mascara. I like contouring because I have a heart-shaped face. I use Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit. I remember I did this interview with Debbie Harry once and I was like, 'Tell me everything—tell me your makeup tricks.' And she just gave it all to me. I knew she went to beauty school. She told me, ‘I’ve always done my makeup my whole life. My whole career.’ Like, every picture—it was like, her. She helped me with the contouring thing. Because we have a similar shaped face, you know, and I was like, how do you do it? She was just like, ‘Just go up!’
I feel like my stage makeup makes me feel a little more confident in some ways. I don’t consider myself two different people, I’m not like that. But, you know Sky Ferreira the singer is a lot more confident and tougher than Sky. And the makeup helps with that mindset.”
—as told to ITG

Hello from your secret santa! I’m going to get a head start on your gift pretty soon. I will be out of town on Christmas and won’t have computer access. So I want to get it ready early so I can just post it on mobile on Christmas :) Anyway what are your favorite Christmas colors and favorite New York landmarks? 🎄
Hello! Oh that’s always fun, where are you traveling to?
My favorite Christmas colors are definitely red, white, and gold which is actually the scheme for our Christmas tree this year.
As for NYC landmarks, Chelsea Market has a special place in my heart because it was super close to my old High School, the Williamsburg Bridge is great because it’s the one no one really cares about, Rockerfeller Center, the Highline, Times Square lowkey, The Macy’s on 34th because of all the window displays, and probably the Seaglass Carousel!

Navigating Tree Removal Regulations in Portland and Colac
In Portland and Colac, trees play a pivotal role in enhancing urban landscapes, providing not only aesthetic beauty but also crucial environmental benefits like air purification and temperature moderation.
Balancing the growth and maintenance of these green spaces with urban development demands careful consideration. It’s essential to navigate tree removal with an understanding of both the environmental impact and the regulatory framework designed to protect these natural resources, ensuring that urban expansion and tree conservation work hand in hand for sustainable development.
Tumblr media
In this blog, we’ll understand how to proceed with tree removal regulations in both these cities.
Tree Removal Regulations
Tree removal in Portland and Colac is designed with regulations to protect urban greenery while allowing for responsible development.
Permits are generally required to remove trees, with criteria focusing on tree health, safety risks, and environmental impact. These regulations aim to ensure that tree removal is considered carefully, balancing the need for urban expansion with the preservation of natural landscapes and biodiversity.
Tree Removal: Permit Process
To apply for a tree removal permit, typically you start by submitting an application to the local council or regulatory body. This application might require details about the tree, such as its species, size, and location, and reasons for its removal.
Documentation such as property maps or photographs of the tree might be needed. There could be a fee for the application associated with the tree removal in Portland, which varies by location.
The assessment process then involves a review of the tree’s health, impact on the environment, and any potential safety concerns. Approval times can vary, and conditions may be attached to the permit.
Protected Trees: Requires Legal Authority Permission
To accurately identify the specific tree species and sizes that are legally protected in Portland and Colac, one would need to consult the local council or government environmental agency’s regulations.
Typically, these regulations protect significant, heritage, or native trees, which could include large specimens, certain species known for their ecological value, or trees of a specific age. Such trees often require special considerations and permissions for removal or pruning to ensure the preservation of the area’s natural heritage and biodiversity.
Penalties for Non-Compliance with Tree Regulations
The legal consequences of unauthorised tree removal in Colac or Portland can include significant fines and the requirement to replant trees. These penalties are designed to deter individuals from bypassing local regulations, which aim to preserve the natural and urban canopy.
Understanding and adhering to these regulations is crucial to avoid such penalties, highlighting the importance of consulting local guidelines or seeking advice from professionals before undertaking any tree removal activities.
Consulting with Certified Arborists
Consulting with certified arborists is essential for ensuring tree work is conducted safely, legally, and effectively. Arborists possess specialised knowledge in tree health, allowing them to diagnose and treat various conditions accurately. They play a crucial role in navigating the permit process, understanding local regulations, and ensuring all work complies with legal requirements.
Additionally, arborists specialising in tree removal in Colac or Portland can offer advice on the best practices for tree care, from pruning to disease prevention safeguarding the health of the trees and the surrounding environment. Their expertise not only ensures the longevity and vitality of trees but also protects property owners from potential legal issues associated with unauthorised tree work.
By leveraging their skills and knowledge, arborists contribute significantly to the preservation of urban and natural landscapes, promoting a harmonious balance between development and environmental conservation.
Environmental Considerations
Trees play a pivotal role in local ecosystems by improving air quality, supporting wildlife, and regulating climate. Their removal can lead to diminished biodiversity and disrupted ecosystems.
Regulations aim to minimise environmental damage by ensuring that tree removal in Colac and Portland is carefully considered and compensated for, often through replanting initiatives to maintain ecological balance and support biodiversity. These measures help preserve the essential functions that trees provide to the environment.
Final Words
Adhering to tree removal regulations is crucial for the well-being of both the community and the environment. Responsible actions by property owners, guided by these regulations in tree removal in Portland or Colac, ensure the protection of our valuable tree canopy, contribute to the sustainability of local ecosystems, and maintain the aesthetic and ecological balance of urban and rural areas.
Compliance with these guidelines fosters a shared responsibility towards environmental stewardship and community safety, underscoring the collective role in preserving natural resources for future generations. Contact Highline Tree Care for best practices and compliant tree removal services.

It might will have several lawsuits. With 95 cars, hard to say who started the accident and whatever if it's one person cause 95 altogther or all 95 is fault on it own. Some may not even have insurance. There would be 95 different drivers so it will be 95 different verison or story of what happening.""

Advice on teen car insurance ?
I'm 18, from Ontario and have had my G2 for over a year now. I was in a deathly car accident in january on the highway because of really bad weather conditions, I'm lucky to be okay. The cop didn't charge me because the weather was so bad and there were a number of car accidents that week. However the insurance company faulted me because I spun out first. Its been 2 months and my dad has done nothing but complain about his car being wrecked. He blames me 100% for the accident even though I hit black ice and there was nothing I could do, and he wasn't even there... For my 18th birthday my grandad (his dad) is giving me $10,000 for a car. My dad is making him wait to give it to me and he won't take me car shopping ! And when I do get one he's not putting me under his insurance ! I have to insure my own car at 18 with only a part time job. Is this unfair? Not being able to drive has been a huge hassel. What are the cheapest cars to insure ? How much would insurance on a mustang cost (ROUGH GUESS)?
Okay, so my mom's car (Chevrolet Cobalt) is finally paid off. I get my license in less than 3 months. We're wanting to get a 2011 Mustang. The concern is though, the insurance cost. Her and I would have to be on the insurance. Her insurance now is like 185 every 2 months, because she got a speeding ticket a while ago so it went up..? But this isn't going to be a really expensive car. The MSRP is around 22k and the only option I would get is automatic, instead of shift. Which is like an extra 1000. But of course it's a 2 door sports car.. So any estimations? Like extremely rough estimations. Like the average insurance, not real high or real low protection. She'd be the primary driver. ONE more question. 2011 Mustang or 2011 camaro? I like the camaro better, but she thinks it's ugly. But it's less than 1k more than the mustang, and I would love it.. I'm male by the way and make all A's in school if that has any effect at all, which i doubt. Thanks very much!""

As some may have noticed, Jake and I went on a road trip the first week of June to Glacier National Park. We drove through South Dakota and made two stops on the way: one at Mount Rushmore, one in Sioux Falls. Read more about our trip with pictures, videos, and how it fueled our traveling hunger.
Camping has definitely always been a bitter sweet experience for me. You can save some money, but you have to be okay with giving up a couple luxuries. You can get closer to nature and experience wherever you are in a new way, but you’re going to have that need for a clean bed and safe home by the end of the trip.
While Jake and I both felt that want of our “home”, we were both pretty sad to be leaving Glacier Park. We both laid in our tent the final night of at Glacier, watching the pre-made slideshows that Apple made us on our phones of our trip – equipped with our choice of “Sentimental”, “Extreme”, or “Adventurous” music. Some of the sounds really made us sad because we’d be leaving this gorgeous place.
We definitely “went big” with our first road trip. I really don’t think any national park in the US can truly beat the views we saw and the awe. These pictures really don’t do this place justice. The bluest lake water I’ve ever seen, the highest elevation I’ve ever climbed, and the unique sight of a glacier just miles from reach.
Tumblr media
Day 1: Mount Rushmore
I’ve been to Mount Rushmore before, but Jake never had. The first time I saw it was in the dark, so it was cool to be able to see it in the daylight and walk the small trail that goes underneath all the carved heads. One thing I always say when I’m there – it’s a lot smaller than you think it is.
Day 2-4: Glacier National Park
Three days and three nights we stayed in Glacier National Park.  In total, the park has over 5 campgrounds you can stay at, and the Going-to-the-Sun road runs straight through the park and is 55 miles long. Unfortunately, we were so early in the season that only 14 miles of the road were open, and a lot of trails were still unavailable because the elevation still had too much snow.
Day 2 – St. Mary’s Falls
The first day we actually got to take a small hike to see St. Mary’s Falls, which is where we camped (St. Mary’s Campground). The falls were so beautiful, and the sun was glistening off the water perfectly for these pictures. It was so loud too! You had to shout in order to hear one another at close range.
Fun fact: This first night it stormed all night, but we did not get wet at all in our tent! Go us! We also saw two bears on the side of the road driving, and 3 deer.
Day 3 – Grinnell Glacier
This was an amazing hike – what we were able to do. We originally planned on hiking Highline Trail which is about 15 miles and takes you up and above the glacier. Unfortunately, it was closed because it was early in the season. We changed plans to hike to Lower Grinnell Lake, turn back and hike as far as we could up to Grinnell Glacier (it was also blocked after a certain point due to elevation and snow).
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the only way to get to the lake on the path had a bridge and the bridge was down. We were pretty disappointed that we weren’t told this and that they didn’t post anything like they had on other trails for bridges down. Nonetheless, we got to go as far as we could to see the Grinnell Glacier. You see it, and you tell yourself that can’t be it. But, it’s definitely a glacier.
Tumblr media
Fun fact: We saw a moose who was not entertained by our presence, and we contemplated scaling a fallen tree in the creek to get to Grinnell Lake.
Day 4 – Gunsight Trail to Florence Falls
This day kicked our asses. We had hiked a LOT for Grinnell the day before, so we were a little sore. The entire path to the falls was downhill. I knew it would be rough on the way back, but it would be even harder after how the hike went.
I was definitely more nervous about bears here because it was almost entirely through the woods except for a small little creek/fall and an overlook of a lake. BUT, we were kind of frustrated because we didn’t make it. There were huge trees down on the path and we tried our best to climb over them to make it to the falls, but it was draining our energy and our time. So, we wound up turning back and heading to the little falls the we saw.
The way up tested my patience and my endurance. By the end, I was pretty sad we had another trail thwarted, but I was still happy that I completed this tough climb and we still got to see what I wanted to.
Fun fact: There were many conversations of me spreading wings and flying away, and the reaction Jake would have.
Day 5-6: Sioux Falls
On Day 5 we spent about 15 hours driving, and we had gotten up pretty early so we could get to Sioux Falls and enjoy the hotel a little more. Yes, we stayed in a hotel this time. Sioux Falls was definitely a reality change both days. We went out for drinks, got in a pool, I probably need a tetanus shot from a rusty earring I stepped on in the pool, and we saw the not-so-exciting Sioux Falls.
Tumblr media
It’s definitely an interesting little town and they have some places with pretty awesome food! But, it was a huge come-down from our adventurous first 4 days.
Fun fact: The water was yellow, and it kept smelling like sewage, a farm, and a zoo. Again, nothing too exciting.
And, We’re Home!
Lessons were learned on this trip. If you plan to go to Glacier, go a little later in the season. It may be more crowded, but the trails you need to hike will all be open and available for you to see. I highly suggest Glacier! If you go, take us again with you.
Another lesson? We suck as humans. The park was founded in the early 1900s, and it had about 150 glaciers. There are now less than 20. Based on an updated article of the NPS, they predict that climate change will lead to a Glacier National Park without any active glaciers by 2030. From old pictures from the 80s, you can even tell how much Grinnell Glacier has shrunk in size just in 30 years. We need to take better care of our world before all that’s left are us and some buildings.
We definitely want to go back to Glacier Park. There’s SOOOO much we didn’t get to see. We saw maybe 1/10 of the park – probably not even. Until our next trip – I’ll be wanderlust.
Travel brings love and power back into your life. – Rumi
Find out about our trip to Glacier National Park and some of the adventures we faced! As some may have noticed, Jake and I went on a road trip the first week of June to Glacier National Park.

Creative Inspiration: Content We Enjoyed this Winter
Long format we love you!
In the age of everyone having a blog, highly stylised long format can be what it takes to make your written content stand out. At Distilled we often ask ourselves does something being a blog post make it immediately feel less valuable than say, a white paper or a comprehensive guide? Is turning something into a simple blog post selling yourself short, is that format right for your content? With written content coming in so many forms from microblogging in tweets, to company e-newsletters, it’s important to find the right format for what you want to say, of course, sometimes that is with a simple blog post.
Each quarter at Distilled we look back over the content that has made us tick. Content that made us laugh, start heated debates, WOW at how pretty it is, or feel flabbergasted by the conclusions. Building on the 2017 summer and autumn roundup we launched last year, here’s what we loved (or loathed) with equal passion this winter. Starting with some beautiful long format journalism.
Poor Millennials - Highline Huffington Post
With so much content being churned out these days, one might argue that journalistic standards are slipping. Perhaps to fly the flag of quality, well-researched journalism once more, a select team at The Huffington Post has created a new arm called ‘Highline’. Each article features captivating movement as you scroll. Poor Millennials, which was 8 months in the making, discusses ‘Why millennials are facing the scariest financial future of any generation since the Great Depression’. I found it relatable, even though I’m at the older end of the millennial spectrum.
The frank writing style and 8-bit illustrations pull you in. Pull quotes, stats and bold use of typography make this monster of a post easily digestible at a surface level if you don’t have half a half day to read the whole thing. The tone of voice is brash and allows you to feel justified in your bitterness towards the economy. The animations aptly depict millennials emotions in a very literal way, e.g. falling through space with no one to cushion your fall. There are graphs - in psychedelic pinks, and what feels like levels and character controllability, all harping back to the 90’s rave culture and gaming that millennials hold so dear.
Ungifted - Do The Green Thing
On the lead up to Christmas, we often run about like headless chickens buying up unnecessary bits and bobs for our loved ones, just because we need to get them something. ‘Do The Green Thing’ is a public service that uses creativity to tackle climate change. Needless to say, they would like to minimise the plastic tat lying in our landfills after the festive period. How? By inspiring us to give time not objects. And so ‘Do The Green Thing’ created ‘Ungifted’. It’s essentially a list of ways you can spend time with your friends/family, whether it be a winter bike ride, a night on the tiles, or a home-cooked meal. The long format page has little gifs depicting characters joyously appreciating these activities, and a long list of numerous ideas to incentivise our consumer society to change their habits. ‘Do The Green Thing’ could have easily added in stats about unwanted material gifts, or rubbish accumulated over Christmas to further bolster the message. The page presentation is fun, lighthearted, non-preachy, and not too content heavy. This makes content consumption, and subsequent change, more likely.
Find Your Happy Place - Budget Direct
Budget Direct - a car/travel/house insurance company - has collated data on the factors that affect living standards. The tool enables you to drag and drop a modular ordered list to define your own hierarchy for these standards. Is it house affordability or pollution which are most important to you? Once ordered the tool suggests in which city you might find your happy place. A more simplistic version of OECD’s Better Life Index. Suggesting a life in a far-off city, tells us something about ourselves and allows us to daydream about where we might be most happy. Perhaps we will even use Budget Direct to book our travel insurance when we visit there!
The Gourmand’s 10th issue - The Gourmand - Matthieu Lavanchy
The food and culture journal made waves with its 10th front cover. Working with photographer Matthieu Lavanchy they took food that had already been turned into an emoji, and turned it back into food… meta. The accuracy of the photography vs the emojis is uncanny. Taking icons we see regularly, and reimagining them makes you want to compare the photos to the icons on your phone, it gets you involved.
Thank you, Lamont - Lyft
Lyft is like Uber, a cab app. Lyft has created a series of videos where the premise is giving back to their drivers. They share individual, inspirational and memorable driver stories. With big faceless organisations, and especially those in low paid service industries, stories that show a human element - and even what a positive change working for this company has had on someone's life - stick in your mind. Lamont, the driver featured here, talks about the world being his home as opposed to favouring one place (a great all-inclusive brand message). Lyft surprise him by encouraging his exploration of the world with an all-inclusive around the world trip.
Bullying Jr - Burger King in association with No Bully
Partnering with a charity can really help a brand if there’s synergy with their core messages. It shows the brand cares and is willing to use their clout to speak out to help raise awareness (or money) for those less fortunate. Burger King ‘bullied’ one of their own burgers, to help raise awareness of the impact of bullying. The narrative starts with a fact; ‘30% of students are bullied’. It then shows a bunch of school kids bullying another child. Customers in the Burger King restaurant look on, clearly moved by the scene that is unfolding before them. Yet the majority of spectators do nothing.
Then it’s the burger’s turn. Before it is wrapped up it receives a few sharp punches, flattening and breaking apart the bun whilst the filling spills out. 95% of customers complained about their burger having been bullied, yet only 12% stood up for the bullied child. This campaign isn’t aimed at the bullies themselves. Rather it exposes the impact of the uninvolved bystander, the witness. It asks them to stand up. To say something. This works for a fast food restaurant whose customers are a real mix of ages, including kids getting a quick bite to eat after school. It is the sort of place in towns where children congregate, everyone needs to eat and everyone has the potential to be bullied/see bullying. An eating place should be safe space, where communities can come together to rest and recoup.
Taste Face - Marmite
Marmite has released a face recognition tool and a gene test where the brand states that it knows if you are a lover or hater of Marmite. Marmite has always been brasher than any other brand in actively saying that its customers HATE its product, but now it reveals that science can work out your taste preferences. I actually quite like Marmite but I tried to trick the face recognition tool into believing I am a hater, by pulling my most disgusted face… and it worked, branding me ‘73% a born hater’. For me, the fascination here is more how the face recognition tool works out how much you love or hate something as opposed to it being an accurate test. Is it shareable? Yes! It’s a smart way of having a bit of fun and, of course, people like to share pictures of their own face!
X-Rated Elf - Poundland
Every now and again a brand does something controversial that gets everyone talking. Remember the recent outcry when Dove showed a black person turning into a white person? Personally, I don’t think this marketing effort aimed to be controversial, but conversation was drummed up nonetheless.
Well, some brands create controversy purposefully, shamelessly. How? By talking about teabagging… Ummmm. Yup, that's right. That’s what Poundland made a figurine elf do for it’s Christmas campaign, which was released through a series of images on social. Other scenes showed a naked poker match (Joker Joker, I really want to poke her) and a penis shaped cactus drawn on an etch a sketch (That's one prickly Christmas tree).
While some people found this hilarious, it had many others up in arms, calling it rude, offensive and misogynistic.  Poundland showed no remorse and was quoted saying ‘We're proud of a campaign that's only cost £25.53 and is being touted as the winning marketing campaign this Christmas!’ Poundland also threw caution to the wind by creating some unofficial brand partnerships with Barbie and Ken, and Twinings (who I believe asked them to remove their packaging from one of the scenes).
Holiday Video E-Card -  R&O Construction - Becca Clason
Sometimes a client’s service or product can seem so boring it’s hard to imagine how you can let your creativity run wild. Introducing Construction company R&O and its holiday E-Card by typographic genius Becca Clason. Complete with construction sound effects and Christmas music - the asphalt, sawdust and cement greeting card video really gives you that Christmassy feeling while keeping R&O and the creativity they are showing in mind. The sawdust makes up the words ‘Wishing You’ while the word ‘JOY’ is lowered into place with what seems like a crane. Christmas is a great time and excuse to send out little reminders of your company.
Memory Powered Tree - Marie Curie
This Christmas, Marie Curie created a memory-powered Christmas tree next to the London Eye in Waterloo. Each time a memory was shared on social using the hashtag #LightUpChristmas, lights on the tree would shine a little brighter. This gave people a place to congregate to share memories of lost loved ones, and to celebrate the memories of those still with us too. Having a stunt in such a public space with a high footfall makes it a real talking point, and the activity makes you feel you’re part of a community - coming together to make a little magic happen.
Memories or money - lastminute.com
It’s important to drill down to the specifics of what you are selling with your product or service. Are you selling insurance, or peace of mind? Are you selling games or laughter? What lastminute.com sells is not holidays, it’s memories. It’s the romantic time you had in Venice, or how you were flabbergasted by the scenery in Alberta. It’s that wonderful memory that you will always have with you that matters. That is what you’re spending your money on.
In the video, a handful of people discuss their most poignant or exciting memories. A woman in a lab coat then asks if it’s ok to delete those memories for a fee. The participants (quite rightly) are horrified by the notion and say ‘no’, showing that the memories made are priceless. The video acts as an incentive to book a holiday and make more of those priceless memories.

DANM #7 High Line & Chelsea Galleries
The High Line
A few weeks ago, the DANM class decided to walk the highline on our way to the Chelsea galleries. After seeing the galleries, I decided to walk back on the highline to take a second look at the sculptures and see if there was anything that I had missed.
On my way back, I found a sculpture by Jumana Mann by the name of MUTATIONS Amulet II. The sculpture itself caught me by surprise. It seemed almost hidden behind the nature and trees of the highline. It didn’t call much attention to itself. On closer inspection, it seemed almost in harmony with its surroundings.
Tumblr media
It’s hard for me to really tell what is going on with this sculpture. There is a set of five white tubes. Each tube has its own individual characteristics ranging in size and in shape. Some of the tubes have holes in them, or are open up at the tip. Each of the tube are smooth and seem to have some finish applied to them as to reflect light, though they usually stay in the shadows due to the plants and trees surrounding them.
At this point, I believe this statue is meant to represent a hand, even if slightly deformed. It as if it is connecting with nature. It’s an interaction that seems to be disappearing in this concrete jungle of a city. At the very least, I believe it emphasizes the importance of nature, and our obligation to make it a present part of our society. This deformed hand is almost a plea to take better care of this earth we continually pollute. It’s a sorrow message in one of the most beautiful parts of Manhattan.
 The Chelsea Galleries
After our walk on the High Line, we visited the Chelsea galleries. To be completely honest I felt rather uncomfortable during the visits. I don’t know whether this feeling was merited but it was there nonetheless. I think it was hard for those working at the galleries to take us seriously, and I can understand that. A group of 20 somethings walk into the gallery, with clearly no intention of buying anything, can feel somewhat overwhelming and disappointing. To me, it was clear they were making those feelings known. Of course, if we had been prospective buyers I am sure things would have been different. But the thing is, while I couldn’t afford anything, I was interested in what they had to show. The art world is something that fascinates me, and in the future, I would like to collect art (if I can afford it). This was the first time I was interacting with that world (outside of museums) and my initial thoughts were not really positive.
In the first gallery we saw, there were several works by the artist Logan Hicks that I thought were quite beautiful. Though some varied in size, they all were a depiction of the city. The works were layered stencils, that were hand sprayed on paper. The works focused its color palette on a beautiful dark blue hue that I often see contouring building as the sun rises in the mornings. Thinking I would remember the name of the artist, I left without taking a picture. Of course, less than 5 minutes later, the name escaped me. I decided to return to the gallery to take a photo. Upon my return however, the door to the room in which one of the paintings was located was closed. Politely, I asked one of the women working why that was. I remember her giving me a look as if I was of no use to her but also that I didn’t belong. Yes of course, I wasn’t going to buy anything, but I don’t think that was a reason to shut me out of this community. I thanked her for telling me that the doors were closed because I client was considering buying a work. I went upstairs knowing there was one of Hick’s work there as well. Next to it was another lady also working at the gallery. This time the interaction was much more pleasant. We actually talked about the work for a few minutes. She explained to me aspects of the artist’s process. I was fascinated by what she had to say. I even learned that all the people represented in the work are people Hick’s knows including family members. I thanked her for taking the time and moved on to the next gallery.
Tumblr media
There were works of photography that I also thought were quite sublime. One that comes to mind is Mario De La Isla’s collection of Minimalist Landscape.  Obviously, there were multiple photographs, but my favorite has to be this barely visible landscape in which birds seem to be flying and sitting just over. The relationship between the birds and the space gives us information regarding what is being showed. I believe what we are seeing is a transition between water and sky. But the color shift is so subtle that it almost seems like there is no switch. Moreover, the color palette is this fine gradient of beige, often not associated with the sky or water.
Tumblr media
I came to the conclusion to the conclusion that this was water mostly because there seems to be a reflection below the birds. It is possible it could be their shadows, but what could emulate the color of the sky so perfectly if not water.
The minimalism and simplicity of this work elevates its beauty. I cannot get over the subtlety of the shift. But maybe this is just my interpretation of the photo. I could be wrong. I think this mystery also adds to the value of the work.
There was a collection of photos similar to this one, all focusing on landscape and the beauty of the color they cast.
Finally, one of the last works I saw on this visit to the Chelsea Galleries was a work of acrylic on Aluminum by Bennett Vadnal by the name of Stone House. Interestingly enough this was one of the few works I had seen that day with the price listed for the public to see. Obviously, I knew how much this work was now worth, but it also gave me a ballpark of what to expect in terms of pricing at other galleries. The work itself presented of a small American rural town. We could see the street, powerlines, and a house. It is very simple, but there is something I find extremely charming about it. It appears very characteristic of America. It is also very serene and peaceful, while also displaying solitude and loneliness. The lighting shines mostly on the house but also the end of the road, giving off a more optimistic feel.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, I really enjoyed discovering new works of art at the Chelsea Galleries.

Interim Presentation - Speech Notes
SLIDE 1
My departure point from last semester was looking into how urban dwellers experience heightened forms of stress in the cityscape and how the city can work with a human centred design approach to help alleviate some of these stressors, or at least provide pocket spaces (restorative spaces) where people can feel a bit of reprieve.
My mantra working was: We live in a city that is built for cars and commodification not the simple pleasures of walking and bodily immersion of self into the environment. When we consider the mounting stress placed on us as urban dwellers, the fact that the very forms of the city fail to care and nurture us should incite us to question if the city is not there for us? Who is it for? We need to realise our own worth as people in the urban context and elevate our physical and mental wellbeing above the needs of cars and lifeless corporate spaces.
One very important insight that came up during my research was the idea that “maybe what is truly indicative of restoration is not a fake replica of an environment that already achieves this but an environment that already exists and is informed by the cities ebbs and flows”.
This was challenging the greening of the city mantra, where by placing a tree or some plants on the sidewalk urban planners declare the city a restorative place. Whilst nature is intrinsically linked to relaxation and restorative qualities I wanted in this semester to delve deeper into what site, or characteristic a city already provides that can be utilised to create a restorative space. An urban escape if you will.
SLIDE 2
Coming back to the idea of nature being intrinsically linked to restoration I considered what spaces people think of when they view escape. Escapism as either a distraction, physical separation from the environment you find yourself in or a frame of mind. What I was intrigued by was the link of escapism to travel, particularly to the ‘holiday house’. The cottage by the seaside, bach in the forest, cabin in the mountains or house by the lake. Stereotypically the city environment does not have these same connotations. To challenge this perception that an escape or reprieve can only be achieved by moving away from the city into an uninhabited, untouched natural space I want to create a form of urban escapism that rather than being linked to this idea of a purist natural site is instead informed by urban characteristics. What is the equivalent of a bach in the middle of the city?
SLIDE 2
I developed this diagrammatic way of viewing escapism through degrees of separation, to better understand what city sites could be best utilised to create a restorative environment. For example in figure one the degree of separation is blurred because there is not enough contrast between the different layers in the site or space. Spatially I would view this as a site where one activity or function dominates the space, so if you want to experience a degree of escapism the element of contrast is not high enough. For example you are at uni in this very room, you want to take a break but no matter where you move to, you put headphones in the level of escapism is minimal because there is not enough opposing elements in the space. If we go to figure 3 where there is the highest contrast this could be imagined as the car congested city bordering a pedestrian friendly space such as the waterfront. The contrast between these two spaces is high so when you want to achieve an element of escape going from one to the other will achieve this. I feel like this is valuable when viewing city spaces, because they are filled with contrasts.
SLIDE 3
Through some investigations I found that one of the contrasts or separations that exists in city spaces are heights. We build upwards in cities because it is space efficient and we have to house a lot more people into one square meter than our rural counterparts.
This idea of heights and views in itself is imbued with notions of escapism and restoration. Views from a height distract us, they draw us away from the here and now and we are fascinated by them.
This was also sparked by an interesting conversation I had with several people in this class about what spaces or activities in the city made them feel relaxed. And many pointed to what is essentially city watching that is done from some sort of vantage point.
This precedent , an apple screensaver video also points to this phenomena of being fascinated by watching ebbs and flows through an aerial view. And this is something I feel a city does better than a ‘pristine natural environment’. It has more ebbs and flows to watch, more movement. Whereas pristine nature is generally still.
SLIDE 4
One of my main precedents this semester is the New York highline which you might all be familiar with. It is an elevated space because it has been constructed on an abandoned raised railway network. What I find interesting about this space is that it has used elements of contrast to create a ‘haven’. It uses novel nature (weeds and plants that had begun to grow independent of human influence on the site) and the elevation to create a space that is apart from the rest of the city. And in so being a retreat or haven for its inhabitants.
SLIDE 5
In this concept, a footbridge between high rises I envisioned a network of elevated paths throughout the city that act as a conveyor between high rise office buildings. Like the high rise I felt that a foot bridge denotes its own language of restoration through the act of travelling by foot from one place to another. I feel that movement is a very important part of restoration, the movement of the body through space creates an element of relaxation because through moving you are escaping you are transported from a place of stillness and watching to a place where your environment is changing through the act of walking.
SLIDE 6
This week I spent most of my time looking for a potential site. I felt that retaining the concept of height was important so I looked to spaces where I could utilise height. Google maps was my friend because surprisingly it’s not that easy to climb to the tops of roofs in Wellington city.

5 Reasons You May Fear Tree Removal | Highline tree care
Do you have trees in your yard that need to be removed but you’re delaying it out of hesitation? It’s quite a natural feeling every homeowner that owns a backyard experience at least once. However, as experts, let us assure you that it is not a bad thing to remove a long-standing tree. It may be a favour you’re doing yourself.
In most cases, one might hesitate tree removal in Gisborne for 5 reasons, which we will uncover in this article. Plus, we will also see how each fear can be overcome. Let’s dive in now!
1. Fear of High Costs
Associated costs are quite possibly the main concern people have about tree removal in Gisborne. It may seem that getting rid of a large, mature tree will cost a lot and it may very well be in some cases. Yet, it is an investment for your safety and well-being.
The cost of tree removal is influenced by several factors, including:
Size of Tree: To safely remove larger trees, more labour and equipment are required.
Location: Trees in close proximity to structures or power lines may necessitate additional safety measures.
Tree Wellbeing: Removing diseased or dead trees can be more risky.
Removal of Debris: Debris removal is included in the prices of some businesses, while others charge extra.
 Why It Is Beneficial:
A diseased, damaged, or unstable tree poses a significant threat to your safety and property. Repairing damage caused by a fallen tree can be much more expensive than having it taken down. Moreover, proper tree removal can raise the value and appeal of your property.
2. Fear of Property Damage
Another common apprehension is that the removal of the tree will result in property damage. If the tree is close to your house, fence, or other structures, this concern is understandable. So, it is a must to hire a professional tree removal service in Gisborne that is trained to reduce risks and safeguard your property. They use specialised equipment and techniques to ensure safe and effective tree removal. They direct exhaustive evaluations prior to beginning the work, recognising expected risks and arranging the best methodology. By recruiting experts, you decrease the gamble of property harm essentially.
For example, a typical tree removal service includes the following safety measures:
Ropes and rigging: The tree’s descent can be controlled with these methods, preventing unpredictable falls.
Gear for Protection: In order to safeguard themselves and others, workers don safety gear.
The Plan of Action: To avoid causing damage to nearby structures, arborists meticulously plan the removal process.
3. Fear of Impact on the Environment
A lot of people are worried about the effects that removing a tree will have on the environment. Trees are beneficial to the environment in many ways, including air purification and wildlife habitat. Thus, it can feel like a backwards step in environmental stewardship to cut down a tree.
However, there are times when tree removal is necessary for the greater good. Pathogens from diseased or dead trees can spread to healthy trees, causing even more serious harm to the environment. Plus, trees that are too close to buildings can cause fires, especially in areas that are prone to wildfires.
If you are also concerned about this issue, remember these points:
Planting anew: Think about establishing another tree in a more reasonable area on your property.
Recycling Wood: Wood recycling is a service that many tree removal services in Gisborne provide, converting fallen trees into mulch or lumber.
Providing Aid to Local Ecosystems: Plant native plants and keep a healthy garden as additional environmentally friendly practices.
4. Fear of Losing Aesthetic Appeal
Trees add to a property’s excellence and character, so removing it can be upsetting. While it is normal to feel a connection to a tree, it is important to think about how it will affect your landscape as a whole. Eliminating a tree can open up additional opportunities for your yard:
More light coming in: Your garden can receive more sunlight, allowing other plants to thrive.
New Perspectives: Getting rid of an obstructional tree can open up your space and improve your views.
Brand-New Plants: You can establish new trees, bushes, or blossoms that better suit your ongoing finishing objectives.
Take advice from a professional landscaper and have them assist you in reimagining your outdoor area. They can propose reasonable substitutions and plan a scene that keeps up with or even improves your property’s tasteful allure.
 5. Fear of the Unknown
Finally, the unpredictability of the procedure is a major cause of people’s anxiety about tree removal in Gisborne. Anxiety and reluctance can result from uncertainty.
You can get over it by acquiring an understanding of the procedure for removing trees and resolving any concerns. A typical outline of what to expect is as follows:
Initial Evaluation: The best course of action will be discussed with you after the tree is examined by an arborist.
Preparedness: The group will prepare the location and ensure that safety precautions are in place.
Disposal: The tree is painstakingly chopped down in areas, beginning from the top.
Cleaning: The site is left clean and safe after the debris is removed.
Grinding Stump: Whenever mentioned, the stump can be ground down to a subterranean level.
