The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, warning residents of extremely heavy rainfall on May 26, as the Southwest Monsoon continues its advance across southern India.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, the three southern states are expected to witness:
Extremely heavy rainfall
Thunderstorms and lightning
Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph
Isolated areas may experience very heavy to extremely heavy precipitation
The red alert has triggered precautionary measures in several districts, especially in Kerala, where widespread early monsoon showers have already caused significant damage.
📍 Kerala: Schools Closed in Multiple Districts
In response to the red alert, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority announced the closure of all educational institutions—including Anganwadis, CBSE and ICSE schools, professional colleges, tuition centres, and madrasas—in the following districts:
Thrissur
Idukki
Ernakulam
Wayanad
Kasargod
Several parts of Kerala reported uprooted trees, inundated homes, and flooding in low-lying regions due to Sunday’s pre-monsoon onslaught.

Both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are bracing for intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, particularly in:

The IMD has also issued orange alerts (indicating moderate to high risk) in parts of:
