did you know there's a species of frog that's hairy and breaks it's own bones and fights with them as a defence mechanism
I did know! Hairy frog or horror frog or wolverine frog
Did you know there is a species of frog that incubates its eggs in chambers on the mom’s back? (Fair warning don’t google this frog if you’re not good with body horror or you have trypophobia)

Chinese Food in The American West
One of the things I frequently come across as a student of the American West* is that people get most of their information from movies and TV and then act like they know things. Wyatt Earp was not a Lawful Good champion who always did his level best even when it was hard to know. (You want Seth Bullock or Bass Reeves). Racism was far more complicated than white vs not white (I’ve talked about this EXTENSIVELY in Strange Empire, so I’m not going to bore you here**).
And they didn’t just eat steak. In fact, they rarely ate steak.
Steak as cowboy food isn’t INACCURATE, but it is MODERN. From about the early 1900s on, you had less and less drives and more and more ranchers who were staying put, with less and less hands needed, and so food was grabbed less “on the go.” Cows could be slaughtered and used to feed the family, allowing for more opportunities for things like steak, yes, but also things like chili, a play on sauerbraten, southern-style biscuits. The cattle drives were a real blend of culture and race, and a lot of what we have left as “Western food” owes a great deal to that.
And if we leave the cattle drives and head into the towns of the American West, as we will today, we find things like oysters, pies, and various things like that. Far more well-heeled than the general expectation.
I mean, here’s the menu from the Occidental Saloon circa the late 1880s:
Soups
Chicken Giblet and Consumme, with Egg
Fish
Columbia River Salmon, au Beurre Noir
Relieves
Filet a Boeuf, a la Financier
Leg of Lamb, Sauce, Oysters
Cold Meats
Loin of Beef, Loin of Ham, Loin of Pork, Westphalia Ham, Corned Beef, Imported Lunches
Boiled Meats
Leg of Mutton, Ribs of Beef, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Russian River Bacon
Entrees
Pinons a Poulett, aux Champignons
Cream Fricasse of Chicken, Asparagus Points
Lapine Domestique, a la Matire d'Hote
Casserole d'Ritz aux Oeufs, a la Chinoise
Ducks of Mutton, Braze, with Chipoluta Ragout
California Fresh Peach, a la Conde
Roasts
Loin of Beef, Loin of Mutton, Leg of Pork
Apple Sauce, Suckling Pig, with Jelly, Chicken Stuffed Veal
Pastry
Peach, Apple, Plum, and Custard Pies
English Plum Pudding, Hard Sauce, Lemon Flavor
This dinner will be served for 50 cents.
-I got this from the book “Saloons of the Old West” by Erdoes
But none of that is precisely why I’m here, I just can’t stop myself from talking about this, why I’m here is that one of the things I say that often surprises people, is that Chinese food was incredibly common for the, well, common man to eat. There’s very much a conception that we as a non-Chinese American  people did not start eating Chinese food until the 40s and 50s, and its truer that it took longer to catch on in the American East than the West simply as a matter of proximity and choice.
Not MORE choice but LESS. Part of what made the West so unique, historically, is that the lack of choice and the basic scarcity caused people to work with and patronize people that their general prejudices would have kept them from using back east, because they had CHOICES. But out in the west, less so. There were few choices for a quick, cheap meal on the go. That dinner I just posted above is a lavish affair, and a great deal at approximately $20.00 in today’s money. (Which does not allow for the fact that cost of supplies has gone up and this dinner would most likely be offered for no less than 70 or so today.)
People desperately wanted something that was cheap and quick, and the other options in the American West were few, far between, and not intensely pleasing. No one had really come up with the sandwich shop as of yet, and in any case, fresh meats and cheeses would have been too difficult for the low-cost supplier.
ENTER THE CHINESE POPULATION.
If you have read my Strange Empire blogs, I hope you know that Chinese people were a huge presence in the American West, mostly working for the railroad and various mines, but also doing things like laundry, work that was extremely hard but took little in the way of English speaking. They existed in Chinatowns, for a combination of cultural and legal factors, but it’s a misconception that non-Chinese*** people never went to Chinatown.
People are not new, and it was not unusual for non-Chinese people to use the laundries, tailoring, and other services of Chinatowns while suppressing the rights of Chinese people int he same breath. There were always individual Chinese people any given non-Chinese person liked and did business with.
In time, they discovered the inherent wisdom of the noodle bowl.
I don’t mean to suggest that all these early restaurants served was noodle bowls, but that was where it all started. Remember, Italian food had little prominence in America at the this time, as Italian immigration didn’t really get into full swing until the 1870s in America. While there are noodle traditions half of everywhere, and there is nothing new under the sun, what we today would consider a stir-fry bowl was wildly new to most of the non-Chinese folks in the West. That it could be offered up so cheaply, was so filling, and so delicious (more on this later) was a wild revelation. Everyone from simple cowboys (which, fun fact! Was a slur back then!) to mayors were swinging by Chinatowns to try the dishes.
By the 1920s, chop suey, a fully Chinese American invention derived from the words for “various leftovers” was a hugely popular American food among all sorts.
Doc, you may ask, was it just that these folks coming through to get medicines or laundry were SO adventurous? Not at all! Chinese restaurants back then actually, in a very short amount of time, realized that their non-Chinese townsfolk were an excellent way to make money as well, and began to adapt and change dishes to better fit the Western palate, leading what we call American Chinese Food today, which is a legitimate foodway I will defend to my death. Unfortunately, none of these menus survive today--the only ones we have are from places in San Francisco, places that were much more posh, and not the subject of this essay.
There is a scene in Tombstone where Wyatt and his brothers are eating Chinese food, and it’s one of the things people often ask me about, assuming it’s anachronistic. Actually, it isn’t at all--the anachronism is that there’s broccoli in those noodle bowls, which had not yet hit our shores by the time of the OK Corral. Chinese food was a huge hit, Chinese restaurants were doing extremely well, and some Chinese restaurants were even beginning to attempt to print menus in English, with sit down areas, instead of serving simple fare from food carts.
As the food from these “chow chow houses” grew in popularity, as we can infer from the advertisements of their competitors promising free potatoes with every meal, and other such niceties to entice, there was, as ever there must be, blowback. Anti-Chinese sentiment grew to a fever pitch, and with this came overt pressure for ‘Good Americans” to patronize ‘American restaurants’. The social pressure is actually where we get some of that old racist jargon about Chinese people serving dogs and cats, which people often think was spread by competitors to degrade the Chinese restaurants, which isn’t UNTRUE, but was just as often said sheepishly by someone who couldn’t stop themselves from going and grabbing a noodle bowl or even the American dishes they offered, such as roast chicken or pork chop sandwiches.
(I won’t comment with anything but an eyeroll on the bullshit of people saying they’re ~allergic to MSG~ okay I’ll believe you when you stop eating processed food, meat, aged cheese)
It actually kept this type of reputation as being slightly scandalous well into the early 1900s, as being something you ate after the bar, something to be had in the shadows, but it was all for naught, because Chinese food became an important part of American identity. But for all that, no one ever pictures the Lone Ranger chowing down (the American phrase ‘chow’ for food actually comes from these ‘chow chow houses’) on some chop suey, but there’s every reason to believe he would have. American Chinese food is just as American as the Germanically-influenced hamburger.
(There’s a whole subtopic to go down about Jewish and Chinese communities and Kosher Chinese Food, two marginalized and othered communities coming together, but that’s a WHOLE other topic)
(Also someone please buy me Chinese food. This shit always makes me so hungry.)
*The American West is a specific time period, as far as the study of history goes. It covers the period between the end of the Civil War and the New Century, generally, and is, obviously, concerned with the western half of the country. It doesn’t cover stuff like Lewis and Clark (that’s Expansion) or even the Civil War itself, though you cannot possibly hope to study the American West in any level of seriousness without understanding the Civil War. Anyway! I know a lot about America between 1865 and 1900, and am just knowledgeable enough to be dangerous on everything else. Most History nerds are highly specified like this. We’re not as much help to your trivia team as you think.****
**I actually have had little chance to talk about ~European-style xenophobia~ as it played out in the west, because Strange Empire takes a more modern pass at it. But there was a hierarchy of “whiteness” as well, as still largely exists in Europe, land of intentionally clean ethnostates.
***I use the term “non-Chinese” instead of white because believe it or not, non-white people were not magically free of racism against Chinese people. It was horrific and BASICALLY every non-Chinese person was guilty of it to some level, a wild-ass level of hatred that led to Chinese folks not being able to PURCHASE PROPERTY BY LAW in ENTIRE STATES. Being Chinese or Native in this place and time was your Worst Bet.
****I actually was on a competitive trivia team, you DO want me.

backstory :
tam chaewon, aged thirty, had just finished her blacksmith apprenticeship abroad in the netherlands when she decides to go to a bar to celebrate with some friends before trying to find a job when she’s approached by a man claiming to overhear her accomplishment. eager to talk about her future, the two of them end up talking for three hours about it along with the various paths open for her to take. maybe it’s the willingness to sit and listen to her or maybe it’s the legitimacy in his interest that drew her in, but the two ended up spending the night together; they spend only two days together before he leaves with an address for chaewon to write to him if it’s needed. and she does, approximately two months later when she learns she’s pregnant with a baby girl. he writes back nothing but an apology, money to help with the expenses, along with a separate letter to give to the child when she turned ten.
(trigger warning in the paragraph: death specifically during child birth.)         fast forward through a tornado of eight months and chaewon is visiting her parents when charlotte was born prematurely in seoul, south korea in chaewon’s childhood bathroom. there’s a complication with both chaewon and charlotte shortly the birth and the paramedics sped through the streets to pick up the two, doing their best to keep the two of them alive during the ride. the woman’s family races behind them in the family car, barely able to find the room the two are in to see the nurses rush ahead of them. (no one can tell charlotte what the complication is, but her mom stays alive for an gruesome day and a half, straddling the border between life and death. she’s declared dead on december eleventh at 12:18 pm, 1998.) legend has it that silence ran through the waiting room that the family was in, an unearthly wail leaving charlotte’s grandmother as she realizes what she had to pay to receive her granddaughter. no one wants to touch the child, let alone raise her. their family is faced with a choice when they’re handed the death certificate of their daughter, the birth certificate of their granddaughter, and their granddaughter herself.
her uncle is the one that ends up taking her in that day. the oldest sibling to her mother by six years, he had been an entrepreneur bachelor his entire life up until that point. so it’s whiplash, to say the least, to completely upheave his life in seoul and move to the small town of parga, greece to raise charlotte. the transition period between being a bachelor to a single father is hard, but he does his best to not give up on it. along side the lack of support from his family, it makes it all such a draining process. when she turns six, her uncle hires the first person to help the family: a highly recommended local nanny by the name of phoebe who would stay with the tam family until charlotte turned eighteen. it’s around this time that her uncle begins to drift away more, trying to keep his business on track, but he always comes back with an elaborate apology and an equally elaborate gift for charlotte to make up for the digression.
when she turns twelve, she starts to develop ... slightly unusual powers that always came as a shock but were immediately chalked up to scarily accurate guesses. it’s a fun party trick she uses at classroom gatherings, guessing where faults where in desks, trying to figure out what was wrong with technology, etc. and it didn’t go much beyond that for a very long time. it’s a rainy summer day when her uncle sits her down with a strange man who explains to the both of them that she’s a ... demigod. it takes a whole afternoon to convince charlotte of this fact while her uncle looks at her like a monster. she promptly declines any move to go to a camp (much to her uncle’s dismay) and the next six years of her life is promptly laid out. a life lived in a private plane, tucked away from the world to live out of a few suitcases and bought time from others.
this quiet life sealed away from the outside world leaves her doing whatever she can to keep busy. building whatever she can, trying to stay as occupied as much as she can. it results in a suitcase full of little trinkets by the time she’s six months into home schooling. the next few years of her life pass her by in a terrible haze as she does everything she can to catch up to the life that has been set out for her. her life begins to slow down when she gets into college at the age of nineteen, where she finally finds a safe haven amongst people like her. however, at the beginning of 2020, charlotte finds herself catching deep feelings for one EILILDH GALBRAITH. a fiery, vibrant, and resistant spirit immediately draws charlotte into deep feelings for her. the relationship happens for several months before the relationship comes to an abrupt halt in the end of october. unable to come to terms with her first major breakup, charlotte cites a personal, family matter to switch to online classes before coming back to in person at the end of finals shortly before the evacuation.
wanted connections :
DREAMLAND / a v simple plot with room for extreme nuance! someone that charlotte can help bounce ideas off of and vise versa. enable each other’s terrible ideas but do it with much love and a camera on hand at all times. ( 0/2 spots taken )
HIT DIFFERENT / some type of fun flirtatious relationship. maybe they’re just friends, maybe they’re party buddies (for the rare parties that she goes to,) or maybe they just happen to keep meeting. hopefully it’s very relaxed on both ends. ( 0/1 spots taken, must be afab )
ALWAYS GOLDEN / best friends, ride or die type shit. can we get some friend group for it tho because i always love a good group dynamic ( 0/5 spots taken )
I DIDN’T FALL / some kind of missed love, like those missed connections on craiglist. maybe the two of them grew close during charlotte’s time away from university or maybe they almost dated before charlotte was out, either way there’s still some mixed feelings of resentment for not making a move, the deathly “what if’s?”, and mayhaps some feelings that still linger. ( 0/1 spots taken, must be afab )
SPORTS / someone who helped navigate charlotte through her own experience of coming out and how that fits into her cultural identity along and her career field. i have a decent idea of her coming out process but i’m definitely flexible with it ( 0/1 spots taken )

[fic] Boxed Eden (original part)
So I was inspired by @guljerry and egged on by @borg-apologist to post this.
In 2006 I made my first nano attempt and got to 38k words before it became such a mess I quit. So this is the beginning of the first chapter to that original sci fi story and has a fuckton of biblical shit
It's both post apocalyptic and pre apocalyptic in that there's already been a "collapse" but humanity survives. There are those tribes in the oceans with their coveted technologies and the land dwellers above. When Set's lover the inhumanly strong telepath Alexander destroys Genesis and tells him to meet at the rendezvous Set has no choice but to obey, before he destroys them all.
Warnings: the biggest one is crap writing since it's 12 years old but also SERIOUS religious shit (blame my Catholic upbringing >>) and some language as well as homophobia
Alright, here goes nothing:
The sun rose, more red than it once had been, yet at the same time cooler.  The gray atmosphere swirled around the planet allowing a faint pink glimmer to break through in areas. It might have been any time of the day for those without the means to judge. Set looked at his watch covertly as he walked through the center of the town. A few murmured whispers met his ears but he ignored them as he looked for a certain building. He gave a small snort of derision from behind the cloth around his face. He'd always detested these barren primitive outposts full of nothing but horse shit and superstition. At least the larger port city had cars. Professor Galton had always held his ear when describing the lower dregs of society and their inability to comprehend the technology they envied. Galton had never been to any of the great land port cities such as Denver. Set glanced around at the dirty faces. They'd have exterminated the lot of them if they been worth the effort to waste the resources. He carefully kept away not wanting to come within the infection radius. The rampant pestilences; the old throwbacks to the Collapse had all been but eradicated amongst tribes like Set's. Those in the possession of the old technology and books. But amongst these cattle one could never be too careful. The men selected for such trading errands had to be carefully vaccinated upon departure and arrival: and Set hadn't the good fortune to get his shots before the whole thing was blown to hell.
Alex... The name haunted him. It stuck to his tongue when he tried to pronounce it. The young man who promised him heaven and brought him hell with impassioned words and a mouth no less bold. He shuddered as he approached the building. A frown crossed his face behind the cloth. The secretive garb and long cloak marked him as one of the elite; the insignia crest on his chest the sign of Genesis. However, no ungifted pig would realize that he bore the mark of a tribe supposedly eradicated. He could however, tell that people were speculating as to the nature of his physical form. That used to irk him far more when he first began. Genesis was all pure homo superior. No genetics alterations during the old technology golden age as far back as any could trace his or her ancestry. No filthy half animal mongrel would ever make it into Heaven. He'd kill for a clean bed, and dazzling crystals of light instead of some rat trap with death dancing at the ends of waxen cylinders. Still his money was better than any other's. He could buy the whole filthy town in exchange for the small orb on the back of his neck to control his migraines.
With a quick glance to make sure no one was following him, and a slight audio scan, he entered the old building. The door was wood and for a few moments he paused to caress the grainy surface. It wasn't often one encountered such a relic. Even the architects in the land dweller's port cities had enough of the old knowledge to use easy sliding titatnium entryways. He sighed. This had to be one of the most primitive places that he'd ever been to. But at least he could ensure that no one from Apocalypse or Misfits would have his location yet. Fallburg... Landworth.... whatever the hell this backwater dump was called wasn't even a blip on the radar. The door creaked slightly, normal for a wooden door, as he opened it. He found the sound entirely unpleasant. The noise outside of Genesis was the worst. The hodgepodge of primitive sounds, structural imperfections, native beasts. It was like a cacophony of animals. He twisted the disc on his earlobe to dampen the non communicative sound. The low rumble of wind, insects, animals and all the other miscellaneous claptrap ceased. He breathed a sigh of relief as he entered; his boots making no sound on the floor to his own ears.
He'd never been one of those unfortunate to be assigned to missions in the populated inner towns. Scavenging old ruins brought a certain nostalgic peace and sense of awe for all the things even they had yet to rediscover. There was a quiet solitude and a clean sterility even amongst the wreckage. As he stepped inside and the powerful smell of smoke assailed him he almost gagged. Set faltered and had to catch himself on the wall. The texture of the wall was rough and unpleasant and he almost cringed. He'd battled, he'd bled, and he'd been scavenging through ruins but his senses reeled with the smells and the gritty textures. The wall almost felt alive beneath his skin and he felt his palm pulse against the solid surface. His eyes scanned the room and didn't have to look far. Right in front of his stood a middle aged man with some sort of primitive goggles on his face. He hadn't been required to attend any special briefing on land dweller technology. He grimaced and at least said a prayer of thank the man seemed to be fully human. Set took a deep breath and steadied himself as he approached "What is this substance on your walls?" He took satisfaction as the man swallowed nervously. This was a person who knew exactly what an incorrect answer would bring about. Set smiled behind the cloth and walked forward with much more confidence.
"Well?"
"P-paint sir. I assure you it's a very very old technology. It s-simply provides a coloring to the wall." Set nodded and mentally kicked himself for overreacting the way he did. There's nothing of interest here idiot. These people are one step above urinating in the street like primitive dogs. His lip curled as he resurveyed the room. Dull white coloring coated the walls along with some unremarkable pictures. There was wood beneath his feet and he wondered for a moment how these cities survived more than weeks in such storm ridden areas. He wondered briefly as he noted the different shades and manner of wood products if these monkeys didn't simply carve out trees to take residence in. No that wasn't entirely correct, he recalled. The outsides of the buildings clearly indicated some sort of stone masonry. He gave a curt nod looking at the man again. "Yes... definitely nothing of interest here.  I'm looking for someone." No need to further engage conversation for pointless land dweller trivia. Set twitched slightly. He wasn't entirely thrilled to be forced to meet with the man awaiting him but he had no choice. Null was the final survivor of Genesis even if he was no longer considered one of them. "There is a man," Set continued, "That is 192 cm. Approximately 72.7 kg, green eyes shade 112. black hair shade 2, Caucasian skin shade-"
"God of Storms." The soft voice interrupted him. Set turned and felt relief to see a familiar face no matter how unwelcome it would normally be. "Yes. God of ... ah... Null." He cleared his throat uncomfortably. Given a choice of death or exile Null had been the only member of the Genesis tribe since its conception to choose exile. No name no identity and no connections and life amongst the land dweller was a far worse fate than death. "I want to live." With those four words Null had forsaken any hope of redemption and chosen some unbelieving land dweller hell. Set understood the protocol that had been established, however neither he nor anyone else had needed to recall such formalities when addressing an exiled one. What the hell does it matter they're all dead anyway. His stomach felt cold and his heart rate increased a bit. Bringing the reality to the forefront at times caused him a feeling of racing anxiety and he took a breath to quell it. Null simply smiled at him; licked his lips, and turned to the man behind the desk who looked increasingly alarmed. "It's okay Ben... He's with me." The elder man nodded before busying himself with some menial task, Set assumed.  "Come." Null turned and Set took a moment to study the young man from behind as he followed him past the desk and up a narrow wooden stairway. It took some getting used to to maneuver at first but hardly challenging. Once again he longed for something more civilized. To distract himself he noted for future reference that Null, formerly God of Sacrifice, had acquired caucasian skin 58. Then ten shade shift was hardly unexpected however Set along with others of their unit had speculated to far more radical changes.
Land dwelling humans were hardly noted for their physical beauty as far as Set was concerned. Though as Set examined the smooth appearance of Null's skin and the length of his hair it occurred to him that it was possible that physically disfiguring diseases might be on the decrease after so long.  Null's musculature was nearly identical and though he smelled stronger it wasn't entirely unpleasant. Set frowned not liking the direction in which his thoughts seemed to be going. "Ahh good old aberration number five." Null turned and performed his own retinal examination. His eyes glittered with the combination of optic sensors and pigment. "Don't look so stunned Seto I could always smell it on you." he smiled "But of course this is business." He took out a small golden object from his pants and inserted the long end into a hole in the door. Set watched curiously as he turned it and opened the door. As they entered he turned his sound dampener off... just in case.
Set entered after his former teammate and grimaced when he saw still more wood. Wasn't the damn stuff an endangered resource? A large rug was carelessly tossed in the center of the room, a light blue square likely woven with primitive instruments. There was a wooden bed with white sheets that seemed big enough for two which didn't please him. The room, like the rest of the place was still lit with those damn fire sticks mounted to the walls that were splashed with more of that 'paint'. "I suppose I don't need to call you Null... at least... that is..." He really didn't want to say it. Null was perfectly aware of the situation in any case. The young man smiled again; just a small upturn of his lips.  Red 213. Set swallowed. Aberration 5 was normally treated for those willing with an easy injection. The genetic mods had long been lost. Of course they couldn't make him stop finding men attractive any more than they could the color blue, but at least sexual arousal was physically impossible. Set much preferred it that way. It was far less.... complicated.  "Just think of good old baseball, lover." Alex seemed almost beside him whispering in his ear. Set shivered and only then realized that he'd closed his eyes to savor the old memory.
He heard Null laughing and his eyes snapped open and glared. "I trust you won't take advantage of my obvious... problem," he spat out through gritted teeth. He'd always had the impression working with him in the past that Null had always been laughing at some secret joke at his expense.  "Null is fine." He answered Set's earlier statement with amusement. "I find that around here there are far too many 'Jonathan's and far too few 'Null's."  Set walked to the bed and sat down. From what he remembered of the accommodations at comparable places this cloth bag stuffed with some fiver or another passed for "soft". "You never seemed the type to want to stand out." Conversation seemed a way to take his mind off the whirlwind of new and unpleasant experiences the last 2 days had brought him. Null chose to pull a wooden chair from under a desk in the room and sit across from him. "There's a lot you don't know about me Set." He shrugged. "We were teammates, not really friends. But I know you don't particularly enjoy small talk so let's just get to what you want."
Set took a deep breath and shut his eyes to steady himself. Of course Null had to  know what happened. But he had know way of knowing how.... why... Only Set knew that dangerous knowledge. "Alexander... that is.... God of Death..." His voice trembled and his eyes grew somewhat wide. His heart pounded again and he could feel the rush of blood allowing him to hear his own throbbing pulse. He didn't think he could force the words out after all. "I... I need to meet God of Death." He met Null's eyes reluctantly. "In Heaven."
Null sucked in a breath and almost choked. He sat very still and Set wasn't sure if the shock had stalled any of his biological functions. They both sat in silence, Set growing more uncomfortable. He knew there would be lots of unpleasant questions to follow. He almost wanted to laugh. No matter what Null asked him he had no idea how to direct the questions to the answer that would shock him to the very core. Why should he. Why should anyone? "Set?" Oh, he was laughing after all. "Set!" Two hands on his shoulders shook him hard. Trained soldiers didn't laugh hysterically for no reason. Null looked at him worried and it occurred to Set as he calmed himself down how it must look. Genesis was annihilated. One of a handful of survivors was asking for help from someone who didn't technically exist and the rendezvous point was suddenly called into play a hundred years early. And yet...if only it was that small. "Set." The young man looked at him and then looked around nervously. He sounded almost afraid. Null, Jonathan Keller, God of Sacrifice, Unit S Squad leader who had died twenty seven times and been resurrected from blood and ashes, was afraid.
There was no other choice. Null had to know what he was getting into and right about now Set was wishing that he'd been exiled to be a fucking useless land dweller than the savior of the goddamn planet. "Alexander found It." It, being the only thing keeping the planet from dying out completely. It being the sole reason that Earth remained the only habitable planet in the solar system still orbiting the Sun whereas the smaller colonies of the outer moons had already been able to relocate to a G2V that wasn't nearly as old. It being the one thing that every tribe on the planet had absolutely swore never to seek and never to tamper with because the slightest disturbance could prematurely end life before Exodus. And Alexander wanted to blow the fucking thing up.
Null didn't say anything while all these thoughts were once again racing through Set's mind; not for the first and certainly not for the last time since his erstwhile lover had cheerfully told him. He rubbed his temples absently feeling a phantom ache that his regulator wasn't even aware of. Set was hardly surprised by Null's next question. "Tell me Set, what does Alex plan to do with It?" Set had to control his breathing a few times. He felt that giddy madness creeping up again. "The great God of Death version? or the short version?" In spite of the gravity of the information hanging between them Null smiled. "Surprise me."

“Discover How Thousands of People, Just Like You, Have Turned Their Beekeeping Dreams Into Reality!”
From: Nick Winters Beekeeper, Bee Hive Builder
Date: ,
Dear Backyard Beekeeper,
Imagine that you are sitting on your deck enjoying the sun on a summer afternoon. You can see the red and green of your tomato plants in your garden.
You can smell the perfume of your flowers in the flower beds just off the deck. And you can hear the buzzing and humming of the honeybees in your garden beehive.
As you watch, you see your honeybees flying from flower to flower, gathering nectar and pollinating your garden and backyard.
You see them take the nectar back to the hive where they are making honey to share with you and your family.
You see them fanning and dancing at the entrance of their beehive, basking in the sun and enjoying good food from the flowers and plants in your yard and garden.
You take out your hive tool and scrape some propolis from one of the frames, pop it into your mouth and begin chewing. It’s the sweetest gum you have ever tasted. The scent of honey in the air, it’s time to set the burdens of everyday life aside and tend to your bees.
Bees Are Self Sustaining and Only Require A Moderate Investment Of Your Time And Money
Tumblr media
My grandfather was a beekeeper, but unfortunately he passed away before I could learn any of his secrets. Like you, I’ve had to learn from books and experience. Whether your goal is to become a backyard beekeeper or ultimately develop a commercial beekeeping operation, this eBook will give you the foundation of knowledge required to successfully keep you producing honey and growing your hives.
The truth is that producing your own honey is incredibly rewarding – and profitable – if you know what you’re doing! As a hobbyist you will enjoy the two best things about beekeeping; an escape from everyday life doing something you enjoy, and creating a very unique gift you can give to friends and family. Who wouldn’t be impressed by your skills in producing such a wonderfully sweet, nutritious delight? (And yes! Honey is very nutritious!)
“My Garden is Doing Better Than Ever”
Thank You! As an avid gardener I was most interested in using the bees to help my garden and, WOW, what a difference, my vegetable garden is doing better than ever and my flower beds look fantastic! I especially liked the chapter on stings, that onion trick worked great!
Sandra, PA | Lifetime Member
Are you interested in developing more than just a hobby, perhaps something that will earn a little extra pocket change? Sidelining allows you to produce enough honey to sell for a profit, supplementing your income. Commercial beekeepers have large operations, selling bee and beekeeping related products as their primary source of income. (For example, they may focus on raising bee queens and bees to supply other beekeepers.)
Lets start off by addressing the most asked question by the beginner beekeeper. “Will I get stung”. If I had a nickel every time I heard this! The answer is; if you follow the safety guidelines outlined in Beekeeping 101 and wear the proper clothing then you can enjoy this very rewarding hobby without the worry of being stung.
Bee stings and allergic reactions are covered in beekeeping 101, although getting stung is not a normal part of beekeeping it is something that every beekeeper should know about. Here’s a bit of trivia for you: Did you know that some beekeepers get stung on purpose as a treatment for arthritis? It’s true!
Everything A Beginner Beekeeper Needs To Start Producing Honey!
The cost of beekeeping courses and seminars can easily run hundreds of dollars. At the suggested retail price of $39 this would be an exceptional value, but if you order in the next ten minutes, we will make this easy to follow practical guide available to you for only $27. Act now and we’ll also include 3 free bonus reports and ebooks, The Nutritional Benefits of Honey (a $19.00 value), Honey Extraction Methods (a $19.00 value), and The Organic Gardener (a $39.00 value) ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!
That’s a $77 value for only $27!
Everything you need to know to become a successful beekeeper is in these eBooks, let’s break it down and take a look at them one by one.
Beekeeping 101, A Beginner Beekeepers PDF Manual
A comprehensive beginner beekeeping course that covers everything you need to know about starting your own apiary. You will have many questions, this guide was developed to give you the foundation of knowledge that every beekeeper must have to successfully maintain their hives!
This ebook contains:
Beekeeping 101 is a detailed, illustrated training manual that covers the most important aspects of beekeeping such as the most popular type of bee and the ideal size and location for your colony. A list of the equipment needed to launch your beekeeping operation and the approximate cost is extensively covered in Beekeeping 101.
As a beekeeper myself, I have numerous books on the subject and I have found that there are many beekeeping books out there that are difficult to understand and may give only a portion of the information needed to start a successful beekeeping operation. For the aspiring new beekeeper it is essential to have a comprehensive manual that takes you by the hand and walks you through every phase of beekeeping.
Beekeeping 101 discusses the best time to set your hives, when to harvest the honey, various methods used to harvest honey, and how to prepare your bees for the cold winter months….and that is just a short list of what this eBook contains! Are you worried the information covered may not apply to your area? Don’t be! There are separate downloads for the USA as well as a European / Uk version to make sure you are getting the most current information for your area.
Pictures throughout the entire eBook illustrate ideas that make it even easier to understand! The anatomy of a bee and hive construction will no longer be a mystery with the included diagrams. It also includes the most common bee diseases and how to recognize and treat them. As a bonus you will also receive a truly fascinating crash course in hive behavior!
“Thanks For The Wonderful Help”
We were having a problem (we thought) and weren’t sure what to do so we emailed you guy’s. It turned out there wasn’t a problem at all, who knew bees would crowd around the front of a hive like that!

Beanie Feldstein of Booksmart on Being “Built Happy,” Overcoming Tragedy and (of Course) Llamas
We’re on the patio at one of Beanie Feldstein’s favourite brunch spots. It feels transplanted from Los Angeles—which is to say there is a shocking dearth of deep-fried dishes. But the mechanical roar and shudder from a nearby construction crew, the buildings and the presence of Beanie* herself place us very clearly in New York. Chelsea, to be exact. And when in Chelsea with an impossibly charming actress well on her way to attaining her dream career, you talk about llamas.
* Author’s note: It’s journalistic convention to refer to a subject by his/her last name after his/her first appearance, but it feels wrong to do so with Beanie Feldstein. Beanie—a name her late brother gave her when she was a baby named Elizabeth—fits better. It’s like if Coca-Cola were a person, you wouldn’t call her Cola; it’s too broad and generic. No, you’d call her Coke.
“I loved llamas growing up,” says Beanie. “My second screen name ever, my second email, was pinkllamas12. My favourite colour, my favourite animal, my favourite number.”
As far as conversational tangents go, this isn’t that random. Beanie, whom you’ll recognize from playing the so-loyal-it-hurts best friend in Lady Bird along with the so-loyal-it’s-hilarious best friend in this past summer’s instant high school classic Booksmart, was talking about apartments in New York. This led to talk of dogs. Big dogs, specifically, and how, what with a roommate and all, she can’t get one at the moment. Helpfully, I asked if she had considered llamas. “They’re also quite tall.” Ha ha.
And so we spoke of llamas.
As it turns out, we each have one piece of llama trivia. Mine hasn’t exactly been fact-checked, so I’m concerned that my llama anecdote will contradict hers—and wouldn’t that be awkward? Rule number one of celebrity interviews: Don’t argue with the talent (especially about llamas).

“From what I read when I was 11, you have to have at least two llamas,” she says. “Because if a llama doesn’t get attached to another llama, it’s going to get attached to you and then be violent with anyone who comes near you. But if you have two, they’ll get attached to each other.”
My tidbit is that instead of using sheepdogs (or maybe in addition to using sheepdogs…my knowledge of shepherding practices comes almost exclusively from Looney Tunes), shepherds will sometimes put a llama in with their flock. So long as that llama remains singular, it will defend its little woolly cousins against all comers—will literally flatten any coyotes that come sniffing around. But if that llama has a llama friend, it could give a shit about those damn sheep.
The point of both of our anecdotes is the same: Llamas have very powerful feelings. And as such, they provide an imperfect yet apt metaphor for who Beanie is (minus what are clear co-dependency issues on the part of the llama).

“I love deep,” Beanie tells me later. It might be the truest statement anyone has ever made. In the hour we talk, Beanie uses the word “love” approximately 60 times. If she mentions someone—a director or past co-star or anyone—she’ll first list specific reasons why she loves them. And hers isn’t the “Oh, Marty Was Such a Thrill to Work With” kind of talk show praise that celebrities usually dish either. It sounds genuine—like everyone is a friend she met at camp and can’t wait to tell you about.
“It’s very rare for me not to connect with people,” she says. “It’s subconscious: I feel connected or I don’t. Every now and then, I’m wrong. And it hurts. But I think I just sort of know. I just love deeply.”

She just knows herself, too. And I get the sense that, more importantly, she likes herself. That’s a big part of why she can be so positive about pretty much everything. That might sound like she’s a typical millennial, pumped full of untested self-esteem. But it’s not like that. It’s a choice, and it’s one that doesn’t go unchallenged. After all, one assumes that being a plus-size actress in Hollywood comes with certain pressures that can be anathema to self-acceptance.
In a brief essay for Refinery29, she wrote about how precarious and hard-fought self-love can be, at least when it comes to her body. After unintentionally losing weight after a stint on Broadway, she noticed how many comments and compliments she was getting about her looks. “It really messed with my head,” she wrote. “After years of pain, I had finally found such a beautiful peace, one that most people, no matter what size they are, don’t have […]. But here’s the issue: When everyone started telling me I looked smaller, I lost my beautiful mindset that took decades to find.” Her self-acceptance and confidence don’t come from outside; they come from her own self-awareness. She has a healthy understanding of her talents as well as her weaknesses.
“When everyone started telling me I looked smaller, I lost my beautiful mindset that took decades to find.”
Her upcoming film, How to Build a Girl, is based on the novel by Caitlin Moran (“so charismatic and so effervescent and magical”). Beanie plays a girl named Johanna, who is “so different from Caitlin.” The character and Moran do, however, share a pretty similar biography. They are both music critics from the British town of Wolverhampton and speak like it. It’s not an accent that comes naturally to anyone not from Wolverhampton; it’s an accent that even her girlfriend, English film producer Bonnie-Chance Roberts, couldn’t help her with. “It’s not just a British accent,” she says. “Coky [Giedroyc, the director] was like, ‘Even as Londoners, we don’t know how to do that accent.’”
Photography by Arkan Zakharov. Styling by Anna Katsanis. Creative direction by Brittany Eccles. Hair, Peter Butler for TraceyMattingly.com. Makeup, Matin for TraceyMattingly.com/Nars. Manicure, Miss Pop/Zoya Nail Polish. Fashion assistant, Paulina Castro Ogando. Photography assistants, Ian Bishop and Alicia Brooks.
“I’m not an accent savant like some people,” says Beanie. “Saoirse Ronan is brilliant in every way, but her work with accents is so insane. I approached it academically.” She’ll tell you, without self-deprecation or false modesty, that she is neither the most creative nor the most intelligent in her family. But she is the most academic.
“I know the moment I got the part,” she says. “I was Skyping with the producers before I went to London for my audition. And they were like, ‘We looked all around for someone from Wolverhampton to play Johanna.’ But they couldn’t find anyone and so they were looking all over the U.K. I was like, ‘If you’re not casting someone from Wolverhampton, then anyone would be doing an accent.’ And I saw their heads cock, and it was the right thing to say.”
Bold, right? But then she had to work to nail Moran’s accent—which took a three-week immersion in Wolverhampton-ese while embedded in one of the town’s female-run shops. She said it was awkward at first, since she was under orders to speak in the accent well before she had it down, but what’s a little discomfort if it means getting to work with someone like Moran?
Photography by Arkan Zakharov. Styling by Anna Katsanis. Creative direction by Brittany Eccles. Hair, Peter Butler for TraceyMattingly.com. Makeup, Matin for TraceyMattingly.com/Nars. Manicure, Miss Pop/Zoya Nail Polish. Fashion assistant, Paulina Castro Ogando. Photography assistants, Ian Bishop and Alicia Brooks.
“She is everything I would want to be as a woman,” she says. “I just couldn’t believe that they chose a Jewish girl from Los Angeles. And I think in my core they saw something in me that Johanna has, which is like an eternal optimism.”
And like with her character, it’s an optimism that has been tested. As a good sociology grad (Weslyan ’15), she knows that her life has been privileged: raised in Los Angeles by well-off, creative parents; a famous older brother (named Jonah Hill); loads of natural talent and charisma. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had challenges or faced grief.
Her oldest brother, Jordan, was a manager for Maroon 5, Robin Thicke and Elle King. He died at the end of 2017 from a blood clot in his lung. “It’s unbearable at times,” she says. “But it doesn’t linger in me. I mean, my tragedy lingers in me every day. My grief is something that I am alongside every single day. But it doesn’t present itself as depression or sadness.”
“It’s unbearable at times. But it doesn’t linger in me. I mean, my tragedy lingers in me every day. My grief is something that I am alongside every single day.”
There’s a difference between eternally optimistic and blindly optimistic. She knows that life is hard and things are shitty. And it’s hard to keep a big heart from getting hurt every now and then, but all the pain isn’t pointless. “I found myself unwillingly in a new club,” she wrote in an essay for InStyle. “It is a club full of suffering and questioning but is also a community of people who have a truly broadened perspective on the human experience.”
And while it doesn’t make up for the loss, that kind of perspective is helpful when your job is to inhabit different human experiences. “I think one of the most beautiful lines I got to say in Lady Bird was ‘Some people just aren’t built happy,’” she says. “I was really struck, because I have no words for how much I miss my brother, but I think that I am just built happy.”
Photography by Arkan Zakharov. Styling by Anna Katsanis. Creative direction by Brittany Eccles. Hair, Peter Butler for TraceyMattingly.com. Makeup, Matin for TraceyMattingly.com/Nars. After reading all this, you shouldn’t be surprised that Beanie is a theatre person. She fell in love with Funny Girl before she was old enough for kindergarten. She spent most of 2017 on Broadway starring in Hello, Dolly! with Bette Midler. (Bet you can’t guess how Beanie feels about her.) Theatre—musical theatre, specifically—might be the only thing she loves more than…all of the other things she loves.
“I think one of the most beautiful lines I got to say in Lady Bird was ‘Some people just aren’t built happy.’ I was really struck, because I have no words for how much I miss my brother, but I think that I am just built happy.”
Considering how many theatre nerds there are around the world, there are relatively few true theatre people in Hollywood, but you know them when you see them: enthusiastic, touchingly game, often improbably good at accents (spoiler alert: Beanie can talk like a native of Wolverhampton now) and probably on the verge of tears (happy or sad) at this very moment. “They are people with the biggest hearts,” she explains. “I’ve never met a more hard-working people than the theatre community. Broadway is a slow burn of commitment.”
Maybe the size of their hearts helps with the required energy as well as her craft. She’s not a method actor. She connects to her characters through empathy, through inherent understanding and love.
Photography by Arkan Zakharov. Styling by Anna Katsanis. Creative direction by Brittany Eccles. Hair, Peter Butler for TraceyMattingly.com. Makeup, Matin for TraceyMattingly.com/Nars. Manicure, Miss Pop/Zoya Nail Polish. Fashion assistant, Paulina Castro Ogando. Photography assistants, Ian Bishop and Alicia Brooks.
One final observation: Beanie’s first breakout role was in Neighbors 2. She played a freshman student who started a wildcat sorority with Chloë Grace Moretz. In her next two major roles, she was a senior in high school. “And, now, in How to Build a Girl I’m 16,” she says. “I’m Benjamin Buttoning, which is funny because I’ve always felt like an old soul.”
Beanie passes as a teenager, of course, especially since we’re used to seeing 25-year-old high-schoolers in pop culture. But I think she keeps getting younger and younger in her roles as a corrective. Even though she’s only in her early twenties, we regret that we didn’t find her sooner, that we weren’t friends with her in high school. So, we’re going to force her back there. We want her in our musicals, films and lives for as long as possible.
Actually, maybe we’re the llamas in this metaphor.

Are you interested in developing more than just a hobby, perhaps something that will earn a little extra pocket change? Sidelining allows you to produce enough honey to sell for a profit, supplementing your income. Commercial beekeepers have large operations, selling bee and beekeeping related products as their primary source of income.     “Discover How Thousands of People, Just Like You, Have Turned Their Beekeeping Dreams Into Reality!”
From: Nick Winters Beekeeper, Bee Hive Builder
