Interlude 1. Aftermath

FDS Frontier Captain’s log: June 8th, 2538

First contact had been made.

Well, it wasn’t exactly first contact per-se. Being an Alliance of two separate species required both parties have a “first contact moment” with each other, after all. But this was the first time since the combined Human-Tathrax Alliance was founded that they had encountered sentient, space-faring life other than their own.

Unlike the excitement surrounding the discovery of the Tathrax some 300 years ago, the discovery of this new civilization was a lot more solemn. After all, the first message of greeting from our new friends was 23cm metal slug slamming into the Frontier’s main fuel tank.

Of the roughly Forty-three thousand people crewing the Frontier defense fleet, some twelve and a half thousand had perished. It was a disaster. We had lost 66 ships - around 44% of their entire fleet - in the engagement. It was a devastating loss.

Despite the losses, we had, technically, won. Not a single Alien ship had escaped, all but one ship had been completely destroyed by the last-ditch ramming attack Captain Zinn had led.

The remaining ship was heavily damaged, but largely intact. This was thanks to the FDV Knockout accidentally piercing the hull early, causing the ship to vent its atmosphere, along with several of its crew members into space. The ship had been dragged back to the (now crippled) Frontier, and through some complicated “docking maneuvers” involving a blowtorch and the station’s robotic arms, access to the vessel was gained.

The first thing that stuck out was how few crew members were needed to operate craft. Human/Tathrax vessels were usually crewed by 2-300 individuals, whereas despite being nearly three times the size, the alien vessel had an estimated crew of 100 at most.

The second thing that stuck out to the salvage crew was what appeared to be a dark-red hand. Apparently, one of the crew members had survived the initial decompression, and donned an oxygen mask (or rather, something resembling one), enabling them to survive long enough to attack one of the poor sods in the salvage crew.

When all was said and done, the salvage crew managed to “rescue” five very unhappy individuals from the ship. We took them to our detention facility, but we let them keep their masks. We weren’t sure if they breathed oxygen like us or not, so we decided to play it safe, rather than risk unintentionally suffocating them.

Efforts to decode the alien language were ongoing, and while the aliens seemed to have some understanding of modern English, it wasn’t enough to get any meaningful information out of our unexpected guests. Their entire vocabulary consisted largely of terms related to negotiation. Terms like “hostage,” “surrender,” “no harm,” along with the names of various resources and numbers. It would seem that the aliens planned to attack our fleet and possibly take hostages, in order to force us to the negotiating table.

Luckily this hadn’t happened, but such a tactic was worrying. HD 164922, being on the Frontier of Human-Tathrax space, was nearly exclusively a military system. However, numerous other frontier systems were not home to just military installations. Some were tourist destinations, others had research facilities, and a select few had recently-established colonies. Had any of these systems come under attack, the aliens likely would’ve been successful in their plan.

More concerningly, we had learnt the hard way that our weapons are ineffective. The aliens had exclusively used rail guns and other slugthrowers, whereas we had used plasma and laser-based weapons. Can you blame us? This was space. Everyone knew that in space, you use lasers and plasma bolts! But unfortunately, these aliens have decided that Age of Sail-style close-range broadsides are too risky, so they cower tens of kilometers away instead. As a result, our weapons cannot pierce their armor. Tests on the remains of their warships proved that our weapons can be effective, but we have to be within 5-10km in order to have a chance to do any damage.

Along with various ship parts, recovery teams also collected some thirty or so bodies of the ships’ former crew. Their dark-red skin turns a shade blue in death. The exact mechanisms of this are unknown, but the eggheads over in the medical wing are busy working on figuring that out. They initially wanted to perform tests on our new friends in the detention wing, but I shut that down before they had the chance to become war criminals.

The most fascinating discovery by the eggheads proved our initial suspicions correct. Despite the fact they had a pair of lung-like organs, they didn’t breathe oxygen. Rather, they breathed a mixture of Hydrogen, and Uranium Hexaflouride. I wasn’t about to let the eggheads pump metric tons of uranium into my precious Frontier, nor was I going to pump boatloads of hydrogen into it either - not that we had much left - someone blew the majority of it up, after all. In the end, we settled on just making our guests some impromptu oxygen - or rather, hydrogen masks.

We forwent adding Uranium Hexaflouride to the mix, on account of being several light years from the nearest device capable of producing it. While in theory we could order a shipment of the stuff from Earth, I’d rather just ship the aliens back to Earth instead. The paperwork needed to ensure the proper treatment of our POWs would be a nightmare, so the sooner they were off my station the better.

With all of this, hopefully central command realizes we need more than beat-up old destroyers, and gives us one of those new Shōkaku-class carriers, or Kongō-class battlecruisers (courtesy of Akatsuki Shipyards). Hell, even a Casablanca-class or Constitution-class would be welcome at this point. Anything’s better than these damn Action-class corvettes. I’ll try requesting some. Worst case scenario is I get laughed at for having the gall to ask for our Navy’s newest toys. Best case is that somehow we are actually given the things. It’s worth a shot.

The Frontier Defense Fleet has always been the laughing stock of our navy - we’re stuck out here with minimal resources and rusting ships. But even that won’t stop us from trying our hardest to blast these aliens all the way to Andromeda. Bring it on E.T.! We’ll beat your asses any day of the week!

I didn’t realize when I bought Scarlet that my boyfriend AND all of our friends were also buying Scarlet and it’s made filling the Pokédex so much worse for all of us smfh 😔

I’m in this predicament now where I’ve only got 5 Pokémon left to complete my Dex and 4 of them r violet exclusives and I’m so sick of wonder trade but we actually don’t know anyone who owns Violet and game exclusive raids are almost impossible to get into. 🥲 Like it’s so bad that I was genuinely more excited about the Gulpin I finally received after non stop wonder trades for 3 days than the random level 100 shiny Charizard I got 2 trades later 💀

If You Give An Astromech A Knife

Have the first ~800 words

It was an unsuspected crash and rattle that roused C-3PO from his normal mid-afternoon stasis nap. This time most days, Senator Amidala was busy at the Senate building and Master Anakin did not often come by until evening. He had not been forewarned of any social engagements, not to receive any guests on behalf of the Senator. Which could only conclude that the crash coming from the kitchen had been caused by an intruder!

How could an intruder possibly have gotten into the apartment? His mistress lived in a very exclusive building and there were supposed to be security protocols in place to ensure the safety of the residents, and the security of their property. Really, how could something like this happen?

C-3P0 shuffled over to the comm panel to summon building security. He paused half-way there when he recognized the pitch of hoots and beeps coming from the kitchen… and, even more so, he recognized the creative mix of binary profanity. The protocol droid hurried to the kitchen, his circuits withered when he heard the crash and spill of more cutlery across the floor.

He saw the offending blue and white astromech pull another drawer from its home in the cabinet and tip its contents onto the floor.

“Artoo-Deetoo, what are you doing?”

R2-D2 turned his domed head to look C-3PO over with his optic before turning his attention to the cutlery he was digging through.

“Palpatine’s evil.”

3PO started back a half step. “I beg your pardon?”

R2 picked a long-bladed knife from the pile on the floor. The blade was serrated and there was a wickedly sharp hooked point on its tip. It was most often utilized for carving up melons, and 3PO could not fathom what R2-D2 would need with a knife.

“Palpatine. Is. Evil.”

“What do you mean Chancellor Palpatine is evil? And who is this?” C-3PO was so stunned by the accusation he didn’t notice another little droid in the kitchen. A small, boxy, bipedal unit, a BD-series droid if he was not mistaken. The little red and white droid was also pawing through the spilled cutlery and testing out its ability to hold various sharp knives. It tried a butcher knife but found the blade a little too unwieldy to stay balanced on one foot.

“That’s BD-1.” Artoo turned his optic to the small droid. “Try the little serrated one.”

C-3PO was certain his circuits were misfiring. This couldn’t possibly be happening. But he knew he best get an explanation from R2 to pass onto his mistress when she returned home this evening to find all of her cutlery in need of sanitization.

“What does Mistress Padme’s cutlery have to do with the Chancellor?”

R2 did not have the ability to roll his optic, and yet somehow… “For stabbing the Chancellor, of course. Ready, BD-1?”

The BD unit had found a steak knife much easier to wield than the butcher’s cleaver, and he chirped his affirmative., giving the knife a few practice stabs.

It was only the fact that 3PO had not even moved from the kitchen doorway that he had the wits to block it in the first place. “Now just one minute, Artoo-Deetoo! You cannot take Mistress Padme’s knives, and use them to commit a crime! I won’t allow it. And what proof do you have that the Chancellor is evil?”

R2 released a long warbling sigh. Then he launched into a lightning-fast explanation of his proof that was so blistering 3PO’s profanity filters had difficulty keeping up.

R2 had accompanied Master Anakin to see the Chancellor for another one of their [redacted] meetings, and as normal, R2 was quickly forgotten. Having sat through enough of these [censored][censored] things he thought he might as well see how much he could get away with before anyone took notice. So… he scomped into Palpatine’s personal datalink, and it was really a minor matter of basic slicing to access the chancellor’s personal logs, and really the [redacted][censored][redacted] Supreme Chancellor should have better [censored] security on her personal logs. Anyway, the [censored] has a thing for monologuing to his video logs and R2 was able to download twenty [redacted] years of his [censored][redacted] evil plans.

R2 had been looking through the personal logs to see just how [censored] deranged the leader of the Free Galaxy truly is, and he uncovered a Palpatine’s plan to hurt both Master Anakin and Mistress Padme, and those are his humans!

BD-1 is always up for an excuse to try stabbing someone, and R2 knew fully well Mistress Padme has a great many knives at her disposal, so here they are. Raiding the kitchen and taking a couple of Padme’s knives to cut a [redacted][redacted].

Duck Beater at Ten; or, The Orphans

[Editor’s Note: I started this blog a decade ago—occasion enough, I thought, for me to reflect on what it’s meant to contribute (in my extraordinarily untimely and narrow way) to a log that has tried (and more often failed) at recording where I’m at and how I’m doing and what I’m thinking and where I’m going. Having this space has not unreasonably kept me in it—I mean, its persistence has kept me reflecting more or less on the period of its inception. I think a lot about who I was at 23, which is idiotic and costly. I read more books back then. I had no money. My best friend was my brother. I thought I would write a novel.] 

Years ago, my brother’s friend offended him when she asked me why I didn’t prefer one brand of paint over another. I was probably in my apartment's kitchen, working on a canvas, and they were probably behind me, eating my boyfriend's food.

I painted then because I was very poor. One way of thinking through your poverty—if you haven't drugs or sex or a brain injury—is to create pointless tasks for yourself, which is what art-making very often is. It's like Vicodin. It's very lovely, costly, addicting, transporting and makes your stomach hurt if you're not full-up already on something else (say, mashed potatoes). I was painting a truly hideous “family portrait”—globs of white and green paint shaped like cast-off “Sesame Street” creatures—and I was painting, besides, for myself. To hold the brush and to fold the colors and to smell the Turpenoid. A.J. had the money for food (our dying grandfather had cosigned on a student loan) and yet there he was with Victoria, in my apartment, peeling back the silvery foil of a Pop-Tart, making crinkling sounds.

I shouldn't say “my apartment” because it was really Cole’s: I had decamped there when we fell hard in love. This was on the corner of Union and Greenwich, across from an intramural field, and beyond that the law school. It was low-income housing: most has been destroyed; and now that I'm on Google I find the places I walked by, the porch I painted bright blue, the rooms I cherished (orange, annoyingly), they've all disappeared. There's odd grassy lots where there were once old, three-apartment houses, their interiors mangled to accommodate the crying fits of off-campus seniors. In the decade since their vanishment, even the indentations of walkways, of their foundations are invisible, and the lawns are as serene and flat and verdant as well-maintained graves. I recall coming off work one night that October, and finding Cole in the stairwell to the second-floor flat. He was crumpled in a ball, on the phone, arguing with his father: I should visit for Thanksgiving; I should be considered family. He was so angry he was bawling, and he hated me to touch him, and I left him in a daze which is also how I finally left him—in a daze, hating me to touch him. (But on better terms with his father.) Well, that stairwell is gone.

A.J. and Victoria, and in fact many of A.J.’s other law school friends, they regularly came into this apartment. (I have written about them before and realized only in editing this piece that the following brief description is a paraphrase of that missive.) They played Mario Kart on the GameCube, recited Moot Court speeches and ate take-out on the sofas. They gossiped incessantly because a small law school is a high school (it even had lockers), and the attendees are as reckless and dispirited and status-hungry as freshmen in a high school. He was a first year then and I was a fifth year finishing my undergrad, and so I saw all of A.J.'s new friends more than I ever saw my old ones because my old friends had moved on. (They went to Austin, Texas. They stayed at most three years and then relocated to either Los Angeles or the Pacific Northwest.)

I want to try to remember Victoria without resorting to her Instagram account. Back then, she took great pains to distinguish herself as a sophisticated New Englander. I see: high socks, long “piecey” hair, a face white-powdered to pore-less perfection. Perhaps because she was changing her life at twenty-eight and not at twenty-three, as other law students were, her look inclined toward the transformative, toward the gothic and the chic-severe. (Why am I describing her as a later-day Wednesday Addams? She was not a Wednesday Addams. She wore colors. She drank Pimm’s with grape fruit slices and soda water. We took day trips to places like Gary, Indiana, listening to Sam Amidon on the Camry’s stereo.) What I think is, she was alarmed and depressed to be at a “fourth-tier law school in the middle of an ugly corner in uglier Indiana,” and so rebelled against the smallness of her new life by having outsized opinions on luxury goods and fine foods and exotic locales. The worst was that no one knew what she was talking about. She felt this and compensated by hosting foreign film nights. She preferred “the scene,” knew of a scene (there was a music one close by, apparently, in Chicago), and she called herself, sometimes guffawing, a “scenester,” but also wanted us to know she was down with whatever. Just, whatever. She nettled everyone but mostly everyone pitied her, so on balance, her gloom and her snobbery were tolerated.

Victoria made mysterious, indelible gestures. Their performances were somehow less memorable than their obscure resonances, and those resonances affected us obscurely, too. An example. She once loaned A.J. a copy of A Wild Sheep Chase, wanting to hook him on Murakami. When he gave it back unread at the end of term, she insisted it was a replacement copy, that he had lost her original. “If I lost your book,” he told her flatly (and not at all to his credit), “I would not have bothered replacing it.” She said, “No, no—you would. And this is proof.” She told exasperated classmates that A.J. had lost her beloved Murakami paperback and tried to replace it with an exact copy, a conviction seemingly borrowed from the phantasmagorical worlds of Murakami. She used this as a wedge issue about trust, about fidelity. “You’re a coward who couldn’t tell me the truth,” she said, slipping comfortably into a Whit Stillman role. “You’re a deceiver.” To this day, A.J. accepts loaned books graciously while maintaining (not, I think, aloud), “If I lose this, I won’t replace it.” He has never replaced a book I loaned and then he re-loaned again, and there have been more than a dozen. Victoria gave him that.

Another example. When A.J. proposed to his wife, Victoria emailed soon after, advising against the marriage. Incredibly, she sent an email to A.J.’s fiancée too, her reasons for either party diametrically proposed. She was not certain A.J. harbored a strong enough attachment to commit to what she thought would be a lifelong and life-destroying folly. And to Tayler, she said that the two did not know each other enough; that, although they met and dated in high school, and all through college, had not found themselves as adults and might try living longer, in other relationships, before settling down. The emails were cruel, stupid, and strange. Their audience did the generous thing: blamed them on the performer's romantic illusions and then dismissed them as curiosities. Yet sometimes A.J. wishes he had kept his “receipts”—that he’d printed out Victoria’s appeals to him and Tayler, to have at hand such shining examples of sincerity. I’ve heard him rueful about it. “I’m not trying to be an asshole,” he’s said, “but I wish I had these things to point to and say, ‘Here is someone who believes she is doing the right thing.’” But all those emails are gone. The law school closed last year—rather spectacularly, given the coverage in the Times. He doesn’t even have an alumni vanity mailing address.

Victoria adopted this business about oil paints from someone else, her “friend who shows in Chelsea,” a factor that compounded  A.J.'s ire. “He uses exclusively, I think, Windsor and Newton,” she said. “Mixing from other labels creates inconsistencies, sometimes chemical clashes?” She opened the fridge and A.J., after scrubbing it with a towel, sat atop the counter. Bluish light came in through bay windows. The law students appeared not only chronically under-slept (they were) but also ethereal, and perhaps very ill. Victoria helped herself to milk. The cords in A.J.'s neck strained as he gazed at the ceiling, lips pursed, white-knuckling the countertop. Some of this was histrionics and some of this was my brother holding onto his sanity.

I said I didn’t I have a preference—or rather, I just didn’t think about it. I had inherited some desiccated oils from my grandma, raided other buttery leftovers from the art building, had bought cheap, thin student sets in the last full years of school—and I got by on what I had. I got by beautifully, actually, elbow-deep in half-tubes and tubes splayed open at the ends, and tubes coaxed open with needle-nose pliers. The mineral reek and vegetal reek from these paints necessitated full days of airing out the apartment. The solvents and extenders smelled of clove cigarettes smoked indoors. I left canvases to dry outside, where they collected tree fluff and tiny, delicate dead bugs. My images were neither hurt nor helped by these environmental additions. I said I was paying down student loan debt, and would practice brand loyalty when I was solvent again. Victoria said, “Oh, but you really should.” I thought to myself, perhaps for the first time, Why did my brother befriend this orphan?

“I really should,” I say to myself, most days on my drive. Wasn't there a performance art piece—a woman, saying 1,000 things she should do, into a tape-recorder? “I really should recycle. I really should call my mother. I really should pay my parking tickets.” I really should honor ritual and superstition, and my gut instincts. I really should read what I buy or at least attend more assiduously to reviews, so as to refrain from buying disappointments. I really should do my part to cut back on carbon emissions, clean the seas, and vote. Everything is in reach. The way Victoria said it—breezy, condescending, hopeful—is the way I hear most advice, particularly the advice I give myself: spoken in the tones of unconvincing conviction. I drank much less then (somehow), still I had a bottle of Bombay Sapphire at hand (somehow), and peered at Victoria and A.J. through its blue glass, tripling their blue-hued bodies. 

Much later I wrote a play where a character unhappy in love does the same thing. In the stage directions, the young man “goes to the wine cooler, pulls out a beautiful champagne magnum, studies it, puts it back and takes out another. Every bottle dazzles his countenance with jewel-like light—emerald and sapphire; amethyst and ruby; garnet and topaz lights, they sparkle across his bare chest and face as he inspects the bottles. He decides on a blue bottle of Prosecco, lavishly foiled, and brings it to his eyes like binoculars and for a moment considers his open hand, his surroundings, even his audience through the dark blue glass, and the stage glows beautifully blue, too. With great delicacy he unwraps and unwires the Prosecco, and uncorks it in a kitchen towel, and pours himself a glass. He drinks alone, picking at his phone, while the stage goes dark.” It was well past midnight in the second act. The kitchen was empty.

i have so much angel halo fodder to farm but its magna fes so now is the best time to do it anyways i’m gunna try and 5* eahta today/tomorrow/at least before 25th is a reasonable goal. i need to max 11 more silver relics so 11 lazuline vessels for that + it takes 745990 exp (approximately ~25 lazuline vessels) to go from lv 1 to 150 (but I might be able to do it in less with journey drop boosts when using them since it seems to say that journey drop boosts and such only have no effect on the exp gain when putting weapons into the reserve and not the act of using the vessel on a item and vessels are also special considering unlike other exp upgrader items they can have a chance of grand success and its double jour drops right now so might as well) then other than that all i need are 6 more silver centrums, 4 of which i can get from just hosting the raid twice today (if i somehow get blessed i can get all six if i can get them to drop from the share chest both times) (otherwise getting 8 more heavenly horns from just joining raids to get 10 to trade for the other 2 centrums will be easy) (i have the two peacemaker stars for the two hosts) (i then proceeded to ramble too long so the rest is under the cut. ii keep writing shit out tat’s too long and then just deleting everything and never posing my rambling anymore but like fuck it at this point im keeping this)

and that’s it, i already did the awakening step on all 10 katanas yesterday which was the most painful step bc need 500 white dragon scales will always be the worst step in my opinions, which is why i spent yesterday getting to like 438 yesterday using the campaign exclusive quest (bc the drop rate for scales on that quest is surprisingly amazing considering the low ap cost even after you’ve done it 30 times) (but i ended up quitting 438 and then proceeded to buy the remaining 62 with cerulean stone bc i have a bunch still and tbh the only thing worth spending cerulean stones on are white dragon scales or shit like translucent silk, broken teacup, coverging rays, etc bc the drop rate for those is stupid, and i guess technically i’m going to need those 50 jumbo best bones when i get to the 5* part of death, but i still have more than enough stones if i wanted to buy all 50 of those drops and i’ll defiantly be getting even more after the roulette starts so i’m not even concerned, bc yeah i got the sunlight stone now for death but i’m still pretty damn far from deal w/death, though maybe not as far as i think if i just remember to host my go and primarch raids for a couple days, wow yeah actually im stupidly closer than i thought bc im only 12 celus fragments from all 30 i need, the only annoying issue in the last step is going to be taking the time to farm the 10 primeval horns bc sometimes they don’t drop when you join proto hl, i know its guaranteed from share i’m just always weary about hosting that raid since it is 18-man elixir limited and i can’t solo it, and have had a time in the past were i was only joined by people leaching and it sucks when only you and like 1 other person contribute. so i always feel better join one bc i can make a decent contribution (and even like sort of mvp race or usually more vice mvp race for like 2nd or 3rd) (okay one time i joined a proto baha hl raid that was between like 70~60% bc it was on earth and 8 ppl already, and upon joining discovered like most of them had jumped ship, and the log was dead and was like well fuck, but started raiding anyways, and trying to send back up requests anyways, ended up getting some momentum, painfully got it always through to 50% dark by my self (kind of annoyed i took my light grid with my spheric harp bc i thought it was going to be an instance were it would get to 50% super fast so the off element wouldn’t matter and not that everyone but host had retreated) and then like around ~45% another person finally joined and me and this one other person destroyed the rest of the boss in like a minute, that was one of like 4 or 5 times i’ve mvp’d proto baha hl upon joining. tbh i kinda wish i knew what the host was doing, like if they were sitting there watching, was afk, or had like left the raid page to do other things. like if they were just hoping someone would come in and beat it for them, or had sorta given up but didnt want to fully end the raid just incase, look okay i just felt fucking good thinking i helped out a lower rank player get through a hl raid that they were abandoned on by several other players who appeared to have either not being strong enough, or joined saw the damage and jumped ship bc it looked like it was going to fail. though if i remember correctly the time limit was pretty far gone so that’s probably also why no one was joining, i was just a dumb fuck who didn’t look at the time before i joined, then realized, and then just fucking felt bad and was like well fuck it lets see how far i can go by myself bc clearly everyone else is dead and i don’t have anything to lose and im not stoping anyone else from potentially saving this bc there’s still like 7 slots open that anyone can join at any time...) anyways the last thing i wanted to say was i remember i was like a little peeved when they announced everyone who finished chapter 4.5 in the demon slayer collab would get kengo for free bc FARMING FOR KENGO AROUND THE TIME IT CAME OUT HURT BC I HADN’T BEEN HL FOR VERY LONG SO IT TOOK A LOT OF EFFORT, esp like bc extra II class suck worse than row iv bc you have to make the ccw element change for every goddamn class. but i was glad they compensated us with materials and i was mostly just glad for the extra silver centrums and steel brick (even tho i just realized i have fucking 50 steel bricks where the fuck did those come from like i don’t remember having so many), but i remember thinking to myself like oh wow thank 40 samurai distinctions, thats so useful, wow, what am i going to do make another murakumo and unsigned kaneshige?? i think im good. guess those will sit there forever... and then a couple days ago when i started thinking about finishing eahta up since i literally finished farming the demon slayer event the day after the second half was unlocked (when u can just auto extreme+ with ur fire team u don’t have to do shit, i got all the items i wanted and after than even played to get the 200 battle trophy for the heck of it. i only wanted the tickets, ring, dama crystals, steel, summon unlock mats just ‘cause those spellbooks, skill jewels, the fire urns bc i know they’re farmable but they’re annoying and i am low on fire urns, and then i was like i guess the summon since it’s a 1 copy only thing and can’t be reduced even though i’ll literally never use it bc i have gabriel and gabriel has a sub aura, i guess maybe it could be potentially useful for prometheus solo’ing because of the 1 turn debuff resistance, but the times i did solo prometheus i never had problems running out of veils or clears and tbh garnet carbuncle has a shorter cooldown and again i’ve got lily and gabriel already (and 5* lucifer now) so like i’d much rather have my four summon slots for that be gabe, moon ssr, luci, garnet carbuncle. (heck i don’t even take extra damage cuts for the wilnas trial vane, lily, gabriel, and 5* feower’s gravity and delaying the everloving shit out of wilnas is enough for me, though i’ve never done the raid so maybe it would be helpful there.) anyways then i just spend the rest of the event drops on half elixers, and back to what i was saying i was thinking about finishing eahta and looking at all the mats i need and then remember oh yeah i need 30 class distinctions don’t i? which ones do i need for eahta??? oH THAT’S RIGHT. Majority of my followers know what Wakfu is, but not all know about the game: how many wounds it left in my heart, and everyone else’s. This post isn’t gonna be precisely explaining the wrongs that Wakfu did, I just wanted to mention that, in aftermath, it was a disaster of a game that left its most loyal players hurt, disappointed and immensely sad. I still keep meeting people who love this franchise, but can’t stand the game anymore since it’s.. Changed too much and didn’t stay enjoyable, to say mildly. I’m surrounded by, literally, traumatized veterans who look back at the good old days and shed tears. And I’ve been talking a lot about GW2 recently, not for no reason.

I want you to heal, just like I did. I mean.. I’m still hurt over Wakfu and I’ll stay this way forever, but I found a game where you can feel safe, loved, cared about. Devs in GW2 are humans who talk to us, who put smileys and memes in their posts, who hang out on reddit and ingame. This’s one of the major and striking differences between Wakfu and GW2. I’m still genuinely stunned by my own experience with customer support, I had a few troubles during my 1.5 years in GW2 and the response was not only fast and effective, it was HUMAN AND CUTE. I’m still not over it. Now that I’ve been invited to be a creative partner.. I’m still not over it too. They shower their regular players and content creators in gentle attention and kindness. I cry. During the 5+ years of being the most active and visible artist in Wakfu fandom, literally promoting it with thousands of drawings, I’ve never got a tiniest bit of official recognition. Not even a single placement on official media. When I took part in contests, I never won. Overall it’s been a one-way street. During my first 1.5 years in GW2, I’ve been noticed, picked up by the team, pampered and spoiled to the point of barely believing it’s true. That’s my personal experience, but it should indicate Anet’s general attitude towards the players. They. Do. Care.

I just wanna try and convince more ex-Wakfu players to give GW2 a shot. The two games are different in the visual and core gameplay aspects, yes, transitioning from an isometric 2D turn-based to a 3D, real-time game was somewhat harsh, but boy, how glad I am that I did it.

There’s EVEN MORE TEXT, brace yourselves. :D In GW2, I found everything that I wish was in Wakfu.

GW2 is a true sandbox. You log in, you do whatever the fuck you want. Level your first (second, 12th, 33rd, 68th) char? Grind mobs and dungeons? NO. Run around, look for events, explore, literally everything you do and everywhere you go, gives xp. You can level via crafting! Which, btw, is relevant throughout the entire game, unlike in Wakfu.

You do have dungeons of two kinds, and you CAN farm them if you want, but it’s your deliberate decision. There ARE farms in GW2, but they’re fun, if you’re not trying to get a legendary weapon in a month. I personally like running around with a bunch of random people who are there to FARM events in a specific map, but that happens once every two months.

Said legendary weapons ARE hard to get and yes, they can get you burnt out in no time if you don’t have a concept of a “long term goal”. Leggies are a prestige item, and, just like other prestige items (auras, specific minis, skins, etc), they’re meant to be your ultimate show-off item. People see you and know that you’ve been through.. A lot. BUT. Your hard-earned prestige item is to stay prestige. I assume you know relics in Wakfu? Then you must know what happened to them after a few years.

There’s no devaluing in GW2. Your trophies stay relevant and rare. Your prizes, your exclusive titles, skins, etc stay exclusive. You aren’t losing half of your wealth just because the devs decided to revamp ALL GEAR FOR THE THIRD TIME.

Speaking of the gear, the orange set you get at 80, is endgame gear. GW2 is 5 years old, so that orange gear is. People crafted it on the release and.. It stayed endgame. Yes, there’s also pink gear, which ~5% better than orange and is only needed if you do high lvl fractals or are min-maxing in raids. If you’re casual or just starting, you don’t even have to think about it. But once you craft your set, it stays relevant forever. People’s effort is never shoved up their asses.

There’s no constant carrot-on-a-stick gear upgrades. Level cap is 80 since release and will stay so. The game promotes safety and stability, that’s what attracted me. You take a 2 years break? No problem, you log in and go play. Nothing has lost its value, you don’t feel inferior, you don’t need to catch up to play with your friends.

Which reminded me: there’s a wonderfully done level downscale system. You’re a lvl 80 in a lvl 16 zone? Your stats are auto-adapted so the enemies you fought as a noob are still dangerous, and your reward (xp/gold/materials) is adapted to your true lvl. You go and play anywhere you want, and get fair rewards.

Crafting materials of all levels are also demanded and relevant. Oh yeah, you can run around for hours just gathering wood/ore, familiar to Wakfu players? It’s nice and relaxing until you meet another player. Well, in GW2 all gathering nodes are NOT shared. You see a tree? It’s your tree. That dude who runs up to it won’t steal it from you.

Oh also there’s no kill steal! Which is big, imo. You’re encouraged to play together, to help people kill stuff, to contribute to any event you see around, since everyone gets rewarded equally.

Legendary stability of GW2 servers. Lemme just say: there’s no weekly maintenance. There is. No. Downtime. Even on the big update days, you can download and play pretty safely. If there’s a hotfix, the game KINDLY WARNS YOU that you need to update and you have TWO FLIPPING HOURS to do so. Before you did that, you still can play, finish whatever you were up to.

Everything revolves around player’s happiness and convenience. There are constant quality-of-life updates. Your bags are full of crap? Here, salvage it into materials with two clicks, then deposit into your bank with two clicks (from anywhere in the world), then compact the rest of your shit. Yeah, with two clicks. x’D

There’s wonderful Fashion Wars. The game offers so much customization, and it’s taken so seriously, that it’s one of the endgame aspects. There’s 30000+ achievement points to earn, which are mostly fun and make you go out of your usual way. Dailies? You get 10 points and 2 gold for doing 3 easy tasks that take ~15 minutes.

There’s LORE. There’s fun little interactions all over the world. You just did an event? Stay here and listen, probably npcs will say/do something and start another event, logically following the previous one. The world lives and breathes. You can just walk around and observe. You’ll learn so much. And of course, there’s always a good cause to laugh. Dialogues/reactions are just hilarious sometimes.

Regarding the lore: there’s a so-called personal story which accompanies you up to lvl 80, then there’s “living world”, smaller events and single maps being rolled out every once in a while - so far there’s 2 seasons available, and 1 being “historical”, not playable anymore. In that season, they fucking crushed the main capital city. It changed forever. It was an epic event, which I missed, but watched people’s videos later. Then season 2, then HoT, then season 3, and now we’re waiting for PoF, second expansion. The updates have picked a nice pace and are frequent now.

There’s just so much to do. Just go, dive into the world and drown forever. :3c And meet me on the bottom. x’DD

GW2 feels different from Wakfu, but I found similarities for myself. It’s a sandbox after all, and later endgame has a lot of strategy. GW2 is never tank-and-spank. You just, literally, can’t facetank shit here. You gotta use your skills wisely, time your dodges, play with traits/passives until it all flows together. You’ve got a HUGE BUILD FREEDOM. There’s 9 classes, each having at least 3 defined roles, with more variations. You don’t just go ranger (oh archer it’s like a cra rite??) and do pew pew from max distance. Well, yes, you have a bow and can pew pew.. Or you can be a melee fighter, you can be a full blown healer/support.. As a ranger, yes.

I’ll be wrapping up now, I swear. GW2 is true f2p. Which of course does have a few restrictions (can’t trade or use map-chat), but you can get to 80, gear up and explore to your heart’s content before you decide to pay. I personally played for 5 months, every day, before I bought HoT.

Why’d you buy an expansion? More story, more maps, new class traits, gliding in HoT and mounts in PoF. The expansion and living world content has been constantly improving, visually, mechanically and lore/writing-wise.

Other than that, there’s a gemstore offering cosmetic and convenience items (gems can be bought for cash OR ingame gold). There are infamous rng boxes, but none of those are p2w. GW2 is oriented at the western consumer, which means, yeah, they know that we hate p2w and they’ll never do that to us.

*breathes out* I had to get that off my chest. I wanna talk about GW2 forever, but it’s exhausting to do one-on-one. :P Hopefully someone’s still reading this!

Same thing more or less happened to me, but I wanted to add that the noname slaver not only couldn't be sold, but wouldn't die/leave no matter how many disastrous suicide missions i sent them on. keep being awesome.

Can I suggest some ideas that seems not hard to implement, but can make this great game more intresting? 1)Let any number of slaves be sent for sale with an escort of 2 slavers 2)Make sale opportunities in all cities (same as City), may be with different demands in race, skills and payment 3)Remake both quests in Rose for one rare and high risk hunt for an exclusive slave (same as Wedding Crashers). I’ll be glad to describe these ideas in more details if you are interested in. Thank you.

Ideas are easy, actual implementation can be surprisingly hard not to mention time consuming. There will be more ways to dispose of slaves, in greater numbers and the opportunities are going to become more lenient which should hopefully help out with that. 

Anonymous: After loading the game I cant make any assignment on the world, only go for personal assignments from the camp. Loaded the game properly. When I rightclick my character the only avaliable comamnds are : Enc. stores x3, Glossary, Stats.

Please make sure you are using the correct version of RAGS, and that you did not save a game state that you should not have saved in as per the message at the start of the game. Those would be my first two guesses for causes anyway.

Anonymous: Little bug report. Then you change clothes, changed clothes come back with every stat = 0.

Anonymous: On 7032: I'd call this more of a feature than a bug, but I think that if you select the elf shadowcaster start, then go back and choose a different start (high elf sentinel in my case), even going with full customization, you get Osawa Megumi for free.

Currently seconds and spiritual leaders if you select one refuse to leave their role so they only way to get a new one is to lose them. There will be a way round this and that’s coming with the reputation system. 

xcomcommander12: Are missions not supposed to go into the negatives? Because on Corruption changing places I had a 102% chance of success and a -5% failure chance. Also I found an interesting mission when scavenging in the dreadsea coast area on a critical success, is it possible to free my slaver?

They shouldn’t no. Need to sort that for the next update. If you lost one getting that crit there’s not currently away to get a lost slaver back, but there will be when I do the events system. 

If you’re talking about the follow up assignment and what happens to a slaver on a success the only way is to lose the lamia as that should free the slaver. Will be some other ways later when I come back to that.

Hard Turn into the Wind.

A lot has changed since the last time I logged into tumblr.  I am happily married, moved across the country, am casually unemployed during the pandemic, and become an adamant Pokemon Go player.

This space will remain a curation of my favorite things as it always has.  Just with a new idea of delivery for more video game talk, but I would like to continue to share my finds in fashion, architecture, automobiles and art.

I started playing Pokemon Go on July 6, 2016, everyone remembers when this game was released because of the social phenomenon that occurred.  Since then the game has changed a lot, I have a tendency to collect so my original meta in the game was to catch ‘em all.

Pokemon Red was the first game I ever found on my own and completed as a kid on my PC using a gameboy emulator in 1999.  I chose Bulbasaur and so began a relationship that would be on and off for another twenty years.  After Red, I didn’t play a Pokemon title for 10 years until Pokemon Pearl on the Nintendo DS.  This introduced friend codes and the ability to trade using the internet.  My DS was stolen from my desk at my job, I still have the game cartridge but no interest in buying a new DS.  Six years later Pokemon Go is released and I begin my journey to fill out the Pokedex in this game.

At the moment I have caught 570 different Pokemon, all on the same Pokedex that is safe on the cloud.  With the ongoing pandemic I think it will be a long time until I have the opportunity to travel for regional exclusives.  For now I enjoy shiny hunting, battling Team Go Rocket and occasionally raiding.

Okay, wow, I have taken a HUUUUGE break from this because, y’know, depression sucks major ass and all. However, I’ve been able to do some thinking about this setting and mostly it doesn’t make a LOT of sense.

The major idea behind this world evolved from what I stated earlier to that it’s made up of fragments of shattered or dead worlds (think Traverse Town from Kingdom Hearts but if no one remembered the words they were from in any way). I think that’s a neat way to build a world (and I decided on this structure because one of my friends dissed the Warforged and I decided, “you know what, screw you, I love these robots, they’re in my world now because you’re a dick about them”). I’m still doing the whole, “this is a young, new world,” thing, this just makes the presence of ruins and dungeons and metal easier to explain, and more believable than, “Some dick of a wizard did it.” Trouble is, I also wanted to have the standard, “90% of societies are divided amoung racial lines,” thing that other D&D settings did. Elven empire, Dwarven kingdoms, Orc clans, etc. 

The only exception I had for this was “The Scales,” an archipelago in the South Eastern sea (which only makes sense from an authorial standpoint because I’ve drawn this world’s Prime Meridian and the fictional societies I’m creating haven’t quite caught onto that yet). The Scales was (and is going to continue to be because I like it and will not give it up yet) an empire ruled by dragons with a strict social hierarchy based on what race is closer to dragons. Dragons at the top, Dragonborn below them, Kobolds below THEM, and Lizardfolk at the bottom, with Half-Dragons being a totally separate group within society. 

The central society of the world was going to be (and still will be because I am a SUCKER for hubworlds) the Dwarven society of Volkurin. A lone volcano in the middle of the ocean, rendered magically inert, then hollowed out and expanded by the dwarves. The surface is all docks and warehouses, and inside was originally going to be a great marketplace. I came to the understanding that capitalism doesn’t make a lot of sense in a new world, so my natural loathing of capitalism now has an excuse to kick it out of the world entirely. Volkurin is now a society of miners. They arrived to the volcanic island via raft, and they have traded minerals and ores with the other societies for food and lumber and cloth. This is also where the mage college is located because THESE dwarves are terramancers and are NOT exclusively divine casters. They do have them, it’s just not the majority.

The other societies (except the scales) are now, like Volkurin, built around their resources, what was the Elven kingdom is now centered around logging (which druids can make sustainable) and fruit cultivation. The people of the plains (who were going to be Orc settlements and Human raiders) are now built around farming, both vegetable and livestock (albeit rudimentary). The societies in the more frozen lands are built around hunting. Every society has things the others (except the scales) need, and most are willing to cooperate, to an extent, to get it. There are still raiding bandits and the like, but they’re no longer racially motivated (still gonna be more Human than Orcish though).

I’ve still got a LOT of thinking to go on this world, but I think it’s a lot more sensible now than it was.

A Captive State

Development

In December 2016, four months leading to the development of To The Extinction, Square Enix and WB Games began to develop the video game adapation of Tom Hoffman's Beneath a Captive State. In February 2017, Annapurna Interactive won their development rights for A Captive State and To The Extinction. By that month, Annapuna Interactive had reportedly stealing over $500,000 during the development of A Captive State.

In June 2017, Square Enix and Annapurna Interactive unveils the 60 second teaser trailer of A Captive State, following the gameplay reveal of To The Extinction at E3 2017.

By May 2018, Square Enix released their first official trailer of A Captive State and ensured its first gameplay footage at E3 2018. The trailer features Killing Joke's "Pandemonium". The first gameplay footage shows the raid in Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center, while one of the many playable characters, Brian "Jurgis" McPhee, attempts to escape the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center alongside his friends Rafe and Frank. The gameplay footage received widespread attention, but the mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, said A Captive State depicts the city of Chicago in a war between the alien race and the US military, FBI and the Chicago Police Department. The game is yet to be banned in Chicago, due to the depiction of its city torn apart in the brink of an alien invasion, but the US military, FBI and the Chicago Police Department are also depicted as the major antagonists. Kody Theo, Vic Kamanga, EJ Wilkes, and Jared McKenna, who played Rula, Rafe, Gabe, and Jurgis in A Captive State, said the game was look similarly with Grand Theft Auto 5, Fallout 4, Red Dead Redemption 2, and InFamous: Second Son. In May 2017, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross began to making the original score of A Captive State, but it contains many elements of the late 1980s to early 1990s electronic music. Most of the radio stations in A Captive State had many lore friendly and licensed songs from the 1970s through the 1990s, supported more than 500 songs available. Release and marketing

On June 25, 2018, Square Enix and WB Games dates A Captive State for February 1, 2019 release. However, by November 27, 2018, the game was shifted for many weeks to January 18, 2019, to avoid competing with Capcom's Resident Evil 2 remake and Microsoft Studios's Crackdown 3. In December 2018, Vive Studios teaming up with Square Enix and WB Games for the upcoming VR version of A Captive State. On 15 December 2018, Funko announced the Funko Pop and Mystery Minis based on the characters of A Captive State, these including; Gabe Conway, Rafe Conway, Rula McPhee, Jurgis McPhee, Carrie Conway, Danny Howells, Ellison, The Disciple, Legion Horde, US Marine, Chicago PD officer, FBI agent, Alan Rittenhouse, Agent Stuart Kermode, Colonel Charles Levitt, The Illusive Woman, and The Illusive Man. On 23 December 2018, Square Enix announced the prequel to A Captive State, called Beyond Omission: The Tale of Jurgis McPhee and Rafe Conway, an adventure game that let's you play as Jurgis and Rafe in Chicago during the years 1989 and 1990, and it will exclusively availaible through Playstation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, iOS and Android devices on 1 February 2019. Beyond Omission is also being work into the graphic novel by Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen (who had previously adapted A Captive State graphic novel in 2018)

Did You Know?

In the 2018 video game To The Extinction, when the flashback took place in 1975, a group of British soldiers discovers the remains of the Legion Horde in Orkney islands. Almost 15 years later, they re-emerged from the remains of the nuclear radioactivity. The gameplay shows Miles Keller and Alice Brennan fights off against the Legion Horde, while discovering the alien artifacts around Grain Earth House in Orkney. These later mentioned in A Captive State, in Rula's journal.
