They've been super helpful! I also used your song name formatting to add English/romanized text to the tracks I ripped, 'cause it's been uh. The only source I could find that wasn't missing anything and was consistent about how things were romanized. ^^' (Animelyrics my beloved, but alas it doesn't have instrumental tracks/names. The wiki's just outright missing some stuff. And VGMDB has all the albums and when they were released and credits and stuff, but some albums are missing track title translations.)

Aaah, I feel that (hyperfixation vs. ADHD executive dysfunction). I watched YYH back when it was airing on Toonami but only recently finished watching it because they stopped airing it in the middle of the Dark Tournament...and with how much I drew them in high school (plus their relatively simple designs), I think Hiei and Kurama are some of the only characters I can draw from memory with full accuracy even after like, a DECADE of not. But I'm apparently currently possessed by the spirit of knitting (and designing patterns?? which is new for me), so even though I have ideas for some cool things I'd like to draw of them, I just...haven't. Executive dysfunction is such a pain in the ass. D: (I do have my ripped YYH playlist going while I work, though, so. There is that, plus the thinking about it frequently. XD)

Your frame collection sideblog is really rad, too! It's great to be able to just sit and study frames that are hard to land on while scrubbing through video. So many neat little details that are hard to catch, with how fast they can fly by! (Although, even looking at the frame collection for the intro, I still can't quite put my finger on what it is about Kurama's running animations that's just...always so uniquely stunning. Especially in side profile? It's like...there's a specific focus he's got or something that just looks cool. But it's fun to get such a good look at Hiei's claws, too. >:D) For the dialogue transcripts, would it not work to make another YYH sideblog? I dunno if the scripts might be too long for tumblr's word limit per post, but if it's close/half-ish you could maybe break it up? Or at least post a key chunk of script per episode, and then link to the full episode text elsewhere? (I dunno what the current landscape is for making fansites, but that'd also be a great option, if it's reasonable to make and manage them?)

Here's the Super Dance Mix skit translation! (Plus the reblog I did of OP's post, since they had changed their username since first sharing it...which I can go edit to credit/tag you in since I linked your youtube channel, if you'd like!) I had already gleaned that the DJ Time tracks were clearly HILARIOUS. (Hiei cackling so often, and going "nya~"?! Kurama clearly doing his damnedest to be a good show host, despite the utter chaos?? Stunning, love it.) But having the translation make the hilarity even more clear, like the utterly brilliant comedic timing of that one singular dramatic key click. Also that Hiei apparently has a propensity (at least when written by Shigeru Chiba in these CD dramas?) for challenging people...by questioning whether they know the difference between two similar-sounding words? He did it in the first Warrior's Hunger skit, too. And of course, Kurama's always the one to answer. XD (Though Hiei misinterprets some similar-sounding words in some of the DJ Time tracks, so it's a wonder that his challenge format never comes back to bite him in the ass...)

So I figured I'd peek at your blog in case you had more shiny stuff to see, & noticed you encourage folks tag you in Kurama & Hiei stuff. yu yu hakusho is a huuuge hyperfixation of mine, but my adhd has been making me struggle with focusing on doing the creative stuff i wanna do (like drawing and writing), so ive been instead doing a shit ton of other things revolving around yyh- like collecting the music and making the yu yu jukebox channel, ripping frames to post and organize them on my sideblog @reikai-records , and ive also been working on making a dialogue transcript for the dub (still unsure where to put it online when im done with that tho, atm i just have it on google docs, not too far on it)!

Blog Updates:

All the writing stuff is updated, ready to go, and is queued up for the next five weeks. That means I can focus on other things for a while!

For the main chunk of the blog, I would like to do the following:

Get the sitting asks done ASAP with art (if possible)

Get back to making Revenant art because I need to get my mojo back

On this note, I would like to try taking art requests (as long as they’re not too complicated). I know my art isn’t the greatest possible thing in the world, but the more I practice the better I’ll get, and... I really want to get better.

Would officially opening art requests be a decent idea? Or is this a prime way to exhaust myself during my five weeks off my main project? I’m not exactly sure how many people would get in on it, but it’s something I’ve wanted to do in order to expand my horizons a bit. At the same time I wouldn’t want to drown myself in requests and feel guilty for being unable to complete them all in a timely manner.

Also I wanted to do short writing request too for fun, just Revenant stuff with more flexibility than my main project. Would anyone be interested in writing requests? I dunno I figured it could be fun and really help me brainstorm a bit.

Fanfic Updates:

Oh hey, so if you’re here you probably saw the most recent part was posted. That’s the second to last chapter, and after that I have three more lost chapters lined up, meaning every Wednesday for the next five weeks [including this week] (bar me getting hit by a bus) I will have something to post. Yay!

Also, Just a Volunteer (Book #1) has been completely proofread, fixed, updated, and the final version is available on AO3 with all edits/fixes! Yay!

So... that wraps up the first book. It ends with lots of questions, pretty open ended, but it would be wrapped up enough that if someone wanted to find a break to read something else, it’s a good place to break.

After that’s done, the “The Lost Files” as I’m calling it (for now, may change the name to be more fun than that, feel free to leave suggestions) will drop one at a time. These differ from the main story in multiple ways:

They focus on different/new characters I’m adding to the fray

They are not in 2nd person POV (you/your)

They are in 3rd person POV (he/her/they)

They mostly avoid the Reader or Y/N character and focus on events she could not or did not see

They fill in the gaps and set up the insanity I want to write for book #2

I am not shooting for a 10K word per chapter ideal, it’s just however long it is.

I am very excited for these because I really just had fun with them. To give you an idea of what’s coming up:

There will be more than those, but for now those are all written already.

As for Book #2, I am feeling like migrating completely over to AO3 for posting it (obviously including links on Tumblr as well)... I wanted people’s opinion:

Is there any reason you prefer to read on Tumblr rather than AO3?

You may wonder why I’d want to migrate off of Tumblr. On my side, it’s limiting to have to constrain myself to 250 paragraphs and messes with my formatting at times. I have also had people point out that the mobile app crashes and makes them lose their place or lose my blog entirely (if they hadn’t followed it), so... ack. Should I keep trying to post to Tumblr? Or if it exceeds 250 paragraphs just post a link?

But yeah, also if you didn’t read above, I’m considering doing short form writing requests. I’m guessing my fic readers would be the most interested in that, so what do you all think of that?

About a week ago I finally finished bookbinding @airdeari‘s beautiful Zero Escape fic The First Nonary Game. It took about a month (between all the waiting for glue to dry and also several days each week when I was unable to work on it), and was so much fun! It’s so satisfying to just... hold this book in my hands. 

Details about how I made it, along with additional photos (and commentary) below the cut.

So I came across this post on Tumblr, which immediately inspired me to try bookbinding myself. I spent a few days watching so many tutorials from the youtube channel linked in the post (I’ll link the specific tutorials I used in this post), and googling how to actually manage to print pages so they form proper signatures, because the inbuilt booklet creator in Word doesn’t exist in my Word apparently so that’s fun.

Anyway, once I started, I asked @airdeari for permission to print and bind his fic, and he immediately said yes, so that was good. Then I spent a good couple of days copying the entire fic into a Word document, and fiddling with formatting so it would look like an actual book (section breaks, page numbers, headers with the fic title on the left page and chapter title on the right page (this took ages to work and I kept on stuffing it up), and making sure things just... looked nice. I added in the art After The War that @keycrash created specifically for the fic (third pic above), and an “afterword” containing credit and links and the author’s notes from AO3 (because even if I’m the only one who will ever see it, it still feels weird to not add the credit stuff in so it’s there).

I then saved the document as a PDF, and used CheapImposter to correctly shuffle (impose, hence “imposter”) the pages so when folded into signatures, each page would be in the correct order. This program was the first free one I could find, and was great because you could specify the number of sheets you want per signature, rather than stuck with a default. I chose to have 11 signatures of 6 sheets of paper, since that was the amount that would have the least blank pages and the end of the book. The file was 261 pages, so with two pages per side, and two sides per sheet, you divide the number of pages by 4 to get 66 sheets of paper

I then printed. There was only one (1) paper jam in the process, which was great. Unfortunately, I realised after I printed that one of the headers for one chapter was wrong (I hadn’t properly disconnected the two chapters), but fortunately that only involved reprinting 4 sheets of paper.

I used the following tutorials to make the books: DIY Textblock, a general “how to make a textblock” tutorial; DIY Kettle Stitch, a specific look at the stitching for a textblock, since the first tutorial doesn’t focus on this; DIY Book Cloth, since I chose to use fabric for my cover; and DIY Hardcover Book, how to put all those pieces together.

So then I started folding all the signatures. I was watching so much Brooklyn Nine-Nine during both the folding and stitching sections, since it was repetitive actions I didn’t need to concentrate on that lasted hours.

It was at this point that I sliced each signature one by one to make the end smoother and less pointy. In future I recommend not doing it at this point - wait until the very end. Instead, move straight onto stitching. 

I don’t have any photos of the stitching portion, since my phone died the morning I started the stitching, and I wasn’t able to replace it until after all the stitching was done. In fact, originally all the photos from before the stitching were lost too. It was only about two days ago that magically the My Photo Stream thing kicked in and brought back all the photos - if it had worked two weeks earlier I would’ve had more. As it is, all photos from September to January are gone forever, unfortunately. But that’s another discussion entirely.

The above is the first book photo on my new phone, so as you can see, all the stitching was completed, the spine was glued, and the purple paper attached. I couldn’t buy two A4 sheets, so instead I had to buy one A3 sheet and cut it in half. Which was difficult cycling home from the city with an A3 sheet that didn’t fit in my bag on account of being A3 and not A4, but oh well.

I don’t have a book press, so I used a pile of DND books and my brother’s weights instead, as shown below.

I then had to re-slice the book after this point bc my first go wasn’t even, on account of slicing each signature separately. Next time definitely I’ll just do it at the end like this. I then also sanded it to make it smoother. It’s still not perfect, but it’s something that’ll take practice and patience so.

Next I made the book cloth, which involves using appliqué sheets to combine cotton fabric and tissue paper. But first I want to talk about the fabric I chose for the cover, because I’m quite proud of it. I spent ages wandering around the shop, trying to find something that fit the feel of the book. Spoilers for the content of the fic if you haven’t read it yet, and also for the source material (999/Zero Escape). I was thinking about some sort of blue swirl thing, because of the Gigantic sinking. I found that, but hesitated because it didn’t fully fit, and my favourite colour is blue so I always pick blue. I also considered flames/fire because of the incinerator thing, but couldn’t find any. I can’t remember if I just couldn’t find any four leaf clover fabric, or if I’ve just since thought about that as a cover. But instead I chose the butterflies below. They fit in several subtle ways that I’m proud of. The colours of blue and pink(/red) matching the receiver and transmitter coding all throughout 999, as well as the moments of purple as well (I don’t think I need to get into that, I’m sure it was analysed to hell and back when the game first came out). The butterflies also point towards the butterfly effect, and in turn the different timelines present in the series. So together it just works. /spoilers over

It’s also just a pretty fabric.

Now the making of the book cloth. I had to make it twice, because I was too impatient the first time, so the iron was too hot and it steamed, which wrinkled and warped the tissue paper, so the fabric was all wrinkly too. The second time took ages and was a worse quality appliqué sheet, but worked well enough anyway.

And then I cut the book board to size, using the measurements from the tutorial video. I’ll repeat them here: front and back cover: width = width of textblock minus 3mm, and height = height of textblock plus 6mm, and spine width = width of textblock spine, spine height = same height as covers

I then glued the board onto the book cloth, and put it under the book press. The dnd books are not large enough to cover the whole thing, and also I really wanted the board to stay flat and not curl, so I grabbed way more dnd books and way more of my brother’s weights. I also accidentally started putting the glue on the wrong side of the board (bc one side is smooth and the other is rough), hence the colour difference as well.

The corners were cut and folded and glued over...

And then the textblock was glued in, and put in my book press for a whole weekend. I added a sheet of paper to absorb the glue so the pages wouldn’t become wrinkly, but instead the sheet I added was fine and every other page in the book is wrinkly. So I dunno what happened there. After the weekend I took it out and looked at it, and then put it back for another week to be sure.

And then the complete book is shown at the top of the post!

As I was starting I was talking a lot about it, like about the process I had to go through, or how I was going to obtain what I needed, etc. Mum asked if she could read the story. I froze, like a deer in the headlights... because this is a fanfic. She saw my fear and immediately backed down, explaining she only wanted to read it because if the story was that important to me that I was going to literally turn it into a book, she wanted to read it to yknow like know me better or something? Which makes sense. And when I got over my initial reaction, and remembered that indeed it was technically my dad who introduced me to fanfic, and thought about it more, I said okay. Because since the fic is technically a prequel to the first game, and most of the characters are technically OC’s (like, from the first game we know that all eighteen children must exist, but most of them don’t have names or anything so they are effectively OC’s), then knowledge of source material isn’t strictly necessary. This fic can probably be enjoyed on its own. I mean I’ll probably have to explain the concept of morphogenetic fields, and the last four chapters might not make sense? But I’m okay for my mum to read it. So when she’s less busy at work I’m going to download the epub onto her phone for her - we’ll see how it goes.

Anyway, this fic is a masterpiece, extremely well written and I highly recommend it. As said, most of the characters are effectively OC’s, and yet they are all given such rich histories and personalities. All of them have access to the morphogenetic field, so I’m just so glad that @airdeari​ explores nine unique relationships with the field - nine unique sibling dynamics, and esper powers and abilities. It’s just so good.

haneul: he loves the rain and he’ll spend it either under an umbrella or just sitting there in the rain just letting it wash away his thoughts and fears for a little bit

i used to have an oc named harley who was a living doll and i haha came to hate him because i made him around the same time i created haneul and i always loved haneul because i put a lot of effort into him and not much in harley and i got annoyed and jealous that back then everyone seemed to love harley more him. so i pretty much tossed him to the curve adfhsdkfjh

sorry harley but you were also hard to write because you were too sweet and cliche for me

I swear I don’t look that old yet..

Was walking along a park and had crossed the road and stopped there for a bit, until I heard some driver honk repeatedly like a madman.  Turned around, and saw this tiny little girl with this light pink dress and little bows in her hair running across the street by herself...

Driver turns to me angrily and demands if I’m her father, and implying how the hell I could let this adorable little girl run across the street by herself...

Okay cut.  I realize I forgot to shave today, and I’m wearing a buttoned up shirt and got a recent haircut, but this kind of made me a little sad.  Although I guess looking a bit older at my age isn’t too bad.  Anyway...

I was a bit in shock with everything but assured him I wasn’t her father but I’ll help look for her family.  The man looked in a hurry and relieved I wanted to help and drove off.

I sat down next to the little girl (she’s like two feet tall, heh) and she stared back completely unfazed.  I was a bit surprised she didn’t run away but then I thought, hell she ran across a street, I guess she’s a bold one.  There’s a bunch of Asians in my area, and this little girl looked a little Asian, but had light brown hair, not black -- I decided to try English first, and I’ll switch to Chinese if she didn’t understand me.

Tried asking her if she knew where her parents were, general information like that, and after a couple questions all I got was “Daddy left!”  While I sat there wondering what she possibly could have meant by that, she took a while longer and decided to finish her sentence: “Daddy left- to take a walk.”  Apparently I found out after a minute she meant she came to the park with someone else.  So I tried asking for mommy and she just shook her head.

At this point I decided it might be faster to just lead her back across the street and look for people in the park, as she came running from that direction.  So I lead her towards the crosswalk and suddenly she pointed with this big smile on her face.

I turn around to see two exasperated Asian grandparents pointing at the girl yelling “I FOUND HER” in mandarin.  Chucked a bit to myself as they berated her for running off on her own -- it seems like this was most definitely not the first time it’s happened.

They ran over and thanked me, explaining how they left for “just ONE minute” to use the restroom, and of course she disappeared.  Guess I was right though about her being part-Asian.

Anyway that was the first time I was mistaken for a dad haha.  She was adorable and full of curiosity in her eyes as well as a little mischief -- I hope she doesn’t run into too much trouble with all that boldness and doesn’t get hurt!
