Now it's been a long road for me to stan them i won't lie. I used to be in the dark but now I see!

Tempo: not only the best title track but also their best album. This song is divine, pure excellence of the gods. The intelligence that it got, the depth, the acappela part that even locals know about. EXO was just flexing their vocalists the whole song. I have no idea how SM put this masterpiece out and allow songs like Sticker, Savage and co out ??? What happened to quality ?

Obsession: how to spell perfection. Showed that Exo even with 5 members (+Sehun) could deliver excellence. And it's their strength always being exo no matter how many. Also the concept is out of this world like SM were truly in their bags with those evil vers.

Call Me Baby : EXO was at their lowest...fat, nasty and losing members left and right. Career in shambles. They came on this bitch mad as hell!!! Also we should start a petition to have them sing call me daddy as they should originally be!

Monster : Shawty you got it! There is hearing this song then listening to it with good headphones and it changes your life.

Overdose: OH SHE WANTS ME OH SHE GOT ME OH SHE HURTS ME KOREAN KOREAN SOMEONE CALL THE DOCTOR KOREAN KOREAN KOREAN OVERDOSE. Note on the mv: they were given 20 000 wons, a box and a dream

Love Shot: it took me some times to appreciate it at it's juste valeur but you know in moments of despairs you go back to listen to shit and get hit by pure talent. "People come and people go" even Shakespeare couldn't come up with that! Bonus: they looked extra fine and got everyone and their grannies in suit doing a cover of it #ILove***Shot

Growl: You know songs like that, they are stories that people can identify with. You know what I mean, anybody. Children were singing the song at graduations. At weddings. At funerals. Sm put those bitches in a basement and made money on their back shamelessly (I know that people might not agree with this placement but it's my opinion period.)

Lotto : all of this for a yt girl ? Regardless, #IStandWithAutotune LO LO TO TO

Mama : CARELESS, CARELESS, SHOOT, ANONYMOUS ANONYMOUS, HEARTLESS, MINDLESS, NO ONE WHO CARE ABOUT ME ? I love this song but they got ATE by the Youth With You (Xinwen the woman you are!) girls! It's no longer an exo song to me.

Ko Ko Bop: Kai wasn't showing his nigerian's heritage for nothing. Something for the summer, for the girls to have fun. It's indeed noise music but when you put the right amount I can stand it. IT GOES DOWN DOWN BABAY

Don't fight this feeling: uuuuumm it's not even that bad, it's just extremely weak next to their majestic discography

Love me right : Shawty imma party til the sun down is the reason I can't stand this song. Blame Sehun for this placement. I am a firm believer that he should only say e x o in every song. Some people are in groups for their voice (not him), their dancing skills (not him), their variety abilities (not him) or their visual (I will give him that I can't be a hater full-time lol). He should stand in the back and be pretty that's it #NoTalentNoMic

Power : stadium music, nothing more nothing less.

Universe: by courtoisie I included it. One thing about it, is that exo will always shows off amazing vocals. Still a snooze feast (not everyone can have ballads as excellent as T-ara's). Have to add that I saw a comment saying "Sehun's voice is so angelical [...]" and let's not lie to ourselves ladies and gays.

Wolf: probably stray kids' blueprint (minus the vocals). A crime against humanity. If you asked me between being stuck in an elevator with Leeteuk, Shindong and Heechul for 10 hours or listen to this song for less than 1 hour I would choose suju...

Ranking Exo title tracks

Because I miss these absolute mad lads. Please come back and resuscitate the music industry with some funky beats and pop bass lines.

Tempo - does this even need explaining? She’s the Queen. This is the song that made me stan Exo because I got into kpop a few months before KoKoBop dropped and I was so sick of that song after 9 months of hearing it on repeat. But TEMPO came back and REDEFINED the music industry. The acapella bridge *chef’s kiss*.

Growl - again, little explanation needed. It’s the kpop international anthem. Not as musically complex as Tempo but if it comes on you’d best bet I’ll be 으르렁-ing.

Call Me Baby - this is arguably the greatest pop song of the last 20 years. It just PERFECTLY represents what pop music should sound like and it never gets old. 

Love Me Right - the BRASS the GUITAR the retro kind of 70s/big brass sounds. Superior. Also Baekhyun CONSTANTLY served in live stages this era. 

Electric Kiss - I know this is a Japanese release but it’s SO GOOD. Also the choreography is incredible. The post-chorus + Chanyeol/Sehun’s rap is fire

Lucky One - criminally underrated. Super funky. Tue build-up of the rap bridge to the final chorus is great. 

Overdose - also underrated? Overdose is So Good. I LOVE the claps/fingersnaps at the start. It’s like a darker version of Growl in my head. The starting choreo is crazy. 

Power - to people who don’t like Power, do you also dislike fun? It’s so BOUNCY. The chorus is also so up-lifting. And the MV gave us Comedian!Exo. What more could you ask for?

Obsession - controversial to have it this low. It’s just cos i have to be in the * mood *. But it does slap. 

Monster - Monster was iconic but in the light of Exo’s other title tracks it’s not as memorable. But we did get ChanBaek with black hair and Baekhyun in some intense black eyeliner thank you stylists. 

Ko Ko Bop - again, controversial. It took me AGES to like this song because it was so over-played. it was only after i’d gone through all of Exo’s discography that I could appreciate this song

Lotto - relatively forgettable. I find the lyrics kind of cringey. Baek’s “lipstick chaeteau wine colour” and Chanyeol’s slick speak-rapping remain iconic tho.

Mama - again, this is one that I need to be in the * mood * for because it is experimental. It’s super cool tho. It just does my head in cos clearly i’m not big brain enough for it. 

Love Shot - sorry friends Love Shot is just boring. Especially after Tempo?? Do better SM

Wolf - I just cannot get into this, no matter how hard I try. I appreciate the experimentation tho.

What if Johnny debuted in EXO?

If you didn’t already know when Johnny joined SM Entertainment he trained with the EXO members and he was actually part of some initial line-ups but ultimately not debuting until years later with NCT instead. As EXO are one of my favourite groups and Johnny happens to be my NCT bias wrecker sometimes I wonder what would happen if he had actually debuted with EXO so if you’re interested in it to, do join me on this ride!

Position, Unit, Symbols and first Teasers

For position I think he would have the same as he currently has in NCT: Lead dancer, sub-rapper and vocalist. These positions really fit him and I think he would specially be a good addition do the dance line. He would also be replacing Sehun as the maknae as he is the youngest of the EXO final debut line-up.

Since EXO initially debuted with the Korean and Chinese sub-units concept I think he would fit more with the members of EXO-K than EXO-M so I believe he would be placed there until eventually the units are blend.

From the existing powers I think the most fitting one for Johnny would be Fire (because let’s face it, he does light a fire within us, right? No? Just me? Ok). But if he was an addition to the line-up instead of a replacement they would give him a new power so I think it could be something like speed, that would be a good addition to the existing ones. As for his number, since most numbers are based on their birthdays or favourite numbers he could either be 09 or 02.

EXO was announced in December 2011 but only officially debuted in April 2012, in the meantime we were presented by several teasers introducing the members. I believe Johnny could have easily slayed the “Lightsaber” teaser (originally by Kai), be part of one of the teasers that feat several members or even having a brand new teaser with another demo that SM teased but never released (the fact that we never got a full version of Metal still doesn’t sit right with me…).

Mama (EP)

“What is love” was the first pre-released track sang by D.O and Baekhyun (Korean version), and being the vocal song it is Johnny wouldn’t be part of it much like the rest of the members.

“History” was the second pre-release single and all the members are included in the vocals and dance so he would too. Johnny would probably get Chanyeol ad-lib’s in the beginning of the first and second parts of the song, as for dance he would probably be centre at least in one of the chorus and mostly in the front line of the formations. Out of the 3 singles for this EP I think this is the one that would fit him best.

“Mama” was the last single promoted for this album. I don’t think Johnny would have a lot of lines here because most of the song they all sing together. Honestly I do believe this choreography could’ve looked better with 7 members instead of 6 as some parts look a bit strange, and I think Johnny could have quite a few centre parts instead of Kai (don’t get me wrong, I love Kai but we gotta admit SM was way to biased in the beginning).

As for the other songs: “Angel” is sang by the vocal line and “Two Moons” by the rap line, I think Johnny would fit “Two Moons” better. “Machine” would also be a song he would fit in well.

XOXO (Studio Album)

“Wolf” is the title track for this album and there are a lot of parts for Johnny to slay, from the beginning divided by the rap line to the last section of the second part before the chorus. I would love to see him being another branch on the EXO tree (I love this choreography so much) and since all the members come together on this song he could have a lot of time in the front line.

As for the other songs: I don’t think he would participate in “Baby Don’t Cry” like Kai and Sehun because I think it’s really well split between the other 4 members. The songs that would most fist him in my option are “Let Out the Beast” as it has some good parts that would fit his voice, “Heart Attack” (I might be a bit biased on this one as it’s my favourite track on this album) and “My Lady” as I think the all vibe of the song would be very interesting to see him in.

XOXO (Repackage)

“Growl” is a very fitting song for Johnny in my option, he would absolutely kill this choreography and the whole school concept would look so good on him.

As for the other songs: he would be freaking adorable singing “XOXO”.

Bonus note: I would love to see his acting skills in the little drama they did for this album. SM could’ve done so much more with it if that concept had been more developed.

Miracles in December (EP)

“Miracles in December” this track is only sang by the main vocal line so again I don’t think Johnny would be part of it, although he would look gorgeous in that music video (the acting scenes).

As for the other songs: the most fitting one in my option would be “The Star” as I think it has the best vibe for him. Also can you imagine him in the elf costume? A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!

Overdose (EP)

“Overdose” would also be a good tittle track for Johnny from styling to the choreography. In this one the rap line barely has any lines but I think he could’ve blend in with the vocal line instead.

As for the other songs: he wouldn’t participate in “Moonlight” as it’s only sang by D.O and Baekhyun but I would love to hear him in “Thunder”.

EXODUS (Studio Album)

“Call Me Baby” has a very nice vibe for Johnny, again styling and choreography wise he would absolutely slay this and I feel like he could also get quite a few lines (but last face it, this would be the perfect song for EXO if they stuck with the original tittle “Call Me Daddy”).

As for the other songs: he would participate in “My Answer” as again is focused on the main vocal tine but I would love to hear his voice in “What if…”, “El Dorado” and obviously “Playboy”.

Love Me Right (Exodus Repackage)

“Love Me Right” has such a beautiful aesthetic we would get so many cool Johnny shots. And even thought the stylist screwed up making them wear American football uniforms with baseball hats (logic where are you?) I would love to see him with that. For this one I don’t think he would have many lines but there are a lot of parts in the choreography where he could easily be centre.

As for the other songs: “Tender Love” would suit him so well.

Sing for You (EP)

“Sing for You” is a slower track pretty much sang by D.O, Chen and Baekhyun so I wouldn’t see him having a lot of lines, but also it wouldn’t be the most suited concept for him.

As for the other songs: obviously I think he would fit “Lightsaber” as I previously mentioned he could’ve been in the initial teaser, but also “Girl x Friend” has some good lines for him.

Ex’Act (Studio Album)

“Monster” has a very cool choreography for Johnny to slay and there are a lot of good lines for him too. Visually we’ve seen dark Johnny a few times so he would fit right in.

“Lucky One” would have me go crazy with Johnny in those white suits. Also if his power was speed, like I mentioned in the beginning, it would be cool seeing him use it in the music video to trick those women who are keep EXO locked down.

As for the other songs: in terms of side tracks this would be a very good album for him as most songs would fit his vibe, except “Stronger” that is sang by the main vocal line and I don’t really feel like there would be space for someone else as the original distribution is really good.

Lotto (Ex’Act Repackage)

“Lotto” is my favourite EXO tittle track (I don’t even understand why some many people hate it) and I would love to see Johnny there. The whole concept just screams his name, even if they didn’t gave him a lot of lines he would still stand out here.

As for the other tracks: “Can’t Bring Me Down” would also be a great track for his voice and I think he could’ve also joined the line-up for “She’s Dreaming” even though it’s not sang by the whole group.

For Life (EP)

“For Life”, just like “Sing for You” would also be a track where Johnny wouldn’t have many lines.

As for the other tracks: like in their first EP we have two songs one for the vocal line “What I Want for Christmas” and one for the rap line “Twenty Four” and although I would love to hear him on the first one he would’ve definitely be in the second one instead because it’s so much his vibe.

The War (Studio Album)

“Ko Ko Bop” is the tropical vibe I crave to see Johnny in. Ever since I saw him in that floral shirt for the “Resonance” teaser pictures I knew he would’ve slayed this. Also it would be amazing to see him dance this choreography.

As for the other tracks: let’s just cut to the case and admit we just want to see him do the choreography for “The Eve”. Now that we got that out of the way I can also say that this would be a very good album for him in terms of side tracks as I could see him fit any of them.

The War: The Power of Music (Repackage)

“Power” is my least favourite EXO tittle track but honestly I could see Johnny in this music video with the other members fitting that weird spaceship with Doctor Octopus arms and they could’ve even used his speed power to defeat the villain. This would be a great opportunity to show case his bright and corky personality. It would also be amazing to have his ‘superhero’ cards and have him included in the comic that you get from the physical albums.

As for the other songs: “Sweet Lies” would be an amazing song for him.

Universe (EP)

“Universe” is another slow song so it would pretty much be like “Sing for You” and “For Life”.

As for the other songs: this album has my favourite side tracks so I’ll be biased and say he would sound amazing in all of them. Well, except for “Lights Out” which I think is the same situation as “Stronger”.

Don’t Mess Up My Tempo (Studio Album)

“Tempo” would make all our biker Johnny dreams come through. There are some pretty good line options for him and he could also have some killer parts in the choreography. Overall another great tittle track for him.

As for the other songs: this would be another great album for his vibe, specially “Sign” and “Oh La La La”. Also I would die hearing him sing “Smile On My Face”.

Love Shot (Don’t Mess Up My Tempo Repackage)

“Love Shot” is another tittle track with a great choreography for Johnny to slay, can you imagine him dancing that chorus? Anyway, when I saw the editorial NCT 127 did for Elle Japan I just knew his yellow suit would have looked so good next to EXO’s suits for this era.

As for the other songs: I would’ve loved to know how his voice would complement “Wait”.

Obsession (Studio Album)

“Obsession” has such an amazing duality concept, I would love to see Johnny against x-Johnny. Styling wise it would be something very interesting for him to try. In terms of line I think this would be the hardest one to fit him in as I think this is probably the best EXO distribution of their discography but anything is possible.

As for the other songs: the best ones for him in this album would definitely be “Trouble”, “Jekyll” and “Ya Ya Ya.”

Wow, this took me so long to put together but it was worthy to walkthrough the EXO memory lane with Johnny. In my honest option I think it was the right decision to not debut him with them as I feel like he fits the whole NCT vibe way better but it’s always fun to wonder!

Tittle: Idol Crush Words: 1.4K Pairing: Mia/Xukun; 10th Member of EXO Summary: Mia is a guest on Idol Producer and certain trainee has a crush on her. A/N: There was a request for it, but I lost it somehow so I’m sorry! Also part with Jackson and MC Jin are past events.

‘Today’s challenge is very important, but also very sentimental for me.’, Yixing said as he was standing in front of group of sixty boys. All of their eyes were on him and observing his every move and listening to his every word. ‘And on this challenge I am, or actually we are, gonna get help from a person that’s very important to me. They encourage me to do what I’m doing right now and to do things that I wanna do and with my heart. They always tell me this. They’re also a person that I worked with for quite some time and I can’t imagine to be without them.’, with every word Yixing could hear their curiosity and how they just couldn’t wait to see the surprise person. He just couldn’t help but smile. ‘Guys, please give a warm welcome to my dear friend and my bandmate, Mia!’

As soon as Mia heard her name she walked into the room. Clapping and supporting sounds were all around her. With a big smile on her face firstly she went to give a big hug to Yixing and then bowed in front of all the boys, who were still cheering for her. They all were smilling or just having their mouth open in shock. They just couldn’t believe that she was standing in front of them. Like if they would reach out they could probably touch her.

‘You know her right?’, Yixing asked playfully and Mia laughed, dropping her head. Another wave of clapping and cheering went around the room. ‘Now, Xukun are you feeling alright?’, he asked, turning himself to Cai Xukun, who was standing on a very right in the first row. He just nodded, cloudn’t stop himself from laughing and grinning. ‘Mia, you might not know about this, but- wait let me just show you something.’, Yixing added with a big grin and turned around to the huge screen behind them. 

MC Jin and Jackson Wang were in the room with all the trainees goofing around and answering the questions. When Jackson asked the question that nobody even thought of:

‘If you could work with somebody, anobody whether it’s dancing, singing, rapping or even acting, who would it be?’, he asked. The sound of shock but also curiosity went around the room and MC Jin raised his hand.

‘Jackson, who would you choose?’, he asked.

‘Definately Nicki Minaj.’, Jackson said with confidence and got cheering from boys in front of him. He stood up and went to the first boy that he saw, which was Cai Xukun, and asked him the same question. ‘What about you?’

‘Kim Mi-Young.’, he said shyly, after some time of thinking. People were just looking around confused, because they didn’t know who Kim Mi-Young is and Jackson was one of them too, untill he realised.

‘You mean Mia from EXO?’, he asked to the microphone, so that everybody could hear him. Xukun put his hand in his hands and nodded, not wanting to look at anybody. ‘You know, that if Zhang PD would heard this he’s kill you, right?’, Jackson added and everybody laughed, including Xukun.

The video ended and everyone were laughing. Well maybe except Xukun, who was a little embarressed.

‘Don’t be embarrassed though, Xukun.’, Yixing said through all the boys that were laughing and talking to each other. ‘Mia is also your big fan.’, he added and Mia turned to him with her mouth wide open. 

‘That’s not true!’, she protested and people in the room started to laugh even harder. 

‘Oh right! I forgot you said that you also like Zhu Zheng Ting!’

‘Yixing! That was a confidential conversation!’, Mia exclaimed and he just joined boys with laughing. ‘I was young and naive-’

‘That was few weeks ago!’, he interruped her and another wave of laughter went through the room.

‘-But I’ve grown and matured enough to know that I don’t have a favourite one, because all of you are very talented, very dear to me.’, Mia ended and looked around boys who were just nodding and thanking her.

‘That was smooth.’, Yixing whispered, poking her side.

‘Thanks.’, she smilled.

‘But today’s challenge is connected to Mia and myself. Behind us, on the wall there are twelve song names, that right now are covered. As the ranking goes you’re gonna choose the song that you’ll like and the people that will already be there, are your teammates and rivals at the same time.’, Yixing said and boys nodded, coding everything that he was saying. It was so nice to see how influential he is for those young people. They’re taking everything they could from him and learning it immediately. ‘After this your goal is to devide song, so that everyone has a part of either singing or rapping, choose your leader and center and the language you wanna sing in. Either Korean or Chinese.’, he anded and looked down at Mia, signaling that it’s her turn.

‘‘I’m sure you realised what kind of songs are there, because in other way I wouldn’t be here. ’, Mia said, looking around at everybody. Some of them had already raised eyebrown, because they know what’s coming, some of them however we’re still clueless. 'Theme for the songs this time is: EXO. And I’m here to help you. Maybe not with rapping or dancing but singing for sure, especially my parts.’, she laughed and boys joined her. 'Do you wanna know the titles?’, she asked and they answered with loud 'yes’.

Mia walked to the wall behind her and Yixing and started revealing songs one by one. With each song there was different reaction. Some were excited, some scared or excited. 

In the end, the songs were: Mama, Wolf, Growl, Overdose, Call Me Baby, Love Me Right, Lucky One, Monster, Lotto, Ko Ko Bop, Power, The Eve.

‘Before you start choosing songs, let’s talk about the reward, shall we?’, Yixing asked and their eyes went back to him, nodding. ‘Each group will have two winners. Person who will get the most points from our audience will get one hundred thousand points from the very beggining of the voting , second place will get half of it, which is fifty thousand points.’, all the boys were shocked and excited at the same time. ‘And also person who will get most points overall will go on a date with Mia.’, Yixing added. Boys gasped and started to clap immediately.

‘What?!’, Mia screamed and turned to him.

Mia then turned around and saw poor Cai Xukun standing at the end of the table, right next to chocolate muffins. She took the plate and walked to him, just to stop in front of muffins. 

‘Hi.’, Xukun said shyly. ‘I mean, good afternoon, teacher.’, he corrected himself.

‘Please, call me Mia.’, she said, looking at him. ‘You don’t have to be formal with me. We’re the same age.’, she added and he just nodded. Mia looked down at his hands, just to see blue polaroid camera. ‘So, you wanna photo?’, she asked and Xukun nodded again, but when he lifted head his cheeks were red and smile was bigger than ever. 

Mia laughed and montioned to him to come closed. Taking camera from Xukun, she smiled widely for the photo. When it was done, she turned around and gave him tight hug, which was something he didn’t expect. When they tore apart, Mia excused herself and walked out of the room, leaving Xukun where he was standing. He was still shocked and couldn’t believe what just happened. His eyebrows were raised and mouth opened.

‘The best day in my entire life.’, he whispered, when he got back to himself, looking down at the photo.

Jessica Doyle: First there was SM selling Exo as The Biggest Boy Band in the World, and the line of singles -- "Wolf," "Overdose," "Monster" -- shooting for hyper-grandiose and never quite making it. Then there was the Sleazy Underachieving Exo of "Lotto" and "Ko Ko Bop," and even the Maybe-Not-Really-Worth-the-CGI-Budget Exo of "Power." And now, finally, finally, finally, we have a song that's all the grander for not trying to clonk anyone on the head with its inevitability. There's still plenty of ridiculousness in the package: voices distorted to unrecognizability, Kai having lost two inches off his shirt and fifteen keys off his piano, Chen having drawn the mullet short straw this time round, and Chanyeol cribbing from a high-school book report (I mean, if you think about it, Daisy does mess up Gatsby's tempo pretty thoroughly). But by the time "Don't slow it up for me!" is followed by a slowing of pace, you know Exo is in control of this seeming skidding all over the road. All the skill that animated "Growl," possibly their least ambitious single, is on display, in a song with enough room and ambition to make the skill evident. Finally, now that Exo doesn't have to be the Biggest Boy Band in the World, they get a single that demonstrates how big they can be. [7]

Ryo Miyauchi: Exo's posturing goes on as though "don't mess up my tempo" is some half-baked twist on "bitch, don't kill my vibe," yet the bed springs creaking behind the chorus give such a heavy wink that it just throws off their entire poker face. "Tempo" does get more playful in between their effort to solidify hip-hop seriousness: Exo hum and snap to a beat as they make their advances like they're a band of teens in a high school musical. Any irony picked up from them hitting these cues to express sexiness is most likely a pure accident, and frankly trying to figure out if "Tempo" is a big sex joke is more fun than the song itself. Will Adams: Don't mess up your otherwise fun Mars pastiche with bed squeaks. [4]

Andy Hutchins: Splicing Bruno Mars-style revivalism with NSync-style theatricality is a good thing! [7]

Thomas Inskeep: I love that for a song titled "Tempo," from an album titled Don't Mess Up My Tempo, this song goes through numerous tempos along the way. It might be a little obvious, but in Exo's hands, it works. I hear a bit of Daft Punk's "Around the World" on the verses, and the a capella bridge could almost be Take 6. Also, I'm kind of a sucker for K-pop boy band songs pleading for a girl, especially when they're uptempo. [8]

Alex Clifton: For every lovely moment in "Tempo," like the choral/a cappella section towards the end, there is another detail that drives me mad, like the clown-nose squeaky noise in the backbeat of the chorus. It's awfully disjointed, which would be less of a sin if the chorus didn't literally include the line "don't mess up my tempo." I'm not, boys -- you are only doing this to yourselves. [4]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: A traversal of so many different styles that it sounds like it has a far more complex structure than it actually does. There's a chorus, yes, but the song feels less like a pop song than a specific mood that gets reimagined in a multitude of ways. It's 3:44 but it feels double the length: a testament to how it's bursting with so many ideas that all get sufficiently fleshed out. [6]

Alfred Soto: "Don't mess up my tempo," they insist, while the tempo disagrees, often violently. On other singles Exo's insistence came off as pushy and rather macho; the harmonizing in the last third, however, adds a crucial sweetener. Seoulphilly's back again! [7]

Okay hear me out, what if what we've seen so far truly is EXO living in parallel universes. So we're dealing with TWO timelines!! I tried to think which ones they're more "normal" people and where they use super powers. first time i heard of them: Uhhh. I found the MV Overdose...I think my friend might have introduced my tbh. It was years ago, I have no idea when LOL it was like directly after EXO M disappeared.

favorite (and least favorite) title track: Overdose still tbh. I love that song so much and there's a nostalgic factor. Probably Wolf LOL or Ko Ko Bop.

what i like most about them: They were the group that got me back into kpop after I kind of fell out of love with it (call it a blessing or a curse idk LOL) and I really love all of the members. They're hard working, they're grown up and cursing in their songs these days apparently, and like...I guess Yixing is back LOL let's hope he's really back. Anyway, overall I think they overcame a lot of crazy stuff and they continue to do so and stay strong. I think that proves their love for each other and their work. Good on you, lads.

headcanon #021: opinion on knight (& white knight) singles

word count: 1,593 words

mama: ash isn’t a huge fan of knight’s debut song, but it was his debut and he wasn’t about to complain when he was still surprised he was chosen for debut in the first place. at the time, he’d convinced himself it was experimental and edgy, but now, ash really just thinks it’s cringe-worthy, so he’s glad they don’t really perform it anymore.

wolf: some of the choreography elements of wolf were innovative, but even at the time, ash couldn’t pretend to think the song was good. musically, there are parts that could have been part of a decent song, but lyrically and conceptually, it’s a disaster and ash would like to never have to howl like a wolf again. he didn’t have many lines in their early days, and this is a song he didn’t mind being able to fade into the background of.

growl: this was the first time knight did a more classic boy group concept and that was a relief to ash. at the time, he really loved it, though he hadn’t expected it to blow up into the absolute hit it was. the concept and sound fit him well at the time and it’s one of the songs that ash believes stands the test of time the best of knight’s songs. all songs considered, though, it’s no longer one of his favorite eras.

overdose: musically, overdose wasn’t one of ash’s favorite at the time or now. there are parts of its production that do remind ash a bit of the classic 90s western boy groups he grew up on, but not enough for him to fall in love with the song. he was really getting tired of the aggressive interpretations of love knight was taking on in their title tracks, but overdose was a step up from all of the animal imagery of wolf and growl.

call me baby: this is definitely one of ash’s favorite eras. they were finally moving in the right direction lyrically, in ash’s opinion, and the music video and concept were very classic boy group, which is really all ash wanted when he became a trainee under bc. it was the first time he really felt like the main concept he was supposed to portray was sexy, but it wasn’t over the top. a lot of ash’s fans consider this his first “legendary” era because it was the first time he was really able to stand out at all and his image fits the vibe of the song well, and ash wouldn’t disagree.

love me right: the football concept in the music video was weird to ash, but the song wasn’t bad, save for some questionable english, but that wasn’t new. overall, it’s a forgettable era for him.

sing for you: this is a strong contender for ash’s favorite knight song. he doesn’t have many lines, but he likes listening to it as much as he does performing it. it was the first title track where he really felt he could connect to the lyrics and, if he’s allowed to say so, he considers it one of his favorite boy group songs in the history of idol music.

monster: ash’s hatred for monster is well-established. other than not being in a good place in general at the time, he hated the way they went from the emotional vulnerability to “i’m going to mess you up” and how he felt it fed into a bad image when he was already struggling with the public perception of himself. he could barely hide his distaste for this comeback.

lucky one: it’s better than the other promoted single for the comeback, monster, and it wins points for that, but it’s pretty forgettable for ash and he doesn’t have much of an opinion on it at all.

lotto: again, ash’s opinion is tainted by his own personal difficulties in 2016, but lotto’s not the top of his list either. the autotune was too critical a part of the production for a song intended to be performed live, in his opinion, and the choreography wasn’t anything knight hadn’t done before.

fanfare: why bc decided he needed to be one of the center focuses on a comeback only a few months after his scandal, ash will never understand. it was the most lines and center time he’d gotten in his career up to that point, so ash doesn’t associate many feelings with the song other than pressure. he came out mostly praised for successfully delivering in his increased focus, but it was a big change for him.

gorilla: throw this one in the dumpster with wolf and monster. ash does feel this is the first time he really got to let his vocals shine, but it’s so bad lyrically in his opinion that it’s only competition for worst in that category is wolf. he’s glad they’ve mostly left it in the past.

hey mama: this song grew on him. he has some objections to “mama” as a term of endearment, but ash has more fun performing white knight’s songs than almost any of the full group songs. he isn’t a fan of having to rap for it, but he likes the feeling and concept of their promotions. it felt fun, but age appropriate, and both while still being appropriately sexy for knight’s image. if he can’t get one cute concept for kicks, this is the next best thing.

can you feel it?: bc’s budget should be able to provide better than this. again, it felt like falling back onto a sound and concept they’d done before for the sake of safe sales. not one of their worst, but certainly not one of their best.

roar: lyrically, roar isn’t strong to ash, but he did like the choreography and it’s another era that’s popular among fans that bias him. he has some problems with it’s production, too, so it falls in the middle of the field overall.

easy love: this was the last time ash really liked a knight song and, as is the case with most of his favorites, it’s because he finds it a relatable song. the song was good and different enough from their usual for ash not to get immediately bored. it wasn’t one of their top hits, but when they do get to perform it, ash is almost happy to be on stage with knight, a rare emotion for him.

ko ko bop: he just wanted this promotion period to be over with. it’s not bad, but ash doesn’t feel that knight was made to do summer songs. the season they excel in is winter.

power: “trash” - ash kwon, 2017. ash doesn’t know what the hell this was, but they should have kept it as the second rate superhero disney channel original series theme song it must have originally been.

o sole mio: a noble try at the latin trend, but ash had checked out of knight completely by this point and he couldn’t put his heart completely into any of their releases any more. it’s not bad, but ash doesn’t know that knight needed to go down the musical path they did for this comeback just because the sound was popular at the time.

universe: if ash had had any emotional investment in knight left, he would have been fond of this song, but, as it stands, it’s another in a long list he had to record because he’s contractually obligated to. he does like the prominent piano line and the lyrics, too. if ash had been permitted to write a knight title track, he thinks it might sound something like this.

blooming day: it’s no hey mama, but it’s alright. like the previous white knight single, it’s concept is more in line with what ash would like to do with group songs, and he found the choreography enjoyably challenging. the only thing he’d change is the “can i be your boyfriend?” hook. anything to dissuade fans from seeing him as their fantasy boyfriend.

critical beauty: bc must have been running out of ideas to be sampling elvis. it tries for romantic and falls into sleazy if you ask ash, but he actually thinks he’d like it a lot more on a different boy group, like charm. ash believes they would have pulled it off better than knight.

tempo: to ash, it’s simply... not good. he admires what the producer was going for, but he doesn’t like the production in the slightest and hasn’t even listened to this song outside of practice and performances more than once or twice.

love shot: it’s miles better than tempo, but it reminds ash of how much he hates selling sex. the chorus is also too repetitive, but he won’t lie; he’d have loved to sing the bridge.

now or never: bc are cruising now, banking on knight’s past success to carry them through instead of putting their best hitmakers to work on their albums, by ash’s estimation. is it bad? no, but it’s not anything special in the current boy group landscape either. he doesn’t mind performing it, though.

enough: ash thinks the company could have done something interesting with the narcissus concept, but , in the end, he felt like nothing more than a sex object again, so he doesn’t have many positive associations with this era and the lyrics are weak again, too. don’t even get him started on the english version.

ash’s favorite comeback singles are call me baby, sing for you, hey mama, and easy love. his least favorite comeback singles are wolf, monster, gorilla, and power.

“XOXO” is honestly such an impressive first album. 

Like “Growl” as an intro song gives you a bit of a sense of funk but keeps that strong pop sound and makes you want to dance. It’s also super catchy, and you find yourself repeating the chorus in your mind after just the first or second listen. 

Then we get “Wolf” which, imo, is the first of that trademark ~EXO style~ in terms of music. It has some of those falling notes that ko ko bop and can’t bring me down utilize (listen to them next to eachother, you’ll hear what I’m talking about). It also has that driving beat that I always associate with EXO, and uses way more EDM sound effects and stylings than “Growl” does.  

“XOXO” isn’t as distinctive to me since it seems to be catering a bit more to their target audience, but honestly? It’s still a good song that’s genius because the chorus is catchy af and it’s also the name of the band. Everyone knows who EXO is now, but at the time, getting “xo xo~” stuck in someone’s head so they don’t forget the band name is hella smart. 

“Lucky” and “Baby Don’t Cry” don’t stand out to me much, and are tbh lower points on the album because they use so much piano or sound too poppy without much of a signature sound, but they pull thru with “Black Pearl”, which has a more trademark EXO sound with the strong bass, high drama, and wall of sound 

“Don’t Go” goes back again with the piano, but it’s a sweet song and I won’t judge it too harshly because I like it so much lol 

“Let out the Beast” again goes back to that EDM type sound, and is very dramatic. I personally like that EXO maintained this level of Extra in their music to this day. It’s maybe not something you want to listen to on repeat, but it’s a nice touch to this album and keeps with the earlier theme that “Wolf” set up. 

“3.6.5″ honestly reminds me so much of One Direction. I don’t mean this to shade EXO or say that their music is derivative, but listen to “Nobody Compares” by 1D and tell me you can’t hear it. Anyways a fun bop I like it. 

“Heart Attack” is just all around good. A style that I noticed in this song and most of EXO’s music is the buildup of a beat and a bass drop. It’s apparent in ko ko bop and overdose, and el dorado (which competes with MAMA for their most dramatic song if you ask me haha). Anyways Heart Attack is good because it takes that beat build and bass drop and just kind of chills it out so you get the satisfaction that a bass drop would provide but waay mellowed out. It’s kind of like chill trap, but poppier. 

“Peter Pan” again hits me with those 1D vibes. Check out “Up All Night” and “Best Song Ever and u’ll feel it. Definitely not a bad song, even though it strays from my favorite parts of EXO’s style. 

“Baby” and “My Lady” are kind of slower ballad like songs, and to be honest, I think are a great way to wind down a first album. 

tl;dr this was a really great debut album with qualitea songs that firmly establishes EXO’s style with it’s earlier tracks and wraps up neatly with slow pop songs in the end.
