It was the night of the annual Dark Land Ball, one of the biggest celebrations in the Koopa Kingdom. Everyone was invited, and of course, Bowser and his seven Koopalings would be making an appearance. They were wearing their very best, and had scattered amongst the crowd to make the most of their evening. Morton busied himself by the snack table, Lemmy hit the dance floor to show off his breakdancing, and Ludwig and Wendy stood on the sidelines gossiping about everyone they saw.

Iggy stared wistfully at something, or someone, across the floor.

“So, are you gonna ask him to dance?” Lemmy asked, nearly startling his brother into a heart attack.

“Damnit Lemmy! Don’t sneak up on me like that! And. I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Iggy said facetiously, crossing his arms.

“Really? You don��t? You’ve just been making googoo eyes at that same ice trooper for like, an entire month now. You know I don’t think he would’ve showed up if not for you.”

“You think? No… I don’t even think he likes me.”

“Is that why he’s always down in the lab helping with your experiments?”

“I don’t know!! I’ve never even liked anyone before, Lemmy!! How am I supposed to know how it works? Why can’t there just be some straightforward foolproof test I can do to find out if he likes me without getting my feelings hurt? This is all too hard. I should’ve never even come tonight.”

“Iggy.” Lemmy climbed up on a chair to be at eye level with his brother, putting a hand on his shoulder. “You can test it out by asking him. Iggy swallowed, glancing back over his shoulder. His object of interest was standing by himself now, sipping some punch and staring out onto the dance floor.

It took everything in him to drag himself over there. The soldier looked up, eyes lighting up as Iggy approached. This was one of the few times Iggy saw him without his helmet. His hair looked nice.

“Oh, hey Iggs! Good to see you here.” He smiled.

Iggy could feel his heart practically beating out of his chest. “H-hey Damien! Good to see you too!” He stared at the floor, finding it suddenly almost impossible to maintain eye contact, not that he was good at that under normal circumstances either. “Iwaswonderingifyou’dliketodancewithme?”

He blurted out, sucking in a deep breath and clamping a hand over his mouth.

Damien’s eyes widened.

Shit shit shit. “Sorry! Lemmy dared me to! Forget it ever happened and I’ll be going now—“

Damien grabbed Iggy by the hand, stopping him in his tracks.

“I’d love to dance with you.” Damien said.

“O-oh—… you would?” Iggy stammered, feeling his face getting hot.

“Move over! I wanna see!!” Lemmy was hopping up and down, before Morton picked his shorter brother up and sat him on his shoulders.

“HE SAID YES!!” Lemmy fell backward off of Morton’s back, catching himself on a perfectly placed circus ball. He bounced back into the air.

“Pay up!” Lemmy held out his hand, and Roy begrudgingly shoved twenty bucks into his brother’s palm.

Iggy vaguely heard Lemmy squeal in the background, glancing behind him for a moment to see his tiny brother giving him a thumbs up. He laughed, turning his attention to Damien. “Sorry in advance… I’m not too good at this whole dancing thing.” He admitted. “I looked up tutorials online but it just doesn’t come easy to me.”

“I don’t really know how either, it’s okay. I doubt most of the people here do. Koopas aren’t exactly known for being graceful.” Damien laughed. “Why don’t we just see what feels right?”

Iggy nodded happily. “Yeah! I think I can do that.”

They spun out into the crowd, nervous at first, but then laughing, what were they afraid of before? The moon glowed bright and full across the lakes of fire, smoke twisting in the distant sky.

Study finds SARS-CoV-2 in US blood donated before January 19, 2020

AbstractBackgroundThe first COVID-19 case in the United States was recognized on January 19, 2020, but the time of introduction of the virus into the US is unknown. An existing sample cohort was examined for serologic evidence of early SARS-CoV-2 infections.Material and MethodsA repository of 46,120 samples from healthy routine blood donors, representing 46 States and DC were tested for total antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (anti-N) using a commercial test. All reactive samples were further tested using an experimental receptor-binding-domain (RBD)-specific IgG ELISA. Further testing was also conducted for anti-spike (anti-S) by commercial tests, experimental anti-S immunologic blocking, and for antibodies to the four human cold coronaviruses.ResultsAnti-N reactivity was observed in 92 (0.2%) tested samples, 91 which had adequate volume for further testing; of these, 55 confirmed positive by anti-RBD. None of these reactive findings were attributable to the other human coronaviruses tested. Confirmed-positive frequency increased over time paralleling patterns observed for COVID-19 cases reported in the US (in contrast to stable patterns over time for the cold coronaviruses). Nine (0.07%) confirmed-positives were identified among the 13,364 donations collected between December 13, 2019 and January 22, 2020. None of these early confirmed-positive samples was reactive by commercial anti-S tests suggesting very recent infection.DiscussionThe samples tested in this study were broadly representative of the US and all were from individuals who had successfully given blood. He watches the ginger haired king release the motionless form of his white haired friend…his partner’s body slumped over as it was the chains that were stopping his body from falling onto the dirty ground.

“Iggs?..” Genzou quietly called out with a shaky voice. His usual cockiness was completely gone, broken, as he looked at the body in front of him.

“Iggy!?” Genzou called out once more but louder this time. He didn’t even notice his body trembling as he continued to look at the body of the man he was supposed to protect. The man he was supposed to love. The man he was supposed to hold every single night.

His thoughts were interrupted by a loud bark of laughter coming from the King of the land. Slowly, Genzou lifted up his head and looked up at Orlam. He never felt so much hatred against Orlam until now. Orlam looks down at the teary mess that Genzou had become.

“What’s the matter, Gennyzou? No more witty comments?” Orlam ‘playfully’ pinched Genzou’s cheek with a victorious grin. Genzou grimaced by Orlam’s touch as his gaze lays upon Iggy’s body once more. On Father's Day, I feel like asking people (even those who got their Hepatitis B childhood vax series) to check their Hep B blood titers for immunoglobulins (IgG) since my father was claimed by Hep B that grew into liver cancer. He died at age 44.

A blood test revealed I had to redo my Hep B vax series at age 30. The blood test indicated every other antibodies of childhood vaccine series held up fine to “immunity” levels, but not the Hepatitis B one.

Lab Tour

hi y'all, I said I would do this, so here's a short walkthrough of the instruments in the lab I work in ^_^

This is our coagulation study machine! It runs tests for PT, PTT, and D-dimer. (One of my coworkers is doing a QC study which is why you see that note on there.)

These are the hematology analyzers! The 690 runs with cassettes (you can see them in front) and so you can put multiple samples on the machine and walk away. The 520 is our smaller back-up machine. It's very cute :) but when the 690 is down it's a pain bc the 520 can only run 1 sample at a time.

These are our chemistry analyzers. The AU is what we call the "big" analyzer. It does all the metabolic panels, toxicology, and A1Cs. The Access is the "little" analyzer. It takes care of cardiac biomarkers, thyroid hormones, and other assorted tests not covered by the AU.

Here are the micro machines! On the left is the Cepheid. It's a PCR machine. We run a variety of tests on it, like the "Fourplex" (RSV, COVID, Influenza A and B), Strep A, Strep B, Chlamydia/Gonorrhea, etc. And on the right is our Bactec, for blood cultures.

This is the Clinitek! It's a urine strip reader. Basically, we take urine, we dip a test strip in it, blot the strip, and put it on the machine. Depending on the results, we then look at the urine under a microscope. For example, if nitrates and leukocytes (WBCs) are present, we would look at the urine microscopically. There, if we saw bacteria, we could basically confirm a UTI.

Finally, this is the Blood Bank centrifuge/incubator. We use gel cards for all our blood banking. The incubator is for IgG antibody screens. Our blood banking is done manually (some bigger hospitals have machines to do it, which is cool, but I do enjoy the manual method).

Aaaand yeah! That's basically it! I did leave out the centrifuges (2 for blood and 1 for urine) but those aren't that exciting lol. Thanks for coming with meeeee :)
