🎶 Soundproof Your Home Studio Like a Pro! 🎶 Fed up with noise disturbances brought about by what is happening outside bothering your recordings? 🛑🚫These home studio soundproofing tips will help you get the perfect sound you are looking for! 🎤✨ ✅ Introduce acoustic panels to your room or office to lower echo and reverb. ✅Block noise by means of a lock on the doors and windows with weather-stripping. ✅Whether a heavy curtain or soundproof blankets, you have short-term measures recommended. ✅Buy a thick rug or a carpet which you place on the floor to absorb the sounds. ✅Incorporate bass traps so that low frequencies are less likely to be problematic. Soak the ambiance in of a quiet and professional environment so as to reach your recordings to a new level! 🎧🔥

Share Your Music With the World
Last summer I lost a friend. He was a musician and singer who had a profound influence on my musicianship and my outlook on life. He possessed a genuine creative musical talent and when on stage, he was a true entertainer.  Although I didn’t see him often, the two of us shared a special connection as musicians from the Jazz and R&B scene. Every single time we got back together, it was as though we had never been apart.
My last visit with him was a few months before he passed away. He called me out of the blue and said, "Billy I need you to play sax on this track." I answered, "You know I kind of quit, right? I can't play like I used to." He said, "No. No. I need you to do it! You're the only one with that sound and this here's my wife's favorite song. I need to get it recorded." This was my good friend talking, so I went along with it and dusted off my saxophone. I practiced with the track a few times and then went over to his home studio to record.
I recorded the tracks for him the way he wanted. But, then... here's the real point of the story.... he started pulling up his other creations.
His health was failing badly, his medical conditions were compounding day by day, but when he sang, he was as alive as ever. Man, he was so alive! He loads up the song on his computer, pulls up the lyrics on his phone and sings right there to me. That song reminds him of another one he wrote so he pulls up the audio tracks, opens his lyrics and sings to me. His voice is like being up close to Luther Vandross or Ray Charles; I am at once overwhelmed and awestruck! This goes on for hours: one song after another, these marvelous creations and this unbelievably powerful voice delivering the message right to me in my own private concert!
Then it hits me. "Brother, you never recorded the lead vocals to any of your songs?”  I ask as my heart sinks. No. He explains that he's waiting for the right time to do it, that's the last step that he hasn't gotten to, or he wants to sell the songs to someone else, or maybe he might find the next Justin Bieber who he can then help produce, manage and get his songs out to the world....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Share your music with the world.
As imperfect as it may be — share your music with the world.
By all means, go through the steps to copyright your music according to U.S. law, but do not let that hold you back. I meet so many people who are worried about their songs being stolen that they hide them away. I know elderly musicians and songwriters who say they have a fortune on the ADAT machines and someday when the right time comes, they'll make big money with the songs. I really want them to. I do. Truthfully, I believe that even with copyright protection the average person wouldn’t stand a chance if a celebrity with unlimited financial means were to steal their song.
Even if you never sell a single download, put your music out there. Finish your songs, record them and share them. There is a new revolution happening in music today and we can all join in.
If only my friend had recorded his songs and put them out on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud or anywhere else, then I could hear his voice once again.
RIP J.J. I'll miss you.

So, I've been doing this a lot these days. I am currently working remotely with two musical projects and learning how to deal with the most technical aspects of music making (not thrilled, but you have to do what you have to do when working remotely. I prefer just to have fun on the stage, you know?) I've been also giving some more attention to the @houseofmirrorsstudio, illustrating and getting better at printmaking. But oil painting will be back soon, I promise. 😉 . . #patriciaariel #homerecordingstudio #musicmaking #focusrite #marbleflowersgarden https://www.instagram.com/p/CIuWcyBh_Hk/?igshid=1b4j6etp2hx7d

IF IT WERE MY MIX #1   "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac
I wanted to introduce a new series I have been working on called, “IF IT WERE MY MIX” where I take a popular, well-known song and explain how I would have mixed it differently.
Tumblr media
The first song I wanted to talk about is, “Dreams” performed by Fleetwood Mac and written by Stevie Nicks. The reason I chose this song is because I was listening to The Greatest hits version that originally came out in 1988. When it ended, the same song played again. But this time it sounded very different. So, I looked at my phone and it was playing the right song, but this was the 2004 remastered version of the album Rumours. I immediately switched back to the Greatest Hits version to make sure it was in fact different, and confirmed that yes, this was definitely “remastered”… in a not so subtle way. I don’t know why, but someone really wanted to added a modern, heavy low end. But why? Why change a classic sound? Is it just to try and sound modern? Are the music industry suits aiming for a younger audience, and think by doing so, this audience is going to go out and buy this new version to listen on bass heavy headphones and car stereo systems? 2004 was in the hype era of mp3 players and earbuds, so having a lot of low end is not going to come through anyway. And is this age demographic really going to pick up a copy? I have so may questions. I went back and listened to the rest of The Greatest Hits album and it just makes me feel. I feel the real recording in the way it was meant to be. Sure, I tend to turn the volume up to match a level of what we are all accustomed to these days, but I’m not adding or cutting anything from the original sound. I love that we are all able to quickly look up these classic records and listen basically anytime and anywhere we want. I am so happy they have all been converted to streamable files. But I really do not understand why so much of these artists’ music is remixed and remastered so many times. They are literally changing the way these iconic records sound into their own interpretations of what they should sound like. I’m going to assume that these decisions are made by industry executives and not actual music creatives. They know the songs are marketable to music fans and by offering new “remastered” versions, they can sell another product. I’m sure these A&R executive types say things like, “Bring the bass up like what’s on the top 40 chart” or “make the vocal stick out above the rest.” Awful things like that. When does it stop? The song “Dreams” has five different remastered versions (that I have found so far) and the best sounding one is the first digital transfer from The Greatest Hits album. It sounds the most original and the most authentic to what the record was meant to be. That’s how I want to listen to music. I can’t even find an original digital copy of the album, Rumours. There are remastered versions from 2001, 2002, 2004, and a newer 2018 remaster of “Dreams.” They all have a heavier bass presence but do not have that blobby sub-bass distortion and cringe worthy cymbal hits like the 2004 version. I have listened to all of these and the one that is most like the original is the 2001 remastered. But I will always recommend the original over any “remastered” album or record. If it were my mix, I would have kept the record the way it was recorded and mixed originally. It sounds great and has had a huge influence on many modern artists without needing remastered/altered versions. If it has to be remasters, all that is needed is a proper increase in overall volume level. This can be achieved by running the stereo mix through a limiter. It is important to make sure all the dynamics are still intact and to not overload the limiter and cause distortion. Mastering should not be about changing the sound of a record. It should be about preserving the original intent of the mix unless otherwise requested by who created it. Mastering is an important step in releasing music commercially, especially when there are so many different digital platforms with their own audio algorithms and output levels. They all sound different but the one I find that sounds the best is Amazon Music Unlimited. It’s not the most popular streaming platform but it should be. But that’s for another time.
