I'll make a short work of this. 'How We Disappeared' A 13 year old Kevin is charged with the mission to find the truth about his family's past. The reason? His dying grandmother tells him a secret she almost carries to the grave. At the end of the spectrum is Wang Di, a survivor of the Japanese occupation of Singapore. If you read enough books or watch dramas, you can predict where this is going. The arc of this story encompasses the plight of comfort girls who were held captive, mistreated (putting it mildly) and later abandoned in the face of defeat. I was slightly impatient with the book for having figured out the plot too early and because I had already read a couple of books dealing with the occupation earlier. But that's on me. Is the book well-written? Yes. The characters? Well-formed. The storyline? Fleshed out. It punches all the right spots. If this is your first read about the atrocities committed during the Japanese occupation of Malaysia, Singapore and the region- trigger warning. If you want more material on the occupation: 1. 🇬🇧 I’m reading How We Disappeared by Jing-Jing Lee even though I know it’ll break my heart. It is about the Japanese occupation in Singapore in WWII. This sentence alone give away a lot, doesn’t it? 😔 There are two timelines in the book and two secrets waiting to be discovered. And to know that it is based partly on the author’s great-greatfather’s experiences is unnerving. A young girl is shipped off to a Japanese military brothel and years later a 12 year-old boy is searching for the truth after his grandmother’s confession right before her death. On Saturday, February 14 please join us for a Twitter chat, and an in-person teach-in at the Yale University. The Twitter chat will start at 11am EST and the teach-in will be at 3pm-5pm at the Native American Cultural Center (26 High Street, New Haven, Connecticut).

Both events will take place as it is the annual day to honor missing and murdered Indigenous women, and they are to coincide with the memorial marches that take place across Canada. We are very honored to continue the conversation and work across the continent, as this type of violence and category of femicide is prevalent across the continent. We will also to continue to discuss all of the levels and forms of erasure Indigenous [and Black, Indigenous] women experience outside of physical acts of violence.
