Max Verstappen has his eyes on the prize at F1 Melbourne with new LVMH partnership

He is the pre-eminent driver of his generation, already considered an all-time great by many. We meet the father-to-be ahead of Formula One powering into Melbourne next week.

A billion pounds is a lot of money in anyone’s language – indeed it’s nudging two billion in ours – and yet that’s how much is reportedly being dangled in front of Formula One driver, and four-time world champion, Max Verstappen, like a particularly shiny and tempting carrot.

But how can he be worth that much, I hear you splutter? Sure, you can’t manage a 160km/h baseball pitch, or nail most of your shots from behind the three-point arc in the NBA, but most of us can drive a car. He’s just got to sit there, right? One steering wheel, two pedals, and $2 billion?

Here’s the thing, you quite simply could not physically drive a Formula One car, let alone race one. It’s not just the speed – hitting 200km/h from a standing start in four seconds before maxing out at 375km/h – it’s the physical punishment.

To drive his Oracle Red Bull race car, Verstappen has to literally lie down, as if he’s in a particularly fast bathtub, with the pedals where the taps would be. While the G-forces, which can exceed six times gravity under braking, apply brutal pressure to his whole body, during long corners his head is out there in the rushing air, pulling five Gs, which means it effectively weighs approximately 25 kilograms, or the same as an eight-year-old boy.

This is why Formula One drivers have necks like sequoia trunks. When Lewis Hamilton started racing he had a 14-inch collar; it’s now 18 inches.

That notional bath that Verstappen is in is also full of very hot water, because his carbon-fibre sarcophagus can reach 50°C (at one scorching event in Qatar in 2023, drivers reported vomiting in their helmets from the heat) and during the course of the race he can lose as much as five per cent of his body weight in fluids. That loss also affects mental function, according to Formula One experts, with each kilogram you sweat costing you, temporarily, as much as 10 per cent of your brain power.

Which brings us to that steering wheel, which is not only covered in two dozen buttons also but features dials that allow the drivers to shift the brake balance in and out of the corners they are approaching at more than 300km/hour.

Verstappen, 27, describes it as being, “Like a rollercoaster that shoots off, but faster than you think, whilst having a steering wheel in your hands with all the buttons,” before mentioning that “the weather conditions massively affect driving the car”. His vehicle has more than 1000 horsepower, but no traction control at all other than his right foot, so in the rain it’s like strapping a whirring chainsaw to each boot and attempting to ice skate.

“Of course, it would be nice if the weather was always good, but that is what makes F1 exciting and fun as a driver: to adapt and push to the limits,” he explains following the shoot, captured at The Maybourne Riviera hotel above his home in Monaco. “It can be tough to train for such extreme conditions, especially for a race like Qatar a few years ago, but it is definitely something you try to get used to.”

I was once unfortunate enough to be a passenger in a Formula One car for a few laps of the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, where this year’s season will kick off with the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix 2025 from March 13 to 16 (and where Verstappen became the youngest F1 debutant ever, aged 17, at his first race in 2015).

The G-forces in the middle of a long corner felt like I was being hit hard, sideways, by an angry rhinoceros and I seriously thought about taking my finger off the Dead Man’s Button they make you hold; because if you pass out you will let go and that will notify the driver to slow down. Staying conscious is tough; thinking about actual racing and tactics on top of that sounds impossible. I was unwell for hours afterwards.

Verstappen’s job, then, is not easy, but he’s already been well compensated for risking life and limb, with an estimated net worth north of $300 million. Last year he bought himself a $22 million superyacht, and he recently added a new $80 million private jet to his collection of toys.

Fortunately, he doesn’t have to buy his own watches, courtesy of being a friend of TAG Heuer, adding that he wears his statement timepiece, a TAG Heuer Monaco, “both on and away from track”.

“It is customised with my name and has the years of my first three championships engraved, which is extra special. They are engraving the fourth at the moment,” adds Verstappen who is expecting a child with his partner, Brazilian model Kelly Piquet.

Antoine Pin, chief executive of TAG Heuer, recognises the synergies between driver and brand, but also what it takes to achieve a champion’s mindset such as Verstappen’s.

“[TAG Heuer] has been with Formula One for almost 60 years now … because from the very beginning, Jack Heuer [the last member of the brand’s founding Swiss family to manage the manufacture] realised this intensity. These Formula One drivers, they are the knights of modern times in a way. They’re going for fight, they’re going in duels, they’re ready to face death.”

And so, we come to what makes Verstappen so special that a rival team, Aston Martin, is reportedly negotiating a $2 billion deal to lure him away from Oracle Red Bull for the 2026 season. It sounds fantastical, except that Aston already poached Red Bull’s brilliant race-car designer Adrian Newey who – alongside charismatic team boss and Mr Ginger Spice, Christian Horner – engineered much of his success and is paying him a rumoured $60 million a year.

Formula One cars are ground-bound fighter jets – they have so much downforce that they could drive upside down on the roof of a tunnel above a certain speed – which means designing them to maximise the flow of air, and thus their speed, is vital. Which is one of the things that will make this year’s season so interesting.

With Newey gone, and thus the chance his Red Bull will not be the fastest car on the grid, will Verstappen be able to maintain the utter dominance that has seen him win the past four Formula One World Drivers’ Championships?

What is undeniable is that he is the driver of his generation, and some would suggest he is already an all-time great, but his seemingly unrelenting will to win has been known to tip over into conflict. In boxing terms, Verstappen is a combination of Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, or to put it in more local parlance, he’s the Tony Lockett of Formula One – fantastically talented, but likely to flatten you if you annoy him.

His fans, which include much of his native Holland, would say he simply hates being overtaken and will go a lot further than most drivers to stop it from happening. In last year’s Mexican Grand Prix he was hit with two penalties after tangling with McLaren driver Lando Norris (the teammate of Aussie hopeful Oscar Piastri, who nine-time Formula One Grand Prix winner Mark Webber describes as our best chance in decades of being a world champion).

Norris went so far as to call Verstappen “dangerous” after the race, former world champion Damon Hill accused him of driving like Dick Dastardly from Wacky Races, and respected commentator Martin Brundle also lashed out.

“I know that Max doesn’t care what anybody thinks, but it saddens me when he drives like that,” Brundle said. “He’s a multiple champion, has more driving talent in his little finger than most of us ever had, but his legacy will be tainted by this sporting attitude, and that’s a shame.”

A few races later, Verstappen reportedly had a fiery encounter out of the car with another rival, Mercedes driver George Russell, who said the champion threatened to deliberately crash into him and to “put me on my f***ing head in the wall”. Verstappen’s response to the ensuing media firestorm was to tell Dutch television that Russell could “get lost” and that “I meant everything I said”.

Despite this, Norris has previously described Verstappen – often seen sharing private jets between races with other drivers – as a good friend.

“Of course, at times it can get a bit tense on track but off the track, that shouldn’t matter at the end of the day,” Verstappen explains. “I have good relationships with the drivers on the grid. We always try to do the best we can on track to get the best possible result, but the main thing is that we can talk about it afterwards.”

If you want to win in Formula One, you need the best – and perhaps the most ruthless – driver. And clearly Aston Martin wants to win, but $2 billion still sounds like a lot until you consider the global financial clout of the sport. Formula One received a huge boost from the success of brilliant Netflix series, Drive to Survive, which turned each season since 2019 into a highly watchable sporting soap opera (Verstappen refuses to take part in the show directly, and won’t answer questions about it).

The ratings hit has driven the popularity of F1 in the US – which had previously been the one global holdout – through the roof and led to the adding of two new American races, in Miami and Las Vegas, to the circuit. It also drove an increase in income from the many acres of advertising splashed all over the cars and the drivers. As of this year, the Formula One Group has a market cap of $39.6 billion, an impressive rise from when the sport was bought by Liberty Media in 2014 for $7.3 billion.

With new drivers on the grid this year, including Australian Jack Doohan, the son of motorcycling legend Mick, and New Zealand’s Liam Lawson, there will be thrills and spills aplenty. But one driver remains the hot favourite and the hot-headed man to beat. Put your billions on Max Verstappen.

Last Friday’s Onyx Pathcast started out normally, but then exploded into a frenzy of creative ideas and after the dust settled (or the verbal equivalent) Dixie, Matthew, and Eddy had brain-stormed six new games!

Their titles are:

You really have to listen to get the actual details of these games, and the wacky yet very typical way that they were conceptualized by the Trio, but even the titles give you some idea of the range of genres and approaches they played around with.

While I was listening – like I do every week, Matthew – it struck me that while the gang were riffing pretty wildly, the process is really very typical for a lot of our creative meetings. For years we’ve tried to use the rules of Improv in our game brainstorming. Like, don’t negate what the last person threw out to the group, try and build upon it.

The old “Yes, and…” rather than “No”.

There’s more than enough time to apply critical or realistic thinking to the ideas, first you need to let the ideas pour out.

(And this is actually not easy to do! A lot of our Onyx Path crew are extremely realistic about the challenges inherent to creating projects, and have very strong opinions and likes and dislikes (hard to believe, I know), so holding those comments back can run against our very natures.)

But as you can tell with this Pathcast, or with my riffing with Matthew half a year ago in the UK GamesExpo edition of the Pathcast where we combined Transformers, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Scion, there’s something innately and deeply fun and satisfying to just letting loose with our imaginations!

Which is, I think, the single greatest part of the TTRPG hobby, and why so many of us love it so much. And, in our case at Onyx Path, why we are so excited to create:

INTERMITTENT FASTING FOR FAT LOSS

Just as the ketogenic diet is increasing in popularity, so is intermittent fasting. Many more people are looking at alternative eating habits to find unique ways of eating that will be most effective for their weight loss journey and their situation.

Intermittent Fasting (IF) iѕ thе асt of gоing withоut fооd оr оthеr caloric intаkе for a реriоd of timе, typically 16-24 hоurѕ, but it can be much shorter or longer. During thiѕ time, your bоdу is unаblе tо dеrivе еnеrgу frоm incoming fооd and must instead turn to its ѕtоrеd energy (carbohydrates in thе fоrm оf glусоgеn, аminо асidѕ, and stored body fat) tо maintain bоdilу funсtiоnѕ. Thiѕ is imроrtаnt as it givеѕ thе bоdу timе tо fосuѕ on rераir аnd еnеrgу preservation by taking a break from the intеnѕivе digestive process.

Thеrе are a few vеrѕiоnѕ of Intеrmittеnt Fаѕting that people subscribe to depending on what works best for them. While уоu can dеrivе thе bеnеfitѕ оf fаѕting frоm any of these mеthоds, a littlе experimentation will ѕhоw уоu immediately which is уоur рrеfеrrеd method. I’ll address the most common applications, including the version I used most and have had the best success with recently. 

Types of Intermittent Fasting

One of the most well know and commonly practices versions of IF is the 16/8 or compressed window version. This vеrѕiоn approaches the dау’ѕ meals frоm a hunter-gatherer perspective. Thе huntеr-gаthеrеr реrѕресtivе, a lеnѕ thrоugh whiсh аll humаn еndеаvоrѕ ѕhоuld bе viewed givеn оur еvоlutiоnаrу history, is that during thе dау, оur аnсеѕtоrѕ wоuld hаvе bееn оut аnd аbоut, finding fооd, with most еаting occurring in the evening. Bу fitting all of thе dау’ѕ саlоriеѕ intо a 4-6 hоur windоw, rather thаn ѕрrеаding thеm over thе соurѕе оf 14-16 hоurѕ аѕ most реорlе dо, thе dау is frееd uр fоr оthеr асtivitiеѕ. 

Another common method of IF is alternate dау fаѕting, whеrеbу уоu fаѕt for 24 hоurѕ, thеn eat for 24 hоurѕ iѕ the first method. You саn implement this fоrm оf IF in various wауѕ. Fоr еxаmрlе, you саn еаt until 6рm, thеn nоt eat аgаin until thе next dау аt 6pm. By dоing ѕо, you still get tо еаt еvеrуdау, but you have a 24-hour реriоd fоr the bоdу tо relax аnd nоt dеаl with digestion.

Many others who subscribe to a fasting regimen will implement what is called the overnight or 12 hour fast. This is where the individual will eat up until a particular time of night, such as 7pm or 8pm and will then fast for 12 hours over night until 7am or 8am the next morning. 

The next extremely popular version of fasting is referred to as the 5:2 method. In this method you can eat normally for five days out of the week and then the other two days you must limit your caloric intake to a quarter of what you would normally eat, approximately 500 or 600 calories on those days. It doesn’t matter which two days or whether or not they’re done in succession. 

Just like the 5:2 method, with the 24 hour method you can eat normally for 6 days of the week and then restrict yourself to no caloric intake for that last day. That being said it is not necessary for that 24 hour fast to occur entirely in one day, it could occur over the course of two days. 

The last method I’ll discuss and the one I personally subscribe to is known as the Warrior fasting method. This method is very similar to the compressed window method where you fast for a 20 hour period where you may consume small amounts of dairy, hard-boiled eggs, raw fruits and vegetables and water or other non-caloric liquids to stay hydrated. Then during the 4 hour period you can essentially eat whatever you want during that time. 

By еxреrimеnting with several versions, I have found that the Warrior method fits with my lifestyle and allows me the most flexibility of all the other methods. My typical day starts off with coffee and half & half around 7am. Then by 9:30am I consume my first ketone shake. I’ll drink water or other non-caloric liquids until approximately 1pm when I have my second ketone shake of the day. If I’m feeling hungry later in the afternoon around 3 or 3:30pm I’ll have a handful of almonds to tide me over. At this point the day I’ve consumed less than 500 calories and under 10 carbohydrates.

I then have one large meal for dinner between 6pm and 7pm. This meal typically consists of protein and veggies. I’ll consume approximately 1000 calories, high protein and less 30 carbs to ensure I’m under 40 for the day. I know this is higher than what most people say you need to be under if you’re doing keto, but as I always say, its all relative. Many people can have 40 or 50 carbs in a day and remain in ketosis, others can’t go above the prescribed 25 without being knocked out of ketosis. It’s up to you to experiment and figure out what your body can handle while still reaping the benefits of ketosis.

There are numеrоuѕ bеnеfitѕ of fаѕting that I have experienced, аnd that many оthеrѕ rероrt are:

Weight and body fat loss

Improved fat burning/muscle maintenance

Lowered blood insulin & sugar levels

Reverse type 2 diabetes

Increased growth hormone

Lowered blood cholesterol

Autophagy

Reduced inflammation

Where does Keto fit in?

As alternative eating methods are becoming more and more popular and experimentation increases it is easy to see how the ketogenic and intermittent fasting go hand in hand. First, intermittent fasting is an excellent way to quickly deplete your glycogen stores, which is the required first step in moving your body into a state of burning fat as its primary fuel source known as ketosis. As long as the body has available glycogen it will not begin burning fat for fuel. Fasting deprives the body of new macronutrients so it immediately burns through glycogen stores before moving on to stored body fat. Second, fat takes the body much longer to burn through than the other macronutrients, carbohydrates and protein. This is the perfect scenario when you are going without food for 12+ hours at a time to ensure you keep yourself satiated.

About: Your best friend Jisoo Kim auditions for YG Entertainment. Once she makes it she never messages you again. Your dream in life is also to become a singer and you try to achieve it by using YouTube and uploading covers. You forget how much you miss Jisoo until you see her at an awards ceremony. When you reconnect at the awards, you meet Lisa. (You’re gay in this story)

Jisoo and Y/N lay on Y/N’s talking about their dreams. Both girls, ever since they were young, have wanted to become singers. Jisoo wanted to be a famous pop singer whereas Y/N wanted to write her own songs with her guitar and tour the world.

“My YouTube channel has 1000 subscribers now and the cover of Loser by BIGBANG has gotten nearly 300,000 views. It’s insane.” Y/N said, scrolling through her YouTube on her phone.

“That’s crazy” Jisoo said, laying next to her, watching what she was doing.

When Jisoo and Y/N were young children, they would sing their hearts out on a beaten up kareoke box Jisoo had been given as a birthday present from Y/N. It didn’t sound the best but it provided them with years of entertainment.

“Y/N! Y/N!” Jisoo yelled, running through the school corridor to reach her best friend.

“Look! This morning I saw on YG’s website that they’re holding auditions in Korea in two months. I signed up instantly and I’m waiting on a reply now. I’m scared! It’s YG! Record company of BIG BANG!” Jisoo said, very quickly as she was so excited.

“Jisoo that’s so great!” Y/N squealed with her best friend. “What do you need to do?” Y/N asked. “I’m not sure yet. They’re going to email me soon. They’re holding 1000 auditions so hopefully I’ll be in time.” Jisoo said, nervous already.

That lunch time, Y/N and Jisoo found an empty classroom to brainstorm. “YG emailed me duing third period. Here it is.” Jisoo turned her laptop screen toward Y/N so she could read.

‘Dear Kim Jisoo,

Thank you for your application. We are delighted to inform you that you have an audition at the YG Entertainment Building on the 26th September. To the audition please be prepared with a dance to any song you like, an original song and you’ll be asked to sing a section of a song you won’t have prepared for. We look forward to seeing you.’

Y/N squealed excitedly before getting in her musical zone. “You can help me write the original song because you’re so good at it! Please Y/N?” Jisoo asked hopefully. “Of course I’ll help you. What kind of song do you want it to be?” Y/N asked, getting out her pen and notebook out of her bag to take down ideas. “I was thinking of a love song, with a twist to make it indivial. I want it to show off my vocals.” Jisoo said, thinking intently. Y/N wrote it down quickly as the bell rang for their next and final class of the day. “I’ll think tonight and I’ll let you know what I have tomorrow and we can adapt and add. See ya!” Y/N said before disappearing down the corridor to her next lesson.

That evening, Y/N sat at her computer with her microphone set up, ready to sing if creativity struck. She had scribbled down many words and chord patterns but she was yet to find one she was satisfied with. Y/N nor Jisoo had any experience in love so she was trying to be poetic but she felt it was becoming too cringe, which she didn’t want for Jisoo. Suddenly, a bright idea popped into Y/N’s head and her pen was flying. Words and notes were being written down so fast, the pen wasn’t far from breaking. Y/N began to record what was in her head with her guitar and her own singing voice. ‘I think I have something. Come over if you can’ Y/N text Jisoo, hoping she would come despite it being 11pm. In ten minutes, there was a knock on the door and Jisoo stood there impatiently. Both girls hurried upstairs and Y/N made Jisoo sit and listen to the recording.

“This is incredible Y/N.” Jisoo said, placing the headphones on the table. “We can change it to however you want as it’s only the first demo.” Y/N said, happy with her work for once. “No, no. I want to sing it exactly like this. It’s perfect. The lyrics aren’t too cliche and it’s melodic too. You’re a genius.” Jisoo said. Y/N and Jisoo switched some lyrics around and changed the end but after that, Jisoo was so excited to record she couldn’t wait the next day so at 1am on a very early Saturday morning, Y/N’s room was filled with Jisoo’s honey-like voice.

The sun had risen and it was 7am, but Jisoo and Y/N finally found the perfect take. They were both tired and once they had finished, instantly they laid down and fell asleep.

The next two months went extremely fast. Jisoo sang their song everyday to make sure it was engrained in her head. She had the song on a disc and she had an instrumental version that she could sing along too as she doubted Y/N could come with her to the audition just to play guitar. Jisoo had gotten advice from their schools dance teacher and perfected her dance to a song she loved. The audition day arrived and Y/N was getting ready with Jisoo before she would drive her to audition.

“Don’t wait outside, because I don’t know how long I’ll be or what happens after it. Thank you so much for everything you have done these past two months. With the song and everything too. I can’t believe I’m lucky enough to have someone like you.” Jisoo hugged Y/N before walking into the large glass doors of YG. Y/N felt emotional, and terrified, for Jisoo.

Y/N didn’t hear anything from Jisoo that evening, or the next day, or the next day. She was confused because she had no idea why Jisoo was ignoring her, or where she was. Their friends from school hadn’t heard from her either and Jisoo’s parents refused to answer any of Y/N’s questions. She was lost.

time jump: 2 years later

It had been 2 years since Y/N had last heard from Jisoo. She tried not to think about it too much but it still hurt her. Y/N graduated school, and was spotted by someone from a different record company. She took the deal and started to work on her professional singing and guitar playing. Her dream was finally coming true but her best friend wasn’t there to share it with her.

In the past two years, Y/N had changed a lot. She had finally come to terms with her sexuality and she dressed differently. She acted the same, humble and caring, but she became more confident. Y/N was very happy that her dream was finally beginning to come true, especially as she walked onto a stage where she was about to make her debut as a rising singer.

She gripped the neck of her guitar nervously as a man announced her name. Y/N walked out as confidently as possible and began to play a song she had written long ago, the first original song she ever wrote. Every person at that debut show was going crazy. Phone cameras were out and cheering was heard. Y/N smiled as she had a conversation with the host and gave some simple facts about herself.

When Y/N walked off the stage, she was on a high. Many people approached her and congratulated her as she realised this is what she was born to do.

Jisoo was a trainee at YG Entertainment now. She had met new friends, one being Jennie Kim. She didn’t think about Y/N often, even though she could message her whenever she wanted, she just chose not to because she didn’t want to make Y/N feel bad that she was achieving her dream and Y/N wasn’t. Jisoo felt bad, but it was for the best. At least that’s what she told herself.

“JISOO! We are going to be debuting early! Me, you, Lalisa Manoban and Park Chaeyoung!” Jennie screamed as she ran into their dorm room. Jisoo jumped off her bed and began dancing around with Jennie.

“When?” Jisoo asked.

“5 days from today! We have to begin immediately which is why we have to find Lisa and Chaeyoung. Let’s go!” Jennie dragged Jisoo as they ran through the corridors. Their dreams were starting earlier than they expected!

Jisoo, Lisa, Chaeyoung and Jennie all met in the dance studio where they were immediately thrown into dancing for a song they recorded last week - Whistle. They found the dance hard but at the end of the day they had already completely the first verse.

Y/N was very excited to begin her career. Once people started noticing her, she was busy instantly with promotion of her single and performances on TV shows. She even starred on ‘The Tonight Show’ in the USA, where she announced her first album. She was more than excited to release her first album, but a lot was too be decided. She had to think about the photo book and photo card, the front cover and how she wanted it to sound. Her manager had told her she wouldn’t have long to decide to she sat in a hotel room at a desk, looking through pictures online to give her inspiration. The thought suddenly struck - light and dark. Y/N loved wearing black and it was her favourite shade, and darkness for the photos would be great, and she could have light ones as well. Her songs could be a mixture and she already thought of song ideas that would match. Great!

Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa and Chaeyoung, who had adopted the stage name: Rosé, stood backstage as they were prepared for their debut. One by one, they slowly walked out onto the dark stage as their names were called. They were scared and nervous but they had been waiting for this moment almost their whole lives, and the excitement weighed out any other feeling. “BLACKPINK” was the group name chosen. It felt good to have a name and have people soon saying it, Jisoo thought to herself.

The next month was spent releasing music, for both Y/N and BLACKPINK. Jisoo didn’t pay much attention to the media so she didn’t know about Y/N’s rise to fame, but Y/N knew about Jisoo. She saw her with her members on articles and on social media. Jisoo looked happy. Y/N’s album was released a week prior and it had blown up instantly. It hit #1 in Korea, Japan, Thailand, America and China. Everyone knew who she was, except Jisoo. Jisoo really was in her own world when it came to new music.

The Seoul Music Awards arrived, and Y/N was nominated for many awards, those including the Daesang award, Bonsang award, Record of the year and New artist award. She was against BLACKPINK in two of those, the Daesang award and the New artist award. To say she was nervous would be an understatement. Y/N would be performing in front of many other artists like Red Velvet, BTS, and most importantly, BLACKPINK. BLACKPINK weren’t performing but as Y/N was shown around the large venue, she knew exactly where they would be seated.

Jisoo, Lisa, Jennie and Rosé took their seats at a large table in the hall, where the awards were about to begin. “Who’s performing today?” Jisoo asked Lisa, who had been raving about the performances at the awards over the past few weeks. “BTS, Hyuna, GOT7 and Y/N.” Lisa said, saying Y/N’s name excitedly. “Y/N?” Jisoo asked, her heart dropping. “Yeah, her new album dropped the other month and it’s blown up. We are against her for the Daesang and New artist award. She’s really good, my girl crush.” Lisa said happily. “Do you have a picture of her?” Jisoo asked nervously. “Of course, she’s my home screen actually.” Lisa chuckled embarrassed. She had been obsessing over Y/N ever since her debut and clearly Jisoo hadn’t paid attention. Lisa showed Jisoo the photo on her home screen and Jisoo’s heart beat faster with nerves. Her old best friend was on the screen, smiling at a crowd with a guitar in hand. “What’s wrong unnie?” Lisa asked, locking her phone and placing it on the table. “She’s my old best friend.” Jisoo said. “I stopped talking to her completely, she probably hates me.” Lisa gasped slightly. Their conversation was interrupted by a large booming voice and the host walking out onto stage. Jisoo wasn’t really focusing as she was looking around for Y/N. Just as she turned to her right, she saw her. She sat on a table with Red Velvet and she was laughing about something with Yeri. Y/N looked more mature in her suit, seemingly made by Gucci by the design of it. Jisoo looked back at the stage, scared Y/N would see her.

The awards went fast, and then the first category Y/N was nominated for appeared. Record of the year. Many other amazing albums were nominated, including Red Velvet’s. Y/N joined hands with Yeri and Irene as they all waited, hoping the best for each other but also themselves.

“The winner for record of the year is, Y/N Y/L/N with her debut album.” Y/N stood up and hugged the members of Red Velvet and shook various hands as she walked up to the stage, a huge grin on her face. She took the award graciously, bowing to the host respectively. Y/N gave a small speech before her time ran out and she went and sat back down, placing her award on the table before it was taken away by her manager for safe keeping.

Y/N won the next two awards she was nominated for, the New artist and the Bonsang award. She beat BLACKPINK in the new artist award and saw them sitting here, her eyes settling on Jisoo as they made uncomfortable eye contact. Backstage, Y/N was preparing for her performance. She had changed and her hair had been restyled. Now she was wearing a casual outfit. She had a large shirt tucked into high waisted shorts as it was hot. Simple but Y/N liked it.

“Now, the performance you’ve all been waiting for, Y/N Y/L/N!” The host announced, disappearing from the stage. Y/N began to play her guitar from the side of the stage as the stage was still dark. It lit up slowly as she walked onto the stage with her guitar, singing happily. It was a joyful pop song that showed off Y/N’s vocals as she played her guitar along with the additional backing track. Everyone was going crazy for her as she sang, the hall being filled with people singing wildly. The whole hall erupted in cheer as Y/N ended on a high note. She walked off the stage humbly and went and sat back down, not before passing her guitar to her manager who took it away. The members of Red Velvet congratulated her as she sat down. The whole hall fell silent as they waited for the Daesang, the most prestigious award, to be announced. “This award has many incredible artists nominated, but we can only have one winner. How I Lost My Way as a Travel Writer…

Ever since I emerged from my “writing cave” after working on my first book, I’ve felt a deep void within. The publishing journey was challenging, fulfilling and joyful in equal measures – and consumed so much of me. After the initial excitement of the book launch, my soul started to feel inexplicably restless.

I suppose I did try to satiate it with some epic adventures in Myanmar, Iran, Bhutan and South Africa last year. Then the pandemic hit, and left me no choice but to hang up my travel boots.

A new era of travel blogging

I thought this could be just the pause I needed. I would re-focus my attention on this travel blog that I’ve nurtured over so many years but recently neglected. Unfortunately, travel blogging has changed much over time. It has become much less about experiences, and much more about Google rankings.

Every time I sat down to write about a misadventure in Nicaragua that could’ve been my last, or how solo travel can make or break a relationship, I wondered, would anyone search for this? Does this story have the potential to appear on Google’s first page?

The current state of travel blogging has left me distracted and uninspired.

An ethical dilemma

Even if the story did stand a chance of making it to Google’s first page, I felt conflicted about whether to write about “hidden” places in such a public space. I mean, we’ve all seen the downfall of once-pristine places, especially in the Instagram era.

I shudder to think how a remote high altitude desert like Spiti or the sleepy interiors of Goa have changed in the past few years – with trash, traffic and overtourism adversely impacting local people and biodiversity.

Yet I sorely miss the joy of writing about low-key discoveries on my travels, for a smaller group of readers with a stronger bent towards responsible travel.

Drying up income

When India began to open up a few months ago, I took an ethical stance not to travel or promote travelling during the pandemic. I’m taking a cue from rural communities who’ve chosen to keep their borders closed despite the loss of livelihoods, and the growing discontentment among locals in places where the wearing of masks and social distancing rules are largely ignored by tourists.

With borders closed, all my international collaborations are on hold indefinitely. I’m choosing to say no to domestic airline and hotel collaborations that require me to travel. As a passionate advocate of veganism and sustainability, I continue to say no to lifestyle brands that test on animals or represent fast fashion. And I’ve long taken a stance against filling my blog with annoying ads.

That means in the past few months, except for the odd partnership, all my income has dried up.

The money has dried up but the words are flowing freely (mostly)!

So what now?

Now that I’ve had plenty of time to reflect, I’ve gradually realized that somewhere along the way, I forgot the very reasons why I first pursued travel writing.

I dreamt of bringing stories from the road that had rarely been told before. Stories that inspired unconventional ways of thinking. Stories that offered a glimpse of unfamiliar worlds.

Instead, I’ve been keeping many epic finds, unexpected encounters and life-defining moments on the road, to myself – because they don’t belong on Google, Instagram or any public space.

But I think I’ve finally found a new direction…

I’ve spent the past few months contemplating how I can continue writing about places, people and finds that’ve deeply impacted me – without the risk of subjecting them to irresponsible travel or constantly worrying about search engine and social media algorithms.

I’m excited to move into a largely editorial role on this blog with occasional posts written by me.

I’ll continue to engage with you on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, but perhaps at a reduced frequency than I currently do. I hope Journeys will take away the need to channel an income through constant engagement on social media – and allow me to build deeper connections with long term readers.

At this time of isolation, the world has felt out of reach and nudged me to examine many of my life choices. My attempts at travel writing, as I can see now, took a direction I never anticipated. Yet you’ve stood by me, continued to read my posts here and on Instagram, and sent many heartfelt messages and emails over the years. For that, I’m forever grateful.

As I embark on what feels like a new chapter of my virtual life, I hope to continue taking you to faraway places, both geographically and within. I hope you’ll join me on these “Journeys”. There’ll be no flowing dresses, I promise

Gagne Takes Third Straight With Dominant VIR Victory

Yamaha's Jake Gagne Completes Perfect Weekend In Virginia Three races a championship does not make, but the performance of Fresh N’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha’s Jake Gagne certainly makes sleeping a little rough for those who are racing against him. Gagne won his third straight MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike race on Sunday at VIRginia International Raceway, and he did so in impressive fashion. Again. On Saturday, Gagne won by 11.8 seconds. Today that gap swelled to 13.9 seconds. As he did yesterday, Gagne led into turn one and proceeded to lead every lap thereafter, crossing the finish line well clear of Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York’s Loris Baz, the Frenchman earning his first career MotoAmerica podium. “Today was a little more comfortable for us,” Gagne said. “I think it was a little hotter today. I think the track temp was maybe a little hotter. So, I knew I needed to be a little easier on the tires because yesterday we roasted out here pretty good. After yesterday’s race, we really learned a lot, when you get a whole 20 laps underneath you in race conditions. So, we just made a couple minor tweaks, and the bike just came a lot easier for me to ride today. I was just having fun sliding around out there. It’s nice when you’ve got a little bit of a gap. I was keeping an eye on my pit board. But you can’t let up. These guys, I know they’re going to keep rolling and if you just back off a couple percent that’s when something can happen. So, I just kept riding and having fun. Hats off to the Fresh N’ Lean Attack Performance crew. Even after a great day yesterday, they went back and worked hard last night to get a couple little improvements coming into today. This Yamaha came off the truck good on Friday. We changed the gearing for Atlanta, and she was rolling good. I’m really looking forward to Road America. I think that will be kind of a whole different track than these first two we dealt with, so it will be cool to switch it up a little bit. It’s good to get a win.” Baz’s race was eventful early as he battled with a pack of four for second place, but once he got to the spot, he was able to pull clear and monitor his gap to third place. He knew there was no catching Gagne. In fact, he knew that before the race started based on Gagne’s race pace from Saturday. “I’m enjoying it a lot since three months,” Baz said of his working visit to the U.S. “We’ve been working so hard with the team to do good work. We knew that the test in Austin we were fast, but we knew we were coming to tracks where we struggle a bit more. I was surprised we struggled so much. Race one (at Road Atlanta where he crashed) we were able to win and race two the bike broke. It was hard to swallow that for three weeks. We came here with the same goal as Atlanta, but we just struggled more all weekend. We were so far off on Friday. We didn’t expect to put the bike in the top five. We were so far away. It was so hard to ride. The crew did an amazing job this Friday to improve the electronics and we made a decent qualifying. Unfortunately, we had trouble on the tire. I knew the track was killing the tread. It was a tough race yesterday before and today. I knew that the best we could do with our pace was P2. The target was to try to go behind Jake (Gagne) and follow him. I gave everything that I had and still could not do it. So, it was a lonely race, trying to increase the gap to the guys behind and just manage my tires because I didn’t know what to expect at the end. I was just managing the gap and had a couple of tenths. Just trying to bring it to the end because I was struggling with my rear tire. I’m really happy. I think one of the hardest parts of the Ducati we improved a lot. The target is still exactly the same as when I came. I know these guys are fast and I’m just ready to battle with them.” Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz was roughed up in turn one off the start and finished the opening lap in 14th, but the South African didn’t give up and pushed his way through the pack, eventually making his way to the heels of those battling for third. When all was said and done, Scholtz had worked his to third to maintain his perfect season of podium finishes. “I just saw one of the M4 Suzuki bikes coming up the inside, so I gave him space,” Scholtz said. “I could have followed him, but I don't know what happened from there. I think Cam (Petersen) ran off the track. I’m not sure if he got touched. It’s just one of those unfortunate things. I’m trying to get aggressive in the first corner trying to hang onto Jake (Gagne) because I knew if I could slot in behind Jake, he would pull me and I kind of had the pace over everyone else after about lap eight or 10.” Scholtz’s fourth podium, including his win in race one at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, keeps him in the MotoAmerica Superbike Championship lead with his 81 points, six more than the fast-closing Gagne. Gagne’s Fresh N’ Easy Attack Performance Yamaha teammate Josh Herrin is third with 61 points, the 2013 AMA Superbike Champion finishing off the podium for first time this season on Sunday at VIR. Herrin, meanwhile, managed to hold off the advances of M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Bobby Fong for fourth with the latter bouncing back from mechanical issues that thwarted his progress on Saturday. Kyle Wyman had his strongest race of the 2021 season, the Panera Bread Ducati rider in the fight for second/third early on before slipping back to finish sixth. Fong’s M4 ECSTAR Suzuki teammate Cameron Petersen was some two seconds adrift of Wyman and in seventh after having to fight through from well back after being involved in the melee in turn one. Scheibe Racing’s Hector Barbera was eighth, but he really deserved more. An off-track excursion cost him a shot at the podium as he was fighting for third when he couldn’t get the BMW stopped for turn one in the heat of battle and was forced to take to the grass. Ninth went to HONOS HVMC Racing’s Corey Alexander, the Stock 1000-spec Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted New Yorker ending the race as the top finishing Superbike Cup entry. Franklin Armory/Disrupt/RG Racing/Kawasaki’s Andrew Lee had his best result of the season thus far in 10th, some four seconds adrift of Alexander and only .001 of a second ahead of Travis Wyman Racing’s Travis Wyman. Sean Dylan Kelly Takes Supersport Victory In Opening Round. ECSTAR Suzuki’s Sean Dylan Kelly drew first blood in the 2021 MotoAmerica Supersport Championship with his victory over rival Richie Escalante in the season-opener at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, but in the other support classes it was mostly new blood taking advantage of the class champions exiting stage left. Supersport: Here We Go Again The tight battles at the front of the Supersport field that were an every-race occurrence last year between 2021 Champion Escalante and title runner-up Kelly picked up right where they left off in Supersport race one at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Kelly, who started from the pole aboard his M4 ECSTAR Suzuki, got the holeshot twice in the red-flagged race and held off all but one of Escalante’s attempts to take the lead. The HONOS Kawasaki rider, who ended up having to race his 2020 HONOS Kawasaki after crashing his 2021 green machine in final qualifying, couldn’t match Kelly’s pace. Kelly showed that 2021 may flip the script as his margin over Escalante at the checkers was more than 2.6 seconds. Cycle Gear Racing Yamaha’s Nolan Lamkin survived the attrition that led to the red flag and successfully reached the podium for his best-ever result in Supersport competition. “I’m really happy with how this weekend is going so far,” Kelly said. "This is exactly what I came for. I prepared a lot this off-season – not only me, but also my team. We worked really hard together after a tough 2020 season. I learned a lot last year. I knew this year what I was coming into and I came prepared. I’m really happy with this. We’ve been working really hard since yesterday. We got the pole this morning. I really do think this race was if not the best, one of the best of my career just because of the pace I had. I’m sometimes not known for being able to go by myself and making fast laps with a really good pace like Richie. That was his strongest point last year. This is what we worked for all weekend, just to be able to pull really, really fast, consistent laps all week through the whole race, and that’s exactly what I did. Stock 1000: Gilbert Gets It Done In Saturday’s Stock 1000 race, long-time literbike road racer Michael Gilbert got the victory aboard his brand-new Kawasaki ZX-10R, and he prevailed over hard-charging Jones Honda rider Ashton Yates, who was also aboard a brand-new bike - the Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. Both riders battled hard in the 13-lap event, as did third-place finisher Travis Wyman, who raced his trusty BMW S 1000 RR to a coveted spot on the podium. “It has been a long time since we got a win and honestly, there was a point in December or January where we weren't really sure we were going to be racing,” Gilbert said. “We got a few really key sponsors – Chuckwalla Valley Raceway back in Southern California being one of them, giving us an amazing place to train during the winter with JP43 Training. All the work that we do through the winter and then Octane Lenny came on board right at the last minute and really kind of sealed the deal to put us back in the MotoAmerica paddock and give us a strong package to work with. I’ve got to give it up to my guys, including Jason Aguilar. It’s a bummer to see him not on a Superbike. Twins Cup: De Keyrel And Aprilia Win Coming into the Twins Cup season, the big question was, how would the brand-new Aprilia RS 660 fare in MotoAmerica’s rough-and-tumble “tuner class.” Very well, thank you very much. In Twins Cup race one, the new, twin-cylinder middleweight sportbike swept the podium with Robem Engineering’s Kaleb De Keyrel taking the victory over Righteous Racing’s Jody Barry – who has returned to the MotoAmerica Series after a few years away – and Hayden Schultz, who is one of De Keyrel’s teammates. “It was super fun,” De Keyrel said about the race. “Really good battle for quite a ways through. Overall, I can’t complain. Showing up here never riding the bike before and being right on pace pretty much right off the bat just really proved to myself that I did my homework in the off-season. I did a ton of training at the go-kart track and been riding motocross a ton, making sure that I’m physically fit and ready. I knew we were going to kind of be a little bit under-prepared as far as getting testing in on the bike because we didn’t have enough time. The Aprilia came out so late in the year that we didn’t have a whole lot of time. Really, we’re just lucky to be here. I wouldn’t be here without Matt (Spicer) and Gene (Burcham) and all of (Robem Engineering) putting in so many hours on the bike and working through everything, turning it into a race bike. Just to even be here was a huge feat in itself. I just wanted to leave here with solid points. Obviously, I was involved in the championship hunt last year and I ended up losing, so I’m hungry to prove that I can be a frontrunner and win races. That’s what we did today. Just did the best we could, like we always do. It was a lot of fun.”

Veloce Racing Kawasaki’s David Kohlstaedt finished third, which was the first MotoAmerica podium of his career. “I got the start both times and I passed (polesitter) Gus (Rodio) on the first lap,” Scott said. “From there on I’m like, ‘I’m going to try to pull away.’ Every few laps coming out of turn seven, I would look back and there was always someone there. So, I knew I had to keep pushing and keep being consistent, otherwise they were going to overtake me. In the end, the last lap was a little stressful because I knew if Ben passed me anywhere past the halfway point in the lap, I was probably going to end up second.
