Hiiiii! I was the one who asked about Henry and I want to say I LOVED the analysis. Also the mention of Eileen also made me thing how her and Henry's interactions show despite not knowing each other to well, you really sense their bond and care for one another. Also how Eileen is just such a KIND character to others even causing Young Walter to prevent his older self from killing her.

I’MMMMM so unwell about henry and eileen, especially with them together…!! even before they directly interact, it’s fascinating how they take notice of each other (eileen being one of the few people who remembers henry in passing + picks up on how he’s been missing for awhile, while henry sees her through the peephole and hole that reaches her apartment, both of which are when he's trying to make contact with the outside world), and in spite of contrasts on the surface like how outgoing they are, they both share the same core traits of humanity and altruism caring for others <:’’’)

i love how they get along very well and work together to understand the situation and figure out how to deal with it, especially given how they're now "properly" meeting and getting to know each other for the first time;; they're very cautious yet sweet with each other, and i also really appreciate how you note eileen's kind like henry too! henry generally keeps to himself offering help if/when the situation arises to jump to, while eileen's less reticent personality has her more outgoing and dedicated to going out of her way to express and continue providing sympathy, i think.

with her trying to understand the mystery, she expresses sympathy for young walter wanting to essentially give him peace and put him at rest even in spite of learning the truth of who he is, and she's gone out of her way to be kind like to giving a doll when she was young,, which has also ironically doomed her in the start, giving it to walter led to him latching onto her and exploit that kindness now intending to make her the mother reborn. both henry and eileen's kindness more often than not get them hurt and have their efforts unappreciated,, and yet they still persist.

they're both so lucky to have each other's backs in sh4 as they survive and can thrive together, henry and eileen compliment and support each other so well...!! there's so much i could keep talking about w them (either individually or together) but yeah, they're both so caring and it really shows with how secure they feel and gel with each other, the bond is so strong and easy to root for and wish the best for them

Okay. I've sat with this for a few hours and I still cannot figure it out. I don't know if playing Dancing With The Devil during Sun and Lin's sex scene this week was brilliant or not. Because listen, it absolutely did not fit the show or the characters. Don't get me wrong, it's a banger of a song that I have been listening to since Big Dragon aired BUT it was not the appropriate song for that scene.

However, I'm sure MosBank fans (myself included) appreciated the throwback. I was literally just telling @heretherebedork that I think Dancing With The Devil is a much better ISBANKY song than Pink Sea (the Sunset X Vibes opening) when I got to that scene and had my soul snatched out of my body. So I can't decide if it was brilliant to use that song as a kind of love note to MosBank fans or if it was just plain bad.

I think I have to land on somewhere in the middle. I think it was a bad choice show wise. It had no business being in the show, but at the same time the show already had a lot of issues and I thought the song/sound choices were not the greatest the whole time. But it was a good choice for fans. Which is fun and all but I wish it had been a different song. Well looks like typing this helped me figure out my feelings on the matter.

By choosing Dancing With The Devil, they betrayed the show and the story they were trying to tell (I know I know it wasn't done well up to that point either but hear me out). Dancing With The Devil belonged in Big Dragon. It belonged with Mangkorn and Yai because it completely fit their characters and their dynamic throughout the whole show. It does not fit Sun and Lin. Even at their...surliest, their meanest, their most devlish, neither one could accurately be labeled a devil. And especially not in a scene where they are coming together in an act of love (god I almost threw up typing that because I can't stand emotions but that's what that scene was). It felt disingenuous to the characters to have a song that did not represent them playing.

Now, with all that said, I want to make myself clear. I still loved it. I love that song every time I hear it. So I will criticize the choice to use it when a more fitting song should have been chosen, but I will still enjoy the scene and the show for what it is/was. This might be the first time that a song choice that took me out of a show and the scene did not ruin my enjoyment of the scene. It's truly a mixed bag. I am full of contradictions and multitudes and they are all coming out and being represented by that fucking song choice. Anyway, that is to say, go listen to ISBANKY's music. It's good and he deserves some more love there.

poor wean's da got et by a 'bon. now he wants 'em all dead. wiv' crossy eyes like them as drawed in the picture shows. dinnae get et and ye might be his new da.

he actually made me think about two things - the npcs/people we've helped along the way, and the writing of accents.

it's no secret i gave biff this accent - it tells you he ain't a city slicker but rather a rural boy, it tells you his folks ain't got a lotta money (at least, one would think), and it associates him with a specific cultural/ethnic profile (gaelic, i know/studied a little more about irish than scots so i lean irish)

i think we should, as a society, be wary of continuing to associate class with specific ethnic communities, but i'm not learned enough to make a post dedicated to my specific thoughts on that (yet? tbd)

mostly, i think it's important to look at the way characters speak as a vehicle of writing. when you write a character's accent, is it useful for what you're trying to establish in the scene? is the noble supposed to fail to understand the vernacular of his server? is it useful if the character is always going to say "dinnae" instead of "do not"? when dealing with non-western characters with accents, how far is it okay to go until the dialogue goes from representation to racist charicature?

writers have the power of flexibility. writing is about persuasion more than anything else, and we should remember to persuade our audiences that these are people. they aren't real, so don't bother with "realistic" - but they represent real ideas, concepts and associations in our world. it's important to be careful what you do with these, intended or not! and if you make an oopsie? acknowledge, accept and continue on your journey to being your best.

my preferences for writing accents based on my experiences, observations and education lean thus:

pick and choose what words require emphasis. if the whole sentence requires it, then so be it! but make conscious choices. words weigh differently, and they carry double the weight when they're written out to represent an accent. just really think about whether or not this is the point you want to say to, t', ta, or tae. the whole sentence doesn't need to be written out phonetically b/c avoiding doing that helps us steer clear of reiterating caricatures.

include culturally specific verbiage. "what's the craic" or "how's it hangin'" depending on who your character is. in india, lots of people greet each other with religious phrases (in english, it'd sound like saying "god is good"/"good is god" call and response) - so a thavnairian character could say anything between "sisters be with you" to "mindhurva guide your path today" (and also yours, brother/sister). but also: wain, wean, child, sweetling,

be careful which non-english words your character uses. i don't call it chai tea latte, i call it chai latte. my wife doesn't call it green tea latte, but matcha latte. i actually don't drink chai latte, i drink chai. but i call it both chai and tea interchangeably; so, when i want someone to know how to prepare my tea, i might ask for chai instead of tea. because with chai, you get half or whole base milk instead of water. you get dried ginger or an array of spices depending on the auntie. with tea, you get dried up leaves and some hot water. big difference for me.

above all, make sure it's legible most of the time. you can do this by avoiding writing a character's accent out completely phonetically. this isn't to say "conform your character to what people think they should talk like". this is about being aware that writing implies an audience. if you want your writing to connect with people, the important parts should be clearly communicated in the text. especially if you're writing in english. if i wanted my characters to speak hindi, why would i bother writing the story in english at all? you want people to see your character a specific way. write them the way you hope they'll be seen--if you've done a good enough job, it will lead to so much joy and satisfaction. if you haven't--it's back to the drawing board! but you get the chance to learn even more.
