Schrödinger’s Clock

So my buddy Khanh and I tore it apart and put it on a robot to monitor its accuracy over time. It is probably better to say we measured the hourglasses percision, but whatever.  Every three and a half minutes a photo resistor/LED pair sees that there is no more sand coming through the neck, records the elapsed time, and flips it over. We are using an Arduino on a bread board for street cred. There is also a 16Mb AT45DB161D flash ROM on-board to record the trial number, elapsed milliseconds, and average light levels when empty and full. Because the stepper motor is disabled except for the very brief times during the hourglass flips, it uses very little power.  The code saves every trial to a small flash ROM and can be restarted without losing much data if the input power fails.  A green LED was selected because I found that the cadimium sulphide photoresister is more sensitive to the blue/green spectrum than the reds and yellows. more info: http://www.dullbits.com/hardware/schrodingers-hourglass Schrödinger's cat and the clock: lessons for quantum gravity Robert Oeckl Published 3 November 2003 • 2003 IOP Publishing Ltd Abstract I review basic principles of the quantum mechanical measurement process in view of their implications for a quantum theory of general relativity. It turns out that a clock as an external classical device associated with the observer plays an essential role. This leads me to postulate a 'principle of the integrity of the observer'. It essentially requires the observer to be part of a classical domain connected throughout the measurement process. Mathematically this naturally leads to a formulation of quantum mechanics as a kind of topological quantum field theory. Significantly, quantities with a direct interpretation in terms of a measurement process are associated only with amplitudes for connected boundaries of compact regions of spacetime. I discuss some implications of my proposal such as in–out duality for states, delocalization of the 'collapse of the wavefunction' and locality of the description. Differences to existing approaches to quantum gravity are also highlighted.more info: https://arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/0306007 Schrödinger’s Clock™ A prototype of Schrödinger’s Clock™ has been built using a Raspberry Pi single-board computer to demonstrate all its features. When the Clock is not being observed, its state changes by displaying random times – sometimes correct and sometimes not – in the same way that Schrödinger’s Cat might be either alive or dead. Each second, the ‘state’ changes, and (with a nod to historical time-pieces), these changes are marked by sound of the recorded tick-tock from a 19th century regulator clock. However, if the built-in camera sees somebody observing the clock, the time is frozen to show either the ‘Wrong’ time, or to confirm that the time displayed represents ‘Now’.more info: https://schrodingers-clock.com/ Schrödinger’s Box Find your Schrödinger’s Hourglass inside the box on Translighters Games Translighters Games!
