Kulu - I had high hopes for him but he's not getting any better is he? Failed to take on his man successfully for months now and has hardly any goals or assists lately

Emerson - no explanation needed lol

Gil - Again I tried to give him time but he's just a bit useless

Forster - Terrible back up keeper if you ask me. Never should have signed him in the first place. Need a much more reliable back up

Davies - Look he's been quite a reliable backup at times but his time with us is probably done now

Bisssouma - Another disappointing prospect. He had a good start to the season tbf but it doesn't look like he's going to find his form again. And tbh even when he was good he was easily the worst player in the starting lineup for me

Richy - It’s actually kind hard to put him in this list. I used to hate him but I've grown fond of him this season. Still doesn't excuse the fact he's not good enough and he's injured way too often. We need a proper number 9 going forwards

Hojbjerg - He's just way too inconsistent and at times a bit of a liability. It would be better for everyone if he just moves on now

Solomon - I just don’t see the point of having him anymore tbh lol. We got him on a free so let's just get some money for him now

Sess - Another player constantly injured and when he does play he's almost as bad as Emerson. Just another pointless prospect

Ndombele - Should have got rid of him a long time ago. He's one of the laziest players I've ever seen before. Just need to get him gone asap

Reggy - Ange clearly doesn't want him and neither do I. He's had his chances and been piss poor for the most part

And finally I'm on the fence about these two but... werner hasn't convinced me it's worth making him permanent so I wouldn't care if we let him go. Also gio... Ange clearly doesn't want to play him much so perhaps he's better off elsewhere too

Azula is fairly (way more than people give her credit for) empathetic toward people in her "in-group" and not very empathetic to her military and political enemies. Zuko is sometimes quite empathetic toward his "enemies" and strangers but does not tend to be empathetic to his "in-group," whether it be the Dangerous Ladies or the Gaang.

Huh. Just had someone comment on ch9 that the "sudden" Crayne kidnapping plot felt over the top / like drama for drama's sake. I'd always thought that Crayne having his own agenda was fairly heavily foreshadowed, but maybe it's just because I'm the author and know what I'm planning.

Given how much the warlock/Volantis plot dominates Resonant, I advised them that if they weren't enjoying the plot after the next few chapters, the story probably isn't their cup of tea...

Now I'm curious: at the time you read ch1-8, what did you think Crayne was planning, if anything? Did you assume he was just being shady on behalf of his Green patron(s)? Did you think he was in cahoots with Allard? (ALLLLAAAARD!) I don't expect that anyone's first suspicion was "secretly working for a third party to kidnap the twins for an absurd payout," but maybe a few of you read him perfectly!

Did it feel like a big turning point in the story? I imagine for some people it felt like I'd spent the first eight chapters setting up for Blacks vs Greens intrigue, and suddenly there was a huge third party threat. I could see how a few people might feel a little disappointed not to have gotten the former.

Since this is turning into a mini dvd commentary, here were my authorial bits of foreshadowing:

Crayne being way more social than appropriate with the boys during their hunt with Rhea. A "normal" agent wouldn't need to get buddy-buddy with them. His job is to keep Otto informed about any notable developments. So gaining their trust was entirely Crayne's motivation, in the hopes of an easier kidnapping. (I also think he was curious about why someone would offer such exorbitant coin for two children.)

Crayne being a relative newcomer at the Gates of the Moon. He has far fewer ties to the place, no connection to Allard or the boys. Is Marten Crayne even his real name? Was there another Marten Crayne whose identity he assumed?

Crayne deciding to kill a knight and his squire just to keep the boys at the Gates of the Moon. Otto would have rather cut his losses, and had almost certainly instructed Crayne to play things safe. (I've said it before, but Otto truly does seem like the type to "play by the rules." There's no evidence that he ever stooped to the level of trying to have his political enemies killed. Instead, he prefers to outscheme them. Sneakily arranging to foster Daemon Targaryen's hidden bastards? Well within the rules! Arranging to have them murdered if those plans fell through? Beyond the pale, despite Jon suspecting otherwise.)

Crayne in general being so comfortable with wetwork / hiding bodies. That's a level of uncouth that I doubt Otto thought he was dealing with.

This isn't foreshadowing, but let's have a moment of appreciation for Crayne's canniness in using his position as "Otto's agent" to assert authority over Allard in times he would otherwise have been questioned.

The brief conversation the boys have with Crayne on their outing where he's their guard.

“You needn’t be so wary,” Crayne said later, as they turned back toward the Gates of the Moon. “My charge is to keep you safe, and I intend to do so.” “Because it benefits you,” Raymar said, the first he’d spoken. “Because you want something.” Crayne’s expression flickered before smoothing into a smile. “Who doesn’t?” That brief flash of something bothered Jon all the way back to the castle. Crayne had murdered a highborn knight without hesitation. He could have demanded the boys be returned to his care instead; Jon doubted Ser Thoren would have risked harm to them by refusing. Word could have been sent to the Greens to deal with the problem as they wished. Instead, Crayne had taken a great risk. Why?

Their conversation at the end of Manchester Part II. CJ goes into that conversation planning on telling him she's going to resign, but then... "I need you too." (says it all, doesn't it?)

CJ being the one to finally call him out in Disaster Relief in season 5 is kind of everything to me. "I need you back. I need you to lead." That is her President and she needs him to lead! And that's the wake-up call he needs!

I mentioned this in my top CJ moments, but CJ and Jed at the end of Galileo, and "it's about going to the blackboard and raising your hand" and "you said it right that time." GOD.

I'm asking you to jump off a cliff. (the best and hardest question ever asked of CJ... until her wannabe boyfriend asks it about a year and a half later. lol)

I can’t get enough of where sevent’s ideas take me. This pairing sounds wild on the surface and it is but I am so fucking compelled by the dynamic, esp when it’s been an accidental bonding.

And once he realized that, their meetings turned into the pretence of a tentative political alliance to cover up the carnal truth of what really happens when Eredin deigns to visit. It originates from the woman who chortles when she sits at the table. Her laugh stokes the rage in his disembodied soul.

Philippa tortures Radovid’s soul. Radovid POV. I couldn’t help but play around with the darkfic idea for Phil getting some revenge.

Dijkstra

My favorite tag from the author: dijkstra is an adult he can enter into a sus contract with a sort of demon man if he wants to. This is like the most galaxy brained rare pair idea and can’t stop thinking about it when I consider rare pairs that changed my brain.

Maybe he'd recover, maybe he'd burn his life down around him, because the chaos of such upheaval was worse than the certainty of reprisals, of consequences. It was the kind of thing a skilled spymaster knew how to counteract proactively. For a less valuable player he had less personal means of redress, but for Geralt… Geralt required a personal touch.

forever fascinated by the lengths kyon will go to for haruhi, complaining the whole time, while never actually considering seriously that he does not need to be doing all that shit.

like. that's the thing i find interesting, contrasted to his dedication to his own morals (the line he won't cross, even for her). even when contrasted to his actions in surprise, because that comes from a place of desperation.

but this is just his day-to-day. he runs around doing whatever she tells him to, because she tells him to. the complaining does not invalidate the fact that no one is actually forcing him.

there's a lot of directions that you could take this observation in particular.

there's the aspect of why, exactly, does he do that? though that's honestly difficult to get a clear grasp on; especially knowing that he's not even allowing himself to have thoughts that he recognizes as vaguely romantic toward her. but he's pretty good at the cognitive dissonance, at least from where i'm standing.

there's the aspect of how this looks to literally everyone else, which i think--taken in tandem with their close relationship and the fact that neither of them is willing to acknowledge or discuss it openly--informs the perspective of the people in their immediate vicinity, ie. their classmates and teachers (a perspective that doesn't come up much, but is always interesting to me).

(i'm just saying, i think there's a second reason no one has asked out haruhi, beyond hearing rumors about her in middle school. like, we know that people overall still find her interesting and attractive! but the fact that she's so close to kyon, who is relatively average but is also the only person she seems genuinely interested in, probably discourages the people who'd otherwise go for it)

there's the aspect of the role that he fills in relation to haruhi, also, which varies a bit more than it does for the others. mikuru is, most often, a dress-up doll; yuki is sometimes, and she's also something to protect; koizumi is a yes-man and the guy with the solution to all her problems. kyon, however, is several things that don't necessarily always fit together: devoted follower (not that he'll admit it), the one person willing to openly oppose her (and the one person she will actively listen to in such a situation), a protector of some sort (knight/bodyguard kinda vibes, especially with That Scene in surprise and how that is when the fairy tale stuff gets brought up again; though it's an occasional recurring motif/theme throughout the series)

"it's slop" is cope. most "art" that's produced today is already slop. that's just how it goes. the vast majority of any medium is slop. that's what makes it slop. but just because most of it is slop doesn't mean that there aren't a few greats that rise to the top. why would ai art be any different?

you don't have to spend years grinding. makes art much more accessible. in the case of ai film especially, it subverts old, sclerotic liberal bourgeois order of art driven by capital and conformity. you know who controls hollywood. why do you trust them to be tastemakers?

the idea that art is only made meaningful through suffering is cringe commie theory of value/priest fetish shit.

people who have suffered will obviously feel bitter about people being able to reach their position (or beyond) without also having to suffer. old guard is just sad because they trained 20 years to become a cog in a machine that no longer exists. don't be one of those slavish losers.

no one dreams about being a pipeline animator. everyone dreams of being a studio director. ai enables that. also kills art-by-committee. empowers the individual will. the artist. the godhead. art as will-to-power again, you no longer need to "collaborate" with others or seek the approval of a committee of executives who just say "make it more like frozen" in order to see your horrifying vision realized. you can just do it. everyone is a one-man studio or a one-man film crew or one-man orchestra. auteur theory on steroids. every man a mythmaker.

it doesn't destroy the need for skill anyway. it just transform the skill set and establishes new standards for excellence. you still have to be good to stand out. why wouldn't that be the case? you just don’t have to be good at drawing fingers anymore. now you have to be good at composing, refining, worldbuilding, directing, etc. people always whine when the domain of mastery shifts. photography was "not real art." digital was "not real painting." cg was "not real animation." but all that means is: you’re no longer elite. you're just old and slow.

art is not even about technical skill anyway though. it's more about vision, taste, style, etc. curation. narrative instinct. symbolic force. conceptual clarity. the human part of art. that's what matters. people might be impressed by the dude who can draw hyperrealistic eyes for a few minutes but it doesn't leave a lasting impression. people want meaning and inspiration. artists are not technicians or engineers. they are visionaries and dreamers and seers. vision > technique.
