I’ve just finished reading Human Rites. Sometimes you finish reading a series and you can go on with life. Sometimes the series is fantastic, and you crave more, but the author has put a definitive cap on the plot and you know it will never continue. So I need a few days to grieve the end of my favourite book series. There are very few series I would recommend more than HMRC by Juno Dawson. If you’re looking for a series to get absorbed by, this is the one.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility 2025!
Children’s Just Like Queen Esther by Ari Moffic and Kerry Olitzky (text) and Rena Yehuda Newman (illustration) Atara loves to wear her crown – to the library, to the dentist, even to her swim lessons. It gives her confidence, and shows the world that she is a girl, not a boy, like everyone thought at first. But when Atara reads the story of Queen Esther, on the Jewish holiday of Purim – she…

the reason this is so funny to me is bc there’s a gay bar in my city called the kremlin and i met this guy there during covid who i was head over heels for, and then he turned out to be straight and used my bank card one night to buy himself and his date 200 quid worth of drinks so in a way, Satan truly did manifest in the kremlin, Juno Dawson.

✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨
Human Rites by Juno Dawson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
QOTD: What was your last five star read? Or one you anticipate will be 5 stars?
[instagram]
Huge thank you to HarperCollins UK and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC. All thoughts are my own.
This is a spoiler free review for both this book and prior books!
THIS WAS AMAZING. Such an incredible finale to this series. I cried a fair bit towards the end just because I knew it was ending lmao.
I love these characters so, so much and everything they do in this book just made me love them even more.
There is SO much going on in this book but it felt so expertly paced. I was never bored, I never felt rushed, nothing felt over or under done.
And honestly, I gotta say, one of the plots in this book felt very Doctor Who. Very River Song. I was lowkey living for it.
Ugh, I am a mess. This series is amazing. Highly recommend.

With her last book, Juno Dawson left us with some truly gnarly cliffhangers. Now, in Human Rites, the conclusion to the Her Majesty’s Royal Coven series, readers won’t be too surprised to hear that there are only more twists coming their way. But they’ll have a ball of a time getting there.
This rollicking fantasy series in which the enemies are in so many ways personified hate and fear, transphobia and misogyny, comes to a close. The daughters of Gaia—Elle, Ciara, Leonie, and, yes, Niamh—must prepare to face Satanis himself. And Theo has to make a choice: succumb to the temptations of Lucifer and fulfill the Sullied Child prophecy or watch everyone she cares about die. I knew I’d enjoy this final volume, because Dawson has reeled me in deeply with all of these characters. And it didn’t disappoint. It’s witty, with some truly wild surprises, and emotional too. I finished it with that big feeling in your chest you get at the end of a well-written story. It all ends up like we sort of thought it would, in a devastating final battle and an attempt to rewrite fate, but I dare any reader to guess how we get there.
So if you’ve loved this series, the finale is out July 1. If you haven’t read it, but are interested in the story of a coven of real-feeling, complex witches, many of them queer, all of them bold, and all connected by a deep childhood bond, battling transphobia, misogyny, and other such nonsense, I highly recommend you try out this wonderful trilogy.
Content warnings for transphobia/misgendering, violence, suicidal ideation.

Queen B Review
Tumblr media
I love Juno Dawson’s writing – all her books I’ve read make me so sad. This Her Majesty’s Royal Coven series prequel about Anne Boleyn is making me even more impatient to be devastated further by Human Rites. Please come and rip my heart out, Juno!
I have somewhat accidentally been on a witch marathon recently and Queen B has reminded me why witch narratives are so great.

Thesis: Dungeon Meshi halflings have tails in fanon because it's fun and interesting <3
Antithesis: Well, actually, according to the world guide, halflings are considered "human" in the region by social standards which require that they have a standardized "human" skeleton; you can't just add tails without fundamentally changing the complex nature of anti-halfling prejudice in their world.
Synthesis: Dungeon Meshi halflings DO have tails and we just don't see this because it's standard practice for halflings to remove them young in areas of the world where bullshit skeleton-based race science is the norm.

and then @cattailhighway coming along and leaving the most harrowing statement in the tags
Tumblr media
I’m still thinking about that “is OSHA regulations Cop Behavior” post. Like. You know who thinks regulations are for losers? People who build submersibles out of logitech gamepads and rejected carbon fibre. People who trust starlink as their only surface lifeline.
Do you wanna be like the fine film on the floor of the Atlantic that was once a billionaire? Is that the hill you’re really gonna die on?
We have an expression in my field- “Regulations Are Written In Blood”
People don’t have fucking safety standards as a power trip, we have them because somewhere in the past, NOT having those regulations killed or maimed someone.
A lot of laws out there are bullshit- safety regulations sure as fuck aren’t. I have the literal scars to prove it.
