Hii there! Sorry to be a pain in the arse, but please can you edit your text post about Imogen's second signet. The small text looks awesome, but I can't read it very well with my eyes, even with my glasses on. I have double vision so all I'm seeing is interlapping lines 😭 so sorry xx
As requested :-)
——————————————————————————
Onyx Storm
— Ending Theory #2 —
MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
Question/Theory (2): How did Imogen save Dain & herself? — Does Imogen have a Second Signet? — Here’s why I think she does & what I think it is:
"You have a second signet, don't you?" And like Xaden, he hid the strongest one. — Violet Sorrengail to Garrick Tavis, Chapter 11
This shows the pre-existing patterns/plans of the children of the rebellion (even more so; their dragons) hiding the strongest “weapons” they have.
While Imogen’s known signet is pretty powerful as is, this doesn’t count against the theory, as much like Xaden shows the “known” signet can be nearly just as powerful as the unknown (so it’s not like a contest of “topping it” in a manner that she could not).
It is also something they hide no-matter what (not purely as a “secret weapon”) but because having two signets goes against the rules & endangers them all in itself.
This does get further complicated in some cases (such as Xaden; where his need for hiding his signet is also out of the signet itself being a death sentence). Though it does beg the question of who (if anyone) knows about Imogen’s second signet?.. and what that may mean for the power level of whatever it is?.. I’m willing to bet it’s closer to a Garrick situation than a Xaden, as Dain does witness it (& while this was not the goal) it did not seem to be a death sentence (nor something she needed to take the time to make him forget)… Though the biggest question still stands of what is allowed and whatever that means in terms of the “magical balance” of their nature demands… posing the question:
How many of the same signets can exist on the same side? What is “the balance”? And is there such a thing as “signet-gaps”?
"At its core magic demands balance." — Chapter 60 Prologue (Iron Flame)
Time and time again this is said… but what does it really mean?
"There is only one exception to the rule, Violet Sorrengail. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to be you." — Theophanie to Violet Sorrengail, Chapter 60
When Theophanie tells Violet she is "the only exception" to “the rule”… this could very well be due to the anomaly of a shadow & lightning wielder being alive at the same time (two shadows, one per side, and one lightning total) however (unless I missed something which I very may well have) I presume it meant/hinted at something more.
Such as there being a “counter” or “Dark-Wielder-self” per signet we know.
"I think you exposed your desperation with your once-a-century comment. You need me." "Another will come along," she warns. "You are not special." — Violet Sorrengail to Theophanie, Chapter 60
Violet may not be “the only one” or special as much as she is rare, but there is some balance the world is waiting on in what it allows to occur at one time.
"My signet is always the balance," Bodhi argues, lifting his hand as the wind rises to a constant roar at our backs. "I can stop her!" "You can't!" I push again, and this time he stumbles sideways. "Your signet must only work on our magic, not theirs." — Bodhi Durran to Violet Sorrengail, Chapter 60
Despite Bodhi’s power; it shows it is not him. He is not the balance… or at least not theirs… Much like how magic doesn’t work on dragons, there is a difference within the Venin; and whatever that all does to the “rules of magic”. He cannot be the counter for them all… so what is (if Violet is the only un-countered signet)?
"She isn't the dark wielder version of you." — "She's their answer to my mother." — "She was the answer to me,". — Bodhi Durran, Violet Sorrengail, & Theophanie, Chapter 60
This notes "the answer" from both sides. And that “magic balance” I’m speaking of… it seems like a similar structure to how signets are formed around need (Xaden needs to know who to trust = he can read intentions, Violet is desperate to speak to a sleeping Andarna = she can dream-walk) there is a storm-wielding Venin = Lilith Sorrengail the storm-wielding General.
"That's not possible," Imogen says. I turn around, reaching for a dagger, and freeze completely. Lynx stands in the middle of the hallway, shaking from head to foot, staring at the darkness that envelops his hands. "It's all right." Rhiannon rushes to Lynx's side. "Breathe. You're just..." "Manifesting," Xaden says, putting himself in front of Lynx. "Don't be scared. They're defending you. Fear. Anger. Whatever it is, level out your emotions, and they'll recede." Manifesting? Shadows? "I can't—" Lynx shakes his head, and the shadows creep up his arms. "You can," Xaden assures him. "Close your eyes and think of the place you feel safest. Go ahead." Lynx slams his eyes shut. "Good job. Now breathe deeply and picture yourself there. Calm. Happy. Safe." Xaden watches as the shadows recede. Lynx's breaths even out, and his hands reappear. "Get him to Carr now," Xaden orders Rhiannon, and she nods. The squad ushers Lynx down the hall, but I stay behind, shock gluing my feet to the carpet. "I don't understand. You're our generation's shadow wielder." "Not anymore. Magic knows." Xaden's shoulders dip as he turns slowly to face me, his brow scrunching in apology before he schools his features. "He's the balance." — Xaden Riorson to Violet Sorrengail & friends, Chapter 46
Something that appears to shock everyone; Imogen included… while this may have simply been the shock of shadows, or a fear of an attack, or even a rapidly turning Xaden, etc. it doesn’t change the fact they are all shocked… which implies some of these “once in a century” skills are very unknown in what the world of magic “allows” (especially when already intentionally “breaking the rules” as their dragons seem to be doing in choosing them).
"Heads up," Garrick says, and we both look forward as a first-year with a rebellion relic steps into the pit with Timin Kagiso-the newly promoted wingleader for Second Wing. "Let's try to keep anyone else from burning." Go figure another fire wielder was Second Wing's executive officer when Aura died. — Garrick Tavis to Violet Sorrengail, Chapter 28
Finally, the note that there are known multiples of signets (for-instance) flame-wielders as shown above. And the possibility that they switch out upon death?..
And in many other moments it is shown that signet “categories” can be vastly unique & frankly complicated… for instance the world of Intinnsics. While true intinnsics are killed, truth-sayers are not. Along with many other signets in the “mind-category” that skirt the edge (or don’t fully encompass) that which would get them killed, while being highly classified and quite similar to that of “full intinnsics” (like Xaden & Violet; who also have powers that take very different forms despite both being kinds of intinnsics; key word “kinds”) as very much seen in the spectrum of “minds” between Imogen, Dain, and Varish’s abilities.
We are also shown some signets that did appear at the same time (even if we didn’t know it) this may possibly be due to the rebellion relics or the fact they are second signets but it does occur; for instance Liam & Ridoc (both are ice-wielders).
"Are you pissed I didn't tell you?" I shake my head. "You don't owe me your friends' secrets." My brow knits. "But twenty hours of flying gave me some time to think. You. Garrick." I tilt my head. "And I once thought I saw Liam..." "—Wield ice," Xaden says, stroking his thumb along my chin. I nod. "How often do second signets accompany these particular relics?" My fingers trail down the side of his neck. "Often enough to be sure Kaori can't possibly have accurate records, but not too completely that anyone questions why I only present with one," he answers. "Our dragons came looking for us. They knew what they were doing." "Giving you a better chance of survival?" I rest my hand over his heart. "If you wax sentimental. More like building their own army." A corner of his mouth rises. "More signets equal more power." — Xaden Riorson to Violet Sorrengail (in reference to the rebellion), Chapter 12
This discussion confirms that there are not only “second signets” that we do not know about, but also a habit of the "marked ones" / “children of the rebellion” being chosen for them leading to further questions on a “dragons rebellion” (which I will discuss further in an upcoming post).
All in all this makes it far more likely for Imogen to not only have a second signet as a marked rebel, but also keep unknown to us/Violet/or even Kaori at this time.
Continuing on the note of “knowledge” / the danger these secrets pose in knowing them, it’s worth noting:
"Hey, Bodhi?" I whisper so only the two of us can hear. "Hey, Violet?" he answers, looking up. "What's your second signet?" I lower my voice even more. He lifts his brows, then glances in Garrick's direction. "Don't have one." "As in you don't have one that I get to know about but will eventually see you wield, or don't have one have one?" A corner of his mouth lifts into a wry smile that reminds me of his cousin's. "Don't have one. Just like Xaden. Why?" "Curious," I admit. — Violet Sorrengail to Bodhi Durran, Chapter 28
Violet does not ask to know about everyone else… even going so far as to later ask Bodhi if he had one. Meaning another inner-circle & third-year bestie like Imogen could very well have one.
Finally, on the note of “what” that signet may be & the known powers of Imogen + the primary OS quote that brought this to my (and apparently Dain’s) attention:
Another set of footsteps joins mine, and a flash of metal sparks in the corner of my eye. Aetos catches up on my right, half his face drenched in blood, bearing his own dagger and a shield half his size. Shit. That's not good. Twenty. I channel my rage, rejecting any notion of fear, and draw one of my alloy-hilted daggers from the sheath at my arm in preparation to strike. We're almost there—The dark wielder pivots, whipping to face us with an unnatural speed even I can't match, and swings his staff in our direction. Fire erupts, barreling toward us in a deadly stream, and I weigh our options for all of a millisecond as we skid to a halt. It hits? We die. Jump? We die. "You will not burn!" Glane demands. Fuck, I really didn't want to have to do this, but I mentally open the door to my childhood home and flood my body with her power. "Get—" Aetos starts to yell. "Get behind me!" I shout, ripping the shield from his grip. His eyes flare wide, and he lets go. We have seconds, so I flip the shield, then slam its flat top between the row of stones at our feet and drop behind it, keeping my hand on the leather strap. Aetos jumps behind me as power rushes into my fingers so quickly I clench my teeth to keep from screaming. Heat surrounds us and the leather hardens in my grip as the shield turns to stone. Fire roars, blazes, flows around us. We are the rock in the river, demanding the water part. The heat dissipates as the blast ends, and Aetos dives to the left and throws. An alloy-hilted dagger sails from his hand and I rise, clutching my own. The dark wielder's expression of shock remains permanent as he desiccates a few feet away and falls off the wall. One down, but the guards are missing from the top of the turret, and I see a flash of purple disappear into the tower. Worse, another dressed in crimson strides along the eastern wall. Aetos jumps to his feet and draws his remaining dagger. "I'll take that one. You get the one in the tower." He glances at the stone shield, then breaks into a run, and I follow, sprinting as fast as I can. "And we're going to talk about whatever the fuck that just was later," he shouts over his shoulder, but l've already passed him, using lesser magic to boost my speed. — Imogen Cardulo, Glane, & Dain Aetos, Chapter 63.
First off: Imogen’s known & shown signet is short-term-memory wiping… this in itself is of course VERY powerful, classified, & helpful; most likely explaining the ending of this book & leaving us without plot holes in power (like that which Liam had)… this signet would even be extremely helpful for concealing a second signet. And so far, this signet has fit ever feat we have seen her do, with the other “how” being lesser magic in that she (like Xaden) uses & states here "to boost speed". However, none of this accounts for the way she survived above. Or even some actions that would be out of character, for example the fact that she risked her life for Dain; I am not saying she wouldn’t, or even did risk it intentionally (she may have simply been refusing to cower behind him & unnecessary chivalry, or realizing the fastest way was to save them both) but jumping in here without a plan seems like too much a risk for too little a relationship to me… unless she had a way that was not some fluke or freak accident… perhaps it had something to do with the runes she goes to work on shortly, again mentioned by a mark on Dain Violet notes earlier (I’ll discuss this more in an upcoming post). But honestly, all of that fails to clearly answer the how of how she & Dain survived that & the way in which it is described. To me, that screams only one answer; a Second Signet.
This moment is also questioned & jarring to the characters themselves as Dain takes the moment to note its oddity while adding it to his “list of things to talk about later” (which began with the reveal of another second signet to him in the form of Garrick’s distance-wielding, making it even more fitting to end with one too).
+ Let us not forget (as Liam’s ice mentioned in FW came to prove itself right in OS) Rebecca doesn’t leave plot-holes. She leaves clues. And even more often adds details specifically & with intention.
In this moment Imogen describes "throwing open a door" in her mind (a very common phrasing for magic & the control of it among dragon-riders) one that she did not want to visit (or perhaps more so, did not want to reveal) with this timing & placement (“exposure to Dain”). But seeing as its life or death, she does as a last resort. Furthermore, on the note of “last resorts” the phrasing is extra intriguing to me because her thought of grounding comfort is also one of pain & in itself reminds me of somewhere she would "not want to visit" & has kept shut away… similar to how a hidden second signet would be treated.
Glane tells her, “demands”/nearly-commands her "not to burn" (& while the way dragons show affection is often in a “don’t die” way) they have already covered this base earlier; it feels more like a reminder/order to open that “forbidden” power & door to said second signet. One that would do exactly what we see her do; stop her from burning.
Not to mention the fact she is “flooding” herself with power, this would be senseless right now if her only signet was short-term memory-loss. That will not stop the Venin Dark Wielders or flame, nor prevent them from burning, or protect her/Dain in any way we know of. Nor would lesser magic. So, anything she’s summoning has to have a different purpose… and she’s gather a lot of it.
And then we see this series of events that does not make sense with any other answer: Imogen forcing Dain behind her. Taking his weak shield that is smaller than them in size and not large enough to block flames (or by the sounds of it even sustain in materials & burnable leather against such a thing). Flipping it (again… odd), and slamming it into stone (I imagine this is not an easy thing to do as that sounds like breaking solid rock at your feet) and then seemingly it becomes stone itself. As Imogen stays holding on to it, not burning as heat goes around them, only feeling pain from a rush of power. Not to mention the question of where that stone appeared from in the first place (I can’t imagine a Dark Wielder taking aim right in front of a pillar of stone large enough to hide them). And then she says it; she IS the rock. She demands it to part. (Also, while this may be a stretch that means nothing; rock is mentioned heavily in the upcoming scenes, including the runes being formed, and the ground turning gray & draining while not yet harming that which she stands on).
As far as what powers that leads us with, we can of course, eliminate many that make no sense; both from these “requirements” & the plot (as an example: healing… if Imogen had that signet she would’ve saved Quinn right then and there… whatever her power is, it was at its limit & without that capacity). Originally, I did think it could be some sort of Flame-wielder but that still wouldn’t explain turning to stone. Then I considered welding (some sort of Metallurgist like Sawyer), however, the more and more I read, I think that Imogen truly meant what she said (and it’s the biggest clue Yarros gave, therefore silly to ignore & guess around) she turned it to stone. So, if not directly some sort of “rock-wielder” maybe some sort of “changing-materials”? Though I do think rock is the strongest theory, as if she had any substance at her fingertips, I’d guess there are more fire-proof options she would’ve used (unless it’s limited to that which she can touch… still… she didn’t pick what the shield was made of; she chose to change it to rock).
And who knows, (many second signets make a lot of sense in hindsight) so maybe that’s why she weight trains with Violet (she just makes rock weights lol… okay, that’s a stretch) but that’s the closest theory-ish thoughts I have!
P.S. final thought — why does Imogen say:
I unsheathe my last alloy-hilted dagger and stare up at the wyvern-filled sky. Then I make my way back inside, slip Quinn's last dagger from her thigh sheath, and reach for Glane. "Tell every rider within the walls to get over here and disarm. It's the only way we're living through this." — Imogen Cardulo, Chapter 63
Could this possible hint at the Second Signet as well? — Why else would disarming be helpful (as opposed to dangerous)? — Maybe she can turn these walls into the alloy if it is a substance-shifting signet… or do something with the walls material & stone?
So, in total I think there is only one conclusion; Imogen has a Second Signet & it rocks (literally).

it's the 1st October so it is officially threshing!!!
reminder that chapter 8 of like daylight does include an scene from Bodhi and Imogen's threshing if you want to go check that out
and under the cut is the scene itself
Threshing - October 1st:
“Okay, you can do this. There’s dragons that like rebellion relics, they can sense the magic in them, we think. They’ll want you. Just look for them and you’ll be okay.” Xaden said. Both of the younger friends nodded as they headed towards the valley that Threshing took place in.
“See you on the other side?” Imogen asked, as they moved to turn away.
“On the other side, Ims.” Bodhi smiled as they began to walk away from each other.
Not long after they’d separated, Bodhi heard a voice behind him, “Ah! The traitor of the year. Or at least the number one traitor. There’s seven of you, right? Seven little Tyrrish bitches running round trying to be riders. As if a dragon would bond with one of you.”
Bodhi turned around, and a few of the cadets from Third Wing had gathered. Each of them were armed. Bodhi was too but they outnumbered him 4 to 1. “You know, 8 marked cadets bonded last year. So…” he shrugged casually, making no big deal and beginning to walk away. Another cadet came up behind him from a different angle, swiping his leg with a blade they’d hidden.
“Not so bold now.” One of them tried to mock him. With blood pouring down his leg and a gaping wound, he swung around pulling the sword strapped to his back free.
He sliced in a diagonal motion, cutting open the arms of the two cadets in the middle. He swung again, sliced a line down the centre of another’s chest. “Who wants to have a go at me then? Because I stared down the back of a dragon throat when I was 16 and lived. Come on, don’t just stare at the Tyrrish traitor,” He taunted, laughing as the blood dripped from his sword. He looked insane but he didn’t really care.
They scurried off and once Bodhi could be sure he was alone, he dropped to his knee, “Fuck,” he whispered, slicing off the sleeve of his shirt, tying on his thigh using a stick as a tourniquet. Using one of his blades, he sawed off the ends until the stick was short enough to walk with attached to his leg.
After maybe half an hour, forty-five minutes later, the most beautiful dragon that Bodhi had ever seen landed in front of him. He’d grown up in Aretia, living in Riorson House, so he was used to seeing dragons from a distance. But to see one up this close was astonishing. All he wanted was to speak to the dragon but he knew that dragons never spoke to anyone but their riders.
”Hi.”
Bodhi looked around for the voice, but he was alone.
”I’m in front of you.”
Bodhi turned back around but in front of him was only the majestic green swordtail.
”Thank you! A majestic dragon for her royal rider."
“What?” Bodhi asked, out loud.
”I’m your dragon, Cuir. I’d tell you my full name but you’re bleeding a little too much for it.”
“I’m fine. I’m Bodhi Durran by the way.”
”I know that. Dragons know all about their riders.”
“Wow, I have a dragon. I’m a rider.”
”Now get on. It’s time to go back and get that leg checked out.”
“It’s fine. I’ve dealt with worse.”
”You shouldn’t have to.”
Bodhi climbed on his dragon’s - Cuir’s - back and settled in for the short flight out of the valley and over to the flight field. As she drew closer, he could see the brown of Garrick’s dragon, Chradh, and the navy of Xaden’s dragon, Sgaeyl. And now he had a dragon, a gorgeous green one who was far more beautiful than theirs. He tried to look but he was still too high to see Imogen’s distinctive pink hair. He wondered what dragon she would have bonded. Maybe an orange or a red. It definitely wouldn’t be a blue or brown. Imogen had always been fiercely independent and wouldn’t ever want to feel like she was copying Xaden or Garrick. Especially Garrick. So there was no way she bonded a scorpiontail either. Imogen was just like that. She always had to be better than the boys. Ever since they were little kids.
Cuir landed and Bodhi stumbled a little as he dismounted. The altitude combined with the blood loss from his leg wound made him a little off balance. ”Careful, Little One.”
”Little One?”
”You are shorter than your cousin. And you two are the royals of your province.”
Bodhi smiled as he headed over to give his dragon’s name to the roll keeper. After he headed over to the healer tent to get his leg sewn up. Imogen joined him, unable to keep the grin off her own face. “I bonded!”
“Of course you did!”
“Her name is Glane and she’s an oranger daggertail and I just love her.”
“Mine is called Cuir and she’s a green swordtail and so beautiful.” Imogen continued to talk about her and Quinn’s dragons as Bodhi’s leg was stitched by a healer cadet. “Ims-” He nudged her as Xaden and Garrick approached.
“You both bonded. I knew you would. Well done,” Xaden said, keeping his voice low as he spoke.
“Tell us about your dragons,” Garrick prompted, wrapping one arm around Imogen and messing up Bodhi’s curls with the other hand.

Xaden, Violet, Garrick and Bodhi sitting at the kitchen table in Riorson House
Bodhi: is Imogen okay?
Violet: she said she’s fine…what?
Bodhi and Garrick exchanging looks
Xaden: When Imogen says she’s fine she’s really not.
Garrick: Yeah, every “I’m fine” she says in a row is a clear indication of how not fine she is
Violet: …oh
Garrick: Violet, how many times did Imogen say she’s fine?
Violet:
Bodhi: Violet?
Violet:…eight
Xaden and Bodhi in unison: FUCK
Garrick: I’ll get Chradh to warn Glane. Bodhi you find that revenge list Imogen wrote during first year and you lock those cadets in a room and ward it. Xaden, call The Assembly. I’ll take her to the sparring mats. This is a code pink everyone, we knew this day was coming - Bodhi stop crying we need a united front

How similar are dragons to their riders?
very, very similar.
Let's start with Ridoc and Aotrom: it's kind of self explanatory. These two are of the same age, play pranks on each other, and Aotrom might just be protective of his loved ones like Ridoc.
Mira and Teine: The protectiveness Mira has for Violet, Teine has for her. Both of them have dry humour and an awesome streak. Mira doesn't have coordinating with other riders or fliers, and neither does Teine with other dragons.
Sawyer and Sliseage: These two are really adorable. Like, insanely adorable. Also, they're comparatively sane.
Imogen and Glane: These two have a ruthless streak but a soft side and a crush (which is of their respective species ofc)
Lilith and Aimsir: based on assumptions, these two only appear when needed. Both of them have a no crap attitude and have seen a lot of things in life. Honestly, their literally the same person in different fonts. (How I wish Aotrom does not turn out to be Aimsir's child or else I'll cry)
Bodhi and Cuir: both of them have a calm nature and give no trouble. Really nice person and dragon (fuck u daddy aetos).
Cath and Dain: don't tell me Cath wasn't disowned as well. Also, these two give "self- loathing" energy so bad
Rhiannon and Feirge: if Rhi and Feirge don't turn out be royals or smt I'll cry. These two have the commanding vibe, like they can command a crowd really well. They also have their priorities straight and aren't hot headed while making decisions.
Garrick and Chradh: no way in hell these two don't exchange dragon-human gossip Ober a cup of tea (or coffee) every day and Chradh does not torment him about his (hopefully they exist) feelings for imogen.
Xaden and Sgaeyl: there is no other dragon that will resemble Xaden more than Sgaeyl. Appreciation of asshole-ry towards them bcs it's attractive and badass? Being dramatic as fuck when my mate's bonded (or wife's) said something rude to me? Head over heels for their love? Mutual support towards Andarna? "I find it hot when my love kills" vibes? PLEASE. The graduated from the same school of Brooding and Lies. They were raised together in the Institute of I NEED Therapy but Omg My Love is so Attractive.
Also, don't tell me sgaeyl was never even once in her life in denial abt her feelings about Tairn.
Violet and Tairn: Tairn's image among people and Violet's image among people is LITERALLY THE SAME. Tairn agrees that he isn't the strongest but everyone else? Who tf is Codagh? Violet thinks she isn't the strongest but everyone else? "I'd rather lick my dragon's shit than piss her off." BOTH of them are protective towards others but they don't intervene when their loved ones are being confrontational. They let them handle it. Also, they don't like lies at all. Especially if it's Sgaeyl or Xaden lying.
Violet and Andarna: they are LITERALLY the same person. Not even different font. Just different species. Both of them being different? Holy hell. Both of them finding it hard to belong somewhere where their parents left them (andarna in vale and vi in quadrant)? Both of them being babied by Tairn even if he refuses to acknowledge it? Both of them having a violent nature? Being extremely vicious? Like Andarna doesn't know about her not being able to bear a rider, Violet did not know about her sacrifice. But their parents (tairn and sgaeyl in Andarn's case) did. Violet being reminded of her as a teen after seeing how andarna acts? Them losing a part of their autonomy when someone made decisions for them? Also, them MUTUALLY COMMITING TREASON?????

How physically strong Garrick Tavis actually is?
I was just re-reading Imogen’s chapter in Onix Storm and Garrick lifts Imogen while she is holding Quinn. He actually lifts the weight of two people and walk. We know Violet is petite and probably easy to lift, but Imogen is not. It’s clear on her chapter that she has muscles enough to keep her seat when Glane is upside down and strong enough to fight using swords. Even if we assumed Quinn is not so muscled, she is still strong enough to hold her seat.
Just a random thought about how riders basically super heroes.

The (Other) Gauntlet
Summary: Dain tries to win over Sloane’s loved ones before asking for her hand in marriage. Title is a throwback to “Watching with the Angels,” where Liam references the gauntlet of their friends in his letter.
Warning: slapping of an adult child by his father
Word Count: 2486
This is my contribution to Day 7 of Slain Week. Thank you @empyreanevents for all of the work you put into organizing this. It's been such a fun challenge to participate in each day. And a special shoutout to my other half @violencelittlething. I love the worlds we've created and all of our messages.
____
Dain had done well for himself on the Gauntlet his first year. He studied it, practiced diligently, and placed in the top two times in his squad, coming in only below Imogen. He was proud of himself, accepting congratulations and claps on the shoulder from squadmates and other first year cadets, including a mildly impressed look from Imogen herself. He was on a high when he went to Presentation and left the meadow feeling sure that a red swordtail who had approached him would choose him two days later at Threshing. As he made his way back to the barracks, though, a hand gripped his shoulder painfully, pulling him off his path.
Colonel Aetos stood glowering in a dark corner, clearly having been waiting for his son. “Losing to a marked one,” he sneered. “Are you trying to embarrass this family, this war college, Navarre itself or did you just not try hard enough?” Dain looked down at his boots, avoiding his father’s stern gaze.
“Look at me godsdamnit!” Dain obeyed his father’s command, just as he always did.
“I’m sorry, Father. Cardulo is fast, faster than anyone in our squad, and —” Dain was cut off by his father’s hand slapping his face.
“I don’t want to hear your excuses, boy. You better bond one hell of a dragon. I will not be embarrassed like this again. You’re dismissed.” Col. Aetos walked away, leaving his son ashamed and hurting.
__
It had been years since Dain had occasion to think about the Gauntlet. Today, though, he couldn’t help but think it might pale in comparison to the challenge he was about to put himself up against. Dain was a man who wanted and tried to do things the proper way. He was regimented about making his bed, folded clothes with precision, and even kept his beard neatly trimmed at all times. So it was only natural that he would want to seek the blessing of the father of the girl he intended to marry. But Isaac Mairi wasn’t able to consent to Sloane’s marriage, to welcome Dain into his family while warning him not to hurt his little girl. Nor was Liam there to take up the mantle for his father. Some men might have been relieved by those circumstances, but not Dain. Instead, Dain would seek the approval of the people who considered Sloane their sister: Imogen, Bodhi, Garrick, and Xaden.
Dain was most worried about the last person on that list. Xaden Riorson was not his biggest fan. He was cordial enough to Dain, graciously allowed Dain to live in his home, and hadn’t killed him yet, but Dain knew that this was different. Dain was asking Xaden not only to bless him officially joining their family, but asking him to trust him with Sloane, asking him to one day love and nurture nieces and nephews who shared half their DNA with the son of the man who got his brother killed. Dain also knew that while Sloane would appreciate that he thought to include Imogen, Bodhi, and Garrick, it was Xaden’s approval that meant the most to her. Still, Dain decided to save the brooding King for last.
After a quick pep talk, Dain left his and Sloane’s wing of Riorson House and headed outside, where he hoped to meet Imogen on her way back from her morning run. Sloane was spending the day in town with Violet and Rhiannon, so he knew she wouldn’t happen upon any of his conversations. He waited nervously, perched on the stone steps. Cath, can you ask Glane how far out Imogen is? Cath was not amused by this request. I’ve told you, Brave One, I am not a carrier pigeon. And I do not enjoy speaking to Glane. I barely tolerate speaking to Thoirt, though I suppose I’ll have to get over that if your mission goes as planned. Dain sighed, running his hands through his hair. Finally, a glimpse of pink hair came into his field of vision and he stood to greet her.
“You my welcome party, Aetos?” Imogen asked as she began her cooldown stretches.
“Something like that. Good run? Make good time?”
“Why, yes, Wingleader, it was a good run.”
“I haven’t been your wingleader in years, Cardulo.”
“Correct, but you also haven’t been this interested in my exercise regimen since you were my wingleader. What’s going on? Don’t tell me you fucked up again and I’m about to find your girlfriend crying somewhere.”
Dain would have rolled his eyes if he weren’t so anxious.
“Okay, what’s wrong?” Imogen sighed. “Lay it on me.” She took a swill from her waterskin.
“I want to ask Sloane to marry me,” Dain said softly.
Imogen’s lips curved into a knowing smile. “Fucking finally!“
“You’re…happy about this?” Dain wasn’t sure if it would really be this easy or if he was in the middle of some trap.
Imogen nodded. Apart from Sloane, she was the marked one who trusted Dain the most. Years of being his squadmate had taught her that he was a good man and she had been one of the only people to stand up for him and the first to forgive him for telling his father about Athebyne.
“Sloane is going to be thrilled and you’re already part of the family anyways so you may as well make it official. Besides if you get her pregnant before you’re married — and unfortunately I know the two of you fuck like rabbits — Bodhi will get all flustered and will try to convince Xaden to execute you. Although on second thought, that would be entertaining to watch.”
“Imogen!”
“Okay, okay. This is good, Dain. Why are you being so squirrelly?”
“Because I’m not just telling you this to make conversation. I-I want your blessing.”
“My what now?” Imogen was genuinely confused.
“Your blessing to ask Sloane to marry me. Her dad and Liam aren’t here to give theirs, but you, Bodhi, Garrick, and Xaden are her family, her siblings. So I thought I’d ask each of you.”
Imogen had never in her life felt compelled to hug Dain Aetos, but at that moment she wanted to throw her arms around him. This sweet man loved Sloane, their collective baby sister, so much that he was willingly putting himself through four surely awkward conversations with people who trusted and tolerated him to varying degrees in order to fulfill tradition and make her happy.
“You have it.”
“That simple? You’re not going to make me go through some sort of trial or anything?”
“As far as I’m concerned, you’ve already gone through a trial. You’ve been loyal to Sloane and you’ve treated her well.” Imogen stared into Dain’s eyes. “And that will continue or I will make the rest of your short life a living hell, so much so that you’ll be begging for Malek. Am I clear?”
Dain, still shocked, nodded enthusiastically. “Cyrstal clear. I, uh, didn’t expect this to be so easy.”
Imogen chuckled. “Hate to break it to you, but I’m the easiest yes you’ll get. The boys…well, they might need a little more convincing.” Dain groaned.
“Come on, I’ll help you find Bodhi or Garrick. But I’m not sticking around to help! You’ll do that on your own.”
Dain and Imogen walked into the fortress where they saw Garrick leaving the kitchen. “Good luck, Aetos.” Imogen said, giving Garrick a peck on the cheek before heading to shower.
Dain could feel Garrick sizing him up. It wasn’t often that the two of them found themselves alone with one another. “Need something?” Garrick asked.
“Yeah, actually. I want to talk about Sloane.”
At the mention of Sloane, Garrick stiffened, eyes narrowing on Dain as if he were prey. “What about Sloane?”
Dain knew he couldn’t waver, but gods damn was Garrick an imposing figure. Dain swallowed, finding his words. “I’d like your blessing to ask her to marry me.”
“Sit down.” Garrick gestured to the kitchen where they sat at the table. “You’re a brave man, Aetos. I assume if you’re coming to me, you’ll also be paying a visit to Xaden.”
“Yes. Bodhi as well.”
“Like I said, you’re a brave man.” Garrick sipped his coffee, looking at Dain expectantly. “Go on.”
Dain was silent, not knowing what else to say.
“Come on,” Garrick said. “You’ve got to give me more than just saying you want to marry her.”
“I love her, Garrick. She’s my entire world. She’s my reason for existing. Hell, I joined this family because of her. I live in this house – Xaden’s house – because I love her that much and she needs to be with all the people she loves. I know you don’t fully trust me and I don’t think you particularly like me, but Sloane does. And she loves you, Garrick. She calls you her biggest big brother. She just wants a big family, all of us together and I want to give her that.”
“And why should you be the one to give her that?”
Dain considered his question. “She loves me. You don’t have to like it, but she does. She chose me, just as Xaden chose Violet and you chose Imogen.” Garrick stroked his chin and nodded his head. “I’d die for her, but more than that I’ll live for her.”
They rose from the table, Garrick clapping Dain on the shoulder. “You’re good to go from where I stand, man. But know that if you ever hurt her, you’ll answer to me. And you’d do well to remember how good I am with a sword and how many weapons patches I earned in our Basgiath days. Good luck with the Riorson cousins!” Garrick called as he left the kitchen.
Two down, two to go.
Dain found Bodhi in the garden. He and Violet resurrected the garden that his mother once tended to, filling it with flowers and shrubs. They’d made it a truly beautiful, peaceful spot. Bodhi rose from the flower beds as he saw Dain approach. Bodhi and Dain got along well, for the most part. They’d had to coexist as wingleader and section leader in their third year, especially once the riot fled to Aretia, which became the basis for a tentative friendship. Bodhi was warm and welcoming, unlike his cousin, and he adored Sloane. He was the first to outwardly refer to Sloane as his baby sister, the first to test whether she’d accept that title coming from anyone other than Liam. To his delight – to everyone’s delight – she did. He was protective and known to flash that Riorson temper when it came to Sloane’s happiness, so Dain braced himself for a battle.
“Aetos, to what do I owe the pleasure?” Bodhi said, brushing dirt off his hands.
“I want to ask Sloane to marry me and I’d like your blessing.”
“No.” Bodhi’s answer came quicker than Dain expected.
“Excuse me?”
“Dain, there’s a process here. You don’t just get a ‘yes.’ You have to earn it. So, let’s go.” Bodhi led Dain to the sparring gym, claiming it’s traditional, dating back to the idea of winning a woman’s honor. Dain isn’t sure if that’s true, but he agrees to the match nonetheless. He lets Bodhi get in some good hits, but doesn’t hesitate to land some of his own. Dain technically wins, though it was a very even match throughout.
“Now you have my blessing. You’re a lucky man, Aetos. Don’t ever forget that. She’s our princess and we love her. You got a ring?”
“I do. It’s a ruby, her favorite.” Bodhi nodded approvingly.
“Bring it to me and I’ll put some runes in it for you. Or I can show you how to, but I’d really like to do it for her,” Bodhi said sincerely. Dain’s heart warmed, as it always did when anyone demonstrated their love and care for his girl.
“I’ll do that, assuming I’m still alive after seeing Xaden.” Dain was only half-joking.
Finally, Dain made his way to Xaden’s office. The office had once belonged to Fen Riorson and there was something symbolic about meeting the patriarch of their family, the literal King of Tyrrendor, in that space. Dain knocked tentatively, though the shadows that crept under the door had likely already informed their master that he had company. Xaden tells Dain to come in and have a seat.
“Are you here to see your King or your girlfriend’s brother?” Xaden asks.
“Sloane’s brother.” Xaden tenses. Though he’s not reading Dain’s mind or intentions, he’s not dumb. He knows what’s coming.
“I’m here to ask for your blessing to ask Sloane to marry me.” Dain starts the way he has with the others. “You’re the closest thing she has to Liam and while I know she considers Imogen, Garrick, and Bodhi to be her siblings, you’re the person whose approval means the most to her.” Xaden gives a small smile. “So, please, I’m asking for your blessing.”
Xaden sits back in his chair. “Liam loved that girl more than anything on this earth. And you’re right, I am the closest thing to him that she has left. So I’m going to approach this from that perspective, as Liam’s brother and his representative, who he entrusted his sister to before he took his last breath. Liam didn’t hate you. It annoyed me, to be honest. He would want Sloane to be cherished and appreciated. He would want her to be loved hard. He would want her to be with someone who would protect her at all costs and who would give anything to give her the life she wants and deserves.” Xaden sighed. “That’s you.” Dain’s eyes widened. “You’ve proven your devotion to her, your loyalty. You got through to her and got her to train her signet when none of us could. You know her, you see her. Liam would approve. And so do I. Welcome to the family, officially, Aetos.” Xaden stood to shake Dain’s hand.
“Now, I do have a sword and a shovel and a ruthless blue dragon who will roast you in seconds if you hurt her. But that won’t happen. I trust you with her.”
“Thank you, Xaden.”
Xaden reached into his desk and pulled out a decanter of Tyrrish whiskey and two glasses.”If you’re going to marry into this family, you’re probably going to need this from time to time,” he said as he poured them each a glass and pushed one over to Dain. He raised his glass “To Sloane.”
“To Sloane.”
Dain stayed to finish his drink, telling Xaden about his conversations with the others. When he left, Dain thought to himself about the gauntlet he’d gone through that day. He thought he’d feel beaten down after, but he felt good. He felt like he was truly a part of this crazy family and he couldn’t wait to get down on one knee.

Garrick and Imogen as promised, I'm close to begging RY for better descriptions in general but here we go

I'm trying to make each dragon a little different besides the tail and color so Glane came out a little chunky, and my demise might just be my handwriting but they were sabu-approved.
The next ones will be Violet and Xaden, hopefully in the next few days.

☀︎ World introduction
Basgiath, the war college of the Navarre kingdom. Every person at the age of 20 has to enter in order to become a dragon rider, a scribe or a healer. You choose. But the quadrant of riders means constant fights, manipulation, pushing your limits, torture and deaths. You'll never know when it's gonna be your last day. It's only for the brave or the crazy ones. You must be prepared for the consequences of your decision. And let's keep it clear, dragons chooses you, you don't choose them. "You sure I shouldn't ask Cuir or Chradh—"
"No." I start down the stairs. There's only one other person besides Bodhi and Garrick I can trust to prioritize Xaden's best interests, only one other person who can know the truth in its entirety. "Tell Glane I need Imogen."
— Violet Sorrengail, in the Onyx Storm prologue
"What did you do?" My head snaps toward Imogen, and a deep sense of foreboding takes root in my chest.
She slowly lifts her gaze to mine. "What you asked me to."
— Violet Sorrengail to Imogen Cardulo, during Chapter 66 of Onyx Storm

A Dragon’s Appellation (Pt. 2)
(Or, what I think the girls’ dragons call their riders).
Imogen:
Glane adores Imogen and completely caught her off guard when she called her human Blossom. Imogen lowkey hated it at first; didn’t her dragon see that she was a super powerful and strong Marked cadet? Why would she nickname her after a flower, of all things? It wasn’t until later that Glane confessed that she looked deeper than normal into Imogen and saw that she missed being allowed to be soft sometimes. Imogen hasn’t had a chance to be less than a warrior ever since her mom and sister were taken into custody, and every so often, she looks back and wishes she could still just be someone’s little sister instead of fighting at the forefront of a revolution. It’s okay, though — Glane will always see her as a little Blossom.
Sloane:
To Thoirt, Sloane will always be her Little Rose — Prickly and sharp on the way up, until it inevitably blooms red at the top. Sloane nearly had a heart attack the first time Thoirt called her that, because coincidentally enough, that’s what her father called her whenever she was upset. Slowly, though, it became very comforting, and although she still thinks of Isaac Mairi whenever she sees roses, she automatically thinks of the Red Daggertail when it comes to anything else. Every rose has its thorns, yes, and so does Sloane — but she also has Thoirt, whom she sometimes affectionately refers to as a “strawberry,” since the resemblance is immaculate.
Rhiannon:
Rhiannon was just, “girl” to Feirge for a while, actually. Now, though, the playful Green calls her rider her Darling, and it’s not even ironic or mocking. Feirge, for all of her stubbornness and attitude, loves loves loves Rhiannon. During Threshing, the Green dragon was rather picky with who she wanted to bond with, and when she laid her eyes on Rhi, she knew almost immediately that she was perfect and had so many amazing qualities. Of course, she didn’t want to look like she was super impressed by a human of all things, so Feirge reduced her to “girl,” and when they became closer in spirit (and Rhiannon actually survived War Games), she became Feirge’s Darling.
Mira:
Teine has always referred to Mira as Lasair, which means flame. Every child of Lilith Sorrengail has a certain something within them, and for Mira, Teine saw pure, unquenched fire within her when they bonded. He saw her passion, strength, and ferocity — that undying flame that could never be put out, even if all the water from the Emerald Sea tried to drown it. Sometimes, when Mira is down in the dumps, Teine will hum quietly in the back of her mind. She doesn’t know it, but it’s actually a lullaby for hatchlings and there’s no exact translation into Navarrian, but the closest thing it can get to is, “Sleep, Little Flame.”
Quinn:
Cruth was never really one for nicknames, but she found herself privately referring to her rider as her Sunbeam. I mean, take a look at Quinn and tell me you can’t guess why. Cruth has flown with five riders over the years, and none of them have been as positive and sweet as Quinn. During Threshing, after Cruth saw what was inside her, she flashed this giant smile that most dragons would assume to be a snarl, but Cruth just looked at her and went, “You really are just a pail full of sunlight, huh?” It sucks now, because now that Quinn is gone, Cruth is genuinely in the dark. Her little Sunbeam was taken from her — now what does she do?

chasing pavements
pairing: bodhi durran & imogen cardulo | bodhi durran & garrick tavis
genre: angst
synopsis: Manifesting signets is based on who riders are at their core. Based on what they need. What could Bodhi Durran and Imogen Cardulo possibly need to manifest their signets? After all, they may have some of the most rare signets of their year–why them? Bodhi can’t help but revisit past memories to realize why he manifested signet countering of all signets.
warnings: PLEASE READ. cursing, trauma, mentions of death, mentions of depression, very low self worth/views, mentions of an eating disorder, brother!garrick, xaden’s a bad cousin, takes place during FW & pre-FW, change in POV for flashback, this is very sad i’m so sorry…happy-ish ending!!!!!
w/c: 2.0k
a/n: primarily bodhi/imogen, secondary bodhi/garrick; song ➳ chasing pavements by adele; welcome to day 3: signet counter (i'm so sorry in advance) @empyreanevents
ྀིb.d week masterlist
ੈ✩‧₊˚
“Do you ever wonder why we manifested the signets we did?” Imogen’s question forces Bodhi to look at her, raising a brow at her sudden question.
The two second-years have been laying on Bodhi Durran’s bed for the last two hours, recovering from their RSC interrogation. They were absolutely beaten, and probably should have stopped at the healers quadrant to get patched up–but they couldn’t trust anyone. Instead, they resorted to Bodhi’s hidden first-aid kit, the one Xaden had supplied for him after Conscription Day. Now, they stared at the ceiling, no words being spoken as they remained lost in their thoughts.
i build myself up, and fly around in circles, waiting as my heart drops
“What do you mean?” Bodhi mutters, returning his gaze back to the ceiling.
“Mind wiping wasn’t the signet Glane’s previous rider had,” she pointed out. “Apparently, we manifest a signet that at our core, we need.”
Bodhi thought for a second, was that true? Glane was infamously known for messing around with her rider, so could her word really be taken?
Bodhi opens his bond with Cuir, “is that true? Our signets manifest based on who we are at our core?”
“Yes,” a sleepy yawn comes from Cuir, having been woken up by his rider.
“Cuir confirmed it,” Bodhi sounds out, noticing Imogen nod in his peripheral vision. “Why do you think you got mind wiping?”
Imogen went silent, most likely thinking. Bodhi thought too–why does he have signet countering? Now that he was really thinking about it, he had an inkling as to why–but he prayed to Amari that wasn’t the reasoning.
“I think it has to do with how people always perceived me,” Imogen confessed.
Bodhi knew exactly what she meant, it’s no secret that people are absolutely terrified of Imogen, she holds herself the same way Xaden does. An absolute menace. But, Bodhi knows she isn’t speaking in that regard. She’s referring to her time in the foster homes, when so many of their fellow marked ones and those who were homing her had seen her in her most vulnerable position.
“I remember, when we were in the homes,” Imogen’s voice is low, a vulnerable tone lacing her words. “I would pray to Malek every night to come take me so that nobody could see me that way anymore. I hated seeing the looks on everyone’s faces whenever they saw me. It made me want to run away.”
i'll never say enough
“Maybe your prayers were answered,” Bodhi says, watching as Imogen looks at him. “Just not in the sense you were asking. You can mind wipe anyone who sees a version of you that you don’t like.”
She chuckles, “Glane wouldn’t object, but I think Xaden wouldn’t approve.”
“Not if he doesn’t find out,” Bodhi shrugs, giving her a mischievous smile.
“Do you think if I wipe any memory of me from Garrick’s mind and act like one of the girls he usually takes to bed, he’ll get with me?” The question has Bodhi’s head whipping towards Imogen, eyes widened in horror.
“Absolutely not.” Bodhi retorts, wincing at how rude he sounded. “Garrick doesn’t indulge me in his love life, thank the gods, but I wouldn’t be able to handle you as one of those girls who practically jump him to go to bed with him.”
“Fair point.” Imogen laughs, a smile tugging at her lips. “Why do you think you manifested a signet counter?”
Bodhi hesitates, pretending he is thinking. He’s had an inkling as to why, and he knew it was why, but did he want it to be true? Absolutely-fucking-not. Bodhi always wished he could’ve done something to prevent the rebellion being exposed–maybe his family would still be alive. Sure, he had Xaden, but he feels he could’ve prevented everything. Maybe it was because he was a chronic empath, and naturally felt for everyone and everything.
should i give up?
The day his parents were burnt, he couldn’t help but have one poisonous thought going through his head as the flames engulfed his mother and father, who were holding hands. “Why couldn’t I stop it?” That same thought lingers in his head as he lays next to Imogen, shaking it away. He’s gotten better about those types of thoughts, but he still felt the same way.
Bodhi thinks back to that day, the day he lost his parents. He was sixteen, and absolutely scared. At that point, they had no idea if they were to die next or not. Before Xaden took responsibility for all of them. He remembers his body shaking to no end, not until Garrick wrapped a steady arm around his shoulders, tucking him under his arm. Garrick had grounded him, but that didn’t stop the lingering thoughts.
Why didn’t I stop it?
Why didn’t I urge Mom to get Uncle Fen to slow down? To be more careful?
They’re dead because of me–because I couldn’t stop it.
“You can’t tell anyone,” Bodhi’s voice is small and vulnerable, and he notices the way Imogen furrows her brows.
“I won’t,” she swears, putting her hand over her heart.
or should i just keep chasing pavements?
“After Mom and Dad’s death, I,” Bodhi gulps, trying to form his words. “I would always have these thoughts that I didn’t do enough to stop it.”
Imogen props herself up on her elbow, looking at Bodhi. He meets her gaze, trying to read her expression. “You couldn’t have stopped anything, we were sixteen,” she points out, leveling her look with Bodhi.
“I know,” he whispers. “But–I just, I think it was mostly because my mom’s death hurt too much. I refused to do anything for the first two months we were in the home. It made me unnaturally thin and gave me depression. All I would do was stare at the wall until sleep took me. Until Garrick intervened.”
Memories of the first two months in their foster home come flooding back, sending a shiver down Bodhi’s spine. He remembers being placed there with Xaden, Garrick, and Liam. Xaden was too preoccupied with the repercussions of the rebellion to notice what was happening with Bodhi. He hadn’t noticed the way Bodhi was crumbling.
He remembers a specific day that was especially grueling for him. A day that changed his state since the rebellion ending.
Memorizing the patterns on the wall has become second nature. It was an ugly wallpaper, but I didn’t mind it. My stomach grumbled, but I ignored it. I’d eat something before bed, probably my usual piece of bread. I faintly hear the sound of the door closing nearby, but I ignore it. I always ignore it. Two hands wrap around my armpits, hauling me to my feet. I turn around, getting whiplash before regaining my footing. Garrick stands in front of me, worry written all over his face.
“You need to eat,” Garrick urged.
“I’ll eat later,” I assured him, looking away from his piercing hazel eyes.
He scoffs, “what? You’ll eat some bread, and call it a day?”
I don't answer, I simply keep my gaze averted. I’m not sure if I’m annoyed that he knows or embarrassed that I’m only eating a slice of bread a day.
or would it be a waste?
“Xaden may not notice it, but I do. I know you’ve been reeling back into yourself these past two months–but I’m worried, Bo. I’m worried for your health.”
“I’m fine,” I bite back.
“No, you’re not. I’m not leaving this room until you agree to come eat a meal with me.”
Garrick crosses his arms over his chest, and I envy the way his physique has significantly increased. I’m the only one at fault for not training, no matter how many times Garrick tries to convince me–I always say no.
“We can have pasta,” Garrick offers, knowing how much I love it.
“What sauce?” I side-glance him, waiting for his answer.
“Red sauce, obviously.”
“Can I have chicken cubes in mine?” My voice comes out small and vulnerable, and I hate it. I know Garrick wouldn’t tease me for it, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it. I’m supposed to be strong and brave, like Xaden, just like how Dad taught me.
“That’s the best way to have it,” Garrick pointed out. “We can have chocolate cake afterwards. Won’t be as good, but I’ll try my best.”
I meet Garrick’s pleading gaze, and he wins me over. I subtly nod my head, watching the way Garrick’s face lights up. He grips my arm, pulling me out of the room I hadn’t left for two months straight–except to use the bathroom–as he makes a beeline for the kitchen. Nobody was around, thank the gods, the only person who was allowed to see me in this state was Garrick.
I watch as he hums a song his mother always sung, making our lunch and dessert with precision. The smell of pasta, chicken, and chocolate cake makes me much hungrier, ready to devour Garrick’s food.
even if i knew my place, should i leave it there?
“I didn’t know that,” she comments. Bodhi notices the way her eyes are filled with empathy, a stark contrast to the cold glare she gave everyone.
Bodhi will always be eternally grateful for what Garrick did for him, because had he not–well, Bodhi doesn’t think he’d be here today. Had he survived until Conscription Day, he wouldn’t have even crossed the parapet successfully.
Bodhi shrugs, “it’s in the past.”
“Do you still feel that way?”
“What?”
She rolls her eyes, “do you still feel like you could’ve prevented certain events?”
“Yes,” his confession comes out more raw than he intended. “I always thought I could stop those three assholes from killing Violet during Threshing. I’m not sure why, it’s not like I’m a god or a wingleader. I’m just a squad leader. I also thought I could stop Alic Tauri from picking on Garrick, even though I hadn’t even crossed the parapet at that point.”
“I would’ve loved to see you sneak into Basgiath to handle Prince Alic Tauri,” Imogen teases, pulling a laugh from Bodhi.
“Laugh all you want, nineteen year old Bodhi was very serious about it.”
“How’d you even know about it? They couldn’t send letters out,” Imogen questions.
Bodhi gives a sidewarded smirk, “I’ll never tell my secrets.”
Imogen lightly hits him, “curse you and your secret rule breaking.”
Bodhi laughs at Imogen’s antics, grateful for her teasing to lighten the tension that lingers in the room. She begins laughing with him, something that’s rare for her–but she knows Bodhi needs it. He’s one of her best friends, alongside Quinn.
even if it leads nowhere
She’d never tell Bodhi this, but she would choose his safety and happiness over everything, because that’s how much he means to her.
Bodhi would never tell Imogen how much their friendship means to him. He’s used to being overlooked, especially when Xaden exists. Sometimes he doesn’t mind living in the shadows, but on other days it's hard. Imogen is the only one who truly understands. He’d never tell her that she is the only one he truly feels comfortable confiding in, and that he would never tell another soul about what they just spoke about. Not even Xaden.
Teenager Bodhi would have never expected that he would manifest a signet that would partially satisfy the want to prevent terrible events that have already occurred. He never thought his overwhelming thoughts from his parents death would lead to that. Deep down, he knew he couldn’t have stopped any of the events that led to now, even if he already had his signet. Countering signets can only do so much, and even if he was a balance–he wasn’t a balance for everything. Eventually, he’d no longer be useful.
Bodhi couldn’t help but think back to his younger self, the young, innocent boy who dreamed of going into the riders quadrant like his father. He would expect to manifest a signet that would be powerful, just like Xaden. Not one that is a reassurance. But he knew that was his life. He was the reassurance.
The reassurance for the revolution.
The reassurance for the marked ones.
The reassurance for Xaden.
He didn’t know it yet, but he would be the reassurance for Tyrrendor.
Trauma is the root of manifesting signets.

*Edited on 02/10/2024 because I realized on my reread that Jack pushing energy on Violet likely isn’t actually a manifestation of his signet, as much as it is him using Venin powers*

*Editing to add new OS information*
Made this because I know I’ll forget many details by time book 3 comes out, and I figured I’d share it for those interested. It’s a combination of information from my own read throughs, and from The Empyrean Wiki.
Please let me know if you see any mistakes, or if you have more to add.
I decided against doing Flyers for the time being, as what information we have is rather limited.

SPOILERS FOR ONYX STORM BELOW
This is your last warning to avoid spoilers!

I have so many questions and thoughts about Onyx Storm and I thought I'd make a post about them. If you know the answers to any of the questions or just want to have a discussion, feel free to comment, DM me, or reblog!
First, I'm laying out the groups that were together at Draithus during the final battle:
Group 1: Imogen/Glane, Dain/Cath, Quinn/Cruth - the tower/walls
Group 2: Xaden/Sgaeyl - south
Group 3: Rhiannon/Feirge, Maren/Dajalair, Cat/Kiralair, Sawyer/Sliseag, Neve, Bragen, & Ridoc/Aotrom - helping the civilians evacuate at the Medaro Pass
Group 4: Brennan, Mira/Teine, and Tairn - escaping to the cliffs
Bodhi is a weird case because he starts off with Violet, then Cuir carries him away towards the cliffs, but then he is spotted by Cath to be with Xaden and then leaves Xaden to help Imogen at the tower. He doesn't actually speak after Cuir takes him away and RY doesn't explicitly state that the wound on Cuir's chest is ACTUALLY from a wyvern. That part I could be looking too much into, but we know Bodhi met up with Xaden at one point before Xaden took off on his own which is highly suspicious and the vagueness concerning him afterward is also strange.
Anyway, here are a list of questions I have and they are all out-of-order:
Who is Berwyn's son/sons as he mentions having another?
Why can't venin kill their Sages?
Why did Andarna come back so quickly? Was the bond actually severed or did she know what was going to happen on the battlefield? She didn't contribute to the fighting, did she? What did she learn with the irids?
Who is the new venin? The biggest suspect is, of course, Bodhi because of the strangeness surrounding him during the battle, the fact that Violet is now Duchess and he's not Duke of Tyrrendor, and the fact that he knew about Xaden's condition since the beginning. Garrick is also a contender, but I highly doubt it. I also wonder about Lindell or Lewellen. It isn't stated that they knew about his condition, but they are his adoptive fathers, so who knows? I'm also wondering about Kaori because of his obsession with Andarna and the venin seem to revere irids. Hear me out, but what about Tecarus? Theophanie was going on and on about giving Violet what she wants most and Tecarus has the ability to see someone's greatest desire... Queen Maraya is also now dead and he has the throne. It seems pretty ... coincidental.
How can alloy-hilted daggers kill dragons? And how was a Sage able to wield one? I thought they killed venin?
What is Berwyn's signet? He seems to be a dream-walker, too.
What power was Panchek given by Berwyn? The venin are overtaking the Continent, so it must be a personal power. Is he venin, too? His dragon died, but RY never mentioned Panchek dying with his dragon, right? Also, do we even know Panchek's signet? He seemed to know where Violet was at all times, so it may have something to do with location or maybe knowing particular people's futures/thoughts? Without touching? Did the venin give him a special signet?
Why did Jack call dragons villains? They've also been called gatekeepers of magic. Why are the Empyrean really? Are dragons actually bad? Why did the irids leave?
Why does only the Continent seem to have magic? Is it because that's where the dragons live? But they seem dependent on it, not the cause of the magic, so it has to be something else. The Isles have muted colors which makes me think venin are somehow involved, even though they never ran into one on the isles.
What is the connection between the Isles and the gods. Are gods connected to dragons? There are six gods and seven breeds of dragon, unless the irids actually aren't dragons in the traditional sense. Is there a seventh god? They may not be related at all, but it's interesting to think about. Six gods, six traditional breeds of dragons, six people with the most powerful signets all walking the Continent at the same time...
Xaden mentions that he knows of one other initiate that wanted to or tried to kill their Sage. Who is it? Jack?
Sages/Mavens can hide their eyes and veins, so I wonder who in Basgiath could be a Sage or Maven? I don't know why, but my bet's on Felix lol
What exactly is the interpretation of Violet's promise to Xaden? It's implied that she's to protect Tyrrendor and the end of the book seems to support that, but what did Xaden mean by "sound the alarm"? Wouldn't they just know he's venin because of his eyes?
What is the difference between being touched by a goddess and dedicated to a goddess? Are they compelled to follow the god/goddess's wishes like initiates are with Sages? Are Sages like some kind of dark god?
The irids mention being aligned rather than being bonded with dragons. What does that mean? It's these one-off comments that make me suspicious.
In the end, Violet wakes up with no memory of what happened after the fight with Theophanie and waking up in the courtyard of Riorson House. Here's what I think happened:
Xaden approached her with some sort of plan that involved stealing eggs from the hatchery (again, the number six: one of each breed?). Of course she joined him and some riders and elders tried to stop them and ended up dead by, apparently, Xaden. I'm inclined to think that other venin may have made it as far as the Vale and they were the ones to take out the riders and elders and Xaden and Violet (along with the other four riders) fought them off. Venin completely disappear when they're killed. Of course, wyvern don't, but maybe there were just venin involved, I don't know. Or maybe the Empyrean are the enemy and now there's going to be civil war between dragons. Anyway, then Violet asked Imogen to erase her memory so they couldn't read her mind and figure out what happened and Xaden and Sgaeyl fucked off to who knows where. Tairn is not going to be happy about that. It sounds like he was injured, too, or maybe his bond with Sgaeyl was broken? Can that happen? They can't be away from each other for long before feeling pain and Xaden left, so...
Anyway, Andarna says that she won't let 'them' burn Violet, so I'm assuming she's going to be charged with treason.
It's going to be an interesting 4th book, that's for sure.
Let me know your thoughts!
