Dance Moms S1e02
DANCE MOMS SEASON ONE
Episode 2 @starquest lancaster, pennsylvania April 14-17 2011
Group: ELECTRICITY (Jazz) didn't place
Chloe: BABY MINE (Musical Theatre)(Result Not Shown) 1st Junior
Maddie: CRY (Lyrical) 1st Petite, Petite Miss StarQuest
Vivi-Anne,Mackenzie WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS (Acro Jazz) didn't place
Note: Starquest was upset that viewers were misled about the awards, and the show and its producers were banned from attending Starquest.
Note: Electricity is based on the Single Ladies group number that Dance Precisions did (with Autumn Miller front & center) which won them a national title and caused a media circus. Sidenote: Maddie & Autumn Miller have been friends since 2010.
Note: During pyramid, Maddie is using the time to stretch; she's in a split. Sidenote: Pyramid actually takes hours and is edited down to a few minutes. Abby is given story points to hit by producers during pyramid and Collins said Abby says 'I got this' and delivers.
Note: After pyramid the clip of the girls rehearsing is more footage from 1st episode where Maddie had a stomache ache.
Holly vt- "Everyone else, there was something wrong. But Maddie had nothing wrong. She was perfect. That makes my kid feel bad."
Christi vt- "Abby'll be working with Maddie right before she goes on stage and it'll be me in the back hallway with my daughter, because that's how it always is. All the focus is on Maddie and then there is nothing left for anybody else."
Abby vt- "I don't have my own children, but I teach children from three years old to eighteen. I practically raise these kids and then I send them off to be professional dancers. The best parenting that a parent can do is to raise their child to survive on their own. And that's what I do. I train a kid. I give them every survival skill that they need to go out in the world and make it as a professional dancer."
Abby vt- "These moms come to me because of my credentials and of course my success rate. But then they want to tell me how to do my business. Not gonna happen."
Note: The Cathy and Vivi-Anne in the car footage is used for the first time here, and other footage from the same trip is used throughout the rest of season one.
Note: Cathy meets the moms for the 'first time' in the mezzanine. This is one of the very rare times the mothers are sitting on the side facing studioB where Vivi-Anne and Mackenzie are practicing. Normally they face the rehearsal studio where pyramid is filmed.
Note: The moms find it weird that Cathy brought Vivi-Anne to another studio when she owns her own. This is production having the mothers pretend they are not on a reality tv show and that Cathy is not a fellow cast member.
Maddie vt- "I dance 7 days a week. From 4 o'clock to 10 o'clock. And we don't get home to like 11:45."
Christi vt- "Maddie's been in class this week working on her solo. And it's perfected and it's wonderful, it's perfect. And she's going to send my daughter out on stage kinda looking like a fool. I often wonder if Abby gave Chloe one twentieth of the same attention she gave Maddie, what kind of dancer my daughter could be. The only one giving her attention really is me. And I'm not a qualified dance teacher. I wonder what it's doing to her pyche to always be held down and not given the same opportunities to excel." Chloe, who is holding two national titles, and wins first place in Junior at this competition.
Note: This is the beginning of the chloe-as-underdog theme. Probably began as a storyline from production (as her win is edited out to make it seem like Maddie won and poor Chloe lost) and Christi took it and ran with it all the way to the last episode of season4.
Note: Abby to Chloe- "We're just adding two steps in." while rehearsing Chloe's solo with Gianna.
Abby vt- "Chloe is one of my strongest dancers. She's really coming along nicely. There's a few technical issues she needs to work on. But mainly applying corrections. She needs to apply corrections quickly and then move on."
Abby vt- "Christi's telling me she's concerned about Chloe, she's concerned about the new music, and her performance this weekend, then she wants to leave early. And my older students that have gone on to be Broadway professionals, they would have stayed in this room until midnight."
Note: Abby to Chloe- "If you want to leave, leave."
Christi to Chloe- "I know you're tired, I know we were supposed to come home early. You have to finish your solo."
Chloe- "But it's finished. We just need to fix mmmmm-"
Christi's hand covers Chloe's mouth. "I know you do but it's an hour and I can come back and get you. Okay? I know, Chlo, I'm sorry. If you want to come home you can, but then we should probably pull your solo. Okay? I know I promised you and I'm so sorry. You'll be okay."
Abby- "Chloe, I don't know what all that's about, and all that hugging and all that crying, and all that carrying on, is ridiculous. Who's in there? Who's leaving at 8:45 tonight?"
Chloe- "Maddie."
Abby- "You're an amazing dancer. You're Junior Miss Dance of Pennsylvania right now. You should never be leaving early. This is what's important. This is your life right now. Yes? Be in tap in two minutes. Go."
Chloe vt- "I feel like I just need a break sometimes and she's pushing me to an upper level that I didn't know I should be at yet. But I feel like I should take the challenge."
Note: The first bus trip filmed in the bus with the girls getting makeup and hair done, putting on costumes, stretching, laughing, etc. It is also the last bus trip filmed with Cathy and Vivi-Anne.
Chloe vt- "I am really nervous that maybe I won't hit all the turns and remember the choreography. I'm just- I feel kind of pressured." "A lot of times I feel compared to Maddie but I think it's unfair because we're different people so we shouldn't be compared. When I'm dancing it should be about me and when Maddie's dancing it should be about Maddie."
Maddie vt- "I sometimes get scared of the person before me when I'm dancing at a competition because I'm not sure if they're good or not. And I kind of... I don't know, I just kind of get really nervous."
Abby vt- "If I had to evaluate Chloe and Maddie's performance, it was neck and neck. They both did an outstanding job today. They came ready to perform and ready to compete and that's what they did."
Christi vt- "No matter how successful Chloe is she is never successful enough in Abby's eyes. If Chloe doesn't prevail, or win a category, or doesn't dance as well as another child, Maddie!, you know, and she throws that in Chloe's face all the time and that's not fair." "Chloe is definitely in competition for the best dancer in the group and Maddie and Chloe go back and forth. On any given day it could be either one of them."
Note: After Maddie wins 1st Petite solo, and wins her crown as Petite Miss StarQuest:
Abby vt- "Of course Maddie came out on top. I expect nothing less. It takes time and energy and perseverance and the kid has it."
Note: After this confessional, the girls and moms and Abby are outside the theatre doors and Chloe is holding her trophy for 1st Junior solo.
Abby in dressing room- "Girls, you're wearing two piece costumes. Either sit down and do a hundred sit ups or paint the abs on. One or the other. Let's go."
Christi to moms- "They just don't get...because they're doing what they're told to do, but then you stand there as an adult and you watch EVERY man in the lobby go like, rubberneck, when those girls walk by."
Note: Dance Depot beat the girls.
Christi vt- "Abby's going to get the score sheets back from the judges and we're going to know what the judges' thoughts were. And I guarantee you the judges are thinking 'Inappropriate!'"
Abby vt- "I thought they looked fabulous. I thought it was a hot number. I thought it was exciting. I thought it was 2011. I thought they did a great job."
Note: During the mom confrontation with Holly and Christi and Abby, Abby says "Excuse me," when she interrupts Holly.
Abby vt- "Christi and Holly verbally assaulted me. When a parent opens their mouth they are ruining their child. And that's what they need to think about. Everyone is replaceable. That's the first thing you learn in my studio. And that is THE last time it will ever happen. It should not have happened. Chloe absolutely loves the costume, loves what she's doing, is a very talented little girl but her mother's going to ruin her. It's obvious."
