Unpopular opinion: contemporary texting grammar is a better study in syntax-based rhetorical devices than any textbook can ever create.
#people tend to text as they speak#but there's no way to directly translate that in most languages#because writing is the language of record and speech is the language of communication and those two things are Different#but now that IM technology is ubiquitous people have adapted#and we adapt grammar to suit our speech#leaving out commas or using punctuation and capitalisation as we shouldn't or abbreviating when unimportant and expanding when important#hell even the typeos we leave in#we leave in typos when we type something fast beacuse the recipient will then know it was typed fast!#the best example is 1s in a string of !!!#even newlines (or new messages)#you can imagine how that would be said vocally#staccato#clipped#quick#or the period to end a message.#that took time to type.#so why type it?#because you wanted a pause... maybe an ominous one.#and especially ending with a ... to indicate expectation of a response (which was not previously the case)#I just think IM/texting language is vastly under recognised as a tool to teach syntax...
