Are Video Game Subscription Services the Way of the Future?

Hey there guys! Sorry it’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Things have been busy over here in the Gaming Den, with the soft relaunch of the AWSM Games Podcast! But, I’m back and hopefully will be contributing more regularly. So without further ado, let’s get into things!

Not long ago, EA Access was announced to finally launch on the PlayStation 4, years after launching on Xbox One. Which got me thinking - there are a lot of video subscription services. While not all of them may work exactly the same, there are some basic foundations that all of them follow: you pay a monthly or annual cost, earn discounts and/or free games, and anything “free” is yours to keep as long as you maintain the subscription. The earliest I can recall something like this coming to fruition is PlayStation Plus, with the integration of the what was then called the Instant Games Collection. Before PS+ was required for online play on PlayStation consoles, PlayStation 3 owners were treated to this top tier service which gave consumers cloud storage for save data, exclusive pricing on certain items, and above all - a selection of full fledge titles to keep as long as they maintained a subscription. It was a bold move for PlayStation and has certainly paid off as it continues to this day on PlayStation 4 albeit with some changes.

Fast forward a few years later, Xbox adapted a similar program and called it Games with Gold. Every month, there would be two titles (typically one Xbox One and one 360 title) for the first half of that month that Xbox Live Gold members could download and keep, then those two would rotate out during the second half of the month for another set. Like the Instant Game Collection, consumers could keep these games as long as they maintained an active subscription.

These two services were huge, as they gave buyers huge savings on games just for purchasing a membership they were already going to need in order to play online. Late adopters for consoles could use these as a way of starting a catalogue of games without having to actually purchase one at the same time.

Move forward another few years and we now live in the age of PlayStation Now and Xbox Game Pass. The concept for both is a similar one - you pay a fee, and you can stream or download select titles. PS Now launched first in 2015 in North America, though with complications. All the games were streamed over wifi, through select Bravia TV’s, the Vita, PS3, and later PS4. This was PlayStation’s answer to backwards compatibility, as this library of games spanned all the back to the PS1. Plans and pricing were expensive and confusing, and the games had issues due to wifi connection. PS Now was then met with disdain and soon all but forgotten. Nowadays it’s been revamped with a similar model, but many consider the damage already done.

Xbox on the other hand has had major success with the Game Pass program. Users pay $10 a month, and they can download a plethora of titles to their consoles and play as long as the subscription is current. Xbox then made the program even more enticing as they now launch all 1st party titles on Game Pass on day one of the game’s launch. Players could play $60 titles for $10 without having the leave the house.

Now back to EA Access. It was first announced in 2014 as an Xbox exclusive, offering subscribers early access to EA titles, discounts on their games, and free titles from the EA Vault. While it hasn’t taken off in a massive wave, it is a nice way for one of the world’s largest publishers get more exposure to newcomers and yet reward those who play a great amount of their games. Now, 5 years later, this is coming to PlayStation 4.

Now in 2019, Google is joining the video game fray with the Google Stadia. Stadia will use anything that uses Google Chrome and wifi to allow players to stream video games with cloud technology. Right now the biggest question for them is how pricing will work. Will you be able to buy digital rights to games and just play without having to install? Or will there be a hefty subscription you will have to pay for and just have unlimited access to their library?

In the end though, as history has shown us, gamers like subscriptions. Anything where we can pay for a membership and be given access to great sale prices or free games will always be a nice thing. In time though, will we see that be the way more games are played? Will there be a Netflix-like video game subscription service that will just allow us to pick a game to download/stream? Honestly, I would be surprised to see it not happen within the next 5 years. But who knows!? But I can say this, I’ll be here to put the news out when and if it happens!

SUPER LATE POST >.< GAHHHHHHH !! I now have 1 week (from Mon-Fri) off bcos of Banked Stat days & such.. so I’m planning to catch up on posts & file my 2021 stuff nicely.

This work delivery dinner was back in mid-December when I was working evening shifts & it was really cold then!

My coworker friend DT & I ordered delivery thru her Ubereats app bcos she had some sort of promo so it was free delivery month for her :D yayyyyy! I understand the importance & necessary delivery fee but sometimes it hurts to see how much it is, you know? Plus the app charges slightly more for the actual menu item.. & then you gotta tip the driver, which is like ANOTHER fee you gotta pay. Even as food delivery apps really took off in recent yrs, I STILL do not have any food delivery apps besides SFC. ..

So it was a cold evening & so we had decided weeks before that we would order from Dagu Rice Noodle. I miss their unlimited noodle refills NGL lol I wondered how they do it with delivery or take-out.

Well, here’s the answer. Based on my experience, the amount of noodles they give is approx 1.5 bowls of their regular serving for dine-in. So you do get slightly more than 1 bowl, which I was very happy about!

As for my order & how it comes. ..

I got the B4 noodle (without any added toppings/meat); it is the Mountain Cliff Mushrooms Crossing the Bridge Rice Noodles! I just loooooove the flavours of the mushrooms in soups~ It’s a level-up from the basic one, richer & more fragrant, & more depth! I recommend it if you’re new to this place but don’t wanna settle for just the “original”. The bowl for the soup was like. .. big haha & then the plate of noodles just sits on top of it - so it’s a 2-level packing system. Then the lid on top, obviously. It’s a very convenient & effective packaging.

Next, we also ordered dessert in the form of drinks - Bubbletea from The Alley.

We didn’t know there’s a location in Brewery District........... so we ordered from here to try. We got 3 drinks: our individual ones, plus the Iron Goddess Milk Tea, which is one of their signature drinks (sorry, didn’t get a picture of this one).

My individual drink = crunchy tiramisu milk tea

So first of all, the texture was “weird” ... like I wasn’t a fan.

The majority of the drink was kind icy/slushy (imagine a Timmy’s iced cap). You can bite into bits of icy. There was (soggy) ‘crunchy’ from what I think is some sort of biscuit. The sago was also bad... I like the sago chewy but this was almost hard & under-cooked. It was sad & disappointing. So overall, I didn’t like this drink much. Even with the decreased sugar content, I still find it too sweet; however, it was the texture that got me. I would much rather get an iced cap for like 1/3 of the price.

The Iron Goddess milk tea- we got it with less sugar & no ice. The tea they used was the iron Goddess one that I am oh-so-familiar with. My family usually orders that during dimsum, & we have that tea at home too. I haven’t tried this tea with milk before, let alone in milk tea format. The milk tea itself was good; although I think going less-er sugar would even be better. & the sago .. just no-no =(

Why the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Paywall for N64 and Sega Genesis Games Is a Terrible Idea

Almost every announcement in the September 2021 Nintendo Direct broadcast tried to one-up the other reveals. Audiences finally got the long-awaited Bayonetta 3 gameplay trailer (it was every bit as exciting as we hoped), minutes after the internet was left to decide whether to shout “Wahoo!” or “Mamma mia!” over the Super Mario movie voice cast. But the highlight of the mini-expo, even though virtually everyone predicted it, was the announcement that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can soon play Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games… assuming they pay for a more expensive subscription model. Something doesn’t smell right.

Before we continue, here’s a quick refresher. For only $20 a year, Nintendo Switch Online hands gamers access to online multiplayer features, voice chat, save data cloud functionality, and an ever-growing collection of NES and SNES games. Sounds like a steal, especially compared to PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold, which ask for $60 annually and only offer a trickle of free games instead of an archive’s worth. But the devil is in the details.

Nintendo Switch Online’s voice chat is a smartphone app that isn’t compatible with all devices, and the save data cloud is on a per-game basis. Want to back up your Splatoon 2 or Pokémon Sword/Shield progress? Tough luck. Oh, and even though you need the subscription to play titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online, lag is a constant bugbear that can render matches unplayable. Back when Nintendo offered free multiplayer, lag was expected and even forgivable in games like Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, but now players need to pay for online multiplayer even though lag hasn’t improved. Makes you wonder why Nintendo wants to charge even more money.

Starting late October, Nintendo will sell a “new membership plan” dubbed “Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.” This new subscription will provide “more benefits” (no idea what they are), and the company plans to provide further details, including pricing, at a later date. The wording implies the Expansion Pack will be more expensive than vanilla Nintendo Switch Online, which stinks of unnecessary paywalling. But, the catalyst that makes the stench unpalatable is the addition of N64 and Sega Genesis titles. Sure, it’s nothing short of a miracle to play games from Nintendo’s ancient blast-processing rival on the Switch, but locking them behind an additional fee seems questionable…maybe even greedy.

Audiences have wanted N64 games on the Switch ever since Nintendo started providing complimentary NES and SNES titles with subscriptions. This would have been an obvious evolution for the service, but virtually everyone who hoped Nintendo would add N64 games expected them to come at no additional cost. That is the industry standard, after all. Sorta. PlayStation and Xbox consoles have evolved into Netflix-esque video game platforms via PS Now and Xbox Game Pass, which are separate from PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, but they don’t come in different tiers. Anyone with a PS Now account gets hundreds of games on demand for a flat-ish fee. It’s cheaper to buy a year’s worth of PS Now than to purchase a new game each month à la carte, but subscribers can play everything on the menu regardless; Sony doesn’t hide titles like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots or Rogue Galaxy behind extra fees. So why is Nintendo going down that path? Nobody at the company has explained the reasoning behind the decision, so we can only speculate.

One reason comes to mind, though. Nintendo likely recognizes the N64’s popularity and knows gamers will shell out to relive those classics. Sure, the N64 itself didn’t push as many units as the Nintendo 3DS, but look at any best Legend of Zelda games list. The N64 entries, Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, are always at or near the top. Same with best Super Mario games lists. Moreover, the SNES Classic sold out in nanoseconds. Clearly demand for retro games is big enough to smother supply, so why would Nintendo potentially cap profits with limited physical N64 Classics when they can sell unlimited, new N64-themed subscriptions? You can’t exactly sell out of a digital product, now can you?

Under normal circumstances, we would give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt, but this new subscription is merely the latest in a concerningly growing list of questionable decisions that started with the amiibo. At first, the mini plastic statues only provided fun, superfluous extras, such as bonus Mario Kart Mii costumes and special Super Smash Bros. CPU fighters. But lately, Nintendo has locked some decidedly overpowered enhancements behind amiibo. Two special Metroid Dread amiibo (that are already sold out everywhere) will provide players with extra health and missile tanks; be thankful the game doesn’t sport competitive multiplayer, because anyone who owns the amiibo would have an advantage merely because they dropped an extra $30. And who can forget when the internet temporarily caught fire over the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD amiibo that strong armed players out of $25 for fast travel?

But, amiibo are not the only indicators. The SNES controllers for the Switch were $30 at launch (and still are). Meanwhile, the upcoming N64 and Sega Genesis controllers for the Switch are $50 each. The N64 controller’s price hike makes a bit of sense since it sports more buttons and an analog stick, but the Sega Genesis is basically a SNES controller with fewer buttons. Anyone who purchases it is literally paying more for less.

Now to be fair, Nintendo is keeping a lot of Expansion Pack details under wraps. We don’t know its non-N64/Genesis library benefits or price tag. If the new membership only costs $1 more and gives customers bonuses like monthly game discounts, free Switch eShop titles for keeps, and eventually Sega Dreamcast games, it might be more than worth the extra cash. On the other hand, if the new subscription is $10 extra, and its only new benefit lets players pre-order games early, then it will be a worse benefit-cost ratio than vanilla Nintendo Switch Online.

No matter how you slice it, though, you cannot deny that locking Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games behind a new subscription with a new price seems pretty cynical since the current subscription doesn’t really justify its cost. Then again, Nintendo will probably get away with it because we’re talking about the N64 and Sega Genesis; anything from those consoles prints money, regardless of the year.

The land of the rising sun is the home of the most exorbitant cities in the world and I took on the challenge of traveling for 8 days from Tokyo to Osaka. Prior the travel, I was anxious that I would overspend in Japan but as my excursion started, I was proven wrong day by day. After eight full days in Japan, I only spent under Y50,000 (P25,000) and I have broken my tips on four categories on how to travel Japan on a budget because you don’t have to break your bank to hit that road to the land of anime, technology, and rich culture. (I will have a separate post for the itinerary)

1.Transportation

A. Across Japan

The prominent way to commute around Japan is thru JR Railways. There are different options available for travelers: 7, 14 or 21 days. This includes the unlimited use of Shinkansen (Bullet Train) and all JR lines. However, this comes with a hefty price. The 7 days ordinary pass costs Y29,110 (P14,555), while 14 days pass is Y46,390 (P23,195). I find JR line convenient as it is spread strategically across the country but simply put, I don’t have the budget for it. Instead, I used the less prominent lines.

B. Tokyo to Hakone (2.5 hours per way)

For Hakone area, there is Odakyu which allows you to travel unlimitedly between Shinjuku Station and Hakone proper. This ticket also allows you to hop on and off on all buses, trains, cable car, cruise and ropeway in Hakone for either two or three days which costs Y5,140 (P2,570) and 5,640(P2,820) respectively. Therefore, it is best to stay at least 2 days in this area and make most the most of your ticket. The ticket can be purchased on the day or ahead of time in Odakyu Shinjuku Station.

C. Tokyo to Nagoya (6 hours)

While the alternative transportation I used from Tokyo to Nagoya is Willer Express Bus. Buses run day and night and I chose to ride at midnight arriving at 6:00 am to also save a night of accommodation. Tickets costs from Y2,500 (P1,250) up to Y10,000 (P5,000) depending on the kind of seat and entertainment together with the ticket. Tickets may only be bought online at willerexpress.com.

D. Nagoya Area

Nagoya can be done in a day or two. It is a small city packed with museums and castles. In Nagoya Station, City Sightseeing Bus Loop is available in Bus Stop 11. The ticket costs Y500 (P250) for 1 full day. Again, it is a hop-on-and-off bus so it means unlimited ride in case you missed your stop.

E. Nagoya to Kyoto to Nara to Osaka (4 hours, 1 hour and 2 hours respectively)

From Nagoya, I traveled to Kyoto and neighboring cities using Kintetsu Railway. Kintetsu Railway Pass Plus is by far the most worthy of all commuter ticket I got. For only Y4,800 (P2,400), you can travel between the 4 key cities in an unlimited number of times for 5 consecutive days. Also, the ticket already includes the Nara City Loop Bus which means you can save Y500(Y250) a day. You may check here for more details and where you can buy this ticket.

Kyoto is my favorite place in Kansai area and because it is such a big city with tons of picturesque temples, shrines, and mountains, you must spend at least 2 full days here and start early. To get to places, you can buy an unlimited ride for a day ticket for Y500(P250) from your hostel or at Kyoto Station Bus Station.

2. Accommodation

A place to sleep at is one of the biggest factors in your travel budget. If you are uncomfortable sleeping with strangers in a room, then hostels and dorms are not for you. You may now skip this item and extend your budget 30% higher because Japan’s accommodation is really pricey than in most places in the world. But if it is fine with you and you find it enthralling to meet and hear tales from fellow travelers, there are a lot of options to choose from. It is not really scary; in fact, most travelers are open-minded and fun to talk with. And they might tell you tips and hidden secrets of places *winks*.

A bed in a hostel dorm costs at least Y1,500(P750). I know, It’s expensive than its Southeast Asia counterparts but what I can vouch is that Japan hostels (based on where I stayed at) are meticulously clean, comfortable and includes toiletries (except toothbrush though).

In Hakone area, I stayed at Hakone Tent near the Gora Station. I chose this place because of three reasons. First, it is just a 2-minute walk from the train station. Second, the rooms are traditional which uses tatami floorings and futons. Now that’s an authentic Japanese experience. Lastly, the private use of onsen is included. Like wow! Who would not want to soak in a warm mineralized bath after thousands of steps from visiting awesome places in Hakone? And it is all yours! A bed in a female dorm costs Y3,500(1,750) which can be booked through Hostelworld or Booking.com.

While in Kyoto, I stayed at Renjishi Kabuki for 4 nights at Y1,500(P750) a night. The neighborhood was quiet as it is not along the main road but still near the bus stop and just a few minutes away from Kyoto Station. It is just your another typical dorm except it has spacious double decks. The use of a locker is free and you may store your groceries in the kitchen and cook a warm meal.

3. Food

It is exceptionally sarcastic to tell you not to try food in Japan. I am no foodie lady so I was quite amazed I just kept munching in Japan. My Instagram @juiensoi is full of food flat-layered photos. But I have to say that proper meals in Japan usually costs Y1,000 (P500) and street foods are at least Y300 (P150).

What I did to save was to only feast once in a day or two. For breakfasts, I bought a loaf bread, raw egg or cooked ham to cook at the hostel and a pack of 4 probiotic milk. Now, this set would only damage you under Y1,000 (P500) and would last up to 4 days. For lunches, because I was always on the go, I just bought Onigiri (Japanese Rice Ball) from a convenience store which varies between Y100 (P50) to Y150 (P75). It comes with different fillings so you won’t easily get tired eating it everyday. And dinner is my favorite part of the day. As a nocturnal person, I am most hungry in this time of the day so usually, I eat large portions at Sukiya or Yoshinoya. Both stores are open 24 hours and a Gyuudon (Beef Rice Top Bowl) costs Y450 (P225).

But the most important part of food trip is the snacks in between meals. After saving from breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can now splurge on food stalls. Takoyaki, ramen, okonomiyaki, red bean sandwich, soft ice cream, and more. You name it and all of it is yummy. Osaka’s Takoyaki is really amazing and filling and when you’re in Dotombori, don’t forget to drop by at Uncle Rikuro’s jiggliest cheesecake. It costs Y600 (P300) for a whole cake.

4. Connectivity

Before coming to Japan, I have thought to avail a pocket wifi but it is costly to fit in my budget so I end up not subscribing to any wifi connectivity. But the plot twist here is that all major train stations and bus stops in Japan have a free wifi you can connect to. Just enter your email address and voila! you are connected. The Internet is something you would really need in Japan especially in navigation and train schedules and platforms. Japan’s train system is the most complex one I have experienced.

Japan is truly a wonderful country to visit and most tourist spots are free to enter so that would be additional savings for you. Visa and hefty prices were always the intimidating factors for any traveler but take chance and you will definitely know that it will be all worth it. I gave a list in Riverbend of what my mother should do since she was too much ofba herion addict to not return.

She didn't listen But Abu did and wrote it.

Such as minimal repairs and hiding money to give to the US government to divide amongst the people that are rescued

The second farm has 14M the leader knows about but Chris (US Marine) has stored away much more.

I said they are to be self sustaining victims

So the way I told Abu was they pay half their car or house and they get both for free whichever occurs first -- car or house being paid off half. So 3 years on a car.

Because he was doing a different release program.

But Uncle Donald and I and Abu has worked a financial program for a different issue that has failed to complete. And so we will base this recovery financing for the victims on that model and it has been tweaked a bit more to be more beneficial.

So we will place the already returned victims on this financial statement despite their character listing category.

Abu did rent to own furniture for some to earn their house and car. Which was under the ruling i gave. "They had to own something providing a domestic life to own everything"

And they will be paid back the fees they paid 3x regardless of the amount and they will recieve a lump sum of a rather high amount due to the fact they did not receive proper mental health care - although was available to them

I also have not received proper mental health care as i do write about my issues and where i am in amnesia,i believe the US government should has intervened and assisted me in a proper fashion and this did not occur. I did not attempt to get help because i did not know who to trust to get the specific specialized care i needed. Thus i do not blame the victims.

The governments are already paid to do thse things, they will receive no financial payments.

The governments will pay these fees they have already arranged for for a period of 11 years.

I worked for the Beauru of Indian Affairs finances for the US government when I was 18 so we based our financial system for the victims off that model. After 11 years we will change it to a better system
