got tagged by @aqueerwindinthewillows to do a first lines challenge - first ten lines of ten fics. Gonna cut it down to first paragraph or two because I think that's generally a little more representative with me :3 Picking out some personal fav fics to share!
Anyone's welcome to pick this up from me <3
After School Special - a snapshot of Trapper's childhood
The first time John watched a man die, he was eight years old.
Return to Sender - post-canon traphawk longfic
When Trapper got his travel orders, they came handed over from Frank in a sleek, white envelope addressed to Captain J. F. X. McIntyre, United States Armed Forces. The first thing he thought was that he couldn’t wait to tell Hawkeye.
Babydoll - Trapper (traphawk) lingerie kink indulgence
Trapper would always readily admit that seeing a gal in nothing but her underwear was more exciting than just seeing her naked. There was intention behind it, that way. You could read exactly what they were expecting just from how they were dressed. Sometimes their bra and panties didn’t match because they hadn’t expected to get swept off their feet. Sometimes they did, and that was how he knew he’d been the one getting played all night and he could expect a little something special. Sometimes he came back to a gal’s house and she left him alone in her bedroom while he stripped out of his jacket and waistcoat, leaving his suspenders on so she had something to snap, and she’d come back in a matching set of something with one of those sheer things over it that made her look like an angel.
Guys and Dolls - beejtraphawk sequel to Babydoll
In the few weeks since Hawkeye had stumbled across Trapper lazing around in his lingerie, Trap hadn’t been able to shake the aching feeling in his gut that his partners were going to turn on him. He had no idea why. It sure as hell wasn’t Hawkeye’s fault. Hawk was kind, and excited, and apart from a few initial apprehensions, he’d been a perfect gentleman about a situation that would have surprised anyone. There’d been no insinuations that Trapper was anything less than a man. No odd looks, only hunger when they ended up in the walk-in closet at the same time and Hawkeye’s gaze landed on the plain, ribbon-wrapped box behind the shoe rack. Not even any whispers with BJ, as far as Trapper knew; perfect secrecy. Which left BJ Hunnicutt as the potential source of the problem.
Strokework of a Rembrandt - houlintyre ibm commercial au smut
The office had started emptying out earlier ever since the new IBM computers came in. Sure, there was a bit of a learning curve, but they made everything so much easier. No more staying late. No more finicky command line prompts; everything worked like a dream with the graphical interface. Everyone clearing out at five on the dot made Trapper’s life significantly easier. Not only was work a breeze, but he and Margaret didn’t have to make do in one of the supply closets with the main floor clear by 5:05.
Desperate Times - hentrap
The problem with Hawkeye getting a three-day pass to Tokyo without Trapper, aside from the fact that Trapper was blindingly jealous Hawk got to get out of the mud and into a proper shower without him, was that he took all the fun with him. It was like the days before he showed up all over again. And it was more like four and a half days instead of three, with all the travel time added up. Just Trapper, all alone in the Swamp. With Frank.
Tension - Stagecoach West, Luke/Simon
Luke wasn’t a stranger to hard work, but putting up a house was a harder task than he’d expected, even with a couple of hired hands and Davey’s enthusiastic participation. He liked the kid. Had as good a head on his shoulders as his father, and Luke was getting to know his father’s head better every day. Mr. Murchison was happy to put Davey up in a room at the inn for free, but that courtesy hadn’t been extended to Luke or Simon. Meant they were sleeping in a tent on the land they’d bought together, or sometimes under the stars if the wind wasn’t too harsh. Trouble was, they only had the one tent. And for all that Luke could put on a show about appreciating women when the time came to press it, sleeping only a few feet away from a man who was kind and good with the bluest eyes he’d ever seen wasn’t doing him any favors in the lack of privacy situation.
Gallantry in Action - traphawk, Army-Navy Game but they get sex pollened
It was all the stupid Army’s fault. Really, it was. It had all started with a football game, a CIA bomb, and Henry Blake being either too concussed or too much of an idiot to properly read instructions.
Fourth Walls are for Climbing - hawkeye/alan alda universe swap
“You’re taking too many of those flights,” Charles says like they’ve had this argument before and not like it’s the first thing Hawkeye’s heard from him since he and BJ threw his shoes into the minefield last night. Hawk blinks the sleep out of his eyes. It’s early evening, he thinks. Wasn’t he supposed to have a post-op shift in the morning? “I’d hardly call two glasses of swamp juice a flight,” he argues. The shuffling noises of Charles wandering around stop. “Everything alright, Alan?”
Whatever Happened in Aberdeen? - from wayyyyyyy back in my Doctor Who days, Sarah Jane gets picked up by the twelfth doctor when four drops her off
Aberdeen. The ridiculous man spent at least half his time in England and yet he couldn't even hit the country when it mattered. Sarah thanked the operator for that particular piece of information and gave her the number of UNIT's Doctor-related emergencies line.

Facts about hippos:
1.- . Hippos are most active at night.
These animals are not considered nocturnal; most hippos' foraging and activity happen at night.
2.- They produce their sunblock
Hippos have adapted the ability to produce a red, oily liquid that acts as a natural sunblock.
3.- Hippos can identify friends from enemies
Fascinatingly, hippos can identify a friend from a foe by smelling their poop. This will tell them if what is around the area could be considered a friend or threat.
4.- Hippos are the third largest land mammals on Earth after elephants and white rhinos.
5.- . Hippos are a threatened animal.
Human activity is the primary cause of why these animals are considered "threatened."

Attendance Prompt:
"One observer wrote that in the year 1587 alone, around 144,000 pounds or 72 tons of cochineal were shipped from Lima to Spain . (This is roughly 10,080,000,000 insects.)" - page #142
Being from Lima - Peru, I had no idea that my country's economy depended so much on this famous insect many years ago. Even the death of one of our Inca leaders is linked to this insect that created so much conflict in the past. It is ironic to think that the Spanish conquered Peru not only for its wealth in minerals but also for the abundant existence of this insect.

Quantum USC & IBM Certified For Modified Simon’s Problem
Tumblr media
USC researchers demonstrate exponential quantum speedup, enabling quantum advantage.
USC researchers led by Dr. Daniel Lidar used IBM quantum computers to verify an exponential algorithmic speedup for a modified Simon's problem in a groundbreaking study. This Physical Review X study is one of the first to show quantum scaling speedup without using untested notions about classical method constraints. By executing circuits on noisy quantum hardware like two 127-qubit IBM Quantum Eagle processors (ibm_brisbane and ibm_sherbrooke), the team showed that quantum speedup scaled exponentially with issue size.
A Quantum Computing “Holy Grail” Found
The exponential scaling speedup proof marked a turning point in quantum computing. Dr. Daniel Lidar considers this the “holy grail of quantum computing” since an exponential scaling speedup shows “As variables increase issue size, the quantum-classical performance gap grows, to the advantage of the quantum side.” Quantum devices had only showed polynomial speedup till now. This study proves current quantum computers can gain quantum advantage without conjecture.
A quantum guessing game for Simon's Problem
The study examined a “oracle-based game,” a modified version of Simon’s problem. In this game, players must anticipate a hidden bitstring (b) known only to an oracle (a black box) with the fewest queries possible. Lidar's team limited the bitstring's Hamming weight—its number of “1s”—to reduce circuit complexity.
How modified Simon's problem works:
A secret bitstring b with a fixed Hamming weight w is chosen. A mystery function f is specified to equal f(y) only if x = y or x = y + b. All outputs share exactly two inputs, offset by the hidden bitstring b. Players request f(x) from the oracle. Although classical computers query sequentially, quantum computers can query in superposition, allowing complex linear combinations of states until measured. Based on bit count, classical computers find this hidden bitstring “exponentially hard” to find. Daniel Simon showed in 1994 that a flawless, noiseless quantum computer could solve this problem in a few queries, giving it an exponential advantage over traditional methods. Simon's problem is a "stepping-stone to Shor's period-finding problem," which is not oracle-based and has profound implications, although having no known real-world applicability. Both topics are abelian hidden subgroup problems.
Recovering Near-Term Quantum Computer Performance Lidar's team developed many key approaches to realise exponential speedup with today's "pre-fault-tolerant quantum hardware," including:
Circuit Optimisation: To reduce noise, researchers reduced quantum logic processes to reduce circuit depth. They largely used Qiskit's ability to shallowen Simon's issue circuit. Dynamical Decoupling: Essential for noise suppression. To reverse dephasing noise caused by idle qubits interacting with the environment or other qubits (crosstalk), microwave pulse sequences are added. Dynamic decoupling enhanced quantum results, bringing the scaling curve closer to noiseless. Error Mitigation: After dynamical decoupling, they used methods to find and fix measurement mistakes. The researchers proved that a quantum player may win exponentially faster than a classical one.
Noticed Speedup and Implications
Researchers used Number of Oracle Queries to Solution to measure speedup. A traditional player typically requires Ω(nw/2) enquiries, indicating exponential scaling. Ideal quantum players only need O(w logn) queries. The oracle model exhibited a quantum speedup, and the quantum processor had a shallower slope that matched the ideal result, showing exponential increase over classical scaling.
Problem sizes accelerated to 58 qubits for Hamming weights up to w = 7. Modern quantum computers' increased circuit depth and intrinsic noise made the quantum method less effective for Hamming weights of w = 8 and w = 9. According to the study, “today’s quantum computers firmly lie on the side of quantum advantage, without any conjectures,” giving other practical outcomes “more solid footing.”
This paper emphasises the importance of algorithm development in delivering near-term quantum technology benefits, motivating the quantum community to undertake more experiments and expedite quantum advantage.

Why the Smartphone Has Become an Essential Part of Our Daily Lives
Introduction:
In today’s fast-paced digital world, the smartphone has become more than just a communication device — it’s a daily essential. From waking us up in the morning to helping us stay connected, entertained, and productive, smartphones have transformed the way we live. This article explores how smartphones evolved and why they remain crucial in our personal and professional lives.
Tumblr media
What is a Smartphone?
A smartphone is a mobile device that combines cellular connectivity with computing functions. Unlike traditional mobile phones, smartphones offer features such as internet access, touchscreen interfaces, GPS navigation, high-quality cameras, and access to thousands of applications through platforms like the App Store and Google Play.
The first commercially successful smartphone, IBM’s Simon, was released in 1994. Since then, brands like Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Google have revolutionized the industry by continuously enhancing smartphone capabilities.
Smartphones and Communication
One of the core reasons people rely on smartphones is communication. Whether it’s through voice calls, video calls, instant messaging, or emails, smartphones keep us connected anytime and anywhere. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp further enhance this connection, making smartphones a key part of our social lives.
The Role of Smartphones in Work and Productivity
In the modern workplace, a smartphone is more than a gadget — it’s a productivity tool. With features like calendar syncing, email access, note-taking apps, and cloud storage, professionals can manage their tasks on the go. Mobile office apps like Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and Zoom allow people to attend meetings, edit documents, and collaborate from anywhere in the world.
Freelancers, entrepreneurs, and remote workers particularly benefit from smartphones, as they provide a flexible workspace in the palm of the hand.
Entertainment on the Go
Smartphones also serve as compact entertainment hubs. Whether it’s streaming movies, playing games, listening to music, or browsing social media, these devices offer unlimited entertainment options. Popular platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, and TikTok have optimized their apps for smartphone users, offering personalized content and seamless streaming experiences.
With high-resolution displays and powerful processors, today’s smartphones can easily compete with laptops and tablets in terms of media consumption.
Smartphones in Education and Learning
The educational sector has also embraced the smartphone as a valuable tool. Students use smartphones for online classes, accessing digital textbooks, language learning apps, and educational videos. Platforms like Khan Academy, Coursera, and Duolingo are widely used on smartphones to enhance learning beyond traditional classrooms.
During the pandemic, smartphones became critical in continuing education as many schools switched to online learning models.
The Downside of Smartphone Overuse
While the smartphone brings many benefits, overuse can lead to negative effects such as reduced attention span, sleep disruption, and screen addiction. It’s essential to use smartphones mindfully — setting screen time limits, taking breaks, and ensuring a healthy balance between online and offline life.
The Future of Smartphones
Smartphones are constantly evolving. The introduction of foldable phones, 5G technology, and AI-powered features are shaping the future of mobile technology. As smartphones become smarter and more integrated into our lives, we can expect even more seamless interaction between humans and machines.

Is this 12 months the start of the top of smartphones?
Is this 12 months the start of the top of smartphones? Last month, a curious partnership within the Valley made me marvel on the way forward for sensible gadgets and the way in which we entry our digital universe. In a somewhat whimsical weblog publish, OpenAI introduced the acquisition of Jony Ive’s studio startup io for $6.5 billion. “We have the chance to utterly reimagine what it means to make use of a pc,” stated Altman, including that regardless of unprecedented functionality and new applied sciences like AI, the digital expertise is being formed by conventional merchandise and interfaces. A brand new know-how like AI, he defined, requires an entire rethink of instruments via which we work together with the digital universe. The first smartphone got here into being within the early 1993, when IBM’s Simon added electronic mail and fax to a cellphone’s functionality. (Representative photograph) This acquisition would’ve turn out to be one more company announcement, aside from the timing of it. In the final couple of years, there’s a sense throughout Silicon Valley that smartphone as a tool to work together with the digital world isn't sufficient. New applied sciences like AR/VR, robotics and now AI want new merchandise to discover them with. The new technology is approaching the digital world as an extension of themselves, via speech and never swiping or typing. As know-how turns into extra intuitive, we'd like new gadgets to replicate this alteration – extra immersive and aural, gadgets that increase the true world and never take you away from it. Tech corporations are placing their heads collectively to develop gadgets which might be extra immersive or strategy digital via different senses like aural and even neural. Legacy corporations like Meta, Apple and Google and startups like Neuralink are experimenting with sensible glasses, wearables, iOT gadgets, smartwatches, neural computer systems and even spatial computer systems (like Imaginative and prescientPro) the place digital media is built-in with our real-life expertise. So far, none of those gadgets have labored, however it does really feel like we’re at a cusp of dramatic change. A senior vp in Apple even acknowledged that in 10 years, iPhones might go the way in which of iPods - turn out to be irrelevant and retro. It’s time for this alteration, I might say. After all, our means of interacting with digital areas – via laptops, desktops and sensible gadgets - has been the identical for greater than 30 years now. The first smartphone got here into being within the early 1993, when IBM’s Simon added electronic mail and fax to a cellphone’s functionality. In Nineteen Nineties that there was a relentless feeling of experimentation as the hand held telephones and PDAs that would entry the web had been being performed with via product design. Companies internationally from USA to Japan wished to combine entry to web with a cellphone. The mid 2000s introduced smartphones like Blackberry with QWERTY keyboards, which shortly made tapping and emailing the accomplished factor to do. This modified dramatically when finger-operative touchscreen know-how got here out into the market. Within a few years in 2006, LG had used it to launch a touchscreen smartphone. And then Apple made it the brand new regular when it launched iPhones in 2007. Also Read: Do gaming smartphones actually make sense in 2025? Though there have been wonderful advances within the smartphone together with digicam capabilities, chip design and biometrics, the system design itself hasn’t modified the way in which we work together with the digital world. There’s a display screen we swipe, contact and pinch. We try social media, add our photographs on cloud and chat and electronic mail on the go. This staleness within the design was clear in Apple’s just lately concluded annual developer convention, WWDC 2025. The new iPhone 17 will probably be kind of the identical as iPhone 16 with a number of tiny tweaks. Jony Ive, whose firm OpenAI acquired

The First 1GB Hard Drive**: The first 1GB hard drive was introduced by IBM in 1980, and it weighed over 500 pounds! It was called the IBM 3380 and was primarily used in large mainframe computers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Email Predates the World Wide Web**: Email was invented in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, while the World Wide Web was created later in 1989 by Tim Berners-Lee. This means that email has been around for longer than the web itself!
*The Origin of the @ Symbol**: The "@" symbol, commonly used in email addresses, was chosen by Ray Tomlinson because it was a character that was not commonly used in names. It signifies "at" and was used to separate the user's name from the computer name. *The First Smartphone**: The first smartphone, called the IBM Simon, was released in 1994. It had a touchscreen, could send emails, and even had apps, making it a precursor to modern smartphones.

The cell phones of today are the supercomputers of decades past.
Keep in mind that it took 4000-odd years from the Abacus for the mechanical calculator to be invented in 1642.
It wasn't until 200 years later in 1821 that Babbage and Lovelace created the Difference Engine and computer programming.
It was another century before ENIAC, the first electronic computer, was invented in 1942, and it had a footprint of 1,800ft²
It took only 30 years after that before the first PC, the Kenbak-1, was invented in 1971.
Ten years after that, the Osborne-1, the first laptop, was made.
Another ten years, and Apple created the world's first PDA, the Newton MessagePad in 1993, while IBM created the first smartphone, the Simon a year earlier.
14 years later, after flip-phones that have had internet access have been around for a while, as well as the IPod Touch, Apple announces the IPhone, with a clock speed of 412 MHz, 128Mb of RAM and a storage size of max 16 gigs.
Current phones blow that thing clear out of the water.
Seriously. A lot of what we have now would have been considered far-future science-fiction decades ago. Like, seriously, Star Trek alone has a lot of stuff that exists today while they thought it wouldn't for another few centuries!
Hell, if you visited Disney World and rode Spaceship Earth and the Carousel of Progress, one of the first things you'd note is that more or less everything they've predicted as being in the future can be easily found!
