THURSDAY HERO: Herbert Zipper
Herbert Zipper was a conductor and composer who founded a secret orchestra at Dachau, and wrote a song that became an anthem for death camp inmates.
Born in 1904 to an affluent Jewish family in Vienna, Herbert was a musical prodigy who studied at the prestigious Vienna Music Academy with the great composer Richard Strauss. He found employment as a conductor and composer for cabaret shows.
Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and immediately started persecuting Jewish citizens. Herbert was arrested that year and sent by the SS to Dachau, where he became a “horse,” pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with heavy rocks for 12 hours a day. One of the most talented composers in Europe was doing the work of an animal.
Herbert was not the only music man in Dachau. All the Jewish members of the Munich Philharmonic – comprising most of the orchestra – were also incarcerated there. Herbert enlisted the other musicians in an audacious, even insane, plan. They would make instruments and create an orchestra, right there at Dachau.
How could anybody create musical instruments in a concentration camp? They combed the camp for discarded pieces of wood and metal and fashioned eleven primitive yet functional instruments. At least one guard helped the musicians; Herbert requested a piece of wire for a string instrument, and later found it under his pillow.
Herbert’s Dachau orchestra performed concerts for the other inmates every Sunday, in an outhouse. It’s hard to imagine the experience of listening to sublime music in a filthy environment, while knowing they could be all killed for their participation. Herbert said that the concerts were not for entertainment, but rather to bring purpose and even a bit of normalcy back to their lives.
Noted playwright Jura Soyfer, an old friend of Herbert’s from his cabaret days, was also at Dachau. Together they wrote “Dachaulied” (Dachau song), with Herbert composing the haunting music in his head and Jura penning the sad, sardonic lyrics inspired by the concentration camp motto “Work will make you free.” They thought that writing the song would help them maintain some dignity in an atmosphere of constant humiliation and demonization. Herbert deliberately made the song difficult to learn, so that his fellow inmates would have to use all of their concentration and thereby mentally escape from their horrific surroundings. Amazingly, the Nazis never discovered the secret orchestra.
At the end of 1938, Herbert and Jura were transferred to Buchenwald where they taught other inmates the Dachau song. Soon after, Jura died of typhus at age 26, and Herbert lovingly prepared his body for burial. At this time Hitler hadn’t yet began to implement his “Final Solution” to kill all the Jews, which started in 1941. Herbert’s father Emil was in London, desperately trying to get a visa for Herbert and his two brothers to escape Austria. Miraculously, Emil was able to secure his sons’ release from Buchenwald, and they joined him in Paris on March 16, 1939.
During all this time, Herbert’s fiancee, dancer Trudl Dubsky, was working in Manila, in the Philippines. She recommended him for the job of conductor of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, and he was hired, traveling there in September, 1939. Herbert and Trudl were married on October 1. Although it wasn’t a world-class orchestra at the time, Herbert enjoyed working with the Manila Orchestra and under his leadership it improved dramatically. Life was good for Herbert and Trudl until January 1942, when the Japanese army invaded the Philippines and occupied Manila. It was a brutal occupation and once again Herbert was arrested, this time for refusing to conduct the orchestra for Japanese military officers. He was incarcerated and harshly interrogated for four months before being released. For the next three years Herbert and Trudl survived hand-to-mouth, owning no belongings and traveling frequently in search of safe haven in a country at war.
The most difficult period was the Battle of Manila in early 1945. More than once the building where they took shelter was bombed by the Japanese artillery and they escaped with only seconds to spare. In the end of February they were living with hundreds of other displaced people in a seven-story building in Manila that had neither electricity or water. Herbert volunteered to get water every day, a dangerous and difficult undertaking. On the early morning of February 26, 1945, Herbert was on his water run when he saw an opportunity to reach the American front line, and he rushed across a battle field to do it. While there he received a crucial piece of information: the apartment building where he was staying was due to be bombed by the Allies within fifteen minutes! Herbert desperately explained that 800-1000 civilians were inside the building! Due to his pleas, the bombardment was delayed for 45 minutes, giving him just enough time to get back to the building and rescue everyone inside including Trudl.
Until Japan was defeated on September 2, 1945, Herbert worked secretly for the American army under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, transmitting valuable information about Japanese shipping schedules by shortwave radio. When Japan finally surrendered, Herbert organized and conducted a concert of Beethoven’s “Eroica” symphony, a goal he’d set during the darkest hours at Dachau. The concert was performed in a bombed-out church.
Herbert and Trudl immigrated to America in 1946, joining the rest of his family. He co-founded and conducted the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, and organized another orchestra especially to give free concerts for public school children. Students called Herbert, who had no children of his own, “Papa Z.” For the rest of his life he volunteered and supported arts education for young people.
Herbert was close friends with poet Langston Hughes and they collaborated on an opera together, “Barrier.” Trudl worked as a ballet tacher. They moved to Chicago in 1953, where Herbert founded the Music Center of the North Shore, and then to Los Angeles, where Herbert directed the School of Performing Arts at USC.
Interviewed by a Los Angeles Times reporter at the end of his life, Herbert said “We have to see the world as it is, but we have to think about what the world could be. That’s what the arts are about.”
Herbert is the subject of a biography, “Dachau Song: The Twentieth Century Odyssey of Herbert Zipper,” and a documentary that was nominated for an Academy Award. His beloved wife Trudl died of lung cancer in 1976. He continued his music for two more decades, conducting his last concert in 1996. Herbert Zipper died in Santa Monica in 1997.
For inspiring concentration camp inmates and inner-city schoolchildren with his music, and for saving hundreds of lives during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, we honor Herbert Zipper as this week’s Thursday Hero.
Lyrics of Dachau Song:
Barbed wire fraught with death surrounds our world
On which a merciless heaven visits frost and sunburn.
Far from us are all joys, far our home, far the women
When mute we march to work, thousands in the gray dawn.
But we learned the Dachau motto and it made us hard as steel.
Be a man, comrade, remain human comrade
Do good work, pitch in, comrade
Because work, work will make you free!

TO STAY OR TO GO?
HI! The Nurse is In!🫀👋
As a professional over thinker, lately, I’ve been having this quiet tug-of-war in my mind:
“Should I stay and serve here in the Philippines? Or should I chase the dream of working abroad?”
If you're a nursing student like me, you've probably asked yourself this too or heard it in passing from classmates, clinical instructors, or even titas at family gatherings.
It’s not an easy question. It’s not just about salary or location. It’s about purpose, sacrifice, and what kind of nurse and person you want to be. So here’s me, laying it all out: the pros and cons, the heart and logic, the dreams and doubts.
🏠 Staying in the Philippines
Where my roots are. Where my nursing journey began.
❤️ What I love:
My family is here. I don’t want to miss birthdays, random dinners, or the little things like hearing my lola's kwento over tablea.
I understand the people. The way we comfort patients, the way we joke even when things are hard — it's so Filipino, and I love that.
I get to serve my own. There’s something powerful about helping your own kababayan, especially in rural communities or underfunded hospitals.
💔 But it’s also tough:
Let’s be real — the salary is heartbreaking. Some nurses here are overworked and underpaid, and that’s painful to witness.
The workload can break you. One nurse handling 15 or more patients? That’s not safe — for anyone.
There’s burnout. I’ve seen it in the eyes of hospital staff. Sometimes, they’re just surviving, not thriving.
✈️ Going Abroad
Where opportunities call. Where dreams feel bigger.
🌍 What excites me:
The pay is life-changing. Let’s not pretend it’s not a huge reason — being able to support family, save, and actually breathe financially.
Better working conditions. In many countries, nurses are respected and given proper ratios, breaks, and benefits.
Growth. I can specialize, study more, travel, and grow into the kind of nurse I’ve always imagined.
New experiences. I want to see the world — not just as a tourist, but as a nurse who learns from different cultures.
😔 But it’s not easy either:
I’ll be far. I know I’ll miss home. The food, the language, the warmth. Sometimes, even just the noise.
It’s a long process. Exams, papers, visas — it can be overwhelming and expensive.
Not every story abroad is happy. Some nurses end up isolated, overworked, or even exploited. It’s not all sunshine.
💭 My Thoughts (For Now)
Honestly? I want both. I want to serve my country, but I also want to explore and grow. Maybe I’ll start here and build a foundation. Maybe someday, I’ll take a leap and work abroad not because I’m giving up on the Philippines, but because I want to become more, then come back and give more.
I think what matters most is this:
Wherever I am, I want to be a nurse who makes a difference. Whether that’s in a barangay in Davao, a hospital in Germany, or a pediatric ward in Canada, I want to carry the same heart.
🩺 Final Words
To all fellow student nurses reading this — it’s okay not to have it all figured out. Whether you stay or go, you are still worthy, still capable, and still needed. And wherever we end up, may we never forget why we chose this path.
How about you? What’s your dream — to stay, to go, or maybe both? 💬

can i ask how did you get to move to europe? my girlfriend is from asia and wants to move to europe where i live but i have no idea of how it works. like where does she need to go, how long does it take, do we need to be married etc. it just seems like a lot of work... i know it's different from country to country but i was just wondering i guess
i can tell u my own experience! so it absolutely does depend on the country, some countries in europe are much more difficult to immigrate to than others. i came to germany with a "study preparation" visa, meaning i had to get a conditional acceptance at a german uni under the condition that i either complete some sort of training or language course. in my case, it was for learning german. this gave me 2 whole years to learn the language but i completed learning german within 1 year and got the language certificate. the second year i used to do some internships and apply for universities. after that, i had to accept a uni & pay the fees (in german public unis its maximum like 300 euros per semester, so its affordable compared to unis elsewhere) & bc of the type of visa i had, i extended my residence permit for my studies and after i finish that im hopefully going to do the psychotherapy training whichll be another 3 years meaning id have to extend my residence permit again. in germany peope who studied at a german uni require less time to get citizenship also (given that you already speak german at at least a .. i think B2 level?), so its pretty open to certain forms of immigration legally speaking. theres also a job-seeking visa for ppl in specific situations here i think but im not too familiar with that
on the other hand, some countries are extremely difficult to immigrate to but the easiest/quickest route is probably also to study there anyways which isnt an option for everyone. like switzerland for example is to my knowledge extremely difficult for anyone to actually immigrate to, but im sure there's certain cases where its more possible. so it really depends honestly.
in terms of how long it takes: in germany on avg i think ur supposed to wait like 3-4 months to get a long-term visa to stay in germany legally? but in my case they were probs being racist lol so it ended up taking longer and i had to ask a lawyer to help bc they were discriminating against me.
where do you need to go: im not sure if ur asking for country suggestions, but it depends. if she wants to study somewhere then honestly id recommend germany bc of the affordable education but it totally depends on what shes looking for her and her own criteria.
#overall i do not recommend the UK. only convenience is the language but its falling apart over there#plus they make it extremely difficult to immigrate there and their education is extremely overpriced

Introduction: The 2025 Global Education Rush
Studying abroad in 2025 is more than just a dream—it's a strategic investment in your future. With international universities becoming more competitive and visa rules constantly evolving, many students face challenges when navigating this journey alone. This is where a study abroad consultant becomes not just helpful—but essential.
Why 2025 Demands Expert Guidance
The global education landscape is rapidly shifting due to post-pandemic recovery, new government regulations, and changing career trends. A single mistake in your application, choice of university, or visa documentation can cost you time, money, and opportunity.
Here’s what makes study abroad consultants crucial in 2025:
Policy complexity: Countries like Canada, Australia, and the UK have updated visa, financial, and post-study work rules.
Increased competition: More Indian students are applying abroad, but fewer are getting approvals.
Time-sensitive intakes: Missing deadlines can push your dreams by six months or more.
What Does a Study Abroad Consultant Actually Do?
A qualified study abroad consultant offers personalized support at every step:
University Shortlisting: Based on your academic background, goals, and budget.
Course Selection: Tailored to job prospects and country-specific demand (e.g., Data Science in the US, Nursing in Australia).
Application Assistance: SOP drafting, LOR guidance, resume support.
Visa Documentation: Ensuring your financials, forms, and interviews meet immigration standards.
Pre-departure Prep: Housing, insurance, forex tips, and cultural orientation.
Real-World Example: Fast-Tracking Australia Intake
For instance, many students discovered late that Australia offers a September intake at vocational institutions. A knowledgeable study abroad consultant can help you:
Identify lesser-known intakes
Secure quick admissions in fast-track diplomas
Get faster visa processing due to lower applicant traffic
This kind of insider knowledge can only come from hands-on experience, not a Google search.
Why Indian Students Are Increasingly Turning to Consultants
A recent report by the Ministry of External Affairs showed that over 1.3 million Indian students studied abroad in 2024. That number is expected to rise in 2025.

The Fake Spaniard: Samuel Skornicki
His name was Santos Montero
Samuel Skornicki was a Jewish lawyer from Poland who became legal advisor to the Spanish Consul and saved hundreds of Jews and non-Jews from the Nazis.
Samuel was born in Poland in1899 to a family of secular intellectuals. He married Raizel Sliwinsky from Lodz, and they moved to Paris in 1923, where Samuel studied law and became a civil attorney. Their daughter Arlette later remembered, “My father wanted to live in France, the land of freedom and human rights.”
After the Germans occupied Paris in 1940, the Skornicki family moved to Toulouse. As the situation became more dangerous for Jews in France, Samuel and Raizel left Arnette with a Christian family where she would be safe.
Samuel had something everybody wanted – a valid passport and a visa to the United States, where his mother and siblings lived. Instead, Samuel chose to remain in France and help the resistance movement. In Toulouse, Samuel ran a textile factory and distributed anti-Nazi pamphlets and provided Jews with false documents. A master networker, Samuel made connections with important people in Toulouse.
He met with the Spanish Consul, who was overwhelmed with the amount of visa requests from Jews trying to leave France. With legal training and organizational skills, Samuel was well-positioned to help the Consul, and he was appointed legal advisor to the embassy in St. Etienne. Samuel and Raizel were given new identities as Spanish citizens: Santos and Rosa Montero. Neither one of them spoke any Spanish.
In 1942, the Consul returned to Spain and appointed Samuel/Santos as his replacement. Before leaving France, the Consul threw a lavish farewell party where the guests included top officials of the collaborationist Vichy Regime, German Army officers, and off-duty Gestapo storm troopers. The event featured an official swearing-in ceremony where “Santos Montero” was installed as acting Spanish Consul. The Nazis present didn’t realize they were celebrating the promotion of a Jew.
As the acting Consul, Samuel turned the Consulate into a center of the Resistance. He supervised the forging of documents and hiding of weapons, and provided refuge for Jews and members of the Resistance. Meanwhile, he was conducting diplomatic meetings with local Nazi officials, including Gestapo officers with lists of Jews scheduled for deportation on their desks. Samuel read the names upside down and memorized them so he could warn the people on the list.
Since Samuel didn’t speak Spanish, he relied on the Spanish Consulate staff to keep his secret. They were mostly Republican opponents of Spain’s ruler, the fascist Francisco Franco, who was allied with Hitler. As part of that alliance, Franco was sending thousands of Spanish citizens to Germany to provide labor. Samuel and his staff got exemptions for thousands of Spaniards.
In March 1944, the French Resistance attacked a German train near St. Etienne. Determined to catch the French perpetrators, German policemen conducted a house-to-house search. They reached the Spanish Consulate, and before they could even knock on the door Samuel burst out angrily and kicked a German police sergeant! He shouted at them, “Get out of here! I am the Spanish Consul!” The policemen were embarrassed and quickly left. That night, the German Police Chief of St. Etienne visited the Spanish Consulate to apologize in person, and to give Samuel a gun for protection against the dangerous Resistance. Samuel gave the gun to the fighters who’d attacked the train – and were hiding in his cellar!
France was liberated in 1944, and the Skornickis returned to Paris. Since he’d hosted Nazis at the Spanish Consulate, Samuel was suspected of being a collaborator, but people he’d saved wrote letters of thanks proving that he’d been a hero rather than a villain. One of the letters, by Itzkin Rubin, who was hidden in the Consulate, read, “How can I express my gratitude, and the gratitude of my family, for all we owe you? You didn’t hesitate to risk your life in order to save ours. Knowing that we were being hunted by the Gestapo and the (French) Militia, you hid us in your home in those pivotal months before the liberation. If we are fortunate enough to live in peace and to be free, it is thanks to your heroic goodness and your courage. At a time when so many of our friends were tormented or died in terrible physical and emotional suffering, while so many children were separated from their parents, I am blessed to be surrounded by my whole family.”
For saving hundreds of lives after boldly taking on a fake identity, we honor Samuel Sknornicki as this week’s Thursday Hero.

What Happens After Graduation? The Unspoken Truths About Post-Study Life Abroad
When students dream of studying abroad, they imagine walking across stunning campuses, making new friends, and earning that dream degree. But what many don’t talk about—until it hits hard—is what really happens once that graduation cap comes off.
Post-study life is where the real story begins. It’s where your international journey shifts from textbooks to resumes, from lecture halls to job interviews.

Let’s explore what most international students wish they had known earlier about the post-graduation phase, so you can plan ahead—not panic later.
1. "You Have Limited Time to Act"
Most countries give you a specific window after graduation to apply for a post-study work visa. Miss it—and your entire stay could be at risk. For example:
In Canada, you must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving final grades.
In Ireland, you have just 6 months to apply for a stay-back visa.
➡️ Lesson? Start planning before you graduate. Don’t wait for the last day to figure things out.
2. "A Job Offer Isn’t Guaranteed"
Many assume that a degree from a top university will magically land them a job. But the truth? You still have to hustle. Employers want more than just academic scores—they want experience, adaptability, and communication skills. And many international students find it hard to compete without proper guidance.
➡️ Lesson? Start building your resume and network while you're still studying. Internships, part-time work, or even volunteering can go a long way.
3. "Location Matters More Than You Think"
Where you study affects what kind of job you’ll get—and how long you can stay. For instance:
Australia gives extra stay-back years if you study in regional areas.
In Germany, graduates from STEM fields are in higher demand and can transition to the EU Blue Card faster.
UK graduates from certain universities may find it easier to shift to a Skilled Worker Visa.
➡️ Lesson? Don’t just look at rankings. Look at where the jobs are, and what the local visa policies support.
4. "PR is Not a Straight Line"
Many students hear, “Do a Master's and get PR”. While this can be true, the path to permanent residency (PR) often depends on the job you land, your salary, your location, and how quickly you transition into full-time work.
➡️ Lesson? Understand your destination’s immigration rules in detail. Your course should align with the country’s in-demand skill list.
5. "You Might Feel Lost—And That’s Okay"
Life after graduation can feel overwhelming. You’re trying to figure out visas, jobs, rent, maybe even finances—all on your own. It's a phase filled with uncertainty, and that’s normal. Many students go through it, but few talk about it.
➡️ Lesson? Seek help early—career centers, alumni, support groups, and expert consultants like ACHIVIA can guide you through.
Let ACHIVIA Guide You the Whole Way
At ACHIVIA, we believe your success doesn’t stop at graduation. We help you:
Choose the right country and course based on long-term goals.

In recent years, studying abroad has become an increasingly popular choice among Indian students. With access to world-class universities, global exposure, and the promise of better career opportunities, international education offers a pathway to both personal and professional growth. However, navigating the process of applying to foreign universities can be challenging. This is where overseas study consultants in Thane come into play.
Located in the bustling metropolitan region of Mumbai, Thane has emerged as a hub for students looking to pursue education abroad. Let’s take a closer look at what these consultants do, why they are important, and how to choose the right one for your academic journey.
What Do Overseas Study Consultants in Thane Do?
Overseas study consultants act as facilitators for students aspiring to study in foreign universities. They provide assistance at every stage of the application process—from selecting a suitable course and institution to preparing the necessary documents and applying for a student visa.
Here are some of the key services typically offered:
Career Counseling Consultants help students identify their strengths, interests, and academic goals. Based on this, they recommend courses and universities that align with the student’s profile.
University Selection With in-depth knowledge of universities across the globe, consultants can provide a curated list of institutions that best match the student’s preferences and academic background.
Application Assistance They assist in preparing and reviewing application forms, statements of purpose (SOPs), letters of recommendation (LORs), and resumes.
Test Preparation Many overseas study consultants in Thane also offer coaching for standardized tests like IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, and SAT.
Visa Guidance Applying for a student visa can be a complex process. Consultants guide students through documentation, interview preparation, and submission procedures.
Pre-departure Support From accommodation tips to cultural orientation, some consultants also help students get ready for life abroad.
Why Choose Overseas Study Consultants in Thane?
Thane is home to a growing number of qualified and experienced consultants who are familiar with the requirements of students in the region. Here’s why choosing a local consultant can be beneficial:
1. Accessibility
Being located in Thane, students can easily visit the offices for face-to-face consultations, attend counseling sessions, or join workshops.
2. Local Insights
Consultants in Thane often have deep insights into the aspirations, academic trends, and challenges faced by students from the area.
3. Updated Knowledge
Experienced consultants stay informed about changes in university policies, visa regulations, scholarship opportunities, and course structures.
4. Personalized Services
Most overseas study consultants in Thane offer personalized support, tailoring their advice to the student’s academic background, financial capacity, and career goals.
Top Destinations Covered by Consultants in Thane
Overseas study consultants in Thane generally assist students in applying to a wide range of popular education destinations. These include:
United States (USA) – Known for top-ranking universities and diverse programs.
United Kingdom (UK) – Offers globally recognized degrees with shorter course durations.
Canada – Known for quality education and post-study work opportunities.
Australia – Preferred for its friendly visa policies and reputable institutions.
Germany – Offers low or no tuition fees in public universities and is ideal for technical courses.
New Zealand, Ireland, Singapore, and others – Emerging destinations for high-quality, affordable education.
Tips for Choosing the Right Overseas Study Consultant in Thane
Not all consultants offer the same level of service. Here are some tips to help you make an informed choice:
1. Check Credentials and Reviews
Look for consultants with verified certifications, affiliations, and positive reviews from past clients.
2. Experience and Expertise
Opt for consultants who have experience dealing with universities in your target country.
3. Transparent Process
Ensure they provide a clear breakdown of services, timelines, and fees without hidden costs.
4. Customized Approach
Avoid one-size-fits-all packages. A good consultant should offer personalized advice based on your profile.
5. Test Preparation Support
If you’re preparing for exams like IELTS or GRE, it’s helpful to choose a consultant who also offers coaching or partners with coaching centers.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
While working with overseas study consultants in Thane can be highly beneficial, it’s important to stay involved in the process. Here are a few mistakes students should avoid:
Relying completely on the consultant – Always do your own research.
Not verifying university or course details – Make sure the programs suggested align with your goals.
Ignoring visa requirements – Understand the visa process well in advance.
Delaying application preparation – Many universities have early deadlines or rolling admissions.
The Growing Importance of Overseas Education
With globalization, cross-border education is no longer a luxury but an accessible opportunity for many Indian students. According to reports, over 1.5 million Indian students are currently enrolled in international institutions, a number that is expected to grow each year.
The demand for overseas study consultants in Thane reflects this trend, as students and parents seek professional support to make informed choices. Whether you're aiming for Ivy League universities, technical institutions in Germany, or research programs in Australia, expert guidance can increase your chances of success.
Conclusion
Pursuing education abroad is a significant step that involves academic, financial, and emotional investment. Navigating the process alone can be overwhelming. That’s why overseas study consultants in Thane serve a vital role in helping students fulfill their dreams of studying overseas.
From selecting the right course and university to preparing for entrance tests and applying for visas, these consultants offer comprehensive support. By choosing a reliable and experienced consultant in Thane, you can simplify the process and focus on building your future with confidence.
