I just received my copy of the beautiful Swans book, Sacrifice and Transcendence by Nick Soulsby, for which I was interviewed extensively. Swans are one of the most important groups of the last thirty years, and I have had a long friendship with the brilliant and driven Michael Gira. There has been a lot of cross-fertilization between the Swans and the Foetus live bands, with many musicians being members of both, including Norman Westberg, Algis Kizys, Ted Parsons and Vinnie Signorelli, In addition, I started the Wiseblood project with former Swans drummer Roli Mosimann and the Swans song “Jim” from the album My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky is about me. This book looks like a fascinating slice of musical history. You can buy it now at Amazon or wherever good books are sold, as they say!

Foetus “Wash It All Off” b/w “Slog″ (1984)
During piecing together our Omega WUSB TVT / Wax Trax tribute, we culled at least one song released or distributed from the label. It’s why we considered “Wash It All Off” for inclusion until we realized we had seven hours of music to play for a three-hour slot. That’s when we trimmed it down to Al Jourgensen & Friends. Believe me, we could’ve played them all if we had all the time at the station. But now we have the fat that’s the A-side and it feels like the devil himself Jim G. Thirwell (of all things Foetus) is crazily bouncing off the walls and ceiling as he’s struggling to negotiate his existence and a parasitic social dynamic with the other. The original released in 1981 may have utilized the bassline from Delta 5′s “Mind Your Own Business” (’79) but he throws it out from a fifteen-story apartment window and welcomes in a sweaty frantic synthpop mania that’s double speed. “Supercalifragilisticsadomasochism” is what bloody murder he’s screaming about of a tortured relationship he’s haplessly put through and then declares “hit me twice! / hit me again!”. Referencing Mary Poppins (Stevenson, 1964), he also nods Cabaret Voltaire (”why kill time when you can kill yourself”) and Abba of all bands (”gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight”) in a lunatic later version that should’ve sent Foetus to a mental institution. Luckily that didn’t happen, as a New York City residency had him collaborating with the likes of Swans, Lydia Lunch, and Vincent Signorelli of Unsane.
After setting himself on fire, the B-side “Today I Started Slogging Again“ continues that Thirwell nuttiness. It was one of many songs from a triple-cassette industrial / noise gift made for me by a community-college professor; a result from a totally inaccurate record review I wrote for the campus newspaper published before the turn of the millennium.

LIVE FROM NEW YORK! Tess - from that time she hosted SNL - her monologue was really funny. She made a lot of jokes about her latest gallery show, self portrait painting, and a dig or two about art school, finishing with a few about her dad (me) which were slightly embarrassing. I think Scarlet Johansson and Madonna wrestled that night and the band was Miike Snow. She was brilliant in the Brittany Spears sketch and as Sotheby’s Art Auctioneer. Her comments about decolonization were a blast and the Tinder sex predators sketch was funny but sadly true. The evening was capped off by Jim Signorelli’s return with a hilarious commercial parody for the Gagosian Gallery with Tess dressed in white as the gallery guide. All in all an amazing night! #snl #gagosian #madonna (at NBC Studios At the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cho0rWXuxEt/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Zurich introduces new CEO for commercial insurance This week has already been an eventful one for senior leadership moves and today Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich) has revealed that Sierra Signorelli has been appointed both CEO for commercial insurance and as a member of the executive committee with immediate effect. The new appointment to the executive committee is subject to regulatory approval and her successor to her current role as group chief underwriting officer (CUO) will be announced in due course. Signorelli succeeds James Shea, who has decided to leave Zurich to pursue opportunities outside the company. She first joined Zurich in July 2017 and has held several senior leadership positions in the insurance industry in the United States, Asia and Switzerland. In her role as group CUO, Zurich highlighted that she transformed its underwriting function, strengthened its resilience, and enabled the delivery of differentiated services and solutions to customers. Commenting on Signorelli’s appointment, Mario Greco, group CEO, noted Signorelli’s experience and knowledge of the insurance industry and that she is a “proven and passionate” people leader. He said her skillset, understanding of Zurich’s business and culture, and strong customer focus made her the perfect fit for the role and that he is confident she will continue to advance the insurer’s commercial insurance capabilities. “I want to thank Jim for his dedication to Zurich and excellent contributions to our business,” Greco continued. “He has repositioned commercial insurance to achieve sustained profitability and to meet our large corporate customers’ evolving and complex needs. I wish Jim all the success for his future endeavours.” Shea joined Zurich in September 2016 when the group combined its corporate and commercial businesses into a single global business unit. In a Press release, Zurich emphasized how his leadership allowed the business to regain its position as an industry-leading commercial insurer through a focus on underwriting discipline, and investment in skills, tools and capabilities. Sacks: Why Stories Sell; Why We Care In the online world that surrounds us, we are bombarded with messages from morning to night: email, spam, pop-ups, video, print media, text-ads, robo-calls, and even old-fashioned, telephone solicitors. Because messages bombard us from morning to night, only the most sophisticated ads get and hold our attention. At the heart of these winning ads is usually a mythical story. Go to Amazon
Good but .... I've now read two important books on the subject of story-based branding: StoryWars by Jonah Sachs and StoryBranding by Jim Signorelli. Both take different paths but have the same moral: successful brands should draw from the way stories can empower audiences. Go to Amazon
I have spent the better part of my career working as a designer in ... I have spent the better part of my career working as a designer in branding and web design. It wasn't until I opened my own design shop in the last few years that I realized that design by itself was only half the battle—most of my clients needed help crafting an authentic story first and foremost (which could then be supported by great design). Go to Amazon
Great stuff just finished this book. Not just for marketers An opinion Author goes on to attack any organization he doesn't like by criticizing their "story" or their "hero" (the consumer) Your search is over. You've found the answer you're looking for. The Marketing Book I've been waiting for years. Five Stars One of the most entertaining and useful books on storytelling - ever Wonderful book on storytelling Your Brand Is Your Story
