This fall I had an amazing opportunity to work with Quora Education Center. Quora is a high school that serves students who have not always found success from traditional schools. They are experts at serving the unique needs of students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Developmental Cognitive Disabilities. I'm constantly honored to be invited into these types of unique educational scenarios. I also believe that simply not finding success elsewhere because of factors out of a childs control does NOT mean that child can't find success, or shouldn't be given the same platform for success as any other student. These are incredibly talented and smart students. Tomorrow at Lost in Translation- A Student Skateboard Art Exhibition there will be 25 skateboards on display from the students I worked with at Quora. What will NOT be on display is any form of identifying which boards belong to this particular group of students, because they are every bit as talented and worthy of public consumption as my best art students from any other school. Art and skateboarding are great connectors. I only brought 25 boards to Quora, I only worked with 25 students there. The art teacher I partnered with was exceptional, her and I are extremely proud to see 25 finished boards from this group that are amazing, ready to hang, and gallery art show finished! That's a 100% success rate because of the power of art and skateboarding. And because I gave these students the same challenge and project I'd give any other student. I'm proud of this. I'm proud to see these students succeeding. I hope you'll join us tomorrow night and help celebrate how amazing all of these kids are, no matter where they go to school or what they deal with at home. My first glimpse of Alaska in 25 years. My eyelids became uncomfortably heavy with an odd rush of moisture. It occurred to me where the roots of my love of the mountains were born, my childhood memories of awe. This place is special. It's going to be a very heavy week of getting reacquainted with myself as an artist. I haven't felt this intensity wave of inspiration in many, many years. Game on Alaska, let's get weird. It's been a great week touring the libraries of Minnesota and bringing some rad kids skateboards! Visited Chisago Lakes Library, Elk River Library, and Eden Prairie Library. Next up heading up to Aitkin tomorrow, and Cambridge Library, as well as Cedar Riverside Opportunity Center next week. I get super stoked when I see young people working through an illustration with truly remarkable artistic talent. I'm merely a facilitator, I rarely ever teach. I like to create a map of information through my talks, with examples of my own art, and by planting little seeds of knowledge and then let the kids connect the dots where they see fit.
