THREE: WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR?
How cheesy is it if I say family? Because, you know, it’s family. It’s my parents, it’s my sisters, it’s my daughter-- I wouldn’t be a quarter of the man I am without them. Sometimes I get hit with that feeling of, like... “I can’t believe this is my life”. You know? I can’t believe I have people who love me like that! Jesus. I’m lucky. Friends fall under this category, too, of course-- I’ll big brother anyone. I think it’s ingrained in me at this point.
Sappy answer aside, I’m really fucking grateful for cup ramen and bread. Oh my God. I hate being that cliché doctor with the hypocrisy of not eating well, but-- man, when you don’t have time to eat, that stuff is life-saving. No shit!
SIX: WHAT’S YOUR BEST CHILDHOOD MEMORY?
Janet Jackson. Oh, man, I remember Janet Jackson like... that was my first concert. September 18, 1998, Boston. I was, uh, eighteen-- my sisters were babies, and Ma and Pa weren’t gonna let me bring them, but I snuck ‘em out anyway. Do you know how much I wore my Janet tapes out? I wasn’t gonna miss the opportunity! I saved so much money from my summer job to afford three tickets, and my best friend in senior year-- this incredible boxer, his name was Ray, I haven’t talked to him in years-- came with us. I drove his car.
My baby sister, like the baby baby, had to pee on the way, and I remember having to buy a burger at the McDonald‘s so she could use the bathroom... and she pointed to this lady with a nose ring and said, in the loudest voice, “WHAT IS THAT?”
If eighteen doesn’t count as “childhood”, though, I really liked walking around the mall carrying the baby when I was, like... I dunno, a pre-teen or something. Franny was barely out of toddler age, but she’d hold my hand and we’d go to the arcade and pretend to drive the race car games there... there was this prize monkey that I never got to win, but our youngest really loved looking at it for some reason. You never really know what goes in a baby’s head, but I loved making her laugh.
I love making my sisters laugh...
TEN: WHAT WAS THE LAST THING TO MAKE YOU SMILE?
My daughter farted and said, “Ewww, papá! Disgusting!”
And she’s right. I am.
FOURTEEN: WHAT KIND OF PERSON ARE YOU?
This... what? What kind of question is this?
Ah, I don’t know. Kind of regular. I wanna say I’m a dad, but that’s not all there is? It’s a lot of what makes me up, but only because it’s a full-time duty. I’m a son, I’m a brother. I’m the coolest guy you’ll ever meet, and I’ve gotten nosebleeds from running into doors more than once in the past year alone...
Probably if you opened me up you’d find Dr. Pepper, cup ramen, and the pathetic attempts at healthy shakes I’ve been trying to drink in the morning. Add back problems and a mildly concerning obsession with Nicolas Cage’s filmography and I guess you get me.
I’m trying to get over a coffee addiction. (It’s not going weeeeeell!)
THIRTY-FIVE: WHOM DO YOU CURRENTLY FEEL CLOSEST TO?
I mean... it’s Franny, isn’t it? Mi patita. If I didn’t look so old and wrinkly and on the verge of death you’d think we were twins, probably, we’re that much in sync. Her being younger means I’ve been in her life basically for as long as she’s had the ability to process object permanence-- meanwhile, I was severely depressed before Ma and Pa adopted her, so I figure I only really started “living” when she came home, you know?
We’ve been through a lot. Not to discount my relationship with our baby sister, of course, but... the smaller age gap made Franny easier to talk to growing up (not to mention easier to share my tapes with). We’ve been inseparable ever since (ignoring the physical distance we had the past couple of years! That doesn’t count now! Shut up!).
