The complete lack of a black protagonist in Life is Strange is disappointing

We've got 5 games and not a single game has gotten a single black protagonist.

I do love the series, but even I can see  a problem. A complete lack of black characters in the franchise.

None of the main characters are black. None of the secondary characters are black and the only black characters they have are side characters or background characters.

Like there was no reason whatsoever why Rachel, Warren, Kate, Steph, Ryan, Cassidy, Finn, Jacob, Sarah Lee or Chris couldn't have been black. Hell, there is no reason why Max, Chloe or Rachel couldn’t have been black.(although personally I would've loved it if Rachel was Indigenous)

And the black characters we do have is really bad in terms of representation.

Wells, a drunk and crooked  principal.

Hayden, a stoner and member of the Vortex Club

Drew North, a bully jock who got in the drug trade

Charlotte, a likable character, but who's anger is consuming her and blaming others around her, tho I understand where she is coming from, but her characterization tends to be reminiscent of the unfortunate angry black woman stereotype. And just so happens to own a pot shop...

Ms Grant, Mikey, Penny, and Joey the Nurse seem to be the only positive black characters in the series.

And we still have not gotten a single black protagonist in the franchise.

I find it weird that we seemingly have little good black representation that isn't just associated with drugs.

Like I’m not trying to say DONTNOD, D9 or Square Enix are racist or anything, but I’m saying they need to do better when it comes to representation. 

We were robbed of a black main character for Life Is Strange and are instead getting a cash grab sequel with Max who might as well be a completely new character seeing as how they’re throwing away everything that Max experienced and learned and everything we loved from LIS 1 to make it.

But considering how the fandom treated Sean and Daniel and their story, I can only imagine the disgusting hate a black protagonist would get in an extremely white franchise.

Unlife is Strange: Chapter 23 is up “Help From a Friend”

It's me. Hi (I'm the problem, it's me). It’s been a while, but I wanted to wrap up my current arc of Love's Sacrifices before I get back to this story.

This chapter isn't going to be action oriented or anything, with the last three chapters being a three part battle sequence. I think the story could have used a breather after that. We'll be picking up where we last left off, with Max meeting Sean.

We do get some character interactions I've been wanting to get to for a while so there's that. I'm also announcing a spinoff for this fic; Screaming Until Dawn - of course, a crossover between Scream and Until Dawn; the events of that story get a passing mention in this chapter.

Content warning: This chapter contains mild vampire related violence. I say mild because the worse will be left to the imagination. The next chapter is partially written; may be more brutal in the violence department and will also feature our favorite teacher.

What little I watched of ZEXAL makes my Best Wishes comparison very appropriate, it is certainly a base breaker.

While I do not dislike the show like I used to, I can't say I like it either, but it is fun, if you manage to stop your questions.

ZEXAL's actual problem seems to be its inability to fully execute its own good ideas (to paraphrase Frustrated Jacob's complaints over Roxas prologue in KH2), and not going full ham with classic animé references.

Imagine, for example, Numbers Club being like a full-on sentai gang, but Tadashi being the 90s Hackerman. There is so much you can do with chararacters' somewhat developed archetypes, but show doesn't go full ham with any of them, besides Shark.

Shark, however, is great, and is very developed. He is clearly not just Yoshida's favourite, but also other writers'.

ZEXAL also have TONS of references to older YGO shows, but I'm not entirely sure if they are charming, or annoying. It certainly explains where ARC-V got several of its ideas (Kaito does the Waga Tamashi thing as Jack/Reiji, resonating interdimensional Dragons etc.), but ZEXAL is like the cool, charismatic kid with lots of talents, but no coherent thought, whereas ARC-V is like the edgy theatre kid that cries during Moulin Rouge.

Another issue is of course ZEXAL's fanbase, which is focused on that one thing. You know the one.

There are also tons of structural issues with ZEXAL, but those I already discussed some of those before. Yuma being a novice, or very cavalier is not an issue, you may personally like it (early ZEXAL II executes this pretty decently), but it is just his decently written flaw. It just becomes annoying with everything else, but even then that is only a issue for the first part (since the second part gives decent screentime for Shark, and Kaito, with some of the characters having decent moments).

Despite its obvious structural issues, I have to acknowledge ZEXAL for discombobulating like ARC-V, and VRAINS did, though ZEXAL very famously almost did (check the original ending synopses).
