This September the OUP Philosophy team honours John Duns Scotus (b. c. 1265/1266–d. 1308) as its Philosopher of the Month. Scotus was one of the most significant Christian philosophers and theologians of the medieval period. Scotus made important and influential contributions in metaphysics, ethics, and natural theology. Little was known of his life but he was born in Scotland, became a Franciscan monk, spent his learning and professional life at Oxford and Paris, and died in Cologne. Although Aristotle’s ideas were prevalent during the turn of the 13th century, he belonged to Franciscan tradition which, as opposed to Aristotle, emphasised the power of faith and will. He was also much influenced by Arabic philosophers, especially Avicenna, with their emphasis on Being as the metaphysical object.

Scotus’s approach to philosophy was characterised by rigorous philosophical analysis, meticulous exposition of arguments and its use of technical concepts. Because of his nuanced and technical reasoning, he was referred to as the “subtle doctor.” His univocal concept of being – the idea that words describing the nature of God mean the same thing as they apply to creatures and people – is also arguably his most famous position in this respect. He argued that we can apply certain predicates univocally to God and creatures with exactly the same meaning.

CONSEJOS PRÁCTICOS PARA LOS JÓVENES

En ocasiones escuchamos hermanos decir: “Los jóvenes son el futuro de la Iglesia”. Bueno, hasta cierto punto están en lo cierto, pero no del todo. Una de las cosas que debemos entender es que los jóvenes son el presente y el futuro de la Iglesia. Ellos son muy importantes para la obra del Señor. Los jóvenes tienen mucho potencial para llevar a cabo grandes cosas para la gloria de Dios. Por esta razón, animo a todos los jóvenes a que tomen en serio los consejos prácticos que estaremos observando en este folleto.

Recuerda a tu Creador en los días de tu juventud. Eclesiastés 12:1 “Acuérdate, pues, de tu Creador en los días de tu juventud, antes que vengan los días malos, y se acerquen los años en que digas: No tengo en ellos placer.” Este es un pasaje que debes recordar toda tu vida. Especialmente en tu juventud. Es imperativo que como joven des todo de ti al Señor. El se merece toda tu atención, ya que te da todo de El para que puedas vivir. Todos los jóvenes que no han puesto este pasaje en práctica se han encontrado en grandes problemas. Muchos jóvenes han perdido sus vidas a una temprana edad por haber olvidado a Dios y Su Palabra. Espero en Dios que este no sea el caso contigo.

Estudia la Biblia constantemente. Otro consejo practico que deseo que tengas presente en tu vida es el estudio de la Palabra de Dios. El estudio de la Biblia trae grandes beneficios a tu vida espiritual. La Biblia dice que ella tiene poder de Dios para salvar tu alma (Santiago 1:21; 2 Timoteo 3:15). Dios nos dice que en Su Palabra se encuentra la sabiduría y la inteligencia que tu necesitas (Deuteronomio 4:6). Si tu quieres ser sabio e inteligente necesitas leer, estudiar, y practicar las Escrituras en tu diario vivir. Dios nos exhorta a leer las Escrituras (1 Timoteo 4:13). ¿Qué tanto lees las Escrituras? ¿Qué tanto meditas en las Escrituras? Es mi oración que tú, como joven, medites profundamente en las Escrituras para que de esta manera hagas sabias decisiones en tu vida. Todos los jóvenes que han descuidado el estudio de la Biblia han caído en las garras de Satanás. Que este no sea el caso contigo. Recuerda que la Biblia puede ayudarte a no pecar contra Dios (Salmo 119:11; Mateo 4:1-11). Así que, estudia la Biblia todos los días y toma el tiempo para leer los siguientes pasajes bíblicos sobre el tema de estudiar la Biblia (Esdras 7:10; 1 Pedro 2:2; 2 Pedro 3:18; 2 Timoteo 2:15; Hechos 18:24).

Practica la oración constantemente. La oración es un ingrediente esencial para la vida del cristiano. Jesús, el Hijo de Dios, nos enseña lo importante que es la oración en la vida del hombre. Observa lo que dijo en Mateo 26:41: “Velad y orad para que no entréis en tentación, el espíritu a la verdad esta dispuesto pero la carne es débil.” La oración nos ayuda a no pecar contra Dios. Por esta razón es sumamente importante que la practiques en tu diario vivir. Jesús, el Hijo de Dios es nuestro gran ejemplo a seguir. En cierta ocasión, Jesús se levanto muy de mañana para practicar la oración (Marcos 1:35). Esto es lo que tú y yo necesitamos hacer para mantenernos en cercana comunicación con nuestro Padre Celestial. Te animo a que leas los siguientes pasajes en cuanto a la oración (Lucas 6:1ss; Efesios 6:18; Filipenses 4:6; Colosenses 4:2; 1 Tesalonicenses 5:21; Romanos 12:12).

**Se un gran ejemplo. **Este es un consejo muy práctico. El ser ejemplo trae grandes bendiciones, ya que venimos a ser una influencia positiva para todos aquellos que nos rodean. La Biblia nos exhorta a ser buenos ejemplos (1 Timoteo 4:12) en palabra, conducta, amor, espíritu, fe y pureza. Tu y yo tenemos que recordar que somos la sal de la tierra y la luz del mundo (Mateo 5:13-16). El ser un mal ejemplo traerá serias consecuencias. ¿Cómo te conocen en la escuela y en el trabajo? ¿Te conocen como un buen ejemplo, o un mal ejemplo? Espero que las respuestas a estas preguntas sean positivas y no negativas. La Biblia nos exhorta a imitar los buenos ejemplos (1 Corintios 4:16; 11:1; Filipenses 3:17; 3 Juan 11; 1 Pedro 2:21-22). Así que, te animo a que trates lo mejor posible de ser un excelente ejemplo, así como Jesús lo fue, y lo sigue siendo.

Respeta y obedece a tus padres. Uno de los mejores consejos que puedo darte es que respetes y obedezcas a tus padres en todo. Esto es lo que la Palabra inspirada por Dios nos enseña. Observa lo que dice el apóstol Pablo al respecto: “Hijos, obedece en el Señor a vuestros padres porque esto es justo, honra a tu padre y a tu madre porque este es el primer mandamiento con promesa, para que te vaya bien y seas de larga vida sobre la tierra.” Todos aquellos jóvenes que no han hecho caso a este pasaje han terminado sus vidas en la cárcel o en la avenida de la muerte. En lo personal, conozco muchos jóvenes que han muerto por causa de no escuchar los consejos sabios de sus padres. Espero en Dios que este no sea el caso contigo. Tus padres se merecen todo el respeto posible, ya que ellos se han preocupado por ti, y han provisto todo lo necesario para que puedas vivir. No seas un mal-agradecido, sino más bien, cuida de ellos y obedece lo que ellos te mandan. Ellos saben lo que es mejor para ti.

Anuncia el Evangelio a tus amigos. Otro consejo practico y de mucha importancia es el anunciar el evangelio de Cristo a tus amigos. La Biblia nos exhorta a ser evangelistas, esto es, personas que llevan las buenas nuevas de salvación a los perdidos (Marcos 16:15; Mateo 28:18-20; Mateo 4:19; Lucas 5:10; Marcos 1:17). La Biblia también nos exhorta a amar a nuestro prójimo (Marcos 12:31). Una de las maneras como podemos mostrar amor a nuestro prójimo es anunciándoles las buenas nuevas de salvación, para que de esta manera tengan la oportunidad de pasar la eternidad en el cielo. El anunciar el evangelio no es una opción, sino mas bien un mandamiento por parte del Señor. Si no obedecemos a este mandamiento Dios no estará contento con nosotros. Así que, te animo a que anuncies las buenas nuevas de salvación a todos tus amigos en la escuela y en el trabajo. Invítalos a los servicios de la Iglesia para que vengan y escuchen la Palabra de Dios. Seria muy hermoso que todos tus amigos fueran cristianos. Tú puedes contribuir para que este sea el caso.

Selecciona buenas compañías. Una de las cosas que ha metido en problemas a los jóvenes son sus amistades, las cuales no son una influencia positiva para ellos. La Biblia nos exhorta a que prestemos atención a la clase de amistades que debemos buscar. Observa lo que el apóstol Pablo nos dice en 1 Corintios 15:33: “No erréis, las malas compañías corrompen las buenas costumbres.” La versión Reina Valera 2000 dice: “No erréis; los malos compañeros corrompen el buen carácter.” En realidad este es el caso. Bien dice el dicho que “el que entre lobos anda, a aullar aprende.” También dice otro dicho: “El que entre la miel anda, algo se le pega.” Si tú te juntas con malas amistades, tarde que temprano estarás imitando sus malos caminos, y esto traerá serias consecuencias. Recuerda que las malas compañías no quieren que tú pases la eternidad en el cielo, sino más bien en el castigo eterno. No escuches a tus malas compañías, sino más bien, escucha a Dios y Su Palabra.

Recuerda los peligros del mundo. De acuerdo a la Biblia el mundo no tiene nada que ofrecerte. Observa lo que dice el apóstol Juan: “No améis al mundo ni las cosas que están en el mundo, si alguno ama al mundo el amor del Padre no esta en el. Porque todo lo que hay en el mundo, la pasión de la carne, la pasión de los ojos y la arrogancia de la vida, no proviene del Padre, sino del mundo. Y el mundo pasa, y también sus pasiones, pero el que hace la voluntad de Dios permanece para siempre.” Como podemos observar, el mundo pasa y sus deseos, pero el que hace la voluntad de Dios permanecerá para siempre. Lo único que el mundo ofrece es placer, pero solo por un corto tiempo (Hebreos 11:25). Después que has gozado de este breve placer, luego vienen las consecuencias. Recuerda que la paga del pecado es muerte (Romanos 6:23). La Biblia dice que cualquiera que se hace amigo del mundo se constituye enemigo de Dios (Santiago 4:4). Ser enemigo de Dios no es algo recomendable, ya que Dios es el único dador de la vida eterna. Y si el es tu enemigo, no podrás entrar al cielo. Así que, te animo a que deseches las practicas de este mundo y mejor sigue la santidad para que un día puedas ver a Dios (Hebreos 12:14).

Memoriza la Biblia. La memorización de las Escrituras nos puede ayudar para no pecar contra Dios (Salmo 119:11). Claro, es importante no solo memorizar, sino también practicar y vivir lo que memorizas. La Biblia nos exhorta a guardar la Palabra de Dios en nuestras mentes (Salmo 119:11; Deuteronomio 11:18; Proverbios 3:1-3; Proverbios 7:1-3). La práctica de la memorización te ayudara a poder saber que es lo que debes hacer en diferentes situaciones de tu vida. En estos momentos estas en tu juventud y tu cerebro tiene la capacidad de guardar y retener mucha información que te ayudara a poder entrar al cielo. Aprovecha este tiempo y dedícalo a la memorización de las Escrituras. Hoy en día necesitamos jóvenes como Apolos, un hombre poderoso en las Escrituras (Hechos 18:24).

Se sabio cuando pienses casarte. Este es uno de los consejos prácticos mas descuidado entre los jóvenes. El deseo de querer casarse muchas veces ciega el entendimiento de nuestros jóvenes, y en el final terminan llevando a cabo un gravísimo error. Te animo a que consideres profundamente la decisión de entrar en la relación del matrimonio. El matrimonio es una institución de suma importancia y por consiguiente debe ser tomado en serio. Cuando pienses casarte, te animo a que tengas en mente los siguientes consejos: (1) Asegúrate que en realidad deseas casarte, (2) busca una persona que te ayudara ir al cielo, (3) no te cases solo por la apariencia física, (4) recuerda que el matrimonio conlleva grandes responsabilidades, (5) recuerda que solo la fornicación es la razón por la cual puedes divorciarte (Mateo 19:9), (6) recuerda que el matrimonio es para toda la vida (Mateo 19:6), (7) recuerda las enseñanzas bíblicas sobre el matrimonio (Mateo 5; 19; 1 Corintios 7; Romanos 7). Estos son algunos consejos que podría darte. Espero en Dios que los consideres cuidadosamente.

Obedece el Evangelio. si todavía no lo has hecho Finalmente, otro consejo práctico que pudiera darte es el obedecer el evangelio de Cristo si es que todavía no lo has hecho. Hoy en día tenemos muchos jóvenes que todavía no han sido añadidos a la Iglesia de Cristo (Hechos 2:41, 47; Efesios 1:22-23; 5:23) por medio de la obediencia al evangelio. En el nombre del Señor te animo a que consideres profundamente donde estas en relación a tu salvación. Cristo puede venir en cualquier momento (Mateo 24:36-44; 1 Tesalonicenses 5:1-2). ¿Qué será de ti si no has obedecido el evangelio de Cristo? Bueno, la Biblia responde a esta pregunta en 2 Tesalonicenses 1:7-9, el cual te recomiendo que tomes el tiempo para leer. Dios desea tu salvación (2 Pedro 3:9; 1 Timoteo 2:4; Juan 3:16). Por lo tanto, es imperativo que escuches el evangelio (Romanos 10:17), creas en Cristo (Juan 8:24), te arrepientas de tus pecados (Hechos 2:38), confieses a Cristo como el Hijo de Dios (Romanos 10:9-10), y seas sumergido en las aguas del bautismo para el perdón de tus pecados (Hechos 2:38; 22:16; Marcos 16:16), y ser fiel hasta la muerte (Apocalipsis 2:10). Esto es lo que debes hacer para ser salvo. Si no has hecho esto, te animo en el nombre del Señor a que lo hagas meditando en tu salvación.

Apie piršlybas. Kai faktas jau aiškus, galiu kalbėti apie detales. Mano piršlybos nebuvo tokios, apie kokias visą gyvenimą svajojau. Ir dabar neseks sakinys “jos buvo daug geresnės”. Piršlybos buvo paprastos, įdomios, neįprastos ir netikėtos, nors ir tikėtos. Italijoje, prie Komo ežero, aplankėme labai daug gražių vietų ir kiekvienoje būčiau norėjusi, kad man pasipirštų. Simas pasipiršimui pasirinko lietingą dieną (aš dievinu lietų), kai apsirengę sportiškai - aš vilkėjau Simo pūkinę liemenė, džinsin�� švarką, džemperį, sportines tampres ir kedus - kilome į kalno viršūnę, kurios pavadinimas - ERNA (kaip supratote per kelionę ir kalnus įsimylėjau). Planavome hike’inti. Ant Ernos viršūnės “užkibo” debesis ir pakilus nesimatė n i e k o! O turėjo matytis visas ežeras, gražūs miesteliai ir įspūdinga panorama. O ant viršūnės (1,366 km) mačiau tik Simą ir mūsų skėčius. Kalno viršūnę debesyje jis pasirinko kaip vietą piršlyboms. Ir tai yra mūsų istorijos pradžia ☁️ Neįprasta sužadėtuvių vieta dviems neįprastiems žmonėms, ir už tai aš Simą myliu - kad išgirdęs, jog kalnai nuo šiol yra mano didžiausia aistra, jis nusprendė, kad vilų ir pilių piršlybų aš tikėčiausi, bet giliai širdy norėčiau kalno viršūnės debesy. DARWINISTS FLOUNDER AGAIN - ORIGIN OF LIFE PHOSPHATE PROBLEM

BY BRIAN THOMAS, PH.D. - Institute for Creation Research Research associated with the Simos Foundation’s Collaboration of the Origins of Life offers a new answer to an old problem for getting a soup of chemicals to somehow turn into a living cell. Assuming that life arose spontaneously, how did the rarely available element phosphorus get concentrated into high enough amounts to supposedly incorporate itself into the many essential biochemicals that contain phosphorus? DNA and RNA molecules come packed with phosphorus—and phosphorus forms part of proteins. You can’t have cellular life without all three types of these molecules: DNA, RNA, and proteins. In today’s world, phosphorus in watery solution readily binds calcium to form calcium phosphate minerals. Imagined early emerging cells could not access phosphate that was tied up in minerals. They would have needed some type of free-floating phosphates. Jonathan Toner and David Caitling from the University of Washington described their solution to the phosphorus problem in their coauthored article appearing in the journal PNAS.1 In it, they propose that freely available phosphate could have concentrated in shallow, salty lakes. If the imaginary ancient lakes had high enough carbonate content, the researchers argue, then that carbonate would shove some phosphates aside. This standard chemical process would produce calcium carbonate minerals in place of some calcium phosphate, liberating a few phosphates to spontaneously form living cells out of a dead soup. Lead author Toner told the University of Washington, “It solves the phosphate problem in an elegant and plausible way.”2 Now, with the phosphate problem supposedly solved, does this increase the probability that a soup of chemicals would form a living cell? It’s one thing for iron, carbon, and chromium to swirl together, but another thing entirely for those raw ingredients to form steel all by themselves. In fact, they don’t. People must combine them in specified ratios and conditions. Then to shape that steel into the forms needed to build a car represents an entirely separate and more sophisticated level of direction and skill. The same logic applies to DNA, RNA, and proteins—and entire cells. Just because you have some DNA does not necessarily mean it contains biological information. Programming is required. But naturalists, by definition, disdain any notion of a programmer. Study author Caitling said, “The extremely high phosphate levels in these lakes and ponds would have driven reactions that put phosphorus into the molecular building blocks of RNA, proteins, and fats, all of which were needed to get life going.”2 So, phosphate would have driven reactions to put itself into RNA and proteins? Which chemistry experiments show that has ever happened? Instead, their drying lake scenario places phosphate in watery solution—a lethal problem for the origin of life. Water destroys DNA, RNA and protein, ensuring that these vital biochemicals would never form outside of purposeful, protective, precise boundaries like those that envelop living cells.3 Even provided all the phosphate one could wish, the old life-from-soup scenarios “suffer from bioenergetic and thermodynamic failings.”4 Not to mention the specification of programming language that living cells require.5 Cellular life doesn’t just need phosphorus. It needs proteins to integrate phosphorus into its DNA, RNA, and proteins. It needs water to mobilize chemicals, but cannot form with water around. It needs energy but cannot access energy without the cellular energy systems already in place. It needs encyclopedias of growth, adaptation, and maintenance instructions, but cannot write any information on its own. In short, it needs help from outside the universe. This recent phosphorus study only solves the phosphate problem for life’s origin in one’s imagination. In reality, the watery surroundings of phosphate soup douse sparks of life’s required chemicals.
