soccer club captain mingyu x yearbook editor reader au! pt 2
continue from pt 1
mingyu is very close to seungcheol, the soccer club former captain and school alumni as he came to monitor the progress of soccer club under mingyu’s leadership
the 10 players, lining up and standing across each others trying to pass the ball to each other as a warm up
so the team was divided to into 6:6 with seungcheol as the goalkeeper for the opposite team
the game started with a loud whistle and seokmin got the ball, trying to score into the opposite goal, he passed the ball to the team’s striker, mingyu and mingyu striked a goal easily
jihoon, then tackled a ball from seokmin and almost landed a goal but was blocked by chan, the team’s goalkeeper
after 2 hours of games, the practice ended and mingyu’s team won with 8:6
seungcheol knew he entrusted the soccer club to a reliable person
“good game today mingyu and others, i have lots of fun monitoring and playing with you guys today! good luck with upcoming regional tournament! now lets go to mcdonalds boys its my treat!”
since its been half of the year, the yearbook committees had gotten so busy to catch up with activities within the months (sports day, academic decathlon, language week etc)
since that bread and milk day, mingyu and you didn’t come across each other except that time you met him at the school gate and he blushed suddenly
what drugs he’s consuming
anyways, you were discussing with yearbook journalists and photographers about having them manage their time properly according to upcoming events due to midterm examinations coming soon
a lot of teachers complained that some yearbook committees had to miss classes frequently because of activities held by the school (its inevitable you know)
you went to your work desk after briefing but the photographers and journalists still sat around the meeting table
you were eavesdropping to minghao talking to other photographers about regional soccer tournament apparently being held soon and who’s getting the tickets
“mingyu got me a front seat ticket and he said he is inviting someone else too”
“he is probably inviting the girl in the theatre club, no?”
“dunno...”
WHATS THE DEETS WITH THE THEATRE CLUB GIRL
“well im not suprised if they still keep in contact with each other”
as much as you pretended to be unbothered you cant help yourself to be engaged in their conversation about mingyu
until the assistant editor of yours, soonyoung or people call him mr hochi came breaking the chit chatter to end with his arms crossed
hochi is much feared by the committees compared to the chief editor yourself since he is a year older and stricter with the yearbook’s precision
he was the chief editor for 3 years consecutively before you and decided to become an assistant because a lot of past committees quitted because of his leadership lol
“i didn’t appoint you guys to gossip but to do your job as yearbook committees, i don’t want to hear any complaints again from teacher about any of you slacking or missing out in classes”
with that everyone parted ways and continue doing their things at their personal desks
that was just an appreciation advertisement for our mr hochi lets get back to your love story
when you went to your locker to pick up english literature books, you saw a note stuck on the locker door
‘hey can we meet at equipments stores around 4 am right after our evening class, don’t be late i have to attend my soccer practice at 4:15 pm, sincerely mingyu’
okay why he wants to meet you at 4 in the morning but the practice at 4:15 pm???
you just laughed and proceeded to your literature class
after your literature class, you went straight to equipments stores and saw mingyu were fiddling around with something in his hands
“why do you want to meet me at 4 am?”
mingyu was half shOOKETH when he heard your voice and he had this “what???” face
“you wrote 4 am in the note” and you laughed again
mingyu was rubbing his neck and kinda laughed too, “i wrote that in hurry because i was in rush to my mathematics class”
you nodded and he smiled in awe after looking at you
“ah actually i want to give you this..i don’t know if you’re free but i’d be honoured if you can come to my tournament”
(my readers be like pretends to be surprise.gif lmao)
HE GAVE YOU THE VIP SEAT TO THE SOCCER TOURNAMENT YEAYYYY
“oh....” you just accepted it shyly
suddenly he rummaged his adidas convertible and took out an egg tart and strawberry milk again this time
you feel so overwhelmed you want to burst when he gave them to you
“y/n do come to my tournament this saturday alright? i would be so happy if the chief editor herself could come and give her personal feedback!! i gtg now, bye!!”
“thank you mingyu..”
mingyu walked away and went to field after making you feeling so flushed
the following morning, when you walk to the hall you met minghao and he greeted you a good morning
“y/n i already talk to the graphic and layout designer to reformat the yearbook design since we’re adding new segment”
“what segment?”
“either advertisements or candids section, what do you think is better?”
“for 2 pages? nobody is gonna be entertained with ads” and someone was running in the busy hall, pushing your shoulder making your file in your arms fell
minghao collected your file and tilted his head to the side
“y/n..you’re going to mingyu’s tournament?”
little did you remember that the soccer tournament ticket was in your clear file and minghao had to see that
“y-yes...”
“we’re going together then!!!” minghao jumped a little and stopped his track, “wait a minute...so you’re the girl he is currently having a crush on?”
“what crush? what about the theatre club girl?”
minghao was standing with his hand hanging to his waist, “so you overheard our conversation?”
you nodded
“we guessed him and the theatre club girl were a thing but turned out she was pestering mingyu one-sided”
he walked to the stairs to go to his literature class and you continued your way to your physics class after bidding goodbyes
in the literature class, minghao interrogating mingyu session
“dude, you’re flirting with y/n now?”
mingyu ignored the latter but he was actually flustered to answer
“do you expect a full page coverage of you and soccer club in the yearbook by doing this?”
mg: “what the hell minghao?”
minghao: “okay im just kidding”
mg: “she’s too adorable”
minghao: “adorable? didnt she get mad at you for sleeping on the couch in a prohibited room?”
mingyu was in his dreamy state because he was reminded of your smile
he was like that for 1 minute and minghao snapped his fingers
“okay fine i like her genuinely i want to keep her in pocket stop asking me”
saturday arrived aka the awaited soccer tournament day
your father lifted you off at the town’s stadium and you saw minghao with his camera bag and camera tripod
“hi do you need help mr photographer?”
minghao: “sure thing, do you have the ticket? lets go in”
you helped carried the adapters and batteries bag and got inside the soccer hall
mingyu who happened to be searching for vending machine found you and minghao
HE INSTANTLY TURNED INTO THE BIGGEST PUPPY EVER
he came running to you and grinned as wide as he can
“you came y/n!!!”
he looked at your shoulder and noticed the adapter bag belonged to minghao and rolled his eyes as he took the bag off your shoulder
“yOU MADE HER HOLD YOUR THINGS???!!!”
minghao was like -_______- “shut up mingyu”
“i offered to help because those seemed heavy”
after the chaos mingyu held minghao’s both camera and adapters bags then lead both of you to your vip seats
minghao set up his tripod and started adjusting his camera
you were inspecting the soccer hall
can you guess what mingyu was doing?
DING DONG DAENG
he was looking at you tenderly like he hadn’t seen you for 10 million years, he was really infatuated with you
you said “don’t you have like rehearsal or stuff to do other than looking at me like a creep?”
mingyu blushed again and excused himself to the waiting room to brief to his soccer club teammates
“i have never seen him so invested in a girl like that before, he likes you like a lot y/n”
“really minghao, you think so?”
anyways the tournament began, for the first halves of the game your school team seemed sloppy and demotivated because “apparently they seemed nervous” the commentator said
during the interval time, you can see and hear mingyu shouted really loudly to give encouragements toward his teams
the coach also were guiding them and giving careful advices before their second halves started
mingyu on the field were looking at you and minghao, smiling half-heartedly
you took this opportunity to make a big heart with your arms and mingyu instantly laughed, continued running to his position
seokmin, jihoon and mingyu scored 4 goals during the second halves with chan managing to block 2 goals and 1 free kick from opposite team
your school soccer club took the trophy home with last minute goal from jihoon with 9:7 and all of the players were roaring happily doing their circle hugs
after the final match ended, you waited by the side of field
mingyu saw you in the crowds and he ran towards you
“congratulations mingyu, i enjoyed it!!”
“well im hoping you could come for another tournaments”
“i would love to......date you and also go to your other tournaments.”
mingyu was SHOOKETH AGAin its like he was getting heart attack
“what?????”
“you didn’t hear it wrong, boyfriend”
mg: “so it’s day one today?”
you nodded and beamed like the brightest sun ever
mingyu gently kissed your cheek and you both half-hugged since mingyu was sweating lol
little did you know, minghao captured the picture of mingyu kissing your cheek perfectly

DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN
DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN - https://keywestlou.com/dewey-defeats-truman/Many dislike Biden today. Including members of the Democratic Party. A similar situation existed in 1948. Truman was President. New York Governor Thomas Dewey was running against him. Truman had nary a friend. The election result was surprising. Truman won! On November 3, 1948, the Chicago Tribune jumped the gun and mistakenly declared Dewey winner of the previous day's Presidential election race in a front page headline: DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN. Truman's victory was shocking. Not expected. Beside appearing without public support, Truman had no money. Contributors were not inclined to be given to losers. Media advertising was the way to go. Truman did not have sufficient funds. So he ran a 22,000 mile "whistle stop" railroad and automobile campaign. Truman stopped in every little town along the way. Described himself as the "underdog." Eventually his appearances took hold. The crowds at his railroad stops grew larger. He spoke from the platform on the last car. People began a chant that grew louder with each stop: "Give them Hell, Harry!" The Chicago Tribune was not the only media outlet to screw up and announce Dewey winner. H.V. Kaltenborn was America's leading radio commentator. His voice distinctive. He went on the air announcing Dewey the projected winner. I had two connections with Truman relating to his campaign and victory. It was late summer 1948. The summer before eighth grade. Truman's train would be stopping in Utica. My buddies and I rode our bicycles to the railroad station. We were able to wheel them up right in front of the platform. Truman no more than 5 feet away. Impressed we were to see and hear the President. Fast ahead 22 years to 1960. I was a senior at Syracuse University Law School. Truman long retired was appearing to provide several talks.  One of the events scheduled was a private luncheon with what was represented to be the University's top 12 students. At the time, Syracuse had 35,000 students. I was selected to represent the Law School. A distinction I thought undeserving. Though I had brought glory to the Law School by excelling in a national competition. Luncheon was in a private dining room. Two round tables of 7 each. The extra person at one table Truman, at the other a University representative. Seating was arranged. I was seated next to Truman. Wild! Truman kept us entertained during lunch. His pride and humility both obvious. Truman's talk humorous. He had us constantly laughing. He spoke primarily of the 1948 election. He brought with him a copy of the Chicago Tribune and laughingly showed it off. He even had a recording of H.V. Kaltenborn's statement to the nation that he had lost. He first mimicked the recording. Then played it. He had it down to a science! Be cognizant my friends, the results of political elections can be surprising. How does the saying go.....Don't count your chickens till they're hatched? A no hitter in yesterday's World Series game. The Astros beat the Phillies 5-0. The Phillies threw 4 or 5 pitchers in on the way to victory. None gave up a hit. The series now 2-2. One month ago, I wrote advising there would be a turkey shortage this Thanksgiving. Not only a shortage, also that available turkeys would cost double what they did last year. Nothing has changed, except the cost might be more than double. Cost increase is attributable to increased costs turkey farmers have been experiencing: Food, fuel and fertilizer. PLUS, a particularly virulent strain of avian flu. More than 6 million turkeys have already died in 2020 alone. The number is expected to increase in coming weeks. The Federal Reserve has increased interest rates 0.75 percent for the fourth consecutive time. It represents the sixth overall rate hike this year and represents the Fed's most aggressive initiative since 1980. The increase(s) are supposed to work. Have not so far. Their purpose is to break the back of inflation. On the other hand, though the text book approach, will it instead break the bank, break the economy? Scares me. Be well.

AEW extends agreement with WarnerMedia until 2023
Tumblr media
AEW started on the right foot in 2020. It has put on two good shows for its flagship program, AEW Dynamite, which is broadcast on the TNT network, and with this it has managed to beat NXT in terms of audience and rating, exceeding 900 thousand viewers by Second consecutive week. Apparently, in this 2020 the good news for AEW fans does not stop; All Elite Wrestling and WarnerMedia announced that AEW Dynamite will run until 2023, with a four-year agreement totaling $175 million. The agreement, reportedly, has an option for the fourth year, at a "significantly higher price," and would include the launch of a new program for the company. Here is the press release: Breaking News - #AEWDynamite Extended Through 2023 pic.twitter.com/cZHeqGdcRs — All Elite Wrestling (@AEWrestling) January 15, 2020 AEW DYNAMITE on TNT is one of the 20 best cable series and has reached almost 32 million viewers on all platforms in just three months Pasadena, January 15, 2020.- WarnerMedia today announced an expanded relationship with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), the new and innovative wrestling company that has already redefined the fight with resounding success after only a few months. WarnerMedia has extended its agreement for AEW DYNAMITE, one of the 20 best cable series, until 2023. In addition, the parties agreed to launch another AEW action night, offering more of the fan's favorite wrestlers, with a second periodic show. 'When Tony Khan first shared his idea of starting a new wrestling company, I was impressed by his audacity to face a contestant who has been the only one in the game for twenty years, and finally, I thought that together we could join his vision for a new and authentic product, 'says Kevin Reilly, content director, HBO Max, president, TNT, TBS, and truTV. "The fans have talked and after only three months, we have seen AEW shake the world of wrestling and this will only continue as we develop this momentum ." AEW DYNAMITE exploded on the wrestling scene when it premiered on TNT as the number 1 wrestling show of the night. It has continued to produce high-performance episodes every week with an average of 1.2 million viewers in total and 654 thousand in the 18-49 segment per episode, live view and up to 7 days later. In just three months, AEW DYNAMITE has reached almost 32 million people on all platforms. The program also offers the youngest wrestling audience on television. 'When we launched AEW a year ago, we wanted to start a revolution that would disrupt the wrestling business, but everyone said it would take a weekly television partner to make AEW real in the eyes of everyone, especially fans.' Said Tony Khan, president, and owner of AEW. 'What virtually no one noticed at the time was that Kevin Reilly and TNT were committed to this same movement from day one, and their belief in us made it possible for AEW to think and act big from the beginning. Here we are, only three months of Wednesday night episodes, and now we have extended until 2023! Now we are making the last statement that the AEW and TNT team is here to stay and provide fans with more of the great fight that fans demand and deserve. " Weekly action-packed encounters continue to air live on Wednesdays from 8 pm to 10 pm Eastern time, as part of the TNT programming of a large television going forward, which gives viewers the best seat in the house for electrifying stories, dynamic characters, and exciting events. As a global franchise, AEW has already secured transmission agreements in the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Germany and is available in more than 100 countries through the AEWPlus subscription service. Both sides are continually exploring ways to further expand this relationship. WarnerMedia announced in May 2019 that it was working with AEW, using its position as a next-generation global media company to help turn this company into a worldwide professional wrestling franchise. WarnerMedia has also been offering fans exclusive access to AEW PPV events, which began in May 2019, through the B / R Live platform. His next event, REVOLUTION, which will take place in Chicago on Saturday, February 29, will also be broadcast on the aforementioned platform. With almost 100,000 total purchases of AEW PPVs, the high commitment of B/R Live fans provides an invaluable opportunity to build the AEW audience and maximize its audience. In addition to being a success in ratings, AEW has won high praise from a large press sector. Newsweek called it 'One of the best shows of 2019', and four of the AEW superstars were nominated among the 10 best Sports Illustrated wrestlers of 2019, and Jon Moxley was named 'Fighter of the Year'. The Washington Post also wrote that 'AEW ... is a unique opportunity in the generation to present the professional struggle differently, with a focus on diversity and inclusion in the ring, both in the high command and in the audience. ' USA Today referred to the company as the 'great new kids', and the New York Post stated that AEW DYNAMITE 'showed excellent action within the ring by which it became known.' Complex described AEW DYNAMITE as a 'top-notch' show and Film wrote that 'AEW is the best and most refreshing thing professional wrestling has had in years.' AEW is a new global wrestling company that presents a list of various world-class wrestlers, giving fans a new wrestling experience for the first time in 20 years. AEW is more than wrestling. It is a movement driven by fans. Focused on fast and high-impact competitions, AEW offers fans more athleticism along with real sports analysis. Founded by President and owner Tony Khan, AEW is headed by Cody & Brandi Rhodes, Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson), Kenny Omega and Hangman Adam Page. The list of wrestlers is also full of incredibly skilled competitors, including Nyla Rose, Awesome Kong, Dustin Rhodes, Jungle Boy, Dr. Britt Baker, MJF, Pac and SCU. In addition to being talents in the ring, Cody, Brandi Rhodes, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega are also executives of the brand. Regarding this new agreement, which includes the launch of a new show (although without further details), Dave Meltzer indicated the following: Read the full article

KanaRiko AU
Well further to this post, I’ve dug out this incomplete messy outline I have for this KanaRiko fic. It’s loosely inspired by the movie Kimi no Namae wa (which I highly recommend) when I watched it back in December. It would’ve been a decent-sized fanfic (8-9 chapters?) but no energy/time to actually write out OTL
Ramblings/outline for the 7 chapters below::
Riko waking up, feeling odd; she had toned muscles and felt taller… and had bigger bust too. She was also stunned by the scenery outside; she thought back on the last thing she remembered, that she had trouble playing her recital piece on piano, and the viola wasn't much help either so she tried painting for inspiration It didn't work... Or did it? She must have passed out and was now having this oddly realistic dream. She might as well take the opportunity since the scenery really was amazing She then learned the girl, whose body she now resided in, was called Kanan and lived with her grandfather at a diving shop on Awashima, an island near the small town of Uchiura. Kanan was currently taking leave from school since her grandfather was injured and there was no one else to look after him or the shop she made miso soup, one of the few dishes she was confident at, yet Grandpa was able to tell that it was different than usual. The kind elderly man only asked if she was feeling alright, which made her feel a bit more at ease in this foreign environment, dream or not. She tried to understand what her usual routine around the shop is, but she really had 0 experience about such things. Grandpa patiently went over her chores (he was even going to do it himself seeing she was confused, but Riko stopped him since he had to use a crutch) Later afternoon, two girls came to visit. You and Chika were very friendly, a different kind of friendly than Riko was used to. Sure everyone at Otonokizaka was incredibly kind and accepting, but they lacked this special warmth You & Chika were showing. Or perhaps they were only this kind because they were close friends with Kanan while Riko wasn’t especially close to any of her classmates? Either way, Riko truly enjoyed this dream, the sea was beautiful and she wanted to dive but can't because she didn’t know how; dream or not she didn’t want to endanger this body's rightful owner. She woke up the next day in her bed, confirming the fact she truly did dream. Her mom teased her “You’re not running to school today?” Riko was puzzled, even more so when classmates gave her strange looks at school, something about her playing with alpacas. A fellow art club member asked her if she was ‘back to normal’. She opened her sketchbook to find a simplistic and rather cute/chibi sketch of the sculpture. (Think of Suwawa’s art style) Riko didn’t remember having to sketch this yet though. She flipped to next page and was stunned to find “Wow, you're really talented, Riko-san! Sorry about that pic, but that's the most I can draw."
Kanan staring blankly at the canvas. Last time it was a sketchbook so she could at least joke about her doodle and get by, but how was she supposed to paint!! Her thoughts on Riko, who seemed to be by herself, no close friends which confused her because Riko was pretty, feminine and incredibly talented. This was also Otonokizaka too, the famed school that μ's attended, the holy land Dia always talked about. Also, it felt really nice to have a wholesome family meal with parents. She was slightly envious of Riko. The classroom atmosphere also made her realize that she missed school. “Well, you won’t know unless you try, like Chika’s always said!” She squeezed out a myriad of colors from the tubes and just went with her instincts. At the end, the advisor praised her for her new style of impressionist painting. She could only chuckle dryly. -------- Kanan waking up in her own body again, wondering about this phenomenon. While she had fun, this was really odd in the long run. Gramps did comment about her oddness yesterday again, meaning this Riko might have switched to her body. Kanan worried this might happen again, since Riko seemed to have a piano recital coming up and, well, she had absolutely no idea how to play it!!!
Riko reading the small paragraph in her sketchbook, agreeing with Kanan's concerns and was grateful that Kanan had written a few things to make note of at home. Apparently Kanan added a lot of seaweed and fish pieces in miso soup, the way the Matsuuras enjoyed it. It was a secret recipe so Kanan asked Riko not to tell anyone. Riko was flustered by the thought of ‘secret just between us’ but was then saddened by how she didn’t have anyone to share secrets with anyway. She would like to become friends with Kanan but quickly brushed away the idea. They needed to figure out a way to live as normally as possible until they figured out how and why this weird switch happened. She was bewildered at PE that she was selected to be basketball team captain?!?! And learned that apparently Kanan pulled quite a few… handsome moves yesterday, some even called her ikemen, much to her exasperation. A classmate even told her that Kanan (while in Riko’s body) accidentally kabedon’d someone. Riko had very mixed feelings about this. When she went home, she wrote down a few pointers on sticky notes at the door so Kanan would see them the first thing when she woke up after the switch. They needed to properly correspond and keep each other updated, and perhaps stop doing ‘extra things’. ---------------- Next day, Riko was back in Kanans’ body. She was much better with the chores around the shop today. She was pleased when Gramps didn't comment on the miso soup this time, since she cooked it the way Kanan instructed. A black-haired girl came, Riko thought she was a customer, so she smiled at her in greeting. The girl however asked "Who are you?" right off the bat. Riko stunned and nervous but tried to play cool. However the girl was adamant. "You are not Kanan-san." Gramps peeked out of the shop, smiling at her. "Oh Dia-chan! You've come to drop off notes for Kanan again? Ahh so much effort, I'm really grateful she has a friend like you! Come in for some tea!" Dia politely declined and pulled Riko away to the side and kabedon’d her. “Who are you? Where is Kanan-san?”
Kanan reading Riko's notes, and groaned. Apparently Dia scared Riko so much that she got teary, but at least that surprised Dia so much that she let the matter drop; Riko barely managed to convince Dia that she had a cold, so that was why she was acting weird. As if on cue, Dia called her just after her tea ceremony lesson. Kanan was really glad that this body switch thing is never consecutive otherwise the secret would be out for sure. Kanan really in a dilemma. She won't be able to play piano as Sakurauchi Riko, and Riko won't be able to take in customers who wanted to go diving. This can't go on for long, they must find a solution. ------- Riko blinking at the question in her sketchbook - Kanan asked to meet up, asking her if it was alright for Kanan to use her body to come to Uchiura the next weekend, so they can talk face to face, and finally meet for the first time.
Riko nervous but also excited about coming to Uchiura. Kanan met up with her at the Numazu Station, and unlike her, she seemed perfectly at ease. Riko admired how Kanan easily diffused the tension between them and introduced Uchiura to her as they rode the bus together. The scenery felt foreign yet also familiar. Riko found that they were similar in the way that they preferred not to stand out, yet Kanan had a special presence whether she wanted to or not. If she had to, she would compare Kanan to the sea - gentle, calm and accepting, yet with grand presence that captured her attention. Riko found herself hanging onto the taller girl’s every word as she talked about the various landmarks and about the sea. Even then, perhaps it was from the stress of all the body switches, Riko drifted off against Kanan’s shoulder -------- Kanan was nervous and tense. She hasn’t felt this uncertain for a long time. She tried to keep things as light-hearted as possible between them yet she couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable around Riko. Not in a bad way, at least Kanan didn’t think it was a bad thing. It’s just that Riko was a fashionable city girl, pretty and dainty, while she was this country girl who probably broke all rules of decorum by being so friendly and forward with Riko even though they were technically strangers. And now, Riko has fallen asleep against her shoulder and she has no idea what to do. Still, Kanan truly admired Riko’s courage to come down all the way from Tokyo. To be honest, Kanan has mixed feelings about finding a resolution to this body switch. She rather enjoyed getting to know Riko and didn’t want their connection to end. Carefully, she pulled Riko against her so that the latter’s head would rest more comfortably against her shoulder. Kanan indulged herself in feeling Riko’s presence beside her and decided to let Riko sleep until they reached their stop.
Kanan showing Riko around Awashima and took her diving. Kanan iwas very pleased by how much Riko enjoyed it, in spite of how nervous she was of the sea at first. She felt proud to be able to make Riko smile. Kanan then took her up to the Bentei Shrine, and explained that she would come here every day even though she didn’t avidly pray. Although, she did pray for her Grandpa’s recovery. She also confided in Riko that, when things got really rough one day, she actually came here to sulk, and fantasized what things would have been like if she had been born in a city, where everything was convenient. Riko could relate. She went to the Kanda Shrine too to pray for success from time to time. The last time she went there, she was so stressed from preparing for the piano recital that she fantasized about taking a vacation at a nice countryside with beautiful scenery. Kanan and Riko then concluded that their similar wishes might have caused the body switch; unbelievable, outlandish, but that was what actually happened. However, even with this discovery, they have no idea how to fix it.
Riko felt guilty - she actually felt relieved that this situation would have to continue on for a while until they somehow figured out the solution. She’d have an excuse to keep communicating with Kanan. After discussion, Riko agreed to stay overnight at Kanan’s place to see if they could witness something about the body switch. It was the weekend the next day, so it shouldn’t be a problem. At least, with Kanan around, the chores around the diving shop should be easier if they really did switch. After a nice dinner with Grandpa Matsuura (who teased Kanan about having a pretty ‘friend’ who came all the way from the city), Kanan took Riko back to the mountains but she took a different turn this time, to take Riko stargazing. (The telescope is named ‘Hainan 1’, given by Chika) It is during the stargazing that Riko realized that she has fallen in love with Kanan.
That’s it, I didn’t have more to this outline _(:3」∠)_

“… Iam God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand ….”—Isaiah 46:9-10
The history of the Holy Roman Empire—and the truth that it was created, led and exploited in each manifestation by the Catholic Church—is beyond dispute. It is proven true by recorded history, thorough scholarship, and museums and archaeological excavations full of relics and artifacts.
It is now time to consider more thoroughly what the Bible reveals about the Holy Roman Empire.
In Chapters 1 and 2, we considered the Apostle John’s dramatic vision described in Revelation 17. In particular, we concentrated on the woman, or church, of Revelation 17, who was “sit[ting] upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns” (verse 3).
This church was riding—she was guiding, empowering, leading—a “beast” that had seven heads and 10 horns.
The following verses show that under this woman’s inspiration and leadership, the beast performed many cruel and mighty works. This beast was the woman’s instrument of destruction, her main vehicle for expanding her power, her chosen weapon for conquering and subjugating great portions of the Earth.
The “beast” mentioned in Revelation 17 is the Holy Roman Empire, which, as we have seen, was comprised of seven consecutive resurrections, or seven governments—or “seven heads”!
Can you believe the Holy Roman Empire was prophesied? Will you?
The Bible contains a lot of prophecy, much more than people realize. One third of the Bible is prophecy, and 90 percent of that prophecy pertains to our time. But remember, the entire Bible was completed nearly 2,000 years ago. Some of the Bible’s earliest prophecies were written 1,400 years prior.
Think about that: God forecast the major events and trends unfolding in today’s world between roughly 1,900 and 3,400 years ago. For what purpose? That is simple: to prove He is real.
Fulfilled prophecy is the greatest proof we have of God’s existence!
But think further about the audience God is especially trying to reach with fulfilled prophecy. It can only be observed and accepted by people who have seen evidence of its fulfillment. And most prophecy pertains to our time today. Many biblical prophecies have only begun to be fulfilled in the last century, especially in the last three decades.
Human beings today, more than at any other moment in history, have seen Bible prophecies fulfilled. There has never been more evidence of fulfilled prophecy. And evidence of prophecies being fulfilled is piling up weekly.
The point is, mankind today has more proof than at any other time in human history of God’s existence!
Yet sadly, mankind’s belief in the true God is practically bankrupt. Belief in the Bible has dwindled epically. Concerning God and religion, humanity is more ignorant, more confused and more hostile than ever. Humanity has almost completely lost sight of God.
The Bible is literally full of prophecies serving the same function as the Holy Roman Empire. These prophecies are clear, vivid and detailed. And they were written millennia before they were due to be fulfilled. Moreover, they exist to prove to you—right now—that God exists, that He reigns supreme, that the Bible is His Word, and that He has a plan for mankind.
Bible prophecy is truly one of God’s greatest gifts to mankind. It is proof of God’s love for mankind, and for you.
The Image of Daniel 2
Before we study further into specific prophecies about the Holy Roman Empire, we must put human history into broader prophetic context.
Daniel 2 is the key to unlocking world history. As Gerald Flurry wrote in Daniel Unlocks Revelation, “The Daniel 2 image gives an overview of history and prophecy like nothing else in the Bible. It is the main tool God uses to unlock the book of Revelation!”
In Daniel 2 we read about a detailed and riveting dream King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had in the seventh century b.c. In it, he saw a great image, or statue.
Verses 32-33 show that the statue Nebuchadnezzar saw was made of four distinct materials: “This image’s head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.”
This image was standing tall and menacing, when suddenly, a stone from outer space came hurtling down and collided with it, annihilating the image and grinding it to dust. Then this stone became a great mountain that covered the whole planet (verses 34-35).
King Nebuchadnezzar was confused and disturbed. He called in his magicians and soothsayers, and demanded that they tell him what he had dreamed and then give its interpretation. The magicians had no idea what Nebuchadnezzar’s dream was about, let alone what it might have meant.
Residing in Babylon at the time was a Jew named Daniel, a young prophet with the God-given talent to interpret dreams. Through Daniel, God explained to King Nebuchadnezzar that his dream was actually a prophecy of future world events.
“Thou, O king,” Daniel began, “art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. … Thou art this head of gold” (verses 37-38). How clear: King Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian-Chaldean Empire, which we can read about in history books, was the head of gold.
Daniel continued: “And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth. And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken” (verses 39-42).
Daniel was prophesying the succession of four world-ruling empires. The first, symbolized by the head of gold, was Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonian-Chaldean Empire of the seventh century b.c. The second, symbolized by the chest and arms of silver, was the Medo-Persian Empire, which lasted from the sixth century to the mid-fourth century b.c. The third, symbolized by the belly of bronze, was the Greek Empire, which emerged in the fourth century b.c. The fourth, symbolized by two legs of iron—picturing two distinct regions, east and west—was the Roman Empire, which began in 31 b.c.
Now, check your history. You will find that the succession of these empires is recognized and chronicled in detail in history books the world over. Of course, other civilizations and peoples, many of them influential and impressive, existed concurrently, but these four were the dominant civilizations of their time.
What is amazing is that you can prove the fulfillment of this biblical prophecy by checking the contents page of most Western civilization textbooks!
Daniel’s Beasts
The four successive world-ruling empires identified in Daniel 2 are also identified in Daniel 7. But here God uses different symbolism. In Daniel 7 the four empires are pictured by “four great beasts.” The first, the Babylonian-Chaldean Empire, is “like a lion, and had eagle’s wings” (verse 4). The second, the Medo-Persian Empire, is typed by a bear (verse 5). In verse 6 the Greek Empire is symbolized by a leopard with four wings, depicting a kingdom with terrific speed and agility. (Remember how fast Alexander the Great blazed across Asia Minor and the Mideast?)
Now notice how Daniel 7 describes the fourth beast. It is totally unique. Verse 7 says, “behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.”
The beast depicting the terrifying Roman Empire isn’t symbolized by a known animal, like a lion, bear or leopard—but by a unique-looking beast, unlike any normal animal. Notice too, this beast has 10 horns. These horns represent 10 successive administrations, or resurrections, of the Roman Empire.
Next we come to a pivotal truth.
In verse 8, Daniel continues describing the fourth 10-horned beast that symbolizes the Roman Empire. “I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.” Clearly this “little horn” is separate from the 10.
But notice: This powerful little horn comes on the scene after the first three horns, or administrations. In fact, this “little horn,” this administration, plucks up—it overcomes and destroys—the first three horns. In verse 20, Daniel explains this prophecy: “And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.”
The Hebrew word translated “stout” means “captain, chief, great, lord, master.” This “little horn” is clearly a powerful and commanding institution. And it begins ruling over the last seven horns after it destroys the first three.
The identity of this “little horn” is obvious: It is the Roman Catholic Church, which began leading the Holy Roman Empire after the demise of the three Goth tribes that dominated Rome in the fifth century.
“God reveals so much in this one scripture,” Mr. Flurry wrote. “This verse depicts the 10 horns that grow out of the fourth beast—the Roman Empire. It depicts a ‘little horn’—a great false church—coming on the scene after three horns are plucked up. The church directed the violent uprooting of the barbarians. The three horns picture three governments (the Heruli, the Vandals and the Ostrogoths) that came and went, and then suddenly the whole configuration changed from that point forward: The great church guided every succeeding resurrection of this Roman Empire, in an unprecedented church-state relationship” (Daniel Unlocks Revelation). If you are interested in really proving this prophecy and understanding it deeply, request and read this free booklet.
Notice what Mr. Flurry wrote next: “God revealed to Herbert W. Armstrong that this verse was the key to European history. So European history is tied to Daniel’s image. The last seven horns comprise a church-state relationship, which began in a.d. 554—led by Justinian. Once you understand that, it is much easier to see where it is. Europe was ruled by a church-state relationship and is unique in this way. That is a super-critical key to understanding its past. This combine is called the Holy Roman Empire. It has produced the most destructive church-state relationship in human history!” (emphasis added).
The message of Daniel 7:8 must underpin our study of European history, and specifically the history of the Holy Roman Empire. It is a counterpart to Revelation 17, though it was written almost 600 years before the book of Revelation.
Read the remainder of Daniel 7: After rising up to destroy the first three horns, this “little horn” stays around to guide and influence the last seven horns, which represent seven resurrections of the Roman Empire. These seven resurrections—each under the spiritual and moral influence of the “little horn”—comprise the seven resurrections of the Holy Roman Empire.
Revelation 13
About 600 years after God inspired the Prophet Daniel to write these prophecies, He added to them through the Apostle John, who wrote the book of Revelation.
In Revelation 13, the Apostle John discusses two distinct beasts. The first, described in verses 1 to 10, has features similar to those described by Daniel. The first beast of Revelation 13 looks slightly different from the four distinct beasts described in Daniel 7, but depicts the same four world-ruling empires, including the 10 horns of the Roman Empire, described in Daniel 7.
Verses 11 to 18 describe the second beast of Revelation 13. Verse 11 says, “And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.” What powerful symbolism. This beast appears harmless and enticing, like a lamb. But when it speaks, it is terrifying and dangerous, like a dragon. The institution represented by this beast looks peaceful and altruistic, but it is vicious and cruel.
A dragon in biblical symbolism represents Satan the devil (e.g. Revelation 12). This beast is Satan’s creation. It is his primary instrument for deceiving mankind and seeking to destroy the true followers of God.
What does this second beast of Revelation 13 represent? Herbert Armstrong explains in his booklet Who or What Is the Prophetic Beast? “This second beast of Revelation 13 is also pictured in Revelation 17 as the harlot woman who rode the beast. This fallen woman, or church, is different from all other churches in one respect. She is organized as a civil government, as well as an ecclesiastical church. Nations of the world send ambassadors to her, the same as they do the capitals of other nations.”
The second beast of Revelation 13 dominates the world (verses 12-18). It violently and cruelly forces humans into submission and worship. It seeks to extinguish its opponents. It is inspired and fueled by Satan and his demons, who infuse it with the power to do “great wonders” and many “miracles.”
Revelation 17: the All-important Chapter
To understand the specifics of the Holy Roman Empire, Revelation 17 is the key chapter. The Holy Roman Empire is its theme. It is different from Daniel 2 and 7 and Revelation 13 as it discusses only the last seven resurrections of the Roman Empire. Once again, just as He did in Daniel 2 and 7 and Revelation 13, God reveals the truth about the Holy Roman Empire by causing the Apostle John to see a vivid and dramatic beast.
Before God revealed this image, He sent an angel who explained to John what he was about to see. “… Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication” (Revelation 17:1‑2). This image was about a great false religion that deceived the world—and, by spiritual deception, ruled kings, or governments.
Next, read for yourself what John saw in vision: “[A]nd I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns” (verse 3). Notice, there are two distinct parts to this image: a “woman,” or church—and a “scarlet coloured beast” with seven heads and 10 horns, upon which the woman rode.
We now know the identities of both the woman and the beast. “The seven heads symbolize the seven dynasties or historic peaks of the Holy Roman Empire,” wrote Mr. Armstrong in the January 1979 Plain Truth. “The 10 horns are 10 kings or nations comprising this empire at the time of its seventh stage.” Verse 9 explains further what these seven heads represent: “The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.” In the Bible, a mountain is a symbol for a government.
Each “head” of this Revelation 17 beast represents a distinct administration, or government!
As we have proven in this book, together these seven successive governments comprise the beast of Revelation 17. The first head, or government, was Emperor Justinian and the Imperial Restoration of a.d. 554; the second, Emperor Charlemagne and the Frankish Empire of a.d. 774; the third, Otto the Great and the Holy Roman Empire in 962; the fourth, the Habsburg dynasty of the early 16th century; the fifth, Napoleon’s kingdom in the early 19th century; the sixth, the German-Italian axis ultimately responsible for World War ii.
The seventh head, or government, which is comprised of 10 horns, or 10 kings, is now coalescing in Europe!
But remember what the most distinguishing and important feature of the Revelation 17 beast is! Read it again in verses 3-5: “I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast …. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth.”
Never forget that image, for it is the key that unlocks the history of Europe and future world events!
This seven-headed beast is inspired, guided and exploited by a great false religion. This false religion is the woman of Revelation 17—she is responsible for guiding each of the seven governments of the Holy Roman Empire. More than any other secular power or individual, this woman, who is under the influence of Satan the devil—the god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4)—is responsible for the unspeakable atrocities committed by the Holy Roman Empire.
Also, we cannot forget the reason this woman-beast alliance exists. Revelation 17:6 says, “And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus ….” In Daniel 7:25 this religion is symbolized by a “little horn” that shall “speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High ….”
This is a vital truth: Satan the devil raised up the Catholic Church and the Holy Roman Empire as his primary weapon for destroying the true saints of God! Think about that. How can Catholicism be God’s true religion when the Bible says the Catholic Church exists to oppose and destroy the true Church?
If you want to find God’s true Church, look for a Church that is being persecuted by the Catholic Church and the Holy Roman Empire! Look for the Church that is exposing the truth about the Catholic Church and the Holy Roman Empire.
The Fifth Kingdom?
Before we finish, we must consider a vital component—in fact, the most important—of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in Daniel 2. This part of the dream is often overlooked or ignored, but it is by far the most exciting. One can be intrigued and excited by the symbolism of the image, by the head of gold and the other three materials—and the fact that these four parts explain world history—and fail to think much about this image’s ultimate fate.
Read it for yourself: “Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth” (Daniel 2:34-35).
There is far greater depth in those two scriptures than most people know.
These two verses discuss the entire gospel message! They show us that God has a plan for mankind!
What does the “stone” that is “cut out without hands” represent? The Bible reveals that it is Jesus Christ!
Ephesians 2:20 says that God’s Church is built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, “Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.” In 1 Corinthians 10:4 Christ is identified as “that spiritual Rock.”
This stone flying in from heaven and destroying the image pictures the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
In Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, this stone—after smashing the image and grinding it so thoroughly that the dust of iron, clay, brass, silver and gold blow away and vanish—transforms into a “great mountain” that “fills the whole earth.” Daniel explains this: “And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever” (Daniel 2:44).
When Jesus returns, after demolishing the cruel, savage kingdoms of man, He will establish on Earth the eternal Kingdom of God!
Daniel 7 describes the same course of events. After describing the four beasts—each corresponding to the four parts of the statue in Daniel 2—the prophet explains what happens after the time allotted to the Roman Empire expires. “And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him” (Daniel 7:27).
The final human kingdom—the seventh resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire—will be replaced by the Kingdom of God.
This eternal kingdom will be ruled by Jesus Christ and the “saints of the most High.” In addition to Christ, there will be other God beings sitting on the throne with Christ establishing and reigning over the everlasting Kingdom of God! (Revelation 3:21; 20:4-6).
This is the very gospel message that Christ preached! (Mark 1:14-15).
The same people that the Holy Roman Empire worked so hard to destroy will be ruling in the Kingdom of God. Their victory is prophesied!
Can you begin to fathom what God is teaching us here?
Isn’t it marvelous how Bible prophecy and world history—how the Daniel 2 image and the beasts of Daniel 7 and Revelation 13 and 17—how the history of the Holy Roman Empire, and the shocking truth about the Roman Catholic Church—actually prove the existence of God, and reveal the stunning, incredibly positive and hopeful truth about the coming Kingdom of God?
When you truly understand this, world events and Bible prophecy come alive. Why? Because they reveal that there is a God in heaven and the dawning of a new future for mankind.
Think seriously about this: Bible prophecy and world history—even the inglorious and frightening history and prophecy about the Holy Roman Empire—are fundamentally a hope-filled, inspiring message about the gospel of God.
More than any other, this is the great lesson we must take from the Holy Roman Empire: The history of this empire proves God’s existence; it proves the Bible is true and accurate; and it proves that the establishment on this Earth of the Kingdom of God is just ahead.
There is no more exciting, positive message than that!
The Deadly ‘Wound’
In Revelation 13, the Apostle John describes a beast that looks very similar to the fourth beast of Daniel 7. Both beasts represent the fourth world-ruling empire, the Roman Empire of 31 b.c. to a.d. 476. As John depicts it, this beast includes the most powerful characteristics of all the beasts that preceded it. It had seven heads, but the only head existing at the time John saw it was that of the fourth beast of Daniel, containing the seventh head, and also the 10 horns.
Revelation 13:3 describes “one of his heads as it were wounded to death.” The head that was wounded was that picturing the Roman Empire, which also had 10 horns. These horns, as Daniel makes clear, represent 10 successive governments of the Roman Empire that were to continue until the establishment of the Kingdom of God at Jesus Christ’s Second Coming.
What was the “wound” John described? This deadly wound was inflicted on the Roman Empire when, in its last decaying stages, the barbarians overran the city of Rome, temporarily ending its government in a.d. 476. At that moment, for the first time since its creation, the Roman Empire was not ruled by a Roman. The empire was wounded and effectively dead!
Study the history. The Roman Empire in Northern Africa was overrun by the Vandals, who sacked Rome in 455. Then in 476, Odoacer set up his government at Rome, called the Heruli. But this regime did not heal the deadly wound, for it was not a Roman government, but one of foreign barbarians. Then came the kingdom of the Ostrogoths, from 493 to 554—another foreign people that ruled in the territory. They were subsequently driven out of Italy, and they disappeared.
These three kingdoms were the first three horns, or governments. These three kingdoms sweeping into the Roman territory filled the period known in history as the “transition age” (see Ancient History by Philip Van Ness Myers). It was a transition between the wound and the healing.
But notice: Revelation 13:3 says the wound would be “healed” and the Roman Empire would continue.
In Daniel’s prophecy in Daniel 7, we see another “little horn” arise and pluck up the first three horns, which symbolized those three barbarian tribes that ruled Rome (Daniel 7:8). This left seven horns to come. Of the little horn, Daniel 7 says his “look was more stout than his fellows” (verse 20). The Hebrew word for “stout” means “captain, chief, great, lord, master.”
This horn represents the Catholic Church, which completely dominated all the horns to follow.
When was the “wound” healed? It was when the barbarian tribes were ousted from Rome. This occurred in a.d. 554, when “Justinian, emperor of the East, from Constantinople, set up his government through an Imperial Legate at Ravenna, Italy, and brought about what is known as the ‘Imperial Restoration’ of the empire” (Herbert W. Armstrong, Who or What Is the Prophetic Beast?) (see Chapter 2).
The 73rd Emperor of the Fourth World Empire
On that famous Christmas in a.d. 800, the pope crowned Charlemagne “73rd emperor of the fourth world empire.” Why the fourth empire? The idea did not originate with this pope. Many scholars and theologians knew at the time that the Roman Empire was the fourth world-ruling kingdom. Many even identified this fourth kingdom with the one the Prophet Daniel spoke of. In fact, centuries before, while the old Roman Empire still existed, most Jews and Christians thought it would be the world’s last kingdom because of Daniel’s prophecy.
That is why Europeans and Catholics kept trying to revive the empire: The Bible said there would only be four empires.
Though many scholars knew the Roman Empire was prophesied to be the final world empire, beyond that, they tragically misinterpreted Bible prophecies. That is what led to so much violence and bloodshed during the Middle Ages.
People falsely assumed that the antichrist would emerge on the world scene once the Roman Empire was extinguished. What the Bible actually says is that after the fourth empire passes from the scene, God’s Kingdom will be set up (Daniel 2:44).
This also was misinterpreted because people during the Middle Ages assumed the Holy Roman Empire was God’s Kingdom on Earth! That elevated their laws and aspirations for world rule above God’s. Thus, the groundwork for the tragedy of the Middle Ages was laid—not upon a holy empire, but upon Satan-inspired, gross misinterpretations of God’s Word.
The Germans, more than any other people, felt it their divine duty to preserve this “Holy” Roman Empire so that “antichrist” might not appear. So time and again, when the empire sank into decay, it would somehow muster enough strength to again raise itself—usually behind one powerful leader, oftentimes German, supported by a powerful religious head in Rome.
What the people of these empires also failed to understand was that these same Roman resurrections were themselves prophesied in the Bible!
Scripture does foretell of four, and only four, world-ruling empires. But that final empire, after it was crushed in a.d. 476, was prophesied to rise seven more times, which would be in conjunction with the papal authority in Rome as the resurrected “Holy Roman Empire.” It was that same Roman Empire, under new names and titles, that again rose up during the 20th century under German dominance, and that awaits one last resurrection, again prodded by a strong European hand, probably German.

Chapter 7 : Mandela Effect
Story is available on Wattpad, Solved
When we arrived at the hospital, Officer Jones was already talking to Simon. He was still sad about Kathryn’s death but Officer Jones was trying to cheer him up so we can find the murderer.
“You need to think about the crime scene Simon. You’re the only one who can help us now.” Ethan was motivating him but Simon was guilty, “I want to but I can’t. Everytime I recall that day, I always blame myself for my sister’s death. We are orphans, my sister is my only family. Our parents were gone a few years ago and we were under the care of our uncle but my sister worked as a part timer to earn money. She wanted me to have a life like a normal kid with a complete family. I shouldn’t have ran out of the house.”
“Simon, he was armed and stronger than you. You were no match for him. We believe your sister will be happy if you help her find out who the murderer is and put him behind the bars.” I tried to encourage him while signalling Ethan to help me.
“Yeah. We think the murderer is a serial killer. If you can help us, we will be able to stop him from further murders and there won’t be people like you losing their family members.”
“Okay. I’ll try to recall what happened.” Simon agreed to help us.
“Can you tell us what happened that day?” Ethan asked him.
“My sister, Kathryn and I were walking back home from school. She studies at the high school next to the middle school I study at. When we reached home, there was a knock on the door, so I opened the door and saw a tall, white man at the doorstep. He pointed a knife at me and ordered me to tie my sister at her wrists then ankles. I tried to tie them loosely so she can break free but he saw what I was doing and started punching me. My sister broke free and attacked him but he stabbed her in the gut. I tried to stop him but he shot me in the arm then tied my sister at her wrists and ankles again. I got his knife and charged at him but he shot me in the head. I knew I needed to get help, I wasn’t his match. So I ran out of the house to seek for help but I was too late. He had killed her.” Simon was sobbing as he was explaining.
Officer Jones petted his shoulder to reassure him, “You are a strong boy Simon, you are helping you sister.”
Ethan needed more information about the murderer, “Simon, can you describe how did the murderer looked like?”
“He was tall and white, nothing special about him physically.”
“Have you seen him before?”
“No. He’s definitely not from our neighbourhood.”
“Did he have a tattoo or scar on his face?”
“No. I don’t recall him having any of those.”
“Thank you for your cooperation Simon.”
Still none of us have a direction of where to continue our investigation. Everything seems to be halted at the “tall, white man” part. Residents of the city are concerned as someone had committed a crime in their neighbourhood. Though the other neighbourhoods where the Davis and Pauline was murdered was far from this neighbourhood but news spread fast with the help of internet. Especially if the cases were unsolved.
“Guys, look!” Officer Jones gathered his subordinates with Ethan and I at a discussion room. He placed today’s evening paper on the table. A local news station had publish an article on the front page of the paper. He continued, “Now everyone in the city is talking about this.”
I opened a social media app on my phone and sure do it was on the headline with tons and tons of netizens commenting their doubt on the capability of the police. It was the talk of the city with people guessing who the murderer is. It was terrorising the city with them constantly aware that there is a killer among them.
We were back at the detective agency but I was confused, “Hey Ethan, was Simon lying?” “No, he wasn’t. In fact none of them were lying. I know what you are thinking.” I believed Ethan when he said the both of them weren’t lying as he had been studying body language for quite some time. This is one of the reasons why Officer Jones trusts him and lets him ask the suspects questions.
“But if none of them were lying, why were their descriptions different?” I raised an eyebrow while asking Ethan.
“Perhaps it’s the Mandela Effect.”
“What is that?”
“Mandela Effect?”
“Yeah.”
“Okay, first let me ask you a few questions. What does the Queen say everytime she wants to ask the mirror something?”
“Mirror, mirror on the wall.”
“What is the cartoon that has Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Sylvester?”
“Looney Toons.”
“Great. Spell it.”
“L-O-O-N-E-Y T-O-O-N-S”
“Now, tell me what is the last sentence for the song “We Are The Champions.”
“I don’t get it Ethan. I asked for an explanation on Mandela Effect not a freaking trivia.”
“I am proving to you Mandela Effect is a real thing. It is false memory as the human brain is highly unreliable. Remember how you said the Queen from Snow White said mirror, mirror on the wall? Actually she said magic mirror on the wall.”
“What?” I shook my head in disbelief.
“And you spelt Looney Tunes as L-O-O-N-E-Y T-O-O-N-S, it was actually T-U-N-E-S.” Surprising right?”
I was out of words and nodded as Ethan continued, “Either Ryan or Simon has false memory on the murderer’s facial features. They weren’t lying because in their memory it was like that. They were just stating the facts based on their memory. It’s just that their memory isn’t completely accurate.”
“Gosh! How are we going to trace the murderer now?” I’ve never felt so lost before. So was Ethan, he was so used to being able to solve cases in days but all 3 cases so far, we have no idea what to do.
Ethan wrote every possible information on the whiteboard and pictures on the table. We tried to relate the murderer’s motive so we can hopefully save the next victim. To us, these cases are obviously related.
3 months had passed. The cases should’ve been filed into the unsolved case file but Ethan didn’t want to give up. He felt in his heart that it was his responsibility as a detective to solve the cases and put the culprits behind the bars.
Initially residents of the city were worried will there be another murder case but nothing happened for 3 consecutive months. They started to calm down while we were puzzled. The culprit is obviously a serial killer. That was the thing that bothered us because one thing about serial killers and it is they cannot stop killing. Once they had murdered someone and got the feeling of excitement and satisfaction, they can no longer stop killing people. It’s like a drug addiction. Which was why we were puzzled.

The Art of Copywriting: How to Write Better Captions that Get Engagement
What you’re trying to do, when you tell a story, is to write about an event in your life that made you feel some particular way. And what you’re trying to do, when you tell a story, is to get the audience to have that same feeling. – Pete Docter
While we don’t typically associate the art of copywriting with social media captions, the two are deeply intertwined.
A really good caption informs us about the things we cannot immediately see and encourages us to look at an image or video more closely.
From specific writing techniques to the psychology behind bringing your stories and captions to life, you’ll leave today’s episode with several new copywriting tactics and strategies to try.
The Art of Copywriting: How to Write Better Captions that Get Engagement

Factors that make for great captions
Principles of effective copywriting
3 top copywriting techniques to improve results
Let’s dive in!
A brief overview of storytelling
Stories don’t always look like what you might find in a  Jane Austin novel or in The New York Times.
The Story Spine by Pixar
Today on social media, stories come in the form of captions, videos, photos, and text. Or as we see most often, a caption plus a video or a photo.
The caption could be multiple lines or it could be one sentence or even one word. The most important part, no matter the length of the caption, is that you’re trying to get the audience to feel something.
One way you can do this is to pull apart the stories you like. Self knowledge and awareness are at the the root of all great storytelling.
Before posting to social media ask critical questions like:
What will my audience think?
What will my audience feel?
How will they react to this content?
Will they find it entertaining, or is it just entertaining to me?
The ability to identify with audiences and post content that reflects those feelings and beliefs is one of the most underrated skills of today’s top social media managers.
Factors that make for great captions
One of the first steps in relating to our audience on a deeper level and increasing engagement on social media is simply writing better captions.
First, let’s define what a social media caption is:
A caption in its simplest form is the the title of an image or video. A full caption takes the form of descriptive text, usually a few words or sentences.
A really good caption informs us about the things we cannot immediately see and encourages us to look at the image or video more closely.
There relationship is mutually beneficial and there is dependence between a well written caption and the content.
The caption can bring the content to life by providing context and meaning. It is also the link between the article/story/text and the image.
A good caption is a piece of writing that should be concise, accurate, informative and as carefully crafted as the image itself.
For marketers it’s absolutely vital to get the caption right. A great caption can help sell an image or video and equally, a bad caption can make people scroll right past it.
Above all keep it simple and check that facts are 100 percent accurate.
Principles of effective copywriting
Now that we have a more specific definition of what a caption is and what it’s not, let’s discuss about how to improve your captions.
Simpler, shorter copywriting
First and foremost, it’s the more often than not, simpler, shorter captions will generate the most engagement.
Examining the world’s largest brand accounts like Nike, 9Gag, Chanel, or Tasty, their visuals are stunning, but they’re captions are equally as captivating.
If you find that you tend to write longer captions, practice editing them down so that you get your point across in the fewest words possible.

Watch till the end! 60 seconds isn’t quite the best format for this, but it’s still fun to watch! What’s the most satisfying part of this video to you?! . This is the process of taking a 3d animation and mapping it’s frames onto a circular grid of a curved surface The question I get the most is “what software do you use?”. In this piece I used @maxonc4d to animate a 120 frame rotating cube. I then used @photoshop to convert the frames into individual images, which were each manually vector traced in @adobe Illustrator. I then used Illustrator to shrink each consecutive frame making the linear cube animation travel outwards from a center and slowly disappear. At this point I essentially have a flip book style animation, but you can see every page at the same time! Illustrator was then used to convert the flat design into a multi wedge based stencil where each wedge was slightly modified to fit into a curved surface. The stencils were exported as cad files and machine cut with a @silhouette.inc Cameo cutter. I’m using all of these tools out of the box with no plugins. Materials used are @lagunaclay 16 porcelain, sign vinyl which sticks incredibly well to @diamondcoretools sanded clay, and black engobe slip. The use of digital tools plays a large role in my work, but they will never remove the intense manual efforts that go into each and every piece. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the use of modern technology on ceramics! #pottery #potteryvideos #instapottery #potsinaction #clay #ceramics #motion #motiongraphics #motiondesign #graphicdesign #design #cube #illustrator #illusion #opticalillusion #zoetrope #porcelain #bowl #handmade #process #stencil #pattern #spiral #geometric #cinema4d #3danimation #adobeillustrator #adobephotoshop #photoshop

“Writing is human but editing is divine.” – Stephen King
In other words, cut out the fluff and get right to the heart of the message.
One way to do this is to avoid using too many adverbs. Most adverbs, especially adverbs ending in -ly can be removed from your caption. For example:
A mountain isn’t incredibly pretty – it’s beautiful.
The shoes aren’t really expensive – they’re plush.
The donuts aren’t exceedingly delicious – they’re delectable.
Spend time finding the right words to avoid using adverbs as crutches.
Flesch-Kincaid Index
The other aspect of simpler, shorter captions is the simpler part. I think it’s fun to think about this in terms of the Flesch-Kincaid Index, which is a test to rate how difficult a piece of writing would be to comprehend.
Three factors determine the test’s score: total sentences, total words, and total syllables.
Contently wrote a great article back in 2015 that looked at some of the most famous novels throughout history and what their Flesch-Kincaid Index levels are.
What they found was that legendary novels from authors like Cormac McCarthy, Jane Austin, Tim Ferris, J.K. Rowling, Hemingway, and countless others are at a 7th to 8th grade reading level.
In fact, 75 percent of U.S. adults read just above a 5th grade reading level and 50 percent of U.S. adults read at an 8th grade reading level. Only about 12 percent of U.S. adults read at a 12th grade level or higher.
Quick tips for copywriting and readability:
Use short words whenever possible.
State your thoughts as simply as you can.
Keep your sentences short. How short? Real short!
Narrative Urgency
Narrative urgency means that every sentence must serve a purpose.
Your first sentence must make the reader want to read the second.
The second sentence must propel the reader to the third. So forth and so on until the very end. If a sentence doesn’t move the narrative forward—if it doesn’t make the writing more urgent—then it must be cut, no matter how clever or precious it seems.
This is also a good tip for those that have found success with longer captions.
While shorter captions tend to perform the best on social, there are definitely brands that have built a brand by telling stories with their captions.
Facts and figures
When in doubt, start with science!
Share facts, figures, data, and statistics to lure your audience in. Using facts and data help take your ideas from abstract to concrete.
Copywriters have been using this technique for ages. They know they must make their copy believable, and instead of fighting with rational ideas, they simply show facts and numbers.
At Buffer, simply using numbers has been shown to increase downloads and traffic. Some of our most popular podcast episodes are ones that include a concrete number or the words “original research” in the title.
Data makes a huge difference and can be utilized in so many creative ways.
3 top copywriting tips to improve results
1. Punctuation. Is. Pace.
To add variety and cadence to your writing, play around with different punctuation: periods, commas, dashes, colons, semicolons. Short sentences communicate tension. Longer run-on sentences, on the other hand, help establish a frantic, hurried rhythm.
2. Expand your vocabulary to make your writing more precise
As the old saying goes, there’s no need to use a ten-dollar word when a ten-cent word will suffice. But having more tools in your toolbox will allow you to select the most appropriate tool for the job.
3. Don’t waste the reader’s time
Their time and attention are two of their most precious resources. We don’t want to force a reader to spend three minutes reading something that we could’ve and should’ve communicated in 30 seconds. If you want to earn your reader’s trust, don’t waste their time.
Summing up what makes a really good caption:
Put simply, a good caption is one that provides context, adds personality, and inspires your followers to take action in the shortest time possible.

What follows is a detailed summary of the episode transcript. Feel free to jump around and explore the art of copywriting in this week’s Science of Social Media:
A brief overview of storytelling
Factors that make for great captions

They’re each famous for different reasons. But as kids, these women wore the same uniform.
When was the last time a Girl Scout inspired you to follow your dreams?
If your answer involves dreaming of Girl Scout cookies, then I don't blame you — getting your hands on those Thin Mints can be a real motivator.
But what you may not realize is that Girl Scouts have influenced the world in much bigger ways that don't involve their awesome cookies. In fact, some Girl Scouts have changed the course of history.
We're talking astronauts, political leaders, activists, and more. Girl Scouts of the USA reports that an incredible 64% of today's American women leaders were once Girl Scouts.
Image via Girl Scouts of the USA.
This organization helps girls understand what they're capable of by giving them badges for accomplishments in areas such as entrepreneurship, citizenship, and STEM. The girls practice an incredible range of skills, from running a business to creating art to tackling cybersecurity.
And if their roster of prominent former scouts is any indication, every Girl Scout is capable of greatness. Here's a look at seven of them.
1. Lucille Ball created her own space in an industry that hadn't yet made space for her.
When a Girl Scout named Elizabeth dressed up as Lucille Ball in 2017, she wasn't just wearing a costume. Ball was a former Girl Scout, and Elizabeth was portraying her spirit and determination in a Girl Scout photo shoot celebrating Women's History Month.
Lucille Ball cracked people up with her wacky physical comedy, her expressive face, and her "I Love Lucy" character's knack for getting into hilariously troublesome situations. And while audiences laughed, Ball was making history.
She became one of the first female comic leads on television and often defied traditional gender stereotypes in her role. "I Love Lucy" was also a massive hit, ranking as the #1 show in the country for four of its six seasons.
Off-screen, Ball was also a trailblazer. She and Desi Arnaz co-owned the production studio Desilu Productions until she bought out his shares and ran it on her own. That made her the first woman to run a major television studio. And the hits that came later on her lot, like "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Star Trek," and "Mission: Impossible," show that she did a fantastic job.
2. Tammy Duckworth changed what it means to be a United States senator.
In this digital age, nearly all of our senators are on Twitter, and if you follow Tammy Duckworth's account, you might have seen messages like this one: "Thanks, @girlscouts, for teaching me leadership skills I use in the Senate everyday."
Happy #GirlScoutDay! Proud to be a #GirlScout & thankful for all the lessons and skills @girlscouts taught me. I think my old uniform could use a few more badges!
A post shared by Senator Tammy Duckworth (@senduckworth) on Mar 12, 2018 at 1:07pm PDT
Duckworth still has her Girl Scout uniform and sash, which carries an impressive number of badges. The skills she learned to earn those badges no doubt helped her become the incredible trailblazer she is today.
In fact, Duckworth just can't stop making history. She served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot in Iraq, where she lost her legs in a 2004 grenade attack. In 2012, she became the first woman with a disability elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the first member of Congress born in Thailand.
Image via U.S. Senate Photographic Studio/Renee Bouchard/Wikimedia Commons.
And in 2016, she was elected to her current position, making her the second ever Asian-American woman senator.
Then Duckworth did something that the Founding Fathers probably never saw coming. In April 2018, she became the first U.S. senator to give birth while in office. At just 10 days old, baby Maile followed in her mom's footsteps by making history of her own as the first newborn to grace the Senate floor.
3. Katie Couric broke into the boys' club of nightly news anchors.
When the Girl Scouts reached their 100th anniversary in 2012, news anchor Katie Couric went all out to celebrate them. She wrote about the organization on her ABC blog, interviewed Girl Scouts on her show, and even donned a vintage Girl Scout uniform for the occasion.
"Girl Scouts taught me some of the basic and essential principles and values that I still hold dear today, like being truthful, helpful, and independent," she said in 2012.
Couric has demonstrated these values throughout her career as a journalist by bringing attention to important issues, including colon cancer and gun violence. She's also held top anchor positions at all of the three major television networks: ABC, NBC, and CBS.
Image via Girl Scouts of the USA.
Breaking into the news industry's boys' club took some time, but she never gave up. She started at the ABC News bureau in 1979 and eventually became the host of the CBS Evening News in 2006, making her the first solo woman anchor among the "big three" weekday nightly news broadcasts, according to Reuters.
Now, as a Television Hall of Famer and a New York Times bestselling author, Couric continues to use her platform to show girls that it's possible to overcome the obstacles they face.

4. Susan Collins has set the second longest consecutive voting streak in the Senate.
Growing up in Caribou, Maine, now-Sen. Susan Collins had some great role models: Both her parents served as the mayors of her hometown. Not only that, but she was also a Girl Scout with some amazing troop leaders who inspired her to always persevere toward her goals. "[Girl Scouts] helps to build strong women," Collins told a young scout who interviewed her in 2014.
In 1994, when Collins ran for governor, she became the first woman to become a nominee for a major party in Maine. Then, in 1996, Collins was elected to the Senate, and she has kept her seat ever since.
Image via U.S. Senate Photographic Studio/Wikimedia Commons.
Collins is now the most senior Republican woman in the Senate. She has spent her time focusing on causes including Alzheimer's research, diabetes research, and support for small businesses. In fact, Collins has had a say in every single one of the more than 6,600 decisions that the Senate has voted on since 1996 because she has never missed a vote. In 2015, she even broke her ankle running in heels to make sure she cast a vote.
Collins is also proud to be one of 73% of women senators who were once Girl Scouts. "That to me just proves that Girl Scouts learn leadership ability, have confidence in themselves, and learn to work together as a team," she said.
5. Dolores Huerta gave us the rallying cry we need to make the world a better place.
When civil rights icon Dolores Huerta steps up to a microphone, you'd never guess that she was once a shy child. However, in a 2009 interview, Huerta credited Girl Scouts for helping her come out of her shell and learn to speak in public.
"In Girl Scouts, I learned how to be strong, to believe in myself, and to be open to new ideas," Huerta wrote to young girls.
Image via Girl Scouts of the USA.
It's no wonder she ended up coining the rallying cry "Sí se puede" — Spanish for "Yes, we can." Her work as a community organizer began in the 1960s and became a blueprint for how many activists mobilize today.
Through her advocacy for women's rights, workers' rights, and immigrant rights, Huerta influenced labor laws that we still have today. She co-founded the United Farm Workers, a labor union for farmworkers in the United States, with Cesar Chavez.
Huerta is often hailed as an inspiration for activist movements and has received a number of major awards including the 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was a Girl Scout from the ages of 8 to 18. At the age of 83, she was still continuing her community organizing work as president of the Dolores Huerta foundation.
6. Susan Wojcicki has carved out much-needed space for women and girls in tech.
Susan Wojcicki was only 11 years old when she started her first business: She went door to door selling homemade "spice ropes" made with braided yarn.
Since then, Wojcicki has proved herself as a go-getter in the world of business. For example, you may have heard of a "little" company known as Google — which started with co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in her garage in 1998. And as the company's first marketing manager, she became known as the most important person in advertising.
Image via Girl Scouts of the USA.
Wojcicki eventually became the CEO of YouTube, the second most popular website in the world — just behind its parent company, Google.
She uses her influential position to help other women and girls get into tech by collaborating with the Girl Scouts of the USA, an organization she was once a proud member of herself. She mentors Girl Scouts who are working to earn their cybersecurity badges, and she also leads Google's Made with Code, an initiative to inspire girls to get involved with tech activities like coding and 3D printing.
7. Queen Latifah is leaving her mark on every corner of the entertainment world.
Name a major award for entertainers, and Queen Latifah probably has a win or a nomination for it.
She first made her mark on the entertainment world as a rapper, releasing her first hip-hop album in 1989 at the age of 19 and kicking off her success as an MC. This is especially remarkable considering how much men have dominated the hip-hop scene. And now, she's also known for her work on television and in movies, including the 1990s hit sitcom "Living Single," the 1996 film "Set It Off," and more recently, the massively successful 2017 film "Girls Trip."
Image via Girl Scouts of the USA.
Throughout her career, she has earned a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and an Academy Award nomination. But before she released that very first album, Queen Latifah was a Girl Scout and earning badges for her sash.
Today Latifah clearly appreciates Girl Scouts for helping start off on the right foot. She narrated this video to celebrate the Girl Scouts tradition of "Preparing girls for a lifetime of leadership."
These actresses, musicians, scientists, and politicians all have one thing in common.

Perhaps the next time a woman in comedy makes you laugh or a piece of digital technology leaves you in awe, you'll think of the Girl Scouts.
Being a Girl Scout helped these women develop their leadership skills, confidence, and ambitious attitudes. In order to earn Girl Scout badges, they had to prove themselves capable of helping people. And they've certainly done so in their careers by inspiring countless other women to forge their own paths across a wide range of industries, including sports, science, philanthropy, and business.
What's more, they all uphold the Girl Scouts value of making the world a better place.
Keep their stories in mind the next time you see a Girl Scout — you might be looking at one of our future leaders.

Expect more. That’s the verdict of climate scientists to the record-high temperatures this spring and summer in vastly different climate zones.
The continental United States had its hottest month of May and the third-hottest month of June. Japan was walloped by record triple-digit temperatures, killing at least 86 people in what its meteorological agency bluntly called a “disaster.” And weather stations logged record-high temperatures on the edge of the Sahara and above the Arctic Circle.
Is it because of climate change? Scientists with the World Weather Attribution project concluded in a study released Friday that the likelihood of the heat wave currently baking Northern Europe is “more than two times higher today than if human activities had not altered climate.”
While attribution studies are not yet available for other record-heat episodes this year, scientists say there’s little doubt that the ratcheting up of global greenhouse gases makes heat waves more frequent and more intense.
Elena Manaenkova, deputy head of the World Meteorological Organization, said this year was “shaping up to be one of the hottest years on record” and that the extreme heat recorded so far was not surprising in light of climate change.
“This is not a future scenario,” she said. “It is happening now.”
What was like to be in these really different places on these really hot days? We asked people. Here’s what we learned.
Ouargla, Algeria: 124°F on July 5
At 3 p.m. on the first Thursday of July, on the edge of the vast Sahara, the Algerian oil town of Ouargla recorded a high of 124 degrees Fahrenheit. Even for this hot country, it was a record, according to Algeria’s national meteorological service.
Abdelmalek Ibek Ag Sahli was at work in a petroleum plant on the outskirts of Ouargla that day. He and the rest of his crew had heard it would be hot. They had to be at work by 7 a.m., part of a regular 12-hour daily shift.
“We couldn’t keep up,” he recalled. “It was impossible to do the work. It was hell.”
By 11 a.m., he and his colleagues walked off the job.
But when they got back to the workers’ dorms, things weren’t much better. The power had gone out. There was no air conditioning, no fans. He dunked his blue cotton scarf in water, wrung it out, and wrapped it around his head. He drank water. He bathed 5 times. “At the end of the day I had a headache,” he said by phone. “I was tired.”
Ouargla’s older residents told him they’d never seen a day so hot.
Hong Kong: Over 91°F for 16 straight days
In this city of skyscrapers on the edge of the South China Sea, temperatures soared past 91 degrees Fahrenheit for 16 consecutive days in the second half of May.
Not since Hong Kong started keeping track in 1884 had a heat wave of that intensity lasted so long in May.
Swimming pools overflowed with people. Office air-conditioners purred. But from morning to night, some of the city’s most essential laborers went about their outdoor work, hauling goods, guarding construction sites, picking up trash.
One blistering morning, a 55-year-old woman named Lin gripped the hot metal handles of her handcart. She pushed it up a busy road, glancing over her shoulder for oncoming cars. She had fresh leafy greens to deliver to neighborhood restaurants in the morning, trash to haul in the evening. Some days, she had a headache. Other days, she vomited.
“It’s very hot and I sweat a lot,” said Lin, who would only give her first name before rushing off on her rounds. “But there’s no choice, I have to make a living.”
Poon Siu-sing, a 58 year-old trash collector, tossed garbage bags into a mounting pile. Sweat plastered the shirt onto his back. “I don’t feel anything,” he maintained. “I’m a robot used to the heat of the sun and rain.”
Nawabshah, Pakistan: 122°F on April 30
Nawabshah is in the heart of Pakistan’s cotton country. But no amount of cotton could provide comfort on the last day of April, when temperatures soared past 122 degrees Fahrenheit, or 50 degrees Celsius. Even by the standards of this blisteringly hot place, it was a record.
The streets were deserted that day, a local journalist named Zulfiqar Kaskheli said. Shops didn’t bother to open. Taxi drivers kept off the streets to avoid the blazing sun.
And so, Riaz Soomro had to scour his neighborhood for a cab that could take his ailing 62-year-old father to a hospital. It was Ramadan. The family was fasting. The father became dehydrated and passed out.
The government hospital was packed. In the hallways sat worn-out heatstroke victims like his father. Many of them had been working outdoors as day laborers, Mr. Soomro said.
Throughout the area, hospitals and clinics were swamped. There weren’t enough beds. There weren’t enough medical staff. The power failed repeatedly throughout the day, adding to the chaos.
“We tried our best to provide medical treatment,” said Raees Jamali, a paramedic in Daur, a village on the outskirts of Nawabshah. “But because of severity of the heat, there was unexpected rush and it was really difficult for us to deal with all patients.”
Every day that week, the high temperature in Nawabshah was no less than 113 degrees, according to AccuWeather.
Oslo: Over 86°F for 16 consecutive days
“Warning! We remind you about the total ban on fires and barbecuing near the forest and on the islands.”
This was the text message that Oslo residents got from city officials on a Friday afternoon in June.
May had been the warmest in 100 years. June was hot, too. By mid-July, a village south of Oslo recorded 19 days when the temperature shot up past 86 degrees Fahrenheit, or 30 Celsius, according to MET Norway.
Spring rains were paltry, which meant that grass had turned brown dry and farmers were having trouble feeding their livestock. Forests had turned to tinder. And city officials put a stop to one of the most popular Norwegian summer pastimes: heading out to the woods with a disposable barbecue.
“People not being used to this heat, they’re used to leaving a barbecue and nothing happens, Marianne Kjosnes, a spokeswoman for the Oslo Fire Department, said. “Now if a little spark catches the grass, you have a grass fire going.”
Public parks are off limits to barbecuing. So are the islands in the nearby fjord. The Oslo Fire Department’s Facebook page is trying to get the word out.
Per Evenson, a fire watchman posted in the tower on Linnekleppen, a rocky hill southeast of Oslo, counted 11 separate forest fires in one day in early July. Here and there, white smoke rose in the distance. By July 19, the civil protection department had tallied 1,551 forest fires, more than the numbers of fires in all of 2016 and 2017. The department said 22 helicopters were simultaneously fighting fires.
Wildfires were also erupting in Sweden. And one Swedish village just above the Arctic Circle, hit an all time record high, peaking above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
“This is really frightening if this is the new normal,” Thina Margrethe Saltvedt, an energy industry analyst who lives in Oslo, wrote in an email.
Los Angeles: 108°F on July 6
At least Marina Zurkow had air conditioning.
Ms. Zurkow, an artist, has long been grappling with climate change in her work. But she was still surprised when a day of extreme weather impacted one of her projects in a big way.
The name of that project, which was designed to make people think about the impact of climate change on how we eat, is “Making the Best of It.” It is only half in jest.
“It’s both trying to make the best of a bad situation,” she said, “and in another way it’s a commitment to making things as delicious as possible.”
The latest iteration of that project was to host a dinner for a new era of dry, hot weather in California. Less Mediterranean, more Mojave Desert.
Ms. Zurkow’s partners, a team of two private chefs called Hank and Bean, prepared an elaborate meal designed to make their guests chew on the impact of climate change. The menu included sage fritters, stuffed rabbit, flatbreads made of cricket and mealworm, and jellyfish. Lots of jellyfish.
There was jellyfish crudo with a Greek salad at the top of the meal. There was a jellyfish jelly, with redwood tip infusion and pine syrup at the end of the meal.
Why jellyfish? Because it’s considered invasive and therefore plentiful, Ms. Zurkow reasoned. It’s also zero fat and good protein. “American dream food,” she added, also only half in jest.
They had planned to serve dinner al fresco in the courtyard of a downtown Los Angeles test kitchen.
But nature had other ideas.
That day, the first Friday of July, air from the Mojave blew westward and stalled, compressed and extra hot, over Los Angeles. Downtown hit a high of 108 degrees. It was too hot to eat outside.
“Even if you’re talking about climate change, you can’t torture invited guests,” Ms. Zurkow said. “We had to move the dinner into the kitchen.”
Somini Sengupta reported from New York and Los Angeles, Tiffany May from Hong Kong, and Zia ur-Rehman from Karachi, Pakistan.

Ramblings: Point Reaches 30 Goals; Tavares Tops 80 Points; Rangers Defencemen; Josh Manson – March 31
For as well as the Bruins have been playing, it’s easy to forget that they still have a bevy of players out of the lineup. We have some good news for Boston fans as the injured players look to be returning soon. At the least, it looks like Jake DeBrusk will be back Saturday afternoon against the Panthers. Zdeno Chara and Charlie McAvoy are not expected back on Saturday but they are not far behind. If you’re in a head-to-head league that plays through to the end of the year, reinforcements are on the way.
*
The Eeli Tolvanen Watch has ended as he’s signed a contract, practiced with the team, and looks to feature in the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Lightning. I imagine he’ll be eased in (though in practice he did take a couple rushes with the top line) so there won’t be much fantasy value for the rest of this season. There will, however, be some good scouting opportunities for next season.
*
Stephen Johns is out with a concussion for the Stars. They say it’ll be at least four or five days but there are only seven left in the season after today. I can’t imagine they bring him back from a concussion for one or two days. If you need an emergency pickup from the team, Esa Lindell played over 24 minutes after Johns was injured in their last game.
*
The return to New York of the players that had been traded to Tampa Bay was looking like it would be the biggest moment of the night. Alas, we had this:
pic.twitter.com/6C2qRPWp8N
— Shayna (@hayyyshayyy) March 30, 2018
Yes, that’s Pavel Buchnevich and Steven Stamkos fighting. You read those names right. It followed Buchnevich taking a big hit and then taking a run at Nikita Kucherov himself (and it was kind of dirty). Anyway, though Stamkos was held with a point in a game his team won 7-3, he got you 19 penalty minutes. If you’re in a multi-cat league, can you really be angry? The people who should be angry are Nikita Kucherov owners, who also was held without a point but didn’t contribute much else.
Brayden Point had a pair of goals and that gives him 30 on the year. He’s looking every bit the number-1 centre teams covet.
Filip Chytil scored his first (of what should be many) NHL goals. Mikhail Sergachev had an assist and is now one point shy of 40 on the year. Not bad for a teenager playing under 16 minutes a night!
*
TJ Oshie played most of the game in their loss to Carolina but he didn’t finish it and he apparently suffered a lower-body injury. All the coach would say after the game was that they were being very cautious and he’ll be re-evaluated on Saturday.
Two assists for Jaccob Slavin pushed him over the 30-point mark for the second consecutive season. He had three blocked shots to push him over 150 for the year for the second season in a row as well. Slavin doesn’t hit very much but all in all, not a bad multi-category season for him at all.
John Carlson assisted on Washington’s lone goal, his 50th helper of the year, the first time he’s hit that mark. It was also his 65th point of the campaign. Yeah, he’s going to get a very large contract this offseason.
*
The big boys came to play for the Leafs in their 5-4 win over the Islanders, at least offensively. All of Nazem Kadri, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner had a goal and an assist while James van Riemsdyk also scored. The two-point performance from Marner gives him 69 points on the year. He also needs one more power-play assist to reach 20 such helpers.
John Tavares scored a power-play goal which was his 34th goal of the year, a three-year high. He also cracked 80 points for the first time in three seasons. This is the bounce back year we were all hoping for last season.
Brock Nelson also scored and he’s one shy of 20 on the year. Were he to get there, he’d be one of 25 forwards (so far) to crack 20 goals in each of the previous four seasons. As he’s been pushed down the lineup his assist totals have suffered but he’s been every bit the goal scorer he’s always been.
Two assists in this game leaves Jake Gardiner two points shy of 50 on the campaign. For as high as some people have been on him for his career, I don’t think anyone saw a 50-point season on the horizon.
*
Semyon Varlamov was injured in Colorado’s win over the Blackhawks. He was crashed into by Tomas Jurco on the play and replaced by Jonathan Bernier. Jurco seemed to lose his balance driving the net from the slot and slammed into Varlamov’s left leg. Now, it was late in the game and the score was out of hand so maybe they were being cautious, but he did seem to be in a good amount of pain. When we have updates we will pass them along.
Sven Andrighetto scored for the first time since December! He finished with two goals, five shots, and over 17 minutes in ice time. He was a big part of the depth scoring earlier in the season and would go a long way in lengthening the scoring if he can return to that player for the Avs. His eight goals are a career-high, by the way.
Mikko Rantanen has a goal and an assist and has the quietest 82 points in the league. Tyson Barrie had a goal and two assists, and that gives him a career-high 55 points in just 64 games. As I’ve mentioned before in these pages, he’s one of the most elite offensive defencemen in the league that no one talks about unless it’s rumours about being traded to a Canadian team.
*
Rickard Rakell scored his 32nd of the year, one off his pace last year, and it was the overtime winner for Anaheim.
Drew Doughty scored the lone goal for the Kings, his 10th of the season. It’s three straight campaigns with at least 10 goals for the blue liner, and 7 of his 10 NHL seasons. Two of the seasons he failed to reach 10 markers were his rookie year and the lockout year. He’s now one point shy of his career-high of 59.
*
William Karlsson had a monster fantasy night as he’s known to have (this year anyway). He had a goal (short-handed), two assists (one on the OT winner), was plus-2, had four total shots on net, one blocked shot, and three hits. Line mate Marchessault had two goals, one of which was the overtime clincher.
*
At the risk of sounding redundant, can I say how impressive it’s been to watch Ryan Donato since he debuted with the Bruins? I know it’s a common trope in the media and among fans, but he genuinely looks like a middle-six winger that has been playing in the NHL for three or four years. Should the injury to Rick Nash prove even more serious and he misses playoff time, Donato is a very nice insurance policy. I’m also very optimistic for his fantasy value next year. Without Nash in the lineup – which he won’t be for 2018-19 – Donato has been earning those top power-play minutes. Second line with David Krejci and top PP unit with Bergeron and co.? Yes please.
*
With the news earlier this week that Kevin Shattenkirk would miss the rest of the season, it got me wondering: how do we value the Rangers defencemen next year?
Neal Pionk has been the point producer since be recalled with 14 points in 23 games (heading into Friday night). The bad news is that half his points have been second assists. The good news is that they have come on the power play, where he’s supplanted Brady Skjei and been given priority over John Gilmour. A healthy Shattenkirk would mean secondary PP minutes for Pionk but at least he’d have those. At the least, he’ll get first crack at the second unit in 2018-19.
Pionk not shooting is a bit of a concern as he’s shot considerably less than many other Rangers d-men. While shooting isn’t an absolute necessity for fantasy value – Keith Yandle and Jake Gardiner have shown that – it does help fill some roto categories and it’s hard to score an acceptable amount for a d-man landing fewer than two shots per game playing.
Gilmour, on the other hand, has no problem shooting the puck. He’s played just under 340 minutes at five-on-five but in that limited sample he’s taken over 16 shots per 60 minutes, one of five defencemen to do so along with Brent Burns, Yohann Auvitu, Dougie Hamilton, and Johnny Boychuk. His ice time has been taking a hit of late though, failing to crack 15 minutes in three straight games of late.
It would appear the Rangers coaching staff is higher on Pionk than Gilmour given their deployment, but the Rangers staff may not even be around next year. Nevertheless, Gilmour’s upside without power play time might be something akin to Boychuk; 5-8 goals and 25-30 points. Pionk would be a bit more on the production side with some PP points mixed in. Because of how he’s being used, I would guess Pionk would be the guy to own after Shattenkirk next season, but a lot can change between now and October. Just wanted to get some initial thoughts out.
*
Speaking of production among defencemen, I’m not sure how many people realize this but over the last three seasons, Josh Manson leads the Ducks blue line in points per 60 minutes at five-on-five (0.85) and it’s not particularly close with Cam Fowler at 0.62. Over those three seasons, league-wide, he’s tied with the likes of Shea Weber, Morgan Rielly, and Matt Niskanen. That’s pretty good company.
It’s been a fantastic season this year with 32 points and none on the power play. All those five-on-five points have him third in the league on a per-minute basis behind only Erik Karlsson and Torey Krug. He doesn’t seem to have favour with the coaches, though, at least offensively given his non-existent PP usage and the fact that even though they lost Shea Theodore in the offseason, traded Sami Vatanen, and have been fighting injuries all season, he’s still earning just about 20 minutes a game (including a lot of short-handed minutes).
With no PP time, and without additional five-on-five minutes, this season will be the high-water mark for Manson. Don’t chase these points next year in drafts.
*
Over the summer, one thing I wrote about a couple times was the dilemma of choosing William Nylander or Mitch Marner for this season. It appears as though Marner will be the right decision. For whatever reason, even when he’s in the lineup, the Auston Matthews–William Nylander PP unit can’t get it together but the Marner unit can.
So I ask Dobber heads: if you had to pick one player for a dynasty league at the end of the season, would it be Marner or Nylander? Sound off in the comments.
*
I kind of wonder what Vladimir Tarasenko’s ADP will be next year. Barring a big point binge over the balance of the season, it’ll be the first time since 2013-14 that he’ll fail to crack 70 points. He needs four more goals to crack 35 or he’ll fail to do so since that same season. He was typically a late first round pick this year but will he be next year?
You have the staples of Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, and Kucherov. Brad Marchand, Evgeni Malkin, Auston Matthews, Patrik Laine, Patrick Kane, and Steven Stamkos probably all find themselves in the top-10. Then you have defencemen like Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson, and goalies like John Gibson and Connor Hellebuyck. Throw in wild cards like the Big Two from Dallas, Mark Scheifele, Jack Eichel, Victor Hedman, Pekka Rinne, and Sergei Bobrovsky, and we could easily see Tarasenko fall outside the top-12 and maybe in the 15-20 range.
I’m just thinking out loud for now but Tarasenko is probably going to be a value next season. He’s shooting 8.45 percent on the power play (by far a career-low, having never been below 15 percent before), 10.75 percent at five-on-five (the second-lowest of his career among 82-game seasons), and has a four-year low in total assists per minute. All this is to say that despite having an established career, there may be some bad luck going on for him and his line mates. We’ll dive deeper over the summer, but I feel confident, in March, planting my flag for Tarasenko as a must-draft in the second round come September.

The Evolution of Jay Cutler's Training
When a 19-year-old Jay Cutler won the heavyweight class at the NPC Teen Nationals in 1993, Branch Warren took home the light-heavies and the overall. Three years later, Jay took his pro card on his first attempt at the 1996 NPC Nationals. He did it by besting a heavyweight class that included Tom Prince (second), Orville Burke (third), Bob Cicherillo (eighth), King Kamali (11th), and Bill Wilmore (13th). Willie Stalling won the light-heavyweight class and overall title that year (Dexter Jackson was sixth in Willie’s class).Bodybuilding glory didn’t come immediately for Cutler: He placed 12th in his pro debut at the 1998 Night of Champions (he would come back to win it in 2000); he was third at the 1999 Ironman Pro, and fourth at that year’s Arnold Classic (he’d win his first ASC in 2002 and take the Ironman title a year later); and in his Olympia debut in 1999, he was 14th (a year later he was eighth). But when he hit his stride, very few could hold their own against this mass monster. What Cutler might have given up to a few other competitors in aesthetics, he more than made up for with sheer mass and a seeming yardstick’s measure of width through his shoulders. Cutler’s physique literally crowded other competitors of the stage.
What a run it was. Consider a few of his many accomplishments on the bodybuilding stage: Jay has beaten two standing Mr. Olympias (Ronnie Coleman in 2007 and Dexter Jackson in 2009); he’s only the third Mr. Olympia to win the Sandow in non-consecutive years (2006–07 and then again in 2009–10); he’s the only man to regain the title the year after losing it; Cutler has won three Arnold Classics and eight other titles; and, arguably, Iron Jay should’ve won the 2001 Mr. Olympia. FLEX sat down to talk to Cutler about the evolution of his training through the years, about what changed, and what has stayed the same.
 UNLIKELY ROLE MODELS
FLEX: How did you get started in bodybuilding?
JAY CUTLER: I joined a gym on my 18th birthday, Aug. 3rd, 1991. My sister’s boyfriend used to collect bodybuilding magazines, and I started to pick up magazines with Chris Dickerson on the cover. These were older magazines that were lying around the house. I already had a muscular physique from working in the family concrete business, so I decided I wanted to take it a little further and try to look like the guys in the magazines.
Chris Dickerson? It wouldn’t seem that the sixth man to hold the Mr. Olympia (1982) title had much in common with the physique you would bring to the stage.
I remember his calves and the muscularity. I was picking up a magazine the year he was the man. It was kind of one of those things where, OK, this is the best guy. He’s winning the shows, so that’s what I wanted to look like. What my physique turned into isn’t necessarily how it started. I was pretty muscular growing up, but I wasn’t a freak. I had pretty decent lines. Eventually I got bigger and bigger and bigger and came to be considered more of a mass bodybuilder than an aesthetic one.
I was 16 years old when I picked up Bob Paris’ book, Beyond Built. That was the first book I’d ever read that I bought from the local GNC. Bob’s book was the one that taught me to do the exercises. In 2004 I wrote a book titled CEO Muscle, and I kind of followed Bob’s book as a guideline as far as how to show the exercises and group the body parts. I still have his book in my collection.

 HIGH VOLUME FROM DAY 1
Were you a volume trainer from your teen years?
I always trained each body part once a week. Chris Aceto and Laura Creavalle took me under their wing and taught me a lot about training and nutrition. I did a lot of sets. Being younger, I could recover much quicker. There was a lot of variation and angles. I worked for the pump versus pushing heavy weight all the time.
What mistakes do you think you made as a teen bodybuilder?
I overtrained, no doubt. I did too much. Chris taught me a lot about the nutrition aspect and wrote me a six-meal-a-day diet that I posted on my refrigerator and followed exactly as the portions and the foods were listed. I think I progressed very quickly from that point because my diet was so intact. So, even though I was probably overtraining, I did pay strict attention to the diet and getting enough nutrition.
 FILLING IN THE BLANKS
Your legs were obviously the body part that developed easiest for you. I remember a picture Steve Neece took of you as a teen in tights outside Gold’s Gym in Venice more than 20 years ago.
Legs, yeah. Of course.
Which body part(s) were toughest to get to grow?
I’d say my chest, because I was so wide and my shoulders were so big. I had to learn to get that arch when you train chest; I have a big rib cage. I had to learn to work the chest muscles instead of just pressing weights because I was very, very strong. I had to learn to contract my chest, so what I’d do is tuck my chin in and let my chest touch my chin with every rep so I could feel it contracting.
My arms were rough to grow. I had small calves compared with my quads. My back held me back against Ronnie Coleman in the early years at the Olympia, so I did a lot to improve that, a lot of T-bar rows and pullups. Really, I just always tried to improve. For a guy who I think wasn’t blessed with the best genetics to be Mr. Olympia, I think I did a good job of filling in the blanks.

 TRAINING VARIETY
Did any exercises change over time? For example, did you give up flat benching for dumbbells?
You know what? I did everything. I varied everything. It’s funny, because I did regular squats, then started squatting with my heels raised on a two-by-four. I switched back and forth between barbells and dumbbells and machines. When I turned pro, I started to use more Hammer Strength machines because those became available, but I always stuck to heavy free weights. As I started getting into the Olympias and battling Ronnie, I began to incorporate T-bar rows and front squats, walking lunges, all stuff I never did in the beginning of my career.
Did any exercise ever just not feel right to you so you avoided doing it?
You know, the squat was always my No. 1 exercise when I was younger. It seemed like as I got older it started to feel like, “whoa, this is a little too heavy.” When I was squatting 700 pounds, it got to a point where it felt like I didn’t need to be squatting 700 pounds. I became a little timid about going over four plates a side, but I didn’t have to go that heavy. I was winning the Olympia, and I never went over 405 pounds; I’d squat that for sets of 12 or 15 reps.
 NEVER AN EGO LIFTER
Were you ever a one-rep-max kind of guy?
Never.
So you avoided ego lifting.
I always tell people I benched 550 twice, and that was the only time I ever did that. I would never try that again. Maybe because I was a great competitive bodybuilder from Day 1, I wasn’t going to risk my physique by pushing weights I didn’t need to. I didn’t think it was necessary.
A lot of guys make the mistake of thinking that intensity is equated with the amount of weight lifted.
They do and it’s bulls—. No one knows what intensity really is. To me, intensity is like having a certain mindset. The mindset that less rest time between sets is better, that the mind-muscle connection is what matters, that if you’re training with a partner you go and then he goes and then you go again. Bodybuilding is about focus and visualization. It’s boom-bang you’re in and out in 45 minutes with a body part and on your way home to eat.
A member of the general public sees you and says, how much can you lift? How do you reply to that?
I say “lots” or I laugh. In the back of my mind, I think, “Here we go again.” Of course, I’m never rude to anyone. I joke now and say sarcastically I train only on the weekends.
You or Phil don’t train like Ronnie, but then again you seem to have avoided the injuries a guy like him had.
Nah, of course I got injured toward the end of my career, but I wasn’t doing anything crazy. Phil didn’t learn from me; he’s a genetic freak who just looks at weights and grows. I trained with heavy weights to get my mass, and I don’t train that way today, which is why I’m not holding as much size. But Phil and I do train in a similar manner because we don’t want to get injured. It’s more important to train for the feel rather than to push the weights.
People would say to me, “How much do you lift?” and I’d always be able to say, “Well, at every gym I’ve trained in I’ve been able to do the heaviest dumbbells in there 10 or 12 times benching them and most of the time shoulder pressing.” When you’re at that point, how heavy do you really need to go? Do you need to start strapping weights on the calf machine? I used to strap plates on the pulldown machine, but sometimes I think about it, and it’s kind of mind-blowing I did that stuff.

 THE 200-POUND DUMBBELLS
I remember a FLEX Chris Lund photo shoot where you were pressing the 200-pound dumbbells.
Chris goaded me on. He was like, “Greg Kovacs did it,” and in my mind I was like, “I can do those.” I’d done them before. I was fresh of the Nationals wins. There were only a few of us—me, Kovacs, Cormier—willing to try to do them.
I looked at the pictures and I was like, “Oh, man, this guy is going to hurt himself just getting them into position.”
Yeah, they were very awkward because they were very long. They used the 10-pound plates back then. Later they got smart and used the 12-pound plates, made ’em a little less elongated.
 HANY RAMBOD AND FST-7
How did you team up with Hany Rambod and what differences did his FST-7 (Fascia Stretch Training) make to your physique?
I’d been friends with him for years. Hany was in the Ronnie Coleman camp, and then when Ronnie lost, we stayed in touch. We got to talking and, after I lost in 2008, everyone was kind of writing me of. People I thought were my supporters let me down. Hany was really the only one to reach out to me in the industry. He sincerely called me a month after the show to check on me, see if I was OK. He didn’t call saying he wanted to work with me. We decided to team up. FST-7 kind of worked with how I was training anyway—the high volume. It gave me something different for my body, helped keep my body fresh and made it rounder and rounder. Which was what my comeback in 2009 was about: the roundness when I dieted down. FST-7 seemed to work very well. I don’t train to that extreme now, but I used it up until the last show I did.
How important is it to have a trainer/nutritionist/guru these days?
For me, remember, I always had one. I had Chris in my corner, then Hany, then Chris again. I found the extra set of eyes always helped. I needed the help with my diet. I always stayed in decent condition, but to get that fine tuning with the amount of calories I had to take in there were a lot of adjustments I needed. If you asked Hany or Chris now who was the hardest guy to peak, they’d probably both still say me because of the amount of food I had to eat to be as big as I was. It was always about trying to find that balance between leaning out and not going flat. I was the guy who if I depleted on 400 grams of carbs a day I would get fat. Most people would dream of eating that much on a high-carb day. My metabolism is crazy. Of course, I had a fluid retention problem being as big as I was. I always stayed at a high body weight. I’d be 290 in great condition and pretty much diet down for the show from there.

 NIGHT OWL TRAINING
You started out in Massachusetts, then California, now Vegas. Did you ever find geography affected your training?
I don’t think so. I had great success in all arenas. I stayed in Vegas because I found a home here, made investments, and the Olympia has been here (since 1999). I can own a beautiful home here and save a lot on income taxes. They also have the best gyms in the world, open 24 hours a day.
What techniques or principles worked best for you?
I did a lot of things: Pilates training, kettlebell training.
You’re known for training late at night.
There were a few reasons I trained late at night. I did it to avoid the crowds. I did it to have that mindset that I’m doing what no one else is doing. And I wanted to know when my body was going to peak at its best. At the Olympia, the pre-judging and night shows are taking place at nine or 10 at night, so I always wanted to make sure I was awake to see what my body was going to look like when I had four or five meals in me. I calibrated my body to look the best at night after I had several meals. I didn’t care about a clock. I didn’t care what day it was. It was always about what I was training and how: two days on, one day off; twice a day; four times a day. I would usually go to the gym four times a day or do two cardio sessions at home and two workouts in the gym. That’s what kept me the biggest and fullest. I ate big, and I trained big. There are no shortcuts, and there are no secrets. It was just good old-fashioned hard work and dedication.
 WORDS OF WISDOM
You must get a lot of young bodybuilders who come up to you for advice. What do you tell them?
I say be patient and be consistent. I tell them that the diet is the major factor because none of them eat enough, none of them eat healthy enough. They read things on the Internet, but the Internet is the best and worst thing that ever happened to our business. They’ll read online that I go and eat at In-N-Out Burger, but it wasn’t like that until I became Mr. Olympia. I needed the calories to maintain the crazy size. These kids just have to take the right road and realize there are no shortcuts. I tell them they’ve got to sleep and train and get the food in. Your body is going to function on the day’s prior nutrition, so you need to pay close attention if you intend to train as hard as you plan to.
 TRAINING NOW
What is your training like today?
I’m training five days a week. I get up and do a cardio session in the morning. I train once a day, a body part or two. I always tell everyone I eat half as much of the food I used to eat and lift half as much of the weights I used to train with. I’ll do fewer sets, maybe 12 to 14 or 15 instead of 20. I did T-bar rows yesterday, but I tend not to do as many T-bars or deadlifts. I am eating five or six meals still, but the portions are very small. I’ll eat five ounces of chicken where I used to eat 10 or 12; I’ll eat 50 grams of rice per meal where I used to eat 100. Same breakfast I’ve always eaten: egg whites and protein, oatmeal. Breakfast has always been my biggest meal. I have a shake after I train with some sugar, carbohydrates. I try to keep it as simple as possible. I’m still maintaining about 265 pounds, but I keep it lean.

Out Of Blixen Riotous Company
Print Room at the Coronet has today announced further details for Out of Blixen and Babette’s Feast, two productions that will run consecutively, putting a spotlight on the fascinating life and writing of Karen Blixen. Although Blixen died 55 years ago, her work remains as relevant and enchanting as ever. A programme of talks and exhibitions will take up residency in the beautiful Victorian venue to accompany the two productions.
Karen Blixen is widely remembered through Meryl Streep’s portrayal in the Oscar winning ‘Out Of Africa’. This spring Print Room at the Coronet will lift the curtain on the many sides to Blixen’s richly layered personal life and career, from the multiple identities she created for herself to the intricate, diverse and enduring stories she told.
Riotous Company’s Out of Blixen will receive its world premiere at the Coronet, previewing from 3 April 2017. This brand new co-production with Print Room at the Coronet is directed by the award-winning Kathryn Hunter, Patron of Riotous Company. Riotous Company Founder, Mia Theil Have, has long had a fascination with Blixen, the complex woman behind the myth, who wrote some of the most daring Danish fiction of the twentieth century, often under pseudonyms, the best known of which is probably Isak Dinesen. Out of Blixen will mark the culmination of a 10 year exploration bringing Riotous Company’s playful and unexpected style to a selection of Blixen’s fantastic stories: The Sailor Boy, Sorrow Acre from Winter’s Tales, The Diver from Anecdotes of Destiny and The Blank Page from Last Tales.
Out Of Blixen is devised and performed by Femi Elufowoju, jr, Kathryn Hunter, Nikola Kodjabashia, Marcello Magni and Mia Theil Have. Dramaturgy and writing is by Paul Tickell, original music and sound design by Nikola Kodjabashia, production design by Luis Carvalho, lighting design by David Plater and aerial advising from Alex Harvey. Riotous Company is supported by PRS For Music Foundation for the original live music score.
Kathryn Hunter said, ‘In a world that seems more and more divided, Blixen’s stories have for us a powerful appeal; in their explorations of the paradoxes of being human they connect us and unleash our imaginations.’
Following Out of Blixen, the creative team from the hugely successful Sweeney Todd in a Pie Shop reunites to present Glyn Maxwell’s specially commissioned adaptation of Blixen’s much loved short story Babette’s Feast. Previewing from 8th May, this world premiere will see Print Room at the Coronet’s typically innovative style applied to Blixen’s tale of one community’s willingness to accept a stranger in need and the ensuing act of thanksgiving.
Babette’s Feast will be directed by Bill Buckhurst with design by Simon Kenny the pairing who collaborated on the hugely successful 2015 Tooting Arts Club production of Sweeney Todd which opens on Broadway next month. New music for Babette’s Feast will be composed by Olly Fox.
Bill Buckhurst said, ‘Karen Blixen’s story is, on the surface, a simple tale of a woman who escapes revolution in her country and arrives in a new community which welcomes her as a refugee with open arms. The original story is only about 50 pages long but each page is crammed full of heart and soul which jumps out at you, written in Blixen’s extraordinary but economic style. Glyn’s adaptation has been done with great sensitivity and affection tackling ideas of tolerance, acceptance and forgiveness. Babette’s Feast is also a story of the transformative power of the creative arts and I’m really excited to be working with this creative team and the Print Room on this, at this moment in time.’
Glyn Maxwell said, ‘These days I’m constantly on the lookout for anything that shows hope and Babette’s Feast really is a tale that goes against the current, showing how good deeds can resonate through the world. I’ve long been an admirer of the Print Room so when Anda Winters first approached me about this I said yes immediately. Since reading the original text I’ve been captivated and I’m thrilled to be bringing it to life surrounded by so much talent’
Riotous Company will conduct a number of critical post-show panel talks on themes including race, storytelling, gender and independent theatre companies in relation to Out Of Blixen, supported by The Danish Embassy, as well as a small exhibition of Blixen’s publications supported by Rungstedlund (Blixen Estate). There will be a captioned matinee performance (22nd April) and a relaxed matinee performance (15th April) of Out Of Blixen and an extensive education programme in collaboration with Central School of Speech and Drama.
