JR: Dieser Zusammenhang von Konkretem und Abstraktem, von Alltag und Weltgeschichte, von Liebe und Fortschritt – das ist ja einer, bei dem es, wenn man sie streng wissenschaftlich untersuchen will, stark darauf ankommt, Dinge danach zu unterscheiden, ob man sie ausrechnen kann oder nicht. Hier kommt die Sache mit dem Computer rein, richtig? DD: Ja, der ganze Handlungsstrang mit Paul und dem Zellulären Automaten – da geht es um die Frage der Irreduzibilität. Auf deutsch: Wie einfach darf man schwierige Sachen betrachten? Man muß sie ja vereinfachen, wenn man sie verändern will, um die Hebelpunkte zu finden – wenn alles nur immer superkompliziert ist, wenn man immer alle Alternativen sieht, wenn man stets sämtlichen Menschen in allen Punkten gerecht werden will, dann ist man gelähmt, dann gibt es keine Politik, keine Geschichte … JR: Keine Liebe. Wen ich nicht alle andern Menschen weniger faszinierend finde, also ihre vielen anziehenden Eigenschaften nicht ausblenden kann, werde ich mich nicht in diese eine konkrete Person verknallen können. DD: Ja, und alles hat Vor- und Nachteile, also wie soll ich mich entscheiden? Das geht nur praktisch, das geht nur über Reduktion. Und da kommt die Aufgabe der Modellbildung ins Spiel – was darf ich weglassen? Darüber denken vor allem Computerleute heute nach, so wie zu Diracs Zeiten vor allem mathematische Physiker darüber nachgedacht haben. Die besten Bücher zu diesem Thema, die ich kenne, sind erstens sämtliche Werke von Gregory Chaitin, zweitens „A New Kind of Science“ von Stephen Wolfram und drittens, wohl das lockerste, am leichtesten verständliche Buch auf dieser Liste, „The Lifebox, the Sheashell and the Soul“ von Rudy Rucker. Ich denke, das alles geht mit Leibniz los – manche datieren es noch weiter zurück, aber da werden die Sachen dann teilweise so … das ist so zugewuchert von nicht mehr nachvollziehbarer Historie, da spielt dann Theologie mit rein und vieles andere, das von heute aus gesehen nur mehr schwer zu entziffern ist. Also: Leibniz bis Stephen Wolfram, das wäre meine Lese-Empfehlung, wenn man da tiefer einsteigen will. Die Sache ist jedenfalls noch nicht fertig – und wie es irgendwo bei Stanislaw Lem mal heißt, die mathematische Beschreibung der Welt ist deshalb noch nicht abgeschlossen, weil die Schöpfung selbst, die Welt als solche, noch gar nicht abgeschlossen ist.

How do you feel about the rise of geek culture?

Do you think it is influencing how our generation thinks about politics?

When were you first aware of avid fans?

Why do you think you’re only a casual fan?

Do you think fandom matters?

Have you ever been to a fan convention and if not would you be willing to go or would it be too overwhelming?

This interview was conducted over a voice call via Facebook Messenger. Sara is a 22 year old graduate of Amherst College with a bachelor’s in Pre-Med minoring in Philosophy. We have known each other for nearly 15 years.

Lauren: How do you feel about the rise of geek culture?

Sara: Geek culture?

L: As in the fact that being a nerd isn’t a bad thing anymore.

S: Well overall intelligence is important. And I think it’s a good thing that people can be passionate about things but I do worry about it becoming too mainstream.

L: Really? How so?

S: I think if it becomes too mainstream it could resort to bullying.

L: Huh. Never thought about that. So...Like people just wearing glasses to actually make fun of people?

S:Something like that yeah.

L: That’s a very interesting perspective, Sara. I’ll remember that. Question 2...do you think geek culture is influencing how our generation thinks about politics?

S: I don’t know. That’s a good one. I’m not sure how the two intersect.

L: Personally this question makes me think of the current political climate and Harry Potter.

  S: Ah. Yes. I can see that. Voldemort and the Hunger Games did give us a big perspective on that and what might happen.

 L: Yeah. I saw a lot of stuff that was like: Be the hero you read about.

S: I think I saw those too.

L: Next question...when were you first aware of avid fans?

S: Harry Potter. The midnight book releases. My parents never let me go.

L: Same here. Question 4. Why do you think you’re only a casual fan? What’s up with that, Sara?

S: I don’t know...I ‘spose time mostly. But I also didn’t want to get too attached.

L: Fair. I do remember your Say Yes to the Dress phase though…

  S: Oh my god yeah.(laughs) I cried for like a week over a fictional breakup and it was concerning.

L: (smiles) Second to last question...Do you think fandom matters?

S: Yes. Absolutely. Identity and community are important.

L:Okay so the last question may come off as unprofessional because I would totally help with this but it can just be hypothetical.

S: Okay…

L: Have you ever been to a fan convention and would you be willing to go to one?

 S: I have not. But I’d love to.

4. have you committed any crimes?  how many and what were the reasons behind some?

“Hm? Oh, none that I recall. Perhaps a parking ticket here or there.” He offers a small smile that’s as polite as it is flat. None in this timeline, Hux adds to himself, and after all isn’t this Hosnian system perfectly happy and healthy -- for now? They might even stay that way if he can end the New Republic before it necessitates a Starkiller. His thoughts linger on a few crimes of a more personal nature. None he regrets, none without cause. Vengeance is as good a cause as any. And after Hosnian he can hardly afford to split hairs about a patricide or promotion-by-homicide here and there. He would do it again. Maybe he will.

5. how do sentient creatures act around you? ( terrified, friendly, aggressive etc… )

“Civil, if they are smart. Most are, I find. Those who are not... well, there are sometimes those who underestimate me. It has its advantages.” He frowns as if weighing whether or not the advantages are worth the trouble.

6. how do you react to traveling in space, can you handle the various aspects of it?  ( the darkness, limited resources, probability of ship being damaged, etc. )

“I am more accustomed to being on a ship than not. The resource management is second nature to me now. I enjoy it, in fact. An optimized voyage is a smooth voyage.” And even better is a voyage where the probability of ship being damaged is not 100%; cause of damage: lightsaber.

9. would you run or fight in a battle?  what are the causes?

“Neither. I would be on the bridge where I can see the larger picture. And then I would win.” His lips give a smug twitch. “But I have no qualms with a tactical retreat if that means I live to win another day.”

14. what are you afraid of?  what keeps you up at night?

“My work keeps me up at night. I’m a busy man, I can’t afford to lose sleep over anything less concrete than that.” He pauses, then shakes his head. “Irrelevant.” He could work less, of course, but then he would achieve less. Hux shudders to think of himself as a footnote to the galaxy. Not after all that blood, sweat, and tears -- even if little of it is his.

1. I am Zainab I Love simplicity. I mostly express myself with words drawings sometimes I find myself stuck so I get myself out. I like meditation feelings and colors especially white.

2. I see it as a free space for everyone. You can express yourself easily in transparency and peace.

3.To be honest I don’t really know well About The history of art and artists.

But I really enjoy seeing paintings and art. Every artist Has his own touch that makes him special.

4.Emotions or my biggest motivation and I always appreciate my feelings whatever it was sadness or happiness. I also love language and its vocabulary And that’s why I always look into the words and their meanings to get a drawing out of them.

5.Thank God, Even if the support was simple I appreciate whoever support me because in reality he loves what I create and that’s what’s important.

Interview 4: Three Seniors

  I began to wonder why there were so many groups for black students on campus and why they didn’t just make subgroups under BSM since it’s the largest and oldest organization. 

                                           Summary

   As proper freshman protocol, you go to at least the first general body meeting to see how you could fit into the organization. Some describe it feels like high school, but agree that there is no “rough waters” between BSM and other groups due to wanting to create unity at public events for all black students. 

Note: Most african students find their “home” organization in Oasis, although that clumps people together it’s nice to have events centered around people that are like you and resemble your life at home as far as offering food and etc.

- “Oasis and BSM is not combined because BSM clumps people and does not like to allow to give people to have voices.”

-”We only unify when there’s things like THIS that happen.. We should be building it for our children, economically. We Want to be able to live to fullest potential. The way to do this is by getting rid of institutional racism. We don’t have the same resources or history that allows us to fulfill our fullest potential. We are still at a disadvantage. Generally, we’re focused on brutality against black men although it’s affected black women/queer/no-conforming/trans. The movement is essentialized and it’s not what we should focus on. We should focus on all experiences. We should focus on building a community”

-  “Generally, education. Not in terms of going to college, but having it so children know their history that uplifts them, not just demeaning them. Systematic issues and institutes are issues (loans and etc.) Mental health awareness goes under radar. LGBTQ issues too. Also, black people need to love each other more.”

-BSM is a really big organization. The people WOULD be active but you have to have the right intentions and want to make your community active in certain ways. The intentions are “I want to be seen as a black student leader and acquire the power. Having certain perks and administrative support, better jobs and being in greek organizations. Because the goals are to do those things, they end up not helping the people with no voice. Only people with voices that would be fine either way would”
