When she left Haymitch’s, the sun was nearly gone, and the sky was a dusky and soft orange. Before she realized what her feet were doing, Katniss found herself at Peeta’s front door. She lifted her hand to knock and hesitated. The pressure was building up behind her eyes again. Katniss should never have even thought of opening her heart to anyone. She had basked in the possibility for just one second, and her heart had been ripped away from her. A bloody red, hiccupping thing. Stolen and pulsing in Snow’s iron grip, waiting until he could finally crush it and end Katniss once and for all. She whipped around and ran back home.

I'd definitely pick a BIG, FLUFFY, EXTREMELY SOFT BLANKET. UGH I WOULD BE SO CONTENT WITH GETTING THAT I'M NOT EVEN KIDDING

The Glacial Basilisk

Did you know? - The glacial basilisk is extremely territorial, defending its chosen lakes fiercely. Large, frequented lakes are highly sought-after real estate, and a basilisk will do whatever it can to maintain control over such a lake. Most of the time, territorial disputes are solved using displays. The basilisk’s large fins are used minorly in swimming but are otherwise tucked into its side. These fins become fully extended and will even rattle in a striking territorial display. The color and size have less to do with deciding the winner than the aggression of the display itself. If neither basilisk withdraws, the dispute can become physical. Basilisks will avoid stinging each other with their spines as it is easy for a basilisk to sting itself in the process. Their counter-venom is limited and resupplies slowly, so neither basilisk wants to risk having to use such a precious resource.

There are some lakes that the basilisks are willing to share, but these are rare cases reserved only for the largest of lakes. These temporary truces can be beneficial to both basilisks as it is much easier to drive off competition with more basilisks defending.

As the temperatures rise toward the height of summer, the glacial basilisk begins its hibernation period. As their lakes begin to thaw, the basilisks retreat to areas that are stuck in a permafrost. During this period, the basilisk is much more willing to temporarily share lakes as its territorial nature wanes. The hibernation period is short, just long enough for the ice to start freezing in their natural habitats again before the basilisks drive each other out of their territories once more.

People still tend to lump JK Rowling in with the category of ~problematic artists~ and I need everyone to understand that is not the problem with her. She is not comparable to anyone who wrote a piece of fiction you hate, or someone who made rude comments in 2015 and has since learned better.

She is far more like Elon Musk. She is a radicalized person with an extreme amount of social and financial power, and for YEARS she has been using that power to try to influence her government into hurting vulnerable people, on purpose. And she has succeeded. THAT is the problem with her, and THAT is why spending money on her books is so dangerous, not because her books aged badly.

Critiquing her work is fine, of course (I personally was never a fan so I really don’t care) but you NEED to understand that fiction is not the main issue here. And I truly think acting like she’s the same as the rest of any giant list of ~problematic creators of the week~ waters down how dangerous she is.

ok im going to #seriouspost for a second here. I don't think Harry Potter is a manifesto. I think it was a flawed passion project that millennials latched onto because of the fantasy of sticking it to their mean teachers and arbitrarily categorizing themselves (hogwarts houses; it's the thinking millennial's astrology). I think the fact that the series got popular when and how it did was very much a product of its time.

I don't think Harry Potter is the biggest symbol of JKR's bigotry. I think the most flagrant sign of that was how she responded to critics. I watched her become radicalized in real time. I watched how she doubled down on her racism when she was called out for the ways she promoted her tragically mid fantastic beasts movies. I watched her chase marginalized teenagers with a double digit follower count off of twitter for daring to criticize her thought process, and no one with any kind of power standing against her because she was the one who was paying them. This isn't to say Harry Potter is without flaws. This is to say she really didn't give a shit about that. Getting rich and powerful is a hell of a drug, and she had enough sycophants that she had no reason to care about what her critics were saying.

She was convinced that she was a martyr; a voice for the unheard; a leader for the ages, so of course her detractors were the bad guys. And I think we should take this to heart. We should see this as an example of how easy it is to get radicalized; if you think of yourself as a paragon of virtue, you are going to think that whatever you see as good and right is an objective fact. Most people don't know this, but the majority of terfs start out as trans allies. You are not immune to propaganda! You are not immune to falling into dangerous ideologies!!!

This is why the most important thing you can do as an activist is to listen. Do NOT think you're above being wrong; do NOT develop a god complex; do NOT form an identity out of being right all the time. Involve yourselves in the groups you claim to speak for. Listen to trans women; share resources that help trans women; familiarize yourself with the diversity of experiences that trans people have and the struggles they face.

No, none of you are as bad as JKR because you don't have her money or her power. You will likely never have the capacity for harm she does. But check yourselves. Do not affirm yourselves into thinking you always have the moral high ground. Watch yourselves; humble yourselves; check yourselves for signs of cult behavior and internalized prejudice. You are always learning. You will always be learning. Do not allow yourselves to get a power trip from brushing off marginalized voices.

There is NO "death of the author" with JK Rowling - she controls and continues to profit from her IP, and uses that money to fund hate groups.
