The morning arrived like a flash of light, chasing away the remnants of the previous night's calm. The palace was alive with activity, a flurry of preparations for the grand ball and the annual celebration of the Jung Kingdom. Despite her role as an advisor, Hyejin found herself working alongside the royal palace guards, assisting with security plans for the event.
Kyungmin, the young prince, occasionally glanced up from his notebook to steal quick looks at Hyejin and Yunho. His interest was evident, though his maid soon ushered him away to begin preparations for the ball. Unbeknownst to Hyejin and Yunho, Kyungmin’s curious eyes missed little.
Hyejin moved through the grand ballroom, her sharp gaze sweeping over every corner, every potential vulnerability. The room was an opulent expanse, adorned with towering pillars, gilded fixtures, and rows of massive chandeliers. Multiple ladders dotted the space, as decorators busied themselves hanging streamers and tapestries high above the marble floors.
She was inspecting the perimeter when a sharp shout broke her focus.
“Watch out!”
Her head snapped up just in time to see one of the workers stumble atop a ladder. The large tapestry they’d been securing slipped free, plummeting toward her. It was enormous, an intricately woven banner depicting the Jung Kingdom’s crest, and its weight promised to crush anything—or anyone—beneath it.
Hyejin froze, her instincts momentarily paralyzed by the sheer size of the descending tapestry. She had no time to move before a strong arm yanked her backward, pulling her into a firm chest. The air left her lungs as the tapestry thudded to the ground, missing her by mere inches.
The cacophony of hurried footsteps and murmured apologies faded into the background. Her heart pounded fiercely, each beat echoing in her ears. The steady rhythm of another heartbeat matched her own, pulling her back to the present.
Hyejin lifted her gaze slowly, the familiar dark uniform catching her attention first. Her eyes traveled upward until they met Wooyoung’s face. His expression was unusually serious, his sharp features tense as his gaze lingered on the fallen tapestry.
His arm remained around her waist, the warmth of his presence both grounding and disorienting. She could feel the faint pressure of his hold, protective and steady, as if ensuring she wouldn’t stumble. The proximity was overwhelming, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to blur.
“Your Majesty,” Hyejin managed to croak, her voice uncharacteristically quiet. Clearing her throat, she stepped back abruptly, forcing distance between them. The absence of his touch left an unsettling coldness in its wake. “You should… you should be preparing for the ball,” she said, averting her gaze to hide the flush spreading across her cheeks.
Wooyoung finally looked down at her, his serious expression softening just slightly, though his usual playful demeanor was still absent. “And you should watch where you’re standing, Ms. Hwang,” he replied, his tone light but carrying a hint of concern.
Hyejin turned away, willing herself to focus on anything other than the lingering heat where his arm had been. She squared her shoulders, her voice steady once more. “Thank you for your assistance, Your Majesty. But I assure you, I’m more than capable of handling myself.”
Wooyoung tilted his head, a small smirk playing at the corner of his lips now. “I’ll keep that in mind,” he said, his tone teasing but his eyes betraying a glimmer of something deeper—something unspoken.
As he walked away, leaving her standing amidst the bustling ballroom, Hyejin exhaled deeply, her heart still racing. The warmth of his presence lingered, and despite her best efforts to shake it off, the memory of his steady arms and calm demeanor refused to leave her mind.
The grand ballroom of the palace was aglow with the soft flicker of countless chandeliers, casting shimmering golden light over the sprawling hall. The air was thick with the hum of music, laughter, and the rhythmic swish of silk gowns and embroidered robes. Guests, nobles, and dignitaries from far and wide had gathered to celebrate the annual year of the Jung Kingdom, a tradition that brought everyone together in a magnificent show of wealth and power.
At the center of it all stood Prince Wooyoung, a figure of charm and grace, his regal presence unmistakable amidst the sea of glittering attendees. Yet, his demeanor remained remarkably calm as he mingled with the crowd. His usual carefree aura, however, was slightly subdued tonight, as if there was something weighing on his mind—something no one could see.
Yet amidst it, Wooyoung found his way out of the balcony. To escape the talk. To escape to the suffocating life he is in.
Hyejin moved through the crowd with quiet precision, her sharp eyes scanning the room even as she kept herself close to Wooyoung. She was always alert, always aware, but tonight, there was a strange tension in the air. The festivities around them felt almost too grand, too celebratory, as if they were all playing a part in a performance none of them truly understood.
As they both stood at the balcony, the night was silent despite the loud orchestra behind them playing, cold air nipping the exposed skin of their dresses and suits. "Have you ever had troubles, Ms. Hwang?" Wooyoung's voice suddenly cut through the noise, his words almost lost in the melody of the orchestra playing in the background. He stood by large the balcony, the cemented rail was enough safety for him to lean against his back to the railing, his gaze distant as he looked out at the opulence around them.
The question was casual, but there was an underlying sincerity in his tone, something that caught Hyejin off guard.
She raised an eyebrow, eyeing him carefully as she stood just a few feet beside him— her facing the night, her posture protective but calm. “Troubles?” she echoed, her tone skeptical. She wasn’t sure if he was truly asking about her struggles or if he was just making conversation. Wooyoung was always so effortless, so charming in his own way, but she knew better than anyone that his life wasn’t as carefree as it appeared.
The music swelled in the background, but there was a quiet stillness between them. The soft murmur of the crowd felt distant, almost muted. Hyejin’s instincts flared—this was not just a passing question. Wooyoung’s voice was quieter now, like he was sharing something deeper.
She instinctively stood a little closer to him, though still maintaining her space, her eyes scanning the room for any signs of danger. In a palace like this, with so many guests and distractions, a single moment of vulnerability could be deadly.
Wooyoung shifted slightly, his gaze now more introspective. “Relax, Ms. Hwang,” he said, his voice carrying a gentle but firm tone. “This is a sacred place.”
Hyejin scoffed, looking at the prince’s back, her expression unreadable. “You never know.”
The words hung in the air, the tension between them palpable as she stood still, her posture protective, yet ever watchful. Her senses heightened, though she knew better than to be overly anxious in a room so filled with people. She trusted her instincts, but at times like this, trust was a luxury.
There was a brief silence between them, but Wooyoung didn’t seem worried at all. In fact, his calmness was almost unnerving.
“I’m aware of it,” he finally spoke again, his tone suddenly serious. Hyejin frowned, her mind already racing to connect the dots. She raised an eyebrow, turning her head just slightly as she regarded the prince. “Of what?”
Wooyoung paused, his gaze softening for a moment as he looked out over the ballroom. His voice dropped a little lower as he spoke. “The threat.”
Hyejin’s body immediately stiffened at the word, her heart tightening in her chest. It was a word she had tried to ignore, tried to bury beneath layers of duty and responsibility. The threat to Wooyoung had loomed over not only for them but the entire kingdom. But she couldn’t ignore it any longer, especially when he said it so plainly.
Her eyes quickly flickered over Wooyoung's face, searching for any sign of worry. But to her surprise, he looked almost unaffected, as if the weight of the threat didn’t faze him at all. He stood there with the same calm, collected air he always wore—nothing like the turmoil that churned within her.
“You seem calm about it,” Hyejin said, her voice almost a whisper, the hint of disbelief clear. Her eyes never left Wooyoung, watching him closely for any telltale signs of distress.
He finally turned to face her, a small, rueful smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “Yeah…” His eyes met hers, and for a moment, the noise of the ballroom faded away. “But what could I do? I was the last string in the guitar, and a new one will replace me. Either they play it the same way or a new tone will play.”
Hyejin’s breath caught in her throat, her heart aching at his words. The truth in his voice was raw, but it wasn’t the kind of truth that offered comfort. He was accepting his fate, as if he believed there was no way out. She swallowed the lump in her throat, unsure of what to say.
“But why didn’t you tell Chief Jeong, or your bodyguard? … The Queen?” Hyejin pressed, her voice sharper than she intended. The thought of Wooyoung bearing the burden of the threat alone, without confiding in those meant to protect him, stirred something deep inside her. It made her see him in a different light—a young man bearing an impossible weight on his shoulders, yet still maintaining his carefree façade.
He shook his head, the rueful smile lingering on his lips, though it never reached his eyes. “Would you believe anyone you see as trustworthy when everything around you is falling apart?” His words were quiet, but there was a hardness in his tone that hadn’t been there before. His gaze drifted away, focusing on nothing in particular, as if trying to avoid the weight of her question. “The ones you see every day—are they still the same people you knew yesterday?”
There was a long silence, and Hyejin’s mind replayed his words. Her eyes softened, and a quiet thought passed through her, making her voice almost tender when she spoke again. “The Queen?”
His shoulders stiffened, and for the first time, Hyejin noticed a crack in his confident posture. It was as if a shield he didn’t even know he’d been carrying fell away. The mention of his mother, the Queen, caused something in his eyes to flicker—a fleeting moment of vulnerability.
Wooyoung didn’t answer right away. His lips parted slightly as if trying to find the right words, but they seemed to get caught in his throat. He looked away, his eyes clouding with something raw and untapped. For a second, the carefree Prince Wooyoung that everyone knew—the one with laughter in his eyes and mischief in his smile—disappeared. In his place was a scared child, desperately trying to cling to the image of strength that had been forced upon him.
He cleared his throat, a soft laugh escaping his lips, but it was strained. “She’s the Queen, Hyejin. What could she do? A mother, yes—but what good is a mother when the world is crumbling around you?”
Hyejin took a step closer, her voice quiet but firm. “What good is a mother? She’s the one who’ll hold you when you’re breaking. The Queen may be strong, but she’s also your mother. And you, Your Majesty—don’t you think she deserves to know the truth? You can’t keep fighting this alone.”
There was a long pause, and Hyejin could see the shift in Wooyoung’s expression. For a split second, his eyes glistened as if the weight of her words had struck something deep inside him. But just as quickly as it appeared, it vanished—replaced by the smile he wore to hide the fear. It was a smile, yes, but one that spoke of a vulnerability he would never show anyone else.
For a moment, they stood there in silence, both lost in their own thoughts, the noise of the ball swirling around them. Hyejin’s heart felt heavy, but she couldn’t afford to show it. Not now. Not when the prince needed her to remain stoic.
Yet, despite everything—despite the dangers that lurked in the shadows—there was something about this quiet moment between them that felt oddly personal. Something about the way Wooyoung opened up, even if it was just a little.
The sound of the orchestra played on, the laughter of the guests filling the space between them. And as they stood there, side by side, Hyejin couldn’t help but wonder just how long this fragile balance between them would last.
Tumblr media
As Wooyoung and Hyejin strolled back toward the ballroom, guests shrieked, their polished shoes clattering against the marble floor as they rushed toward the exits. Security personnel flooded the room, shouting orders to contain the panic, but their commands only seemed to fuel the hysteria.
Hyejin's pulse thundered in her ears. She instinctively stepped closer to Wooyoung, her hand brushing against his arm to shield him, but her movements faltered when her eyes caught the crude lettering scrawled across a large banner, now hanging lopsided from the balcony above.
"KILLER JUNG."
The letters were crude, large, and dripping in a red substance that looked disturbingly like blood. The message made her stomach churn. It was chilling enough to unnerve even the most seasoned protector, but for Hyejin, it struck a deeper chord.
Her breath hitched as her mind darted back the night she came back to her room. A newspaper, tucked into a crisp white envelope sealed in a blue wax, had been left anonymously on her desk. At the time, she had dismissed it as a prank or an empty threat, but now, the headline blazed in her memory like a warning she’d failed to heed.
The words on the banner felt like a confirmation. Her vision blurred momentarily, her grip on reality slipping as a terrible realization began to form.
Wooyoung, amidst the chaos, stood frozen, his mind racing. His chest tightened as unease coiled in his stomach. He felt like a boy again, small and helpless, his instincts screaming to find his family.
“Mom—!… Hyejin we have to–…” he murmured under his breath, his eyes darting frantically through the room. Panic clawed at him as he searched for his brother and mother in the sea of panicked faces. But when his gaze finally landed on Hyejin, standing as if rooted to the spot, something in him twisted.
Her expression—vulnerable and unguarded—was unlike anything he had seen before. She was always the composed one, the calm amidst the storm. But now, the raw fear in her eyes unsettled him more than the chaos around them.
“Hyejin?” His voice broke through the storm in her mind. She turned sharply to find him standing close, his brow furrowed in concern. “I—” Her voice failed her. The world around her seemed to move in slow motion. The chaotic ballroom, the terrified guests, and the ominous banner all blurred together.
“Hyejin!” A loud yet calming voice cut through the rising din, steady as a lifeline amidst the storm. Yunho strode toward them with purpose, his usual golden-retriever warmth replaced by a commanding presence. His eyes, sharp and unyielding, scanned the chaos with precision. Several members of Wooyoung’s personal security detail flanked him, their expressions grave. At the helm of the group was San, his focus razor-sharp.
“Get Prince Wooyoung out of here immediately,” Yunho ordered, his voice brooking no argument. The guards moved swiftly, forming a human barricade around the prince, ushering him toward the exit.
San pressed a hand to his earpiece, nodding tersely before turning to Yunho. “The situation is being handled,” he reported, his tone clipped and professional.
“I’m not leaving without her,” Wooyoung interjected sharply, his voice cutting through the chaos with unrelenting determination.
Yunho sighed, his composure slipping for a brief second before he regained it. “Your Majesty is looking for you and has demanded you be evacuated now,” he said firmly, his voice tinged with an urgency that left little room for debate.
“Yunho—”
“Your Highness,” Yunho interrupted, surprising both himself and Wooyoung. He softened his tone slightly, though the authority in his words remained intact. “This is not the time for argument. Your safety is our priority.”
Wooyoung exhaled sharply, his gaze snapping to the woman beside him, her blue hanbok dress catching the dim light. “Hyejin?” His voice softened, seeking her input, her reassurance—something to anchor him.
But Hyejin didn’t respond immediately. Her eyes drifted beyond the chaos, to the balcony.
There, a figure stood shrouded in dark clothing. Their face was obscured save for their eyes—piercing, familiar, and unrelenting. Time seemed to slow as those eyes locked onto hers. Recognition hit her like a thunderbolt, stealing the breath from her lungs.
It couldn’t be…
Her stomach twisted violently, a cold wave of nausea crashing over her. Her mind scrambled to dismiss the thought, but the familiarity of those eyes was an undeniable truth she couldn’t escape.
Her hands trembled as she gripped her arm tightly, her nails digging into the delicate fabric of her sleeve. She clawed for control, desperate to ground herself as the world around her spiraled into chaos. This isn’t real. It can’t be real, she thought, her heart pounding so fiercely it drowned out the sounds of the panic-stricken crowd.
“Hyejin?” Wooyoung’s voice cut through the haze, soft yet edged with worry.
Her gaze snapped back to him, but her expression betrayed the storm brewing within. For a brief moment, her composed exterior wavered, revealing a vulnerability that sent a jolt through Wooyoung. His stomach churned at the sight. He’d seen her unflinching in the face of countless challenges, but this—this was different.
Something was wrong. And for the first time, Wooyoung felt the faint, terrifying certainty that Hyejin wasn’t just the palace advisor. She was something much more.
“Hyejin!” Yunho called once again, his voice sharp and commanding over the chaos. Her head snapped toward him, instincts kicking in as her professional demeanor returned. She straightened, pulling herself out of her momentary daze. “Go with them,” she said firmly, her tone clipped as she addressed Wooyoung.
“No.” His defiance was immediate, his jaw tight as his eyes burned with determination.
“Your Majesty.” Her voice softened, but urgency laced her words. “I can’t do my job if I’m worrying about you. Please.”
Her words were calm, almost too calm, but her eyes betrayed her. The vulnerability he had glimpsed earlier lingered just beneath the surface, and it unnerved him. She wasn’t just Hyejin, the composed, ever-capable advisor. For a fleeting moment, she seemed human, fallible—and deeply troubled.
Wooyoung’s stomach churned. His mind raced, piecing together fragments of moments and glimpses of a side of Hyejin he hadn’t fully recognized until now. Something didn’t fit. This wasn’t just about protocol or duty—there was more.
“Hyejin…” he started, his voice quieter this time, almost questioning.
Her expression hardened, the crack in her armor quickly sealing. “Go …” she said, this time more firmly, looking at the bodyguards, “Go now!”
As soon as Wooyoung was gone, Hyejin turned back toward the balcony. The figure had vanished, but their eyes remained imprinted in her mind, sharp and unwavering, as if daring her to forget. Her gaze slowly drifted back to the banner, its words hanging over her like an accusation.
It wasn’t just the boldness of the message that unsettled her—it was the timing, the sheer weight of it, and the gut-wrenching possibility that it might be true. Her grip on reality began to slip. Hyejin had always prided herself on being able to handle chaos, to act swiftly and decisively in moments of danger. But how could she protect Wooyoung when the threat felt so close, so terrifyingly personal?
She promised that this— her purpose of accepting this mission— is all for just the truth of her sister. The truth of what really happened to her, not the thought of seeking revenge.
A soft yet insistent voice broke through her spiraling thoughts. “Hyejin.”
Yunho stood beside her, his presence as calming as it was firm. Despite the chaos around them, there was a gentleness in his tone, a quiet understanding. “You need to regroup with the rest— we can handle this,” he continued, his voice steady but warm, as if grounding her. “Move to the secondary perimeter. Now.”
Hyejin nodded mechanically, her body moving on autopilot, but her mind was trapped in a loop she couldn’t escape. The banner, the newspaper, the figure in the shadows—they were all pieces of the same dark puzzle.
As she moved through the chaos, her thoughts churned. Could it really be true? Could someone she trusted be hiding such a dangerous secret?
Her stomach clenched, and for the first time, doubt gnawed at her confidence. What if everything I know is a lie? One thing was clear: whatever truth lay hidden behind the message, it threatened to unravel everything she had ever believed.
And for the first time in her career, Hyejin wasn’t sure if she was ready to face it.

wishful thinking

scope
541 words
×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××
yang jungwon. how come you’re still single for almost three years?
i paced back and forth biting my newly manicured nails, thinking deeply about this controversial idol’s love life.
he’s seen with so many different girls but all rumors turned out to be false. i know because i was the one who wrote all of them! as in ALL. OF. IT. PIECE. BY. PIECE. i was tasked to do it by the company.
some of his company's staff almost threaten me last week to stop being obsessed with his lovelife but i was only doing my job! i don’t care about his lovelife—
really? how come you’re so eager to know the reason why he’s still single after you? for what? hopes? that he’s still not over you? i almost hear a voice inside my head laughing mockingly at me.
my eyelids tightly closed. even my own mind is contradicting me! wow, i’m going insane.
suddenly, the sound of the door creaking made all my thoughts pop like bubbles into thin air. i heard a voice entered.
“seoji? are you not going out yet? i saw your boss went out.” kyungmin entered the room.
“ah, kyungmin, why? i was about to...”
he raised a brow.
“i was just going to ask you to join me for lunch,” kyungmin’s cheeks flushed, “uh, what were you thinking about...”
i shake my head then smiled to assure him. after that we walked together to the coffee shop infront of the building.
hwang kyungmin is one of my co-workers, an acquaintance. he once confessed his feelings for me and i feel sorry for him 'cause i never see him anything more than friends. i’m glad he still choose to befriend me even after i turned him down, though his advances sometimes are too bold that our co-workers, even my boss thought there is something going on between us. i guess some feelings won’t fade away easily, huh?
“seoji, why are so distracted these days? are you having a hard time at work? did mr. park assigned you to a hard scope again?”
i blinked in confusion. “no? i just... need a little more sleep, i guess?” i chuckled.
he seems serious though. i assured him i’m fine before we ended our lunch break.
now, now. i can’t seem to get jungwon out of my head, i feel the need to see him? no, that’ll be soo awkward. and it’s not like i can just call him and ask us to meet like, we ain't friends nor anything. just ex-lovers.
yeah. maybe a little bit of connection, i can possibly meet him? and thank heaven for probably reading what’s on my mind, when manager park entered our office, a good news was immediately delivered to me.
“miss go, remember the scope i gave to you last night? switch it up with miss hyo. you need to visit the JBS today, make sure to get a statement from yeona lee of hyde company about their boygroup’s recent rumors.”
this is it. my only chance!
yang jungwon, watch your back and don’t let you guard down because i’ll be sneaking into your life before you even know it. mark my word.

Tumblr media
Entering the office of Advisor Kang Yeosang, Hyejin followed as Yunho opened the door, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. She instinctively glanced to her right and immediately caught sight of Wooyoung, who froze like a deer in headlights. He appeared to have been caught red-handed, crouched awkwardly behind a potted plant. His eyes widened before he scrambled to hide himself further, shifting the plant’s leaves in a futile attempt at concealment.
Hyejin sighed, shaking her head as she stepped into the office. As the door clicked shut behind her, muffling the world outside, Wooyoung cautiously parted the leaves of his botanical hiding spot. A pout formed on his lips as he glanced around, only to yelp when his gaze collided with San’s unamused expression.
Arms crossed and eyes sharp, San towered over the scene like an unimpressed older brother.
Wooyoung hastily leapt out from behind the plant, brushing invisible dust off his already pristine outfit. “I’ll just go and... look for Kyungmin,” he mumbled before darting down the hallway like a startled rabbit.
San sighed, shaking his head. “He never learns,” he muttered, striding off after Wooyoung with the calm precision of someone used to such antics.
Inside, Hyejin allowed herself a moment to take in the space before her. The office of the senior advisor was impeccably organized, a reflection of its occupant. Walls lined with shelves held rows of neatly arranged books, some leather-bound and others scrolls tied with fine silk ribbons. The faint scent of parchment and aged ink lingered in the air, mixing with the warm notes of polished wood. A long desk sat in one corner, illuminated by soft pools of light from carefully positioned lamps. On its surface, open books and unfinished scrolls were laid out in a precise arrangement, the scene almost clinical in its meticulousness.
The light filtering through the high windows cast angular shadows across the room, each beam carefully illuminating the ordered world within. Shelves lined the walls, their books and scrolls arranged with an almost obsessive precision. The air carried the faint scent of parchment and polished wood, a subtle reminder of the office’s purpose. No detail seemed unintentional, from the exact placement of the furniture to the absence of even the smallest hint of clutter. It was a space that radiated discipline and control, an environment as meticulous as the man who now entered.
Hyejin’s gaze settled on Kang Yeosang, the palace’s senior advisor for six consecutive years and a childhood friend of the prince. He moved into the room with quiet confidence, each step deliberate, every motion purposeful.
His sharp suit, impeccably tailored, hugged his lean frame without a single crease. His eyes were a piercing gaze that seemed to strip away pretense and cut straight to the truth, cool and calculating in their intensity. His hair, though neatly combed, bore a single rebellious strand that refused to conform—a striking imperfection in an otherwise flawless appearance.
When Yeosang spoke, his voice carried the weight of someone accustomed to being heard. Calm and measured, every word seemed carefully chosen, delivered with the precision of a blade. He wasted nothing—not time, energy, or words.
Even his movements reflected this economy. His gestures were minimal, each one purposeful, each one adding to his composed demeanor. As he took his place at the desk, his fingers brushed a stray scroll into alignment, an action so subtle it seemed second nature.
Hyejin watched him quietly, her mind already analyzing the man before her. His every detail seemed to serve as a silent proclamation of his role: a man of order, of strategy, of control.
“Miss Hwang,” Yeosang greeted with a practiced smile, though the faint lisp in his voice softened the formality. “Please, have a seat.”
Hyejin’s expression didn’t waver. She moved gracefully to one of the plush chairs, her posture straight and poised. The room was a reflection of its owner—meticulously organized but with tiny touches of personality scattered like hidden Easter eggs. A small diffuser puffed out lavender-scented mist on the bookshelf, while the precise placement of books and scrolls made it clear Yeosang was as much a curator as an advisor.
As she settled into one of the plush seats, her keen eyes flicked to the man in front of her. Kang Yeosang exuded an air of authority, but it was tempered by a natural charm that made his sharp suit feel almost out of place. His neatly combed hair, for example, was betrayed by a rebellious strand that danced freely above his temple.
Although he moved to his desk with a grace that lasted until the corner of his coat caught on the chair. The small hitch made him pause and adjust himself with an exaggerated deliberation, as though convincing anyone watching that it had been part of the plan. Hyejin’s lips twitched at the effort.
“Miss Hwang,” Yeosang began, straightening a stack of papers that didn’t need straightening. “I apologise if you were suddenly given a task to make a review of each of the palace staff profiles but I was assured by your head chief that you would excel at this simple task.”
“I have,” Hyejin replied, her voice steady. “I’m familiar with their roles, connections, and habits.”
Yeosang nodded, his expression shifting to one of intrigue. “Impressive. Go on.”
Hyejin’s tone was neutral, though her delivery was sharp. “Jihee, the head maid, has served for twelve years. Her assistant, Mina, often takes unauthorized liberties with palace access, possibly to relay information to her brother in the capital. Captain Jang oversees the royal wing’s security, but Lieutenant Seo seems... distracted, perhaps overly so because his wife is currently on maternity leave.”
Yeosang’s brows lifted, and he leaned back, his fingers steepling under his chin. “And me?”
Her gaze flicked over him. “Six years as senior advisor. A reputation for precision and impartiality, though you’re not above making light of formalities to put others at ease. Loyal to the prince, but pragmatically so—you seem to value the palace’s stability above all else.”
Yeosang’s mouth quirked in a half-smile. “Fair observations, Miss Hwang, though you’ve missed one thing.”
Hyejin tilted her head slightly, waiting.
“I am not without my quirks,” he said with mock solemnity, gesturing vaguely toward the stubborn strand of hair that refused to cooperate.
Hyejin’s lips twitched again. “I had noticed. It does give you a... humanizing touch, Advisor Kang.”
Yeosang chuckled lightly, the sound breaking the tension in the room. “Well played, Miss Hwang. You’ve clearly done your homework. That will serve you well—provided you, don’t let it get to your head.”
“Only if I’m allowed to act on what I’ve learned,” she countered smoothly. Yeosang leaned forward, his tone both amused and pointed. “In this palace, Miss Hwang, acting on knowledge is both a privilege and a test. You’ll find that balance soon enough.”
“Well then,” he said, clasping his hands as though beginning a lecture. “Let’s start with a bit of history. The Jung family has ruled this kingdom for—” He paused, counting silently on his fingers. “—oh, about three centuries, give or take a decade. Though, if you ask His Highness, he’ll round up to make it sound more impressive.”
Hyejin nodded, jotting down notes in her mind. Yeosang noticed her focus and grinned.
“They’re not all exciting details, I admit. But I’ve found a few gems over the years.” He leaned forward conspiratorially. “For example, did you know the Jung family once hosted a banquet where an entire roasted ox was accidentally set on fire? The cooks saved it by convincing the guests it was a new culinary technique. Flaming Ox Feast, they called it.”
Hyejin blinked, her face betraying nothing. “How did the guests react?”
“They loved it,” Yeosang said, his grin widening. “One guest asked for a second serving and accidentally set his sleeve on fire. That’s why we now have strict safety protocols for royal banquets.” Hyejin didn’t react outwardly, but Yeosang caught the faintest twitch of her lips.
Moving on, he tapped a finger on a large book spread open before him. “Now, about the family’s businesses. For the past fifteen years, the Jung family has invested heavily in industries ranging from agriculture to renewable energy. The silk trade remains their crown jewel, though His Highness is trying to modernize their portfolio.”
He pointed to a graph in the book, then glanced at Hyejin, who was clearly absorbing every word.
“And the traditions,” he continued, flipping a page with a flourish. “Each kingdom celebrates its ancestral heritage three months apart from the others. It’s a logistical nightmare for someone like me, but it ensures no one’s anniversary gets overshadowed. Think of it as a staggered birthday party—except with less cake and more politics.”
Yeosang paused, tilting his head thoughtfully. “Actually, I take that back. There’s plenty of cake. One year, I tripped carrying a slice and spilled icing all over Prince Wooyoung’s ceremonial sash. He hasn’t let me forget it.”
Hyejin’s gaze flicked to him. “And yet, you remain the senior advisor.”
“Resilience, Miss Hwang,” he said with mock gravity. “And a very expensive dry-cleaning service.”
As he spoke, Yeosang gestured animatedly, occasionally knocking over a quill or misplacing a scroll, only to retrieve it seconds later with an apologetic laugh. Despite his clumsy moments, his words carried weight, and his passion for the history and traditions of the palace was evident. Hyejin, ever composed, absorbed the information with an almost mechanical efficiency. Her stoic demeanor was a sharp contrast to Yeosang’s lively explanations, but somehow, their energies balanced the room.
When Yeosang paused to sip his tea, he caught her staring at the diffuser. “Ah, lavender,” he said, gesturing toward it. “Supposed to help with focus. Or was it sleep? Either way, it smells nice.”
Hyejin nodded curtly. “It’s effective.”
“Thank you, Miss Hwang,” he said with an exaggerated bow, causing his chair to creak alarmingly. Though her expression remained unchanged, Hyejin’s silence carried the faintest edge of amusement, like a ripple in a still pond.
As their conversation came to a close, Yeosang leaned back in his chair, folding his arms. “And that, Miss Hwang, is your crash course in palace history, business ventures, and our frankly exhausting calendar of traditions. Any questions?”
Hyejin’s gaze remained steady. “None, Advisor Kang. Your explanations were... thorough.”
“I live to serve,” he replied with a mock salute, only to knock over his tea in the process. As he scrambled to save the documents from the spreading stain, Hyejin sets a soft sigh through her nose before rising gracefully, her expression unchanging as she watches him flail.
“Good day, Advisor Kang,” she said, bowing her head in respect, turning toward the door.
“And to you, Miss Hwang,” Yeosang called after her, still clutching a soggy parchment. “Try not to take life too seriously—it’s more fun this way.”
Her only response was the soft click of the door closing behind her, leaving Yeosang to wonder if she’d ever cracked a smile in her life.
Tumblr media
Hyejin made her way to the palace library, a haven of tranquility bathed in soft golden sunlight streaming through tall, arched windows. The endless rows of bookshelves, stacked meticulously with leather-bound volumes, seemed to invite her into their world of wisdom and secrets. Just moments after she steps out of Senior advisor Yeosang, Kang Yeosang’s voice called out from behind her.
“Miss Hwang!” He poked his head out from his office, a sly smile tugging at his lips as he held up another folder. “One more for your collection. You’ll thank me later.”
Hyejin arched her brow but said nothing as she took the file. The name embossed on the cover in bold letters immediately caught her attention: Jung Wooyoung—the crown prince of the Jung Kingdom.
A new assignment lay before her: to uncover more about Prince Jung Wooyoung and discern why he might be targeted by an enemy. The weight of the task settled in her mind, weaving threads of possibilities and scenarios. Some seemed straightforward, almost too obvious, yet she couldn’t ignore the sense of something deeper lurking beneath the surface.
Her lips tilted slightly to the side in thought as she jotted down notes on the notepad she always carried. Yeosang’s earlier lecture about the Jung family history replayed in her mind, prompting her to stand and head toward the towering shelves that lined the library walls. Her movements were purposeful, her surroundings blurring as her focus sharpened on the task.
Reaching the genealogy section, her breath hitched in mild surprise. Each member of the Jung family had their own book, meticulously organized by generation. The current lineage was no exception, with titles gleaming in gold embossing. Even Queen Jung’s life story had its volume, regal and dignified among the others.
Hyejin’s fingers ghosted over the spines before stopping at one labeled Prince Jung Wooyoung. It was lighter than she’d expected, though its presence spoke volumes.
She opened the file first, her gaze immediately drawn to its contents. Her eyes scanned the neatly typed lines, each word meticulously crafted to paint a vivid portrait of the prince: his accolades, his ceremonial duties, and his undeniably mischievous reputation. Her lips twitched faintly at the candid photograph clipped to the file—a snapshot of Wooyoung smiling gently, his expression carefree and full of life, his eyes sparkling with unrestrained joy.
Her fingers brushed against the edges of the photo as her thoughts wandered. Mischievous yet diligent, unpredictable yet fiercely loyal. There was more to Prince Jung Wooyoung than the surface suggested, and Hyejin intended to uncover every layer.
With the book resting in her lap and the file spread out before her, Hyejin couldn’t help but feel a flicker of intrigue, one that hinted this assignment would be anything but ordinary.
Her head tilted to the side, “Why are you being targeted …”
Just as she turned another page, the quiet serenity of the library was shattered by the sound of chaotic footsteps and a burst of loud laughter. The marble floors amplified the noise of squeaky shoes, echoing through the cavernous space.
Hyejin barely had time to glance up before a blur of movement barreled into her.
“Ack—!”
“Ah!”
It all seemed to happen in slow motion, as if the universe itself had decided to gift Wooyoung one of his beloved romantasy moments. The collision sent Hyejin stumbling backward, but before she could hit the floor, a warm hand cradled the back of her head, cushioning her fall.
Time stretched impossibly thin as she opened her eyes, the world around her a haze of sunlight and blurred shapes. The only thing in focus was the face hovering mere inches above hers—a pair of wide, apologetic brown eyes framed by dark, windswept hair.
Hyejin’s breath hitched as she recognized him instantly. Prince Jung Wooyoung.
“Uh, hi?” Wooyoung offered, his voice soft and hesitant, as if unsure whether to apologize or laugh at the sheer absurdity of the moment. His hand still rested behind her head, his other splayed across the marble floor to brace their fall. The proximity was dizzying.
Hyejin blinked, trying to steady herself, though the faint heat rising to her cheeks betrayed her otherwise stoic expression. “Your Highness, if you don’t mind...”
“Oh! Right!” Wooyoung scrambled to his feet, his movements clumsy but endearing, before extending a hand to help her up. “I, uh... didn’t mean to crash into you. Literally. Hyungmin stole my limited-edition figurine, and—I mean, not that you care about that, but—are you okay? Did I hurt you?”
Hyejin ignored his rambling as she brushed herself off, her composure returning like armor sliding into place. “I’m fine, Your Highness. However, the library is not the place for such... activities.”
Wooyoung winced, running a hand through his tousled hair. “Yeah, uh, sorry about that. I’ll just...” He trailed off, his gaze dropping to the open file now scattered on the floor. His photo stared back at him, smug as ever.
“Wait,” he said, his lips quirking into a grin. “Were you reading about me?”
Hyejin hesitated, her silence more damning than any words.
“Oh, this is perfect,” Wooyoung declared, his grin widening as he crouched to gather the fallen papers. “Did Yeosang give you this? Of course, he did. What’d he say about me? ‘Most charming prince in history’? ‘Devastatingly handsome’? ‘A little clumsy but lovable’?”
Hyejin took the papers from his hands, her movements sharp and deliberate. “Professional details, Your Highness. Nothing more.”
Wooyoung straightened, his boyish charm undeterred. “Well, if you want the real details, you’ll have to ask me directly. Lucky for you, I’m not busy—except for the whole Hyungmin-stealing-my-stuff situation. Speaking of which—Hyungmin!”
With a sudden burst of energy, Wooyoung darted off again, chasing the culprit down the hall. His laughter echoed through the library, a mix of exasperation and pure, unfiltered joy.
Hyejin stood rooted to the spot, the faintest trace of a smile threatening to tug at her lips. She quickly shook it off, returning her attention to the scattered pages in her hands. But as she gathered them, one thought lingered in her mind: The crown prince was as unpredictable as the stories described—and perhaps just as dangerous to her carefully composed world.
Her head drops to the side as she marvels through the library with a faint thump in her chest.
