Hofesh Schechter is a well-known figure in contemporary dance who made his first foray into ballet with his 2015 work Untouchable for the Royal Ballet (for which he also co-composed the score). Born in Jerusalem, Schechter studied dance, percussion, and drum and danced in the Batsheva Dance Company before moving to the U.K. in 2002. His contemporary dance work has won grants from The Place, the Southbank Show Award, the Critic’s Circle Award for Best Choreography (Modern), and the Groucho Club’s Maverick Award.
His work often deals with themes of warfare, migration, and masculinity, sometimes based on his own experience in the IDF. Notable among these include Political Mother, In Your Rooms, and Untouchable.
Schecter has also done choreographic work for theater, including a 2015 Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof, and for TV, notably for the show Skins. He is currently an Associate Artist at Sadler’s Wells and his company, the Hofesh Schechter Company, is resident company of the Brighton Dome.
