2014年春に私ケニーがボストンからNYCへ移居して来て直ぐにアメリカ人の現在は日本で国際音楽エンタメ系の仕事をしている我がボストン時代からの親友の紹介で日系のロックバンド達（The RicecookersやThe Astorplace、GELATINE/ゼラチン 等々）との対バンのギグで出逢ったロビン。その年の夏からこのアルバム ・ サークルフィールドがリリースされ翌年の夏にロビンが日本ツアーへ出たりする頃まで個人的に一緒に活動したりしてました。

(First time I met with REB was when I moved in NYC from Boston back in spring 2014, and was introduced by my American best friend, who currently works in Japan for an international entertainment agency. It was all-Japanese-band gig in lower Manhattan (*the bands are above). Since then upon the next summer after REB went on Japan tour with their debut full-length album “Circlefield,” I was kinda working with them together as a show manager, video-photographer, and liner-notes writer, etc. (Most importantly, they were, for me, my label HEARTRICK Records and our collective common-unity MELTRO Bridge co-founders back then.)         

ラジオ本編ではあまりお話しできなかった裏話として。

「サークルフィールド」をロビンが作り込んでいた2014年夏、プライベートでは一緒にロビンの二人と仲間でフェスなどへ遊びに行って、アルバム制作中の裏話として「次の作品まだ聞かせれないけど、ケニーは絶対好きだよ！」ってフェスから帰るサブウェイの中で話してくれていたのを昨日のことのように覚えています。

(When they were in the term of creating “Circlefield” in the summer 2014, privately we hung out to like Celebrate Brooklyn and SummerStage then they secretly sneaked peak me out that saying “Kennyy, you’ll love our new record, def!” which I still remember the moment...preciously.)

「サークルフィールド」のCD盤のライナーノーツは私の音楽ジャーナリストのキャリアの中でも特に思入れの強いお仕事でして。魂の籠っている執筆であり作品なので 、 もしお気に召した方はロビンのオフィシャルショップのみで入手出来ますので手に取って頂きたい。それぐらいの一家に一枚、永久保存の名盤です！！（ ＊ みんなで一緒にDIY/DITで作り上げていた作品で 、入稿ギリギリでもあったので校正の余裕もなくめっちゃ誤字脱字があるままプリントされてしまったのが心残りですが…苦笑 それも作品の味ということで、ぜひとも。笑）

(So their is my written-up liner-note included in the Japanese CD version of “Circlefield” and this project was one of the most and so much strongly considerable and memorable feeling under my music journalist career. Therefore, if you’d like their song “They Do, I Do,” please buy the CD for your music collection forever. )

プロデューサーでもあるGt.マーシーさんがエンジニアさんと最後に作品のマスタリングをしている間、僕も寝ずに必死にこのライナーの執筆をしてて入稿して、アートデザインをするVo.Atsumiさんがそれを読み上げた時、感動して泣いてくれたことも僕の音楽ライター人生で一生忘れられないことでしょう。

(While REB producer and guitarist Massy-san and their friend recording engineer were finishing up the record mastering in the REB studio, me and singer and art-designer Atsumi-san were also working on as well as all sleeplessly. Then she was actually crying for my liner-note writing up, which I’m never be able to forger in my career...)

そして、”They Do, I Do”はAtsumiさんが日本へツアーした時に感じたことを歌ったちょっと日本のソーシャルノームを皮肉った歌だそうです。ロビンはサークルフィールドを作る前の夏にはSummer SonicのステージにRoth Bart Baronたちと立ったそうです。そんな風にサークルフィールドが広がっていくのは彼女たちの音楽らしいな、と我ながらNYCでできた大事な友人仲間としてとても嬉しく思います。

(The song I chose “They Do, I Do” was in fact written about a time when they previously went on Japan tour and played such as one of the biggest music fest in Japan called Summer Sonic shared the stage with Roth Bart Baron and some newcomers, Atsumi felt kinda ironical Japan’s social norm. However, their ‘circlefield’ has been spreading and literally circling moreover since then in which I’m so happy for them so as of them my greater friends and fellows in music world.)

私は２０１５年１月にBowerly Electricというベニューで対バンさせていただいて以来Brown Rice Familyの大ファンであります。その後もBlue Note New YorkやBrooklyn Bowl、Japan Dayなど、ライブに足を運んでは毎回ハッピーにさせてもらっております。今回選曲させていただいた「Brown Rice Radio Station」を始め「Latin goes ska」「Do what you wanna do say what you wanna say」などBrown Rice Familyの楽曲はどれも「踊らずにはいられない。」「体が自然と動き出してしまう。」曲ばかりです。

(I’ve been a huge fan of BRF since I played a show with them for the first time at Bowerly Electric back in January, 2015. Since then I’ve seen them many times at such as Blue Note NY, Brooklyn Bowl, or Japan Day, every time I see them live I get so much happier than ever in live music experience. From my selected tune “Brown Rice Radio Station” at this time to “Latin goes ska,” “Do what you wanna do, say what you wanna say” etc, their songs are all “unpredictably must dance with” -or- “can’t just stand up without dancing” tunes as you realize!)

今回選曲させていただいた「Brown Rice Radio Station」に関しては楽曲はもちろんのこと、ミュージックビデオも逸品です。「天気のいい日曜午後２時くらいにビール片手にまったり聴きたい。」そんな曲です。

Ava Lunaのメンバーとはもう長く、ドラムのジュリアンの出身地がボストンの隣町で僕がボストン時代初期にホームステイしていた町だったり、放送でも話しましたが、彼の昔のバンドのQuilty (＊クウィルティは現在はSpeedy OrtizやソロプロジェクトSad13のフロントウーマンのSadieとの大昔のバンド）で彼らと出逢ってから、その後ジュリアンがブルックリンでこのアヴァルナに加入して2011年ごろにToro Y MoiやUnknown Mortal Orchestraとのツアーショウのボストン場所@Paradise Rock Clubで初めてライヴを観てこのサーヴィスEPとその一作前のアルバム"3rd Avenue Island"のコンボ12インチヴァイナルレコードを物販で手にしてサインして貰って以来の仲です。超長い（笑）

(It’s been a quit long since I first met with Ava Luna. Drummer Julian is originally from Newton a town next to Boston where I was also living with an American family  first moved in the city, so familiar! And when I first met him, he was in another band Quilty (with Sadie, currently the front woman of Speedy Ortiz and Sad 13), and later he joined Ava Luna and I saw their live for the first time was at Paradise Rock Club in Bos toured with Toro Y Moi & Unknown Mortal Orchestra in 2011? Then I got thier first 12″ vinyl of the “Service EP” and “3rd Av Island” combo record and asked them autographed it! haha.)

彼ら自身もバンドとしてもここのアーティストとしてもキャリアはとても長く、最初期は"Ava"という名義でメインボーカルのカルロスのソロプロジェクトだったんじゃないかな？その当時はジュリアンのプライベートとインディレーベルCooling Pie RecordsからCD-Rでアルバムを2枚くらい出してAva Lunaに改名し、メンバーも流動し、当時のメンバーの ナーサンが日本好きだったりってことで日本絡みのタイトルの新作が出てたり（笑）と、小ネタが満載なのですが。音楽的には、海外レビューでは最早「最新型R&B」なんて揶揄されているくらい、放送でも話した通り超多彩でミクスチュアルなサウンドと昨今のライブではそのサイケデリックなアプローチが魅力です！

(I think their artistic careers are quit long, and I also guess Ava Luna firstly started as singer Carlos’s solo project as “Ava”? Then, Julian had his own DIY record label Cooling Pie Records putting CDr stuff mostly and Ava/Ava Luna put out more than 2 early recording albums? そして最後に、アヴァルナの日本のレーベルさんTugboat Recordsも素敵な世界中のアーティストを抱えてて、その中でもBaths（バース）という上記ロビンとの出会いでお話しした私に親友がバースの幼馴染だったりで彼に初来日公演でお仕事したり私も当時インタビューさせてもらったりで、お世話になっているレーベルさんなのでアヴァルナも是非来日させてほしい！とずっとメンバーと話してるんですが。いつか実現出来る時には是非ともツアーマネジャー希望します！（笑）それぐらい大好きな長い付き合いのブルックリンの友達のバンドです。最近、全然会えてないのが残念。

(Lastly here, so Ava Luna has debuted their Japanese edition CD records with their latest two albums out on Tugboat Records in Tokyo, whom is having awesome artists around the world such as LA’s Baths or Brooklyn’s Computer Magic, etc. And since my best friend, whom I mentioned of Robin’s Egg Blue’s description above is a childhood friend of Baths, we’ve worked for Tugboat before, however, they haven’t brought Ava Luna yet, which we’ve been dying to hope them to! haha. Well, that’s one example of our good relationship between me and Ava Luna but I’m a lil sad since I haven’t seen them much for a long lately!)

J.S. Oncaと私の出会いは２０１４年秋の��と。私がリーダーを務めるジャズカルテット「Yusuke Seki Quartet」のマンスリーライブが一本決まり、「もう一本マンスリーライブができる場所はないだろうか。」とニューヨーク中のライブをやっているバー、レストランなどを営業回りしていたところ、West4ストリートの老舗の楽器店「Music inn World instrumental」の入り口に毎週水曜日に開催しているオープンマイクの告知用フライヤーを見つけたのです。私はその場で『オープンマイクをやっている。＝ライブができるスペースがある。』と考え、お店の扉を開けて、その場にいたメガネをかけた不思議な雰囲気の店員さん（ラモス）に話をいたしました。冷たくあしらわれて終わりだろう。という私の予想を裏切り拍子抜けするほど話はトントン拍子に進みその場でマンスリーライブが決定いたしました。そんなマンスリーライブのマネージメントをしてくれることになったのがこのお店で働いていたギターリペアマン、J.S.Oncaだったのです。

(Back in Fall 2014 I met J.S. Onca very randomly. When my leader band “Yusuke Seki Quartet” first got a monthly gig, we wanted one more monthly gig and were looking around bars or restaurants in NYC then found a flyer about Open Mic Wednesdays at legendary shop “Music Inn World Instrumental” in the entrance. I slightly thought they have a live space so asked one of the clerks Ramos then but also thought they don’t much care about me as stranger. However, our monthly gig there got set up by the live booking manger who was him J.S. Onca. And he’s also a guitar tech man there!)

J.S.Oncaはハワイ生まれ、ニューヨーク州ロングアイランド育ち。高校卒業後、音楽大学に進んだ彼はジャズギターを専攻。卒業後ロックやHip Hopなど様々なジャンルの音楽を経て中央アジアからアラブ、アフリカにかけての国々の民族音楽へとたどり着きます。今現在はシタール奏者としても活動しており「Song Bird」からはそんな彼が歩んで来た「音楽の旅路」を垣間見ることができるのではないかと思います。

(J.S. Onca was born in Hawaii and raised in Long island in NY state. After he graduated high school, he went to a music college to majoring jazz guitar. After college, he played through Rock or Hip Hop or many other genres, ended up musical essences through Central Asia to Arab to Africa world music to play more. Nowadays he’s also a Sitar player so that his song “Songbird” feels really that his roots he walked through in his musical journey which you literally can see through, I’m pretty sure.)
