Jake Gyllenhaal - I feel like there are videos of him dancing somewhere and I think I remember him being good at it??

Jeff Bauman - I mean...

Quentin Beck - He’s a theatre kid, come on, he’s all about the theatrics, he’s 100% an amazing dancer

Adam Bell-Claire - Lol he’s known for awkward dancing

Anthony Bell-Claire - He probably took some dancing lessons as a kid bc of his theatre love I’d say tbh

Louis Bloom - Surprisingly good dancer, you wouldn’t think it looking at him and it’s rare to see it but he’s surprisingly good at it

Jerry Brinson - Best dad dancing the world has ever seen

Tommy Cahill - I mean he’s not good but he’s not bad either??? He’s just living his life and no one’s opposed to his dancing

Donnie Darko - Surprisingly good but it takes a lot to get him up and dancing so it’s rare to see

Robert Graysmith - My man Robert’s got moves and he’s not afraid to show them

Billy Hope - Again, not good, not bad, just average guy having a good time

David Jordan - He’ll only ever dance to S Club 7, One Direction and MIKA so I think that tells you enough

David Loki - No one knows. No one has lived to tell the tale of Loki’s dancing

Davis Mitchell - We all know about Davis’ dancing - that man deserves a prize for it wow he’s good

Jamie Randall - Jamie’s above average but doesn’t tend to dance often

Edward Sheffield-Hastings - Looks like a dying seal when he tries to dance

Tony Sheffield-Hastings - Dancing skills (or lack thereof) run in the family apparently

Colter Stevens - Just an average guy who’s happy to bop with anyone tbh

Jack Twist - Legend. What a dancer. Yes. We love Jack and his dancing

Morf Vandewalt - Actually shit. Surprisngly shit. Also doesn’t really care

MMM, so, let’s start with a few choice quotes about Holy Man, one of my favourite Jeff Goldblum movies.

“"Holy Man" is a love story about two people with no apparent chemistry, whose lives are changed by a stranger who remains an uninteresting enigma.” - Roger Ebert.

“The movie was a critical and commercial failure.” - Wikipedia’s intro paragraph.

“[a] horrendous movie” - Eddie Murphy.

“It wasn’t that bad, but it was pretty bad.” - Eddie Murphy. 

Now, with all that borne in mind, let’s move onto the fact that I loved it.

Listen.

Is this movie very, very stupid? Oh, God, yeah. Ricky Hayman (Jeff Goldblum), a failing director of a studio for TV Shopping Channels, and his new manager, Kate Newell (Kelly Preston) find this fucking like, guru type on the side of the road, named “G” (Eddie Murphy). They take G home, like anybody would, and Ricky puts him to work on the channels, where he miraculously sells a lot of garbage just by being really chill.

It’s pretty much a movie about YouTubers as cultural influencers about 15 years before that became a real thing. 90% of Holy Man is stupid appearances from real TV shopping “stars”, and like... It’s dumb. The script is ridiculous, the concepts are more so, but like... It’s a feel-good movie. I watched it and I was genuinely entertained and laughing throughout the whole thing, and I’m normally not a fan of Murphy at all. 

Ricky, as Goldblum’s characters ever are, is flirting with everybody else in any given scene, including G, and there’s a glorious scene where he shows up on Newell’s doorstep in a wet, gold t-shirt, and they kiss in the rain. It’s stupid, but I loved it.

Also, this is so low-definition but this is one of my favourite scenes in the film, least of all because Goldblum is in his boxers like that for like, ten minutes. G has just slept overnight in Ricky’s apartment, and has made for him some juice to drink in the morning. 

Watch this movie. I really enjoyed it, and it’s surprisingly wholesome for such a big piece of trash.

Jeff’s character is the protagonist in this movie, so he’s present throughout, and we see the majority of the narrative through his eyes. Ricky, in my opinion, is a very likable character - he’s sneaky and he’s a bit of a bastard, but he’s also a pretty fun guy, and I really loved him the whole way through.

Goldblum’s Goldblumness:                                80/100

This isn’t the most Goldblum-y of Goldblums, but he’s pretty up there. The hand movements are pretty underplayed, but we see all the usual verbal tics, and he’s putting his own spin on everything.

Goldblum’s Sex Appeal:                                     100/100

Goldblum has some... Pretty great scenes in this. There’s the scene where he’s kissing Preston in the pouring rain, complete with soaking wet t-shirt; he conducts a lot of conversations with Murphy’s character in just his boxers and a robe; and - it isn’t my thing, but it might be yours - there is a scene where he’s just massaging some women’s feet. 

He also flirts with everybody in sight, and I dig it. Holy Man is top-notch for Goldblum’s sex appeal.

And that’s it - that’s Holy Man. You should watch it. Please watch it. I feel so alone, having watched it. It’s even on YouTube! What more do you want?

Hc reader is a big procrastinator and Jake has to bribe her to write papers, finish projects, etc. She literally does everything at the last minute but has the highest grades in the group and everyone is so confused as to how she manages to have such good grades when she starts the assignments/projects/etc. like the night or a few hours before it's due

okay this is the sweetest, loveliest thing ever just like Jake consistently on their arse about doing their work and it gets to the point where he’s like sitting her down in front of his desk at his house making sure that she actually starts doing work y’know???

And all the others are just SUPER bitter about her getting good grades having left all the work to last minute and it’s so funny bc she’s like “It’s chill, I’ll give you all cramming tips when you need them”

It's stormy over there and it's extremely hot in my place... So I was wondering, who likes what type of weather? And what about reader herself?

Basing reader off of me whos about to cry she fucking hates storms I don’t give a shit what the rest of you say and also everyone likes the snow right???? But she also really likes rain just not to the point of thunder and lightning, right??

Jake Gyllenhaal - He’s a warm weather guy I think

Jeff Bauman - I reckon that Jeff’s like kinda warm sunny weather more than wet and windy y’know??

Quentin Beck - I think Q’d love storms, like I can just imagine him in the middle of the night sat up doing revision bc he always revises best when there’s a storm going on, it relaxes him

Adam Bell-Claire - I think he likes a lil bit of rain but not much

Anthony Bell-Claire - He probs likes storms

Louis Bloom - I think he hates cold weather, I think he fucking loves the sun and warm weather

Does each roommates group have their own house rules? Like Jake and the Davids will have a different set of house rule than Donnie and Louis? Robert/Ennis and Colter/Jeff are probably quite relaxed about theirs? Jamie and Edward have rules that mostly apply to Jamie? Morf & Quentin's house rules are just down right ridiculous and petty?

lol I wrote up house rules for some of them so this is the first part of the JGCU House Rules, I’ll do the rest of them some other time on a different post if someone requests haha

Loki, David and Jake

1) Family dinner at least once a week, taking turns cooking

2) Loki can’t only eat bakery food every day and must have at least one real meal per day

3) David has to tell us when he has a panic attack and say if he feels anxious so that we can help

4) Jake has to update us regularly on the Y/N situation Jake and Y/N must not have sex during the day

5) David and Loki have to get at least some sleep every night (I’ll know!)

6) Loki needs to stop threatening Lou’s life

7) Loki and David need to stop consuming unhealthy amounts of coffee

8) Jake needs to stop hiding the coffee

9) Jamie needs to stop bringing his one night stands here “just because it’s closer”

Morf and Quentin

1) Morf is no longer allowed to talk to girls that Quentin likes as he will criticise her clothes

2) Quentin has to stop telling said girls that Morf has “issues”

3) Morf has to stop making decorative changes to Quentin’s room

5) Jamie needs to take his one nights stands to Jamie’s room rather than Quentin’s

3) Jamie must stop watching Bake Off the day before Edward when Edward has a late lecture that night so that he can use it as blackmail

4) Jamie must get rid of his own one-night stands before going to lectures

5) Jamie must close the door when he is with a one night stand

6) Jamie must never take his one night stand into Edward’s room “for a change of scenery”

7) Jamie is limited to playing the Avenger’s theme when he walks into a room to ten times a week

8) Jamie must stop telling the neighbours it’s Edward who watches High School Musical at full volume at three in the morning

10) Edward must stop making rules or Jamie won’t help next time Edward looses his key

Donnie and Louis

1) Donnie needs to stop introducing Lou as a “creepy coyote-type thing”

3) Lou needs to stop watching serial killer documentaries at two in the morning and instead watch more romcoms

4) Lou needs to stop talking to Jamie’s one night stands

5) Lou needs to stop following Loki to his classes and just face that Loki doesn’t like him

6) Donnie and Robert need to stop making Lou watch Disney films as “a hangover cure”

7) Lou needs to start drinking on nights out

8) Donnie needs to stop offering Jack Lou’s bed to sleep in

Halloween’s coming up, so could we get some Halloween headcanons? I feel like Donnie is either A. Super hyped for it or B. Really jittery and nervous because of it

ye so these are just donnie halloween hc bc I’m too tired to think of more than just donnie rn hope this is okay

but on Halloween, none of them know what Donnie’s mind is seeing vs what they’re seeing if you know what I’m saying

so yeah I think it massively depends on what kinda day he’s having

sometimes he’s just LIVING for Halloween 

bc I mean food, costumes and scary films, right?

Other times it’s his literal worst nightmare

and it’s not just the Actual Night it’s the lead up as well

so he and the rest of them have to massively play it by ear

somedays he’ll be really up for going to a Halloween themed party, doing joint costumes with friends and all that fun shit

whereas other days he just really needs to kinda curl up and watch something to distract himself from his chemical imbalance and book another therapy appointment

Final request from me, this time re: Loki & Donnie’s workouts. They get used to seeing each other at night and one night one of them doesn’t show up, the other goes looking for them to see what’s up, bonus if they do it while trying to not let anyone else know how they know something’s up.

Okay this is a thing that I love alright so let’s write some shit half-asleep headcannons that I’ll apologise for in the morning 😂

So like Loki knows for FACTS that Donnie works out at least every other night, right??

So when Donnie doesn’t turn up for a couple of days Loki starts to get just a bit worried bc the lil Fresher’s beginning to grow on him

Not that he’d ever admit it

So after like five days of Donnie not being at the gym he starts asking around

Poses the question to Jake and David casually to begin with, mentioning that Donnie hadn’t been around much recently but both of the roommates kinda just shrug it off

When Y/N is next over Loki asks her bc he knows she’s close with Donnie but she’s been holed up in the library so has seen no one, not just not seeing Donnie

So next person Loki goes to is, logically enough, Robert as he knows how close the two of them are

But when he gets to Roberts accommodation Ennis and Jack are there and tell him Robert had to rush home for some family emergency

So Loki’s kinda going out of his mind, he REALLY doesn’t want people thinking (knowing) that he gives a shit about Donnie

But he wants to know his friend’s o k a y

He finally figures he ought to just go to donnies place

Turns out it’s just that Donnie has been ill, hence his absence everywhere

But Lou fully finds out about Loki being so worried about Donnie and 100% uses it as blackmail

Donnies secretly really touched but would never admit it

Hc reader and Loki are bff's b/c of all the baking they do together (and she bribed him w/baked goods) and the 2 of them are hella good at pranking everyone else but are never caught

Bro I’m legit so here for the friendship between reader and Loki and it would like 100% come from her teaching (or trying to) him how to bake and the two of them like being up at midnight and deciding to make cookies together or smth 😂 but I also have a personal hc of Loki and Billy being really close (imma try and expand on that in today’s write fest piece but we’ll see) and so I could so see him joining that duo and the three of them just causing chaos but getting away with it bc no one else thinks it’s them 😂

To give y’all some ideas if you need them I want to expand more on a couple of things:

Heya sorry this took me so long to reply to, got caught up with shit on my other blog and then I was planning a sleepover so I saved it for that!!

Anyway this is such a good concept bc can you imagine the utter chaos that is Mortin completely contrasted with the soft normality of Jake and Reader?? Like I just picture them at a restaurant together with Jake and Reader just like eating quietly and talking amongst themselves while Mortin are just fucking screaming and laughing and there are a couple of just disasters by them and ugh yeah I’m here for this

Also, let’s consider Quentin deciding that Derek needed to be taken for a walk (bc he’s a fuckin dumbass like that let’s be real) and insisting Morf comes along and then the invite gets extended to Jake and Reader who just regard it with so much dread and wholly want to reject it but can’t think of how and holy fuck now they’ve got to go along with it??? What the fuck???

Anyway yeah I’m totally here for Mortin and Jake and Reader double dates 😂

I'd like to put in a request for Jake, Quentin and Anthony fighting over the lead role in the upcoming (maybe musical) uni play. Jake desparately wants reader to be able to see his performance. This eventually escalates when Morf (who works on costumes) and Edward (screen writing) back Quentin. Everyone, either to supports their friend or out of spite, joins the debate.

“Dude,” David sighed, looking at him over his medicine text book.

“No - come on, Dave, I’m begging you!” Jake said.

“Then beg,” Loki mused, not looking up from his own books.

“You’re too sadistic to want to be a detective you know,” Jake mentioned, rolling his eyes at his roommate who looked up and raised his eyebrows at him.

“You’re right. That’s really working to convince me,” Loki deadpanned.

“Okay, whatever, but come on, you’ve gotta be on my side,” Jake pleaded.

“Why?” David groaned. “Can’t we just... not be involved?”

“Because Morf and Edward are fucking backing Q - though I’m fairly sure Q bribed Edward and Morf just did it to piss off Anthony and me - and obviously Adam will back his brother because that’s what they do, and Jeff backed Anthony as well so I need you guys otherwise I’m completely out of the running,” he explained.

“Why are you so desperate for the main? You’ve never minded being the... co-main?” David offered, unsure about his terminology.

“Yeah, well Y/N said she’d come and I want her to see me being the main,” Jake explained.

“Y/N won’t mind - you’re still gonna have a big part, dude,” Loki sighed, tossing his notes down to look at Jake.

“Yeah but... it’s not the same, right?” Jake pointed out.

“Surely Edward knows who’s best for the main?” David asked gently. Jake glared at him. “I just mean because he wrote it, you know?”

“Will you back me or not?” David and Loki exchanged a look before sighing heavily.

“Fine.”

Concept: campus festival/event/fair that requires people to be put in groups. Each group is given a booth or a small area to organize something that can make profits (serving food, art & craft, a kissing booth until school faculty takes that shit down, etc.) Huge chance for reader and Jake to interact.

okay but like, it’s exclusively something the uni puts together for 1st years to do - it’s like in the first term they always get the freshers to put together a charity fair. Pretty much everyone gets involved and reader ends up in a group with Robert, Donnie, Louis and Jack along with some other people they’re mutually all friends with

Jake ofc uses his friendship with the dudes to visit their stall CONTINUOUSLY waiting for a moment where reader’s manning it alone to go and talk to her while his *cough* wingmen (i.e. Jamie, Edward, Quentin, Robert and David) encourage from the sidelines and his, uh, friends (i.e. Donnie, Morf, Loki, Jack and Louis) are pissing themselves laughing, watching him hopelessly attempting to flirt

Honestly I think it would genuinely just be so organic that there was never just a point where they started dating like it was just kinda before and after kinda thing where one day they were friends and the next they were kinda maybe dating??? But they go official when Morf starts flirting with someone else and Q is so upset bc he’s like “I THOUGHT WE WERE TOGETHER” which then makes Morf be like “WELL LETS FUCKING GO OFFICIAL THEN”
