★ 059 // “BORN TO SPIN” (Reference below the cut!)
#jjba#jojo's bizarre adventure#steel ball run#johnny joestar#gyro zeppeli#gyjo#offerings#tools used:#clip studio paint#Once again having a meme/ref folder is coming in clutch. This idea came to me yesterday!!#If you're able to translate the Japanese I give you a little clap.#I changed the numbers to be a specific reference to something shared between these two. Whoever knows what it is gets a BIG clap.#I had a very brief moment when starting this where I asked myself “should I make them animals like in the ref?”#Which to me was the dumbest question I've asked myself in a while. OF COURSE. MAKE THEM SILLY ANIMALS!!!#They're already so cat and dog coded anyway....

Do you like to use the Mushroom Cloud as a fun Barbieheimer meme? If you do, it's fine so long as you know what the cloud caused and what it symbolizes. If you don't know the circumstances of the mushroom cloud, please search ''Hiroshima Nagasaki atomic bomb people (with your safe search off)' on Google Images. *The images are very disturbing. Please DO NOT try it if you are sensitive to extremely disturbing images.
I'm Japanese. In Japan, unfortunately, many people have never seen the old pictures of the real effects of the mushroom cloud. We learn about the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (both are cities in Japan) in primary school or junior high, when we are about 10-14 years old. Many adults think it's too risky to show children the pictures because it shows human bodies, which look like human charcoal. Living people got severe burns on their faces, their backs, and their whole bodies looked like melting wax (additionally, most of the people in the pictures are citizens, not soldiers. There are many kids, babies, and old people, of course.) Even though it happened in our land, many people (including me, I'm ashamed to say though) don't feel it was an actual event because it seems very unreal and it happened almost 80 years ago. Fortunately, I had a chance to learn about the atomic bombing and see several pictures of it. Now I know what happened in 1945. I think some people here/outside of Japan realize it as well.
I don't blame people born outside of Japan who have never known/learned about the effects of the atomic bombing. I want to ask you to learn and understand what happened under that iconic mushroom cloud before you make a meme with it. If you think 'So what?' after that, I will have nothing more to say to you.
I've not seen Barbie or Oppenheimer because they are not released here yet. But I feel they are both very interesting. I'm looking forward to watching them. I wish I could have fun watching them without any distractions before going to the theatres.
Don't get me wrong. I know that during World War II the Japanese government did tons of terrible things to people outside and inside of Japan. I just want people to know that atomic bombing is a very serious issue, and using the images of the mushroom cloud as a meme/design is like using a symbol of the Nazi/KKK as a fun meme. It's not fun. Atomic bombing should never happen anywhere in the world.
#I'm NOT saying it to make Japanese people 'victims' of the memes#I'm afraid that people get used to making jokes about it#or forget how horrible nuclear weapons are#the atomic bomb in 1945 killed 129000-226000 people in total#at least 88% of those were civilians#the total number is uncertain#because in many cases there were no remains to be found

mitsurugi is canonically into posh looseleaf tea making as a hobby. why does everyone make him just drink earl grey, literally the second most basic black tea ever
#like i think one of the writers said he was into black tea not green#earl grey is literally like one of two types of black tea you can buy cheaply in a japanese supermarket#i usually think of english breakfast as the number one most basic. but in japan i think it mightve just been called black tea#anyway literally the point is that he isnt into cheap supermarket teabag tea#and why is it otherwise always herb tea#you know he doesnt actually canonically have anything remotely to do with germany#or is it just me who thinks that if someones a snob about tea it should at least be the type that actually has tea in it#gyakuten saiban

[ It's MY Number: case of kanda masakazu ]

translated some info because I want to
His mbti is INFJ
been called a natural airhead since he was a kid, and imamori maaya (ichikawa sumino's actress) called him so too.
He likes sweets, like custard cream or chocolate.
He's good at solving rubiks cube
His first love was when he was still at 1st year of elementary school.
He loves feminine little things/aesthetics such as make ups, manicure/nail arts, or any aesthetic things with details (//i understand u bro..). He said something pretty/have aesthetics made his heart flutter.
He thinks people who are determined to do what they want to do are attractive.
was a captain of baseball club when he was at junior highschool. He think he was chosen as the captain not because he's good at it,but bcs people think he's someone that won't cause any trouble or fights at the club.
then he joined basketball club around 2-3rd year of highschool.
He's good at darts(//and have a pro license for it? I couldn't catch what he said later ;-;), his older brother works at a darts bar (?) and would invite him sometimes. He thought darts was scary at first.
His hobby is painting and watching movies.
He loves sky
he'd like to go to finland, sweden, or other scandinavia country if he had the opportunity.
He was scouted by some agency when he was around 14, but his parents didn't allow him to accept it, and he obeyed his parents because he didn't have that much courage when he was a kid.
But after he graduated from university at 21, he decided to give it a try one more time and started to looking for acting agencies
When he had a fight with his friends and don't want to go to school/when he had a bad days, he always thought of drama or tv programs he want to watch so he gotta do his best too for tomorrow.
And later he realized from 'someone who watch tv', he wants to become 'someone who acts those drama on tv'

(You can watch it here, totally recommended it bcs look at them looking like a domestic married liontyranno, i mean, masakazu have a lot of good insights here that some parts i can't put into words)

When you get to big numbers, the Japanese counting system starts to differ from English. I am not a numbers person, so when I have numbers in my work, I double check constantly. Usually I use on SLJ FAQ, but today I used Jisho and I found this interesting hiccup.
The second suggestion is fine! 2000万 [にせんまん] does mean 20,000,000. It does NOT, however, mean 平成12年 [へいせいじゅうにねん], or the year 2000. (More about the years thing here.)
To get into it, 万 means 10,000. It's usually read マン or バン, but sometimes it's よろず. We've covered its archaic form 萬, and you probably know the exclamation 万歳 banzai. It literally means eternal life and prosperity, but in practical use, it means "Hooray!," to cheer, or the gesture of throwing one's hands up (in either celebration or defeat... or, you know, on a roller coaster or whatever).
But as a number, it also happens to be where the counting system starts to change. Let me borrow a graphic:

Yuck. Maybe you're saying, "Well, these are big numbers, I'm not gonna encounter them that often," I am very sorry to tell you that the yen is counted in CENTS, so if something costs $10, its price is four figures. And with current exchange rates, 10K comes into play around the $66 mark. So you have to learn the big numbers, even if you hate it! Sorry!
#learning japanese#life in japan#i am so. uncomfortable with numbers#i checked this at least 百万回 and i am SURE there still have to be errors#and i didnt even make the graphic.......#what a nightmare

i don’t really know how to phrase this but does anyone have any tips or resources regarding auditorily parsing names from cultures you’re unfamiliar with? more specifically i (white usamerican) work in an educational setting where a lot of the parents are chinese or indian immigrants which of course means that a lot of the kids have chinese or indian names, and sometimes i’ll get a parent with a really thick accent come up to the front desk and say the name of the kid they’re looking for and i straight up have no idea how to write down or repeat what they said. and im really not trying to spend my entire work day committing microaggressions so i want to get better at comprehending what im hearing when it’s unfamiliar words in a heavy accent, i just don’t know where to start

all i'm saying is, if lando had come up behind oscar with even a sniff of better pace, mcl would've swapped them immediately. i'm talking no hesitation.
oscar's average lap time towards the end of the race was 1:31.4.
lando's in clear air was 1:31.3.
a tenth, that's it. and yet, oscar gets parked behind like it's 2024 all over again.
it's just interesting to me, you know. i love lando, but can we at least stop pretending this “equal treatment” thing is anything but optics at this point? i think i've seen this film before...
anyway. happy birthday oscar, i guess.

I gotta really make more notes and shit before this is a coherent thought but like. I think it's interesting that the tritagonists of Golden Kamuy, that being Asirpa, Sugimoto, and Shiraishi, all have some experience of being dehumanized/unpersoned. Asirpa via her identity as both Ainu and, arguably, an Ainu girl specifically. Sugimoto through the military and the Japanese government's casting aside of veterans. Shiraishi as an inmate within the Japanese prison system since presumably a young age.
#golden kamuy#golden kamuy spoilers#sugimoto saichi#shiraishi yoshitake#asirpa#something something they all have some experience of being on the margins even while Sugimoto and Shiraishi have privileges as Japanese Men#theyre all orphans though both Asirpa and Sugimoto have memories of their families to a degree#I think you could also look at Sugimoto through a lens of disability for a number of reasons namely#the way he and his family were treated bc of tuberculosis. stigma against scars/his clear PTSD#and this isnt gone into in the manga for obv reasons but like. Sugimoto is absolutely going to deal with chronic pain at some point#not selfship
