Moore has found an investor. They're both on him today, idle in a van that is yellow with the smell of fastfood, and Jacobi is sharp and cold and impatient.

"Can we kill him now?" he asks. Kepler doesn't even glance at him, hunting dog alert with one headphone over his ear. The screen in front of him shows Moore, chatting amicably with yet another suited man in yet another boardroom. His ears stick out in a way Jacobis mother would call endearing, and Jacobi would call pretty fucking annoying. 

"No, Mr. Jacobi, we cannot," says Kepler. " We are to monitor until either I, or Mr. Cutter, give the order."

The vans sides read ISSACS FLORALS in big, cheerful letters. Jacobi had snickered when they got it. He does not feel like snickering now. It has been an extraordinarily long two weeks.

"Are you sure?" he whines, drawing out the 'sure' like a child. Kepler cuts his eyes over at him, then back to the camera. 

"I just feel like killing him is the answer, sir. To this logic puzzle. You know,” he gestures at the feed, “ if two business men are on trains, and one train is going to Dallas at 60 miles an hour and one train is going to Plano at 80 miles an hour, blow them up before more math happens."

"Jacobi," says Kepler. "You graduated MIT with honors. I assume you know how to do math?"

"No sir. I make bombs by feel. Measure with my heart."

"I see."

He pauses.

"Mr Jacobi, did I ever tell you about the events of the fall of 1963?"

Jacobi sighs.

"No sir," he says, "you have not"

...

Two hours later Jacobi has his head in his hands. Kepler is finishing up.

"And that's why," he drawls, in his bullshit southern not southern accent that he probably puts on to fuck with Jacobi, specifically, "I can never go back to Dallas."

Jacobi looks up at him, blearily. 

"Sir."

"Yes, Mr Jacobi?"

"You know I respect you."

Kepler smiles a big, white, meet the parents smile. "Of course, Mr Jacobi."

"You know, if you gave the order, I would lay down my life."

The smile does not fade. It somehow grows a few, cheerful, centimeters.

"Of course, Mr. Jacobi"

"There is no way," Jacobi closes his eyes. Kepler hasn't broken eye contact. 

"There is no way, " he says again, "That you were responsible for the death of John F. Kennedy."

"Of course not," says Kepler, in the jolly, knowing voice of a mall santa facing off with a cynical child. "I was never there." He has the audacity to wink. It's an upsettingly good one. 

Jacobi sighs, again. His sighing musculature is getting a real workout. If he was still religious he'd curse god.

"Okay sir."

The grin recides from 'Cheshire' to 'tooth replacement salesman'.

"As you were, Mr Jacobi. Hours to go before we sleep!"

He turns back to the feed. Moore is picking disinterestedly at a fruit platter, while a bespeckled man looks on.

Jacobi sighs. Again.

Looking at Atlantic Station 25 years after the EPA analysis that gave it life

Since Atlantic Station has a 300-unit AMLI apartment tower under construction, let's review a bit of its history.

25 years ago, Jacoby Development undertook the redevelopment of a 138-acre steel plant called Atlantic Steel (founded in 1901 as Atlanta Hoop Company to make cotton bale ties & barrel hoops, it grew into Atlantic Steel Company which lasted from 1915 till 1998).

In addition to needing Brownfield pollution remediation, the site needed an essential transportation ingredient -- better connectivity to Midtown by way of a new 17th Street bridge over the interstate.

But there was a problem: because Atlanta didn't meet federal Clean Air Act standards for air pollution between 1998 and 2002, according to EPA regulations, federal money couldn't be used to build the bridge. Which left the Atlantic Station project dead in the water. It was bridge or bust.

But Jacoby found a work around. They could bypass the EPA ban if they could prove that the redevelopment qualified this was a project that provided clean air benefits.

So throughout 1999, the EPA analyzed the expected air quality benefit for this project, compared to an equivalent one built elsewhere. Their analysis showed that it would produce significantly less air pollution if built here rather than elsewhere due to the transit access (including free shuttle service to Arts Center MARTA) and walkability. It worked -- the bridge was funded, and the cleanup work for the development commenced.

Approximately $167 million of the $250 million needed for the Brownfield cleanup, plus site preparation and infrastructure, was provided by a Tax Allocation District (TAD). Atlantic Station opened in 2005.

Notably, the EPA documents from 1999 mentioned that the shuttle service should at some point "switch to a fixed transit system (e.g. light rail)" which "should connect with a more extensive transit network that could serve much of the area west of 1-753-85 and possibly provide a connection to Cobb County...the 17th Street Bridge would be designed such that it can accommodate future rail, potentially connecting to the MARTA Arts Center Station."

25 years later, we still have no plans for rail. Maybe in another 25?

The film played so much on HBO that the acronym was jokingly referred to as, “Hey, Beastmaster’s On!” This film has it all: bat people, killer ferrets, black-dyed tigers, and much more. Casting choices that didn’t make the cut? Demi Moore as Kiri (played by Tanya Roberts) and Klaus Kinksi as Maax (played by Rip Torn). Could this be Jeff Mohr’s new favorite Eighties film? You’ll have to listen to find out.
