Adventures in backloggery with Homefront: The Revolution

To say the first Homefront left me lukewarm after playing it would imply that I was left feeling anything after that game finished. Painfully derivative with nothing to say about it’s interesting premise, I left that game fully understanding why so many people dismissed it. 

For those unfamiliar with the premise of Homefront, here it is, fresh from the wikipedia page: “The game tells the story of a resistance movement fighting in the near-future against the military occupation of the Western United States by a Korea unified under Kim Jong-un.”

Sounds interesting right? Telling a guerrilla warfare story based on American soil gives you a chance to take a lot of war-story tropes and twist them into new, interesting forms. Turning America into the occupier instead of the occupier offers a lot to explore. Sadly the original game does nothing like that - instead opting for a very simple “We wanted to take back America and we did” story.

So when I overheard through my gaming circles that the general perception of Homefront: The Revolution was hovering around the 6/10 mark, I was under the impression that while it was an improvement over the first game, it was still not a title that was worth my time. I assumed it was a decent yet uninspiring corridor shooter just like the original game.

Imagine my surprise then when I watched one of the latest videos from Jarek the Gaming Dragon and discovered that my preconceptions about shooting dudes in corridors were entirely wrong! This was an open world shooter, in the vein of Far Cry. And not only that, but the story actually has things to say this time!

Instead of North Korea invading the USA due to them being weakened, North Korea becomes a tech powerhouse. Due to poor decisions by their government, the USA slowly goes into financial ruin while they opt to purchase military technology from North Korea.

North Korea provides aid to the US, but this is just a pretence to establish a foothold and exploit the natural resources within the continent. This is presented as the real reason behind the occupation - because we all know that only evil governments invade foreign countries in order to exploit their natural resources, right?

It’s important to note when talking about the story of this game that playing Homefront: The Revolution in the apocalyptic year that is 2020 makes it hit much different than it would have in 2016. For example, the USA neglecting it’s citizens while spending billions on military weaponry is far too close to reality to even be called satire at this point. However, the he game is very ‘gung-ho’ in it’s expression of American values and honour - which clashed with my current view of the country.

At this point in time, seeing America do things wrong is something that happens on a monthly basis - and seeing people who want to shift the blame for that onto other people is an equally common occurrence. So seeing America ruin itself definitely removes a lot of the sympathy I have for the country as a whole - I of course still sympathise for the common citizen underneath this new regime, but seeing America complain about a foreign power using military might to seize their natural resources isn’t something I can sympathise with the American government suffering through at this point.

Speaking of regimes, seeing Americans actively fighting against a regime who happily deploy lethal force against American citizens (who resist and go against their military police enforced status quo) has also sparked many comparisons to recent events in the US in my mind. I mean, how can it not at this point?

The game does make some effort to comment on the fact that you’re creating more bloodshed and destruction through your actions, but that voice is drowned out by two of the main characters - who’s attitude is “Fuck you, this is America and this is war.” Seeing these characters passionately talk about standing up against the exact evils that America is committing right now makes the whole thing smack of hypocrisy - which isn’t the games fault, but I’d be disingenuous if I didn’t admit it has coloured how I viewed the plot heavily.

Overall, I think the plot does more to explore the themes of the setting than the original Homefront did, but it’s still bogged down in presenting America as the flawless and eternal hero who channels the ‘American Spirit’ through their actions. And this absolutely smacks of hypocrisy in the nightmare-world of 2020.

Also, there is an area of the game where you have to wear a gas mask to survive, but none of the other characters do. They’re expressing their freedoms to breath deadly toxins, I guess?

When it comes to gameplay, it’s not quite true to say that Homefront: The Revolution is a open world game - rather the game is split into a number of open world areas that you unlock as you progress. Keeping different parts of the world silo’d off from each other definitely has benefits from a programming point of view (you don’t have to account for players deciding to go from one side of the map to the other without a loading screen, for one) it also has interesting design implications.

Instead of having to level-gate certain areas of the open world, the game can properly pace each area to your current skill and gear level. You’re also introduced to the different types of zones in a more natural way, and their different mechanics are able to exist separately.

There are two types of area in the game - red zones and yellow zones. These both behave differently in how they express the thematic oppression through gameplay, but I was impressed at just how effective the systems in both areas are at making you feel oppressed.

And that brings me to one of the best things about Homefront: The Revolution - the sense of oppression it expresses through gameplay. It’s important to note that I was playing the game on the hardest difficulty, so this might colour my perception slightly, but I always felt outgunned during almost all my time in the game.

The red zones play similarly to a Far Cry open world, with objectives to complete, collectables to hunt and roaming enemies to attack/get attacked by. Unlike Far Cry however, the environment being full of ruined buildings adds a degree of verticality to the encounters and exploration that makes the smaller world feel much denser than the jungle floor ever did. Here, the game expresses the oppression of the player character through the constant vigilance of patrols and ever-present seeker blimps. These patrol the sky and scan the ground (think the flying drones in Terminator) and will always call in enough reinforcements to kill you. Having to hide under the ruins of collapsed buildings to avoid their search light as they slowly flew overhead always felt tense.

The yellow zones play more like the open world sections of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, with a bigger emphasis on stealth and avoidance of security cameras etc. These areas are typically much more dense than the open red zones, with plenty of corridors and corners to help you break line of sight with enemy patrols. The sheer density of enemies and ways to get spotted in these areas makes you feel constantly on edge, especially when fighting your way out is often a risky option.

And while it doesn’t have as much of an impact, even the health system helps contribute to this sense of oppression. Gone is the regenerating health system, now replaced with a more traditional health bar that must be topped up with healing kits. When you get spotted and enemies take some of your health away, they’re actively chipping away at your resources. This makes each encounter far more threatening, because even if they can’t kill you, they can still whittle you down.

I’m not really a gun guy when it comes to games. It usually takes a game going above and beyond, like in DOOM (2016), to make me actually notice the guns in a game. And oh boy, did I notice the guns in Homefront: The Revolution. Not only do they sound amazing, but they’re extremely well animated and customisable.

The coolest gameplay mechanic in the game is by far the gun customisation mechanic. To summarise, each weapon has two drastically different alternative modes that effect how the gun performs. For example, you can change the stealth-enabling crossbow into a room clearing flamethrower should the need arise. And you can do this on-the-fly while you’re in the game.

Hoping behind cover to change my assault rifle into a sniper rifle in order to take out distant enemies never stopped feeling cool. Seeing the detailed animation of you customising the gun yourself went a massive way in that feeling of coolness. You can also add attachments to your weapons such as silencers in order to adapt to situations as they arrise.

Having you perform these actions yourself adds a lot to the feeling of being a scrappy resistance fighter, having to create your own tools for the job at hand.

Despite all this praise, I can still see why this game sits at a 6/10 rating. Numerous times during my playthrough I would get hard crashes that would require a complete exit from the game. At one point, an NPC blocked a doorway and I needed to reload from a recent checkpoint to escape my new NPC created prison.

I’ve heard that on launch the game was even worse technically, and while the game is definitely good in my eyes, I can see how technical issues could make you easily lose patience with it. It doesn’t quite reach the levels of praise where I’m willing to fully overlook the crashes I’ve experienced, and if it was worse I could see that effecting my view of the game.

Also, the stealth system leaves much to be desired. Despite coming out 4 years after Far Cry 3, the game does nothing to improve on the basic stealth system that game established of “If I see you, my triangle is going to get bigger until I really see you”. This under-baked stealth system led to me mostly abandoning stealth once I’d gained enough gear to handle encounters, despite me being a big fan of stealth options.

Overall, I’m glad that I gave Homefront: The Revolution a shot after all these years of it sitting in my Steam library. At this point, open world titles have a long list of ‘must haves’ thanks to the ubiquity of Ubisoft titles refining the genre. When looking at these titles then, it becomes a case of looking at what is done differently, and the gun system, feeling of oppression and divided world have definitely left an impact on me as a game design nerd.

If you’re looking for an open-world game and don’t mind the occasional crash, it’s definitely worth looking past those 6/10 reviews for the 7.5/10 game that is lurking underneath.

Dead Island 2 Was Always Going to Be Set in Los Angeles, Even After Three Developers

A short time after the first Dead Island's release and a little more than a year after Dead Island Riptide, the lacklustre and repetitive sequel that at least carried on the story of the survivors from the previous game, Dead Island 2 was revealed. After Riptide, the developer Deep Silver created a few spinoffs, including Escape Dead Island, Dead Island: Epidemic, and the 16-bit beat 'em up Dead Island Retro Revenge. However, despite being mentioned over ten years ago, a full-scale, numbered sequel has yet to be produced. The first iteration of Dead Island 2 was helmed by Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager, as Dead Island developer Techland had parted ways with the property and worked on Dying Light. Deep Silver then handed over development of the game to LittleBigPlanet 3 developer Sumo Digital in 2016, but then, in 2019, Deep Silver announced that Homefront: The Revolution developer Dambuster Studios would be handling Dead Island 2. And that studio has been working on this game since 2018. In my cover story trip to Dambuster’s Nottingham, England studio, various members on the team told me it started with a fresh, clean slate for Dead Island 2. But curiously, Dead Island 2, due out in April, is still set in Los Angeles, California, the setting revealed in the game’s first reveal trailer in 2014. Despite seemingly having the opportunity to make Dead Island 2 precisely what it wanted it to be in every way, Dambuster stuck with LA, lovingly referred to in-game and by the studio as Hell-A. I asked game director David Stenton about this decision and apparently, a different setting was never really on the table. “I don’t remember there being a lot of debate about doing anything other than LA,” Stenton tells me. “I think for us, we wanted to apply real focus to the game… to the combat and that also extends to the setting as well. LA is such a fantastic iconic location, we didn’t really feel like we needed to bring in any other areas.” Stenton is likely alluding to the game’s original logo when it was first revealed in 2014. The D in “Dead” features the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco's iconic landmark. Dambuster tells me that Dead Island 2 will take place in Los Angeles exclusively, so don’t plan on making your way to San Francisco or any other California locations in the main campaign. “It just gives us so much opportunity… for the game that we wanted to make, so it wasn’t really a big debate,” Stenton says. It’s important to note, however, that despite what the team says about sticking with LA, using the same location from the original reveal – the location fans have assumed Dead Island 2 takes place in for nearly a decade – doesn’t hurt the marketing of this game. While the team feels confident LA is the place for its zombie game, it might also just have made the decision to stick with the location fans have presumed as this sequel’s setting for so long. “We started with a clean slate, absolutely, with our own vision,” Stenton says. “We’re not looking too much at sort of what happened in the past or looking at too many other games out there. Игровые и не совсем итоги года

По традиции, перед Новым годом я строчу итоги. Все предыдущие итоги находится в моем дневнике на Дайри, но это будет безрассудным поступком перенести их сюда, ведь сейчас мы прощаемся с 2017 а не 2016 иль 2015 годами. 2017 год станет первым моих итог не на Дайри и к сожалению старые посты, мнения, по играм приобретенные в этом году я не успела перенести на тумбу. (Старые записи я выделяю заголовком «Из старых записей»)  Ииииии понеслась душа в рай

1) Игровые итоги

В этом году я приобрела и прошла чуть больше 20 игр на PlayStation. Из них в 17 я добилась платинового трофея. Т.к мнения о каждой игре я высказываю более менее подробно здесь, то  сейчас строчить рефераты я  не буду, да и вообще у меня это плохо получается. Игры идут по мере приобретения именно в этом году, по  пятибалльной шкале моя оценочка (и прошу не принимать все близко к сердцу, все мы взрослые люди здесь и имеем право на мнения.)

Осторожно, много букв

1 - Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordo (получен платиновый трофей).- 4

Тени в состоянии заинтересовать игрока на определённое время, к сожалению, необычной стратегией и красивой боевкой игре не удастся держать вас в стазисе более 2 дней. Т.к геймплейно она мне очень зашла, я не могу сказать о ней плохого. Более того, насколько мне известно, фанаты кинца вполне себе тоже довольны.

 2 -  Layers of Fear (пройден до 100%).  - 5

Хороша для тех, кто любит поразмышлять над сюжетом и копошиться в чужом белье. Никогда не считала себя любопытной, но в таком шкафу как Layers of fear грешно не полазать. Игра красива, интересна и захватывающая, но к сожалению не для всех (К слову, именно после прохождения Layers of fear я стала пытаться рисовать)

3 - Skyrim (получен платиновый трофей) - 5

Ну, такое, да и не похвалить)) Мне есть смысл что-либо о ней писать, а? Она ведь лучшая в своём роде. Я так вообще ее два раза проходила, и на PS3 и PS4

4 - Outlast 2 (платиновый трофей) - 5

Очередной хоррор, и совершенно неповторимый аутласт. Страшный, грязный, мерзкий,  прекрасный, превосходный  Outlast! Приятная графина, отличный сюжет, и единственная игра в которой ты не качок со стальными яйцами. Вот за что я ее люблю

5 - Ведьмак 3 (игра заброшена на середине) – 2

Мне бы скорее всего игра понравилась если бы я родилась с членом. Ну серьёзно, больше положительных отзывов я вычитываю и слышу от парней. Да, открытый мир. Да, боевка. Да, что-то там ещё. А по сути, всю игру предстоит перетрахать весь женский пол, посылать к куях собачьим мимо крокодилов, поорать во всю глотку о том, насколько ты крутой ведьмак и равных тебе нет. Вот что я в ней увидела. Побочные квесты хороши, не спорю, но это все что я могу о ней сказать. Будь ГГ более благородней я хотя бы осилила сюжет...

6 - TEKKEN 7 (платиновый трофей) - 5

Теккен как и был одним из лучших файтингов, таковым и остаётся. Несмотря на большое наличие разных игр данного жанра, теккен запомнится всем и каждому харизматичными персонажами, интересными биографиями и естественно бесконечным количеством приёмов. В теккен 7 лично мне не понравилось присутствие новых лиц. Я не имею ничего против новичков, проблема в том что они не интересны (как и в мкх). В целом же теккен не потерял свою этакую изюминку.

7 - Homefront: The Revolution   (платиновый трофей) - 3

На самом деле, я не совсем понимаю, как можно исковеркать ��утер до такой степени. Я люблю шутер, и играю порой часто. Но такое управление как homefront совершенно непростителен для шутера. Чтобы понять о чем я говорю, нужно хотя бы одну главу пройти.

8 - The Last Guardian (платиновый трофей) - 5

Игра очень тяжёлая в плане сюжета, я не люблю такие игры. Видимо из-за своей наивности и любови к животным мне тяжело было смотреть на некоторые сцены. Геймплей не настолько захватывающий как сам Трико. Да в ней вообще ничего нет кроме Трико

9 -  For Honor (платиновы трофей) - 4

Для любителей средневековых баталий и нечестных боев. Будь в ней менее мульплеера (и школоты) я бы стала ее фанатом, но, увы.  

10 - Dead or Alive 5 (платиновый трофей) - 4

Очередной файтинг который мне запомнился как 'хардкорный хентай'. Мало того, что в файтингах я не могу похвастаться рекордами иль назваться одним из лучших игроков (скорее худших мне больше подходит), такой сложный файтинг мне никогда не встречался. Мне было сложно абсолютно все, как и просто набить неплохую комбинацию так и парировать удар. Совершенно не впечатлили персонажи которых скорее всего рисовались с порно звёзд. Если бы не Рю игры бы у меня и не было

11- Persona 5 (пройдена первая глава) - 0

Ничего не могу о ней сказать, т.к меня хватило на одну главу. Игра исключительно для отаку, видать мне далеко до анимешника. Оценку выставить тоже не могу, потому что НЕ МОГУ

12- Catherine (платиновый трофей) - 4

Все шло мирно гладко, интересно и интригующе... Пока не появился пазл и не стал ипать мне мозги… Игра на любителя, присутствует хороший сюжет, запоминающие персонажи, наличие разных концовок и аниме с годной рисовкой. Гемплейно игра проходилась с ютубом, чуть ли не с самого начала. В плане геймплея единственное что мне понравилось, так это дубасить подушкой барашек. Все на этом

13 - Aragami (платиновый трофей) - 5

Один из самых приятных стелс игр в этом году. Таинственный, красивый, нереальный. Во время прохождения я полностью расслаблялась и уходила в игру, словно она меня дурманила. Aragami оставила после себя только приятны�� впечатления  

14 - Yakuza 0 (платиновы трофей) - 5

Якудза 0 стала моей первой игрой серии, а также одной из тех игр, которую я полюбила из-за персонажа. Она необычна, новичкам покажется игра от пришельцев. Но если же в нее вникнуть, и постараться понять, то есть вероятность зафанеть также  как это происходило со мной недолгое время.  Но к сожалею, мой интерес к серии сбит благодаря малолетним долбаебам… Эх. Обидно даже как-то.

15 - Resident Evil 7 (платиновый трофей)  – 2

Сплошное разочарование и моя глобальная ошибка.

 16 - Berserk and The Band of Hawk ( платиновый трофей) оценка – 3

Моя первая игра жанра мусоу, поняла для себя, что жанр совершенно не мой. По правде говоря, приобрела из-за одноименного аниме, будь это не Берсерк а что-то другое, то скорее всего я бы и не стала тратить на нее свое время и деньги

17 - Bioshock (платиновый трофей)  – 4

18 - Bioshock 2 (платиновый трофей) - 5

 19 - Yakuza: Dead Souls (платина)  – 4

Отталкивает и затягивает одновременно, Отталкивает однообразным, скучным и кривым (внезапно после Yakuza 0) шутаном, затягивает юмором, персонажами и смешным в какой-то степени сюжетом. Игра на один раз, кат-сцены можно пересматривать вечно

20 - Nioh (в процессе) оценочка – 4

Отсутствие баланса не может «не радовать», очень смешно наблюдать затем как твой самурай будучи 70 лвл не в состоянии одолеть босса 20 лвл. Меня конечно можно обвинить в рукожопстве, но я без чей-либо помощи прошла Bloodborne, Demons Souls и Dark Souls 2. Так что…

4) Персонажи года

1 - Орочи (For Honor)

За первое место в моем списке боролись Орочи и Маджима. Но т.к благодаря Орочи я узнала про Маджиму, и именно благодаря Орочи я стала интересоваться японскими играми и Японией в целом, он заслуживает первого место

Орочи  не раскрыт как и все воины For Honor, не смотря на это, он является последним и ключевым персонажем сюжетной линии. Охарактеризовать его вполне возможно если сильно постараться. И вообще, мы с ним через огонь и воду прошли пока добирались до платины

2 - Маджима Горо (Yakuza 0)

Мне хватило 10 минутного просмотра стрима, чтобы понять, насколько Маджима интересен как персонаж. В нем мне нравится абсолютно все, начиная с характера и заканчивая незабываемой внешности, стилю. Внимание, речь идет о Yakuza 0 онли, в других частях он жалкий клоун

3 - Lee Chaolan (Tekken 7)

Чаолан всегда был моим фаворитом в Теккене, в семерке я его еще больше полюбила и благодарна разработчикам за то, что они его наконец нормально одели... 

Не переношу на дух дешевый пафос, но Чаоланчику прощаю :3

 4 - Big Daddy Delta

Во-первых, мне его жалко. Во-вторых, связь между Биг Дэдди и мелкой вызывают слезные приступы

Фэйлы года

1) Мне все еще не удалось бросить курить.

2) В этом году я еще больше похудела, и чуть ли не стала дистрофиком. Благо в последние дни появился аппетит, борюсь 

3) Хейтеры. В 2017 году сидя на попе ровно, никого не трогая, подцепила двух  хейтеров в вк.(Первых хейтеров в соц сетях за всю свою жизнь). Первый хейтер - женского пола приревновала меня к Ермаку из знаменитого файтинга МК. Немалое время просила полюбить какого-ниб другого персонажа серии (или найти в реале парня и забыть про Ермака) и требовала не рисовать его вообще. Публично строчила обо мне веселые посты с тегами, фотографиями и ссылками на мою страницу. 

Второй хейтер - мужского пола, фанат серии Yakuza. Нацист. Стал бомбить из-за выбитой мною платины в Yakuza 0 и Маджимы на аватаре. Возможно пишет обо мне веселые посты с ссылками и фотографиями.

4) Временная должность в налоговой инспекции

1) Воссоединение с другом который мне симпатичен 

2) В этом году я поняла, что все же удалось найти человека, который общается со мной не из-за выгоды и я могу гордо сказать, что у меня есть друг, который поддержит в трудную минуту. (Это не тот, который в первой категории)

3) Знакомство с Сэнсэем. Фанатом серии Якудза, мои учителем в маджонг. Наша последняя переписка закончилась тем, что он заставлял меня приобрести Якудза 4 и 5. Как же ему теперь сообщить, что на серию, благодаря некоторым личностям, у меня уже не стоит(

4) Стала пытаться рисовать. Получается из рук вон плохо, но я хочу. Надеюсь в дальнейшем найти преподавателя и обучиться хотя бы основам. Потихоньку пилю все свое тварчество сюда, но не хочу все за раз. А вот Пирамидушка в клетку, мой самый первый срисунок. Гуашь (Если верить дайри это произошло 17 января 2017) 

Мне больше ничего в голову не лезет, либо в этом году было настолько все плохо, либо у меня старческий склероз. Дополню пост позже если че вспомню

Homefront: In the mid-21st century, the US has been in economic dire straits for about a decade after suffering a serious epidemic, leading to the overall dismantling of its military which it could no longer afford while millions are sick and starving. In the ensuing power vacuum, North Korea became an expansionist empire until, years later, they were finally rich and powerful enough to invade the US.

Homefront: The Revolution: The discovery of a shitload of silicon or something in North Korea made them an economic powerhouse since the 1970s, making the best electronics in the world. The North Korean APEX was like the entire US military-industrial complex, Apple, Microsoft and Google rolled into one. They also installed a magic backdoor in literally every piece of American military hardware and at some point just decided to turn it all off, out of the blue. Also apparently the GWOT went nuclear in Saudi Arabia in 2016 for some reason. Anyway, apparently Americans are out of food without their military something something something the Norks invade.

You know, people always gave Homefront a lot of shit for its seemingly implausible antagonists, but at least they set up a somewhat plausible backstory for it to happen in the first one. (And besides, it’s a lot easier to take in stride when you remember that North Korea’s a stand-in for China, it’s just that they want to be able to sell the game there too). I actually appreciated that they didn’t do what so many others have done where it’s like, “Oh no, the Bad Guys have found our military’s Magic Off Switch and are parachuting into the Burger Town!”

I am genuinely confused as to why they retconned it in favor of a half-assed Magic Off Switch scenario. But hey, at least the gameplay is solid.

god its a fucking shame what happened to free radical cause they made like 4 really good ps2 games (timesplitters series and second sight) then just seemed to flounder afterwards

they made haze for the ps3 and that was...dumb, then they got brought out by crytek and made to just do shit for crysis, then crytek had to shut them down when they ran into financial troubles and the dregs ended up with deep silver and made...homefront the revolution, which was on several “worst games of 2016″ lists

i think crytek holds the rights to timesplitters now and they seem to be happy with rewind being a thing so maybe if it does well they’ll revive the series but i just feel sad about a company that started off very strong and only seem to have gotten worse
