Stairways in hospitals.  They are the same everywhere.  Hot, muggy and with random locked doors.  It’s a strange constant in an otherwise new beginning. I reach the 5th floor and open it, letting the air conditioning roll over me.  I glance at my list and head towards the room.

I quit bedside nursing.  I tucked into a graduate program in 2019, finished and landed a job.  I left bedside for more reasons than I can count but the main one is a little over 3 feet tall with shiny red hair and deep brown eyes. I told myself for 11 years in the ICU that when I became a mom I would leave bedside nursing.  I don’t regret it. Not even a little.

I now work as a nurse practitioner in a bustling community hospital about 25 minutes from the downtown hospital I spent so many years in. My specialty is something I would have never picked and yet do not regret one day.  I spend my days talking about pancreatitis, cirrhosis and GI bleeds.  I can explain entire procedures that I had never heard of before a year ago.  It’s a strange existence. Both harder and easier than my prior career.

Maybe when my son is older I will find something else. Something that takes me back to the excitement of ICU or cardiac. But I doubt it wholly.  I’m home every weekend and only work 4 days a week.  I’m off by 5:30 and never work nights or holidays. 

I write this from my living room where my almost 3 year old is grinning while bouncing on a ball and showing me a family of dinosaurs. French press coffee is steaming beside me and homemade rolls are cooling on the stove.  It’s a quality of life I never dreamed possible when I first started in nursing, but now it is my reality.

(in TX, you can start the form online but have to mail it in!)⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ time for a politics rant bc I don’t have many other outlets for this stuff since graduating from Georgetown (#hoyasaxa lmao): ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ in the past, I use to say “doesn’t matter who you vote for just make sure you vote bc it’s our duty in a democracy to do what we can to shape our future” BUT that messaging no longer applies. as much as I’m not thrilled about having yet another old white man for president, Biden is the ONLY viable option for building a country where all Americans have the chance to live with justice and dignity. sounds dramatic because it is! any vote that’s not for Biden is a vote for Trump. ⁣ ⁣ if you feel like it sucks to “pick between two evils,” I hear you, and great minds are working on that. check out @representus and their materials on the American Anti-Corruption Act which would help fix our democracy by passing policies like ranked choice voting. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ so why not Trump? simply put, we cannot afford 4 more years of his incompetence—economically, socially, environmentally, etc. he has demonstrated tyrannical tendencies which is hella alarming. he has made over 20,000 FALSE claims, actively hurting our ability to have meaningful discourse over policy. finally—and I can’t believe this has to be said about a US president—as a **legally documented** sexual predator and corrupt business leader, he is blatantly unfit for office.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ meanwhile, Biden is a savvy politician who knows Washington and can get things done. he will restore decency to the White House, he has a robust climate and renewable energy plan, he will defend civil liberties, and he will take public health seriously. most importantly, he will appoint **qualified** people to lead all the executive agencies—which do a lot of work most of us never hear about but affects our everyday lives!⁣⁣⁣ (at San Antonio, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFdVj-tBvxA/?igshid=ht91h79buahg

Former Hoya Williams Set Up Robbery

According to the Washington Post, former Georgetown Hoya wide receiver, Dijon Williams, set up a robbery that led to the murder of  Nurudeen Thomas, 30, of Greenbelt, Md.

Williams has been charged with first-degree murder. He is no longer part of the Georgetown football program.

Have I “Reddit”?  Uh, not until now...

Guess who’s back, back again... Media switch up is back... tell a friend...

For this week’s assignment, I chose Reddit.  Why?  Because it’s insanely popular and the news consumption and and social news aggregation it produces is a bit mind boggling to me. While I do read my news primarily online, it’s a bit more traditional (WSJ, NY Times). It’s in the top 10 of websites in the WORLD for search. Again, taking Professor Heim’s advice, I am selecting a medium on social media I do not use but have limited familiarity of. (in this case, I know it exists LOL).  So again, let’s get learning shall we? 

Since this class is all about data, it’s time we REDDIT... (get it) on REDDIT.

TO THE DATA!! 

Since its launch in 2005, Reddit has grown massively popular with over 430 million active monthly users. Reddit was founded by two 22-year-old graduates from the University of Virginia, Alexis Ohanian (Serena Williams Hubby and Baby Daddy) and Steve Huffman, the latter of whom has served as CEO of the site since 2015.

To those who are not so familiar with Reddit,  (HALLO, that’s me)  it is a network of communities with their own front pages. Users can follow and submit posts to each community as they wish. Reddit is a way to view news, connect with people of similar backgrounds, views, and interests. It works like a newspaper, but with users who are entitled to their own opinions.  This can prove to be the proverbial rabbit hole.  I got trapped in a thread of Hallmark movie lovers.  After an hour of reading about the fictional land of San Senova, I had to get back to reality.  But, I mean, it IS a Christmas Movie!!

FOCUS...Back to the data!

This great article: https://foundationinc.co/lab/reddit-statistics/ that gives an amazing a detailed overview of what users Reddit is attracting. The bulk of their users are 18-29 but the amount of page views is staggering.  I also am fascinated how the content is consumed is too.  Short, non questioned posts get the most engagement, but the average visit is 16 mins.  Speaking from experience, I had myself finding more and more subthreads, and diving deeper. It’s also young males that make up the majority of users, of which I am not, clearly, but that would explain some of what I felt were the less interesting popular threads. There is even a reddit thread on their demographics, called “Data is Beautiful”.  One of the trending posts and not surprisingly, was the Mike Pence Fly. So while there was plenty of discussion about the debate, the fly was the bug in everyone’s ear (or on their heads) 🤣

Do Brands reddit too?

Well known brands like Publix, Walgreens and Starbucks have reddit accounts and interact with their users. Starbucks has 146K followers!  And there are ADS! So it is being monetized as well... #iwillbuyabagelbite

But they also get trolled.  Look at what Reddit user Barista said:

But, also like any social site, it also has its fair share of detractors. An AI bot posted for a week in a very popular forum and was very controversial and NO ONE NOTICED!

 FINAL THOUGHTS:

SO after a week of saying I ‘reddit’, here are my observations:

-Great news aggregator

-Good factual information (for the most part)

- All types of subjects

I however wasn’t spending the 16 minutes consuming news, but rather the depths of the humor, memes, and all around feel good posts.  I will definitely be adding this to my social repertoire as I like how the platform is structured. If anything, these media switch-ups have been invaluable for expanding ones horizons and pushing to learn things outside of your comfort zone.
