Kai Parker returns for the 'supernatural Hunger Games' in Legacies first-look photo

“Welcome to the supernatural Hunger Games.”

Kai Parker (Chris Wood) utters that line in Legacies’ upcoming two-parter (starting Feb. 6), which features the return of his delicious Vampire Diaries villain. (And this time he has a beard!)

Kai first appeared in season 6 of The Vampire Diaries, as a member of the Gemini coven so evil they used magic to lock him in a prison dimension with no one to talk to (or harm). But you can’t keep a good villain trapped for long. Not only did Kai return for Vampire Diaries’ final season, but now, nearly two years later, Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Josie Saltzman (Kaylee Bryant) are about to meet their uncle, and EW has the exclusive first look at his return.

“The prison world is inescapable up until now, so it’s not so much how he comes back into our fold as how we enter his,” Legacies showrunner Julie Plec says of Kai entering the picture. “It has a lot to do with Josie and the dabbling she’s been doing with black magic. It’s a consequence of those actions that leads them to the proverbial and literal door of the prison world.”

And seeing as how this week’s episode ended with the twins and Ric trapped in said prison world, it’s only a matter of time before the family members are reunited. However, a typical family reunion this is not. After all, this is the man who tried to kill the twins in utero and did kill their biological mom. According to Plec, the experience of meeting Kai will “rattle” the twins, particularly Josie, who sees him as “a mirror of what could be if she’s not careful.”

And no matter what he says or how he looks, know this: Kai hasn’t changed. As Plec puts it, “He’s forever an irredeemable a—hole… but he’s one of our favorites.”

All The Vampire Diaries and The Originals Easter Eggs in Legacies Season 2

With so many unpredictable twists and such a lovable cast, Legacies is such an enjoyable series even if you were previously unfamiliar with the shared Vampire Diaries universe. But for those of us who did watch the flagship series and its first spin-off The Originals, Legacies is also a treasure trove of Easter eggs and references to our favorite characters and moments from the former CW dramas.

Legacies' first season was filled with nods to our fallen favorites like Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Klaus (Joseph Morgan), the reappearance of memorable items like Caroline's (Candice King) ballgown and reverse kyanite rings, and it built up the mythology of The Merge and nature's loopholes. While that was all fun and good, Season 2 raised the stakes (excuse our pun) with the returns of Freya Mikaelson (Riley Voelkel) and Kai Parker (Chris Wood), plus dozens of cheeky references for Vampire Diaries and Originals fans to pick up on.

As of now, Legacies Season 2 is on hiatus after production shut down amid the coronavirus outbreak, but the show is planning to resume production on the remaining Season 2 episodes later this year. In the meantime, you can check out all The Vampire Diaries and The Originals Easter eggs and references in Legacies Season 2 so far below.

• We still haven't gotten our Caroline Forbes return, but the Season 2 premiere confirmed she was still off living in Europe, searching for a way to help the twins avoid the Merge and getting Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) the help she needed over the summer break.

• Alaric (Matt Davis) dropped the sweet reveal in Episode 6 that the reason Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) is no longer sheriff is because he's now the mayor of Mystic Falls!

• That same episode, Lizzie took Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) Camaro for a spin, revealing to Sebastian (Thomas Doherty) that Damon had given it to the twins for their sweet sixteen.

• When Josie (Kaylee Bryant) traveled to New Orleans in Episode 6, not only did TVD fans get a one-sided phone call with Caroline but Originals fans got a wall full of photos of their favorite characters when Josie looked in at Rousseau's.

• Of course, the best aspect of this NOLA trip was the very welcome return of Freya Mikaelson, who revealed that she and Keelin (Christina Moses) now have a son Nik, which is presumably short for Niklaus. We also got to see such an emotional Freya and Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) reunion, which has us wishing for more Originals cameos soon!

• In Episode 9, Hope made a casual reference to her old friend Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood), who once gave her advice on what to do about a mora miserium.

• And while this isn't a Vampire Diaries or Originals Easter egg, Episode 9 also showed us Lizzie and M.G. (Quincy Fouse) reading Crisis on Infinite Earths comics. This was a cute nod to The CW Arrowverse, which includes many TVD universe alums, including Stephen Amell, Rick Cosnett, and Chris Wood.

• Another TVD favorite got a shoutout in Episode 11 after Emma (Karen David) told Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) she needed to go help Caroline with the Merge problem, only for him to tell Emma that Caroline could call Bonnie (Kat Graham) instead.

• We also got a great little flashback to the video Kai recorded in The Vampire Diaries Season 6 in Episode 4 when M.G. needed the camera to film Lizzie and the then-invisible Sebastian.

• Of course, that little glimpse of Kai was only the appetizer before the show served us Kai's full-blown return when the Saltzman's got trapped in the prison world with him in Episode 12. Seeing Kai again provided ample opportunities for the show to reference some of the heretic's signature moves, like singing karaoke and leaving video messages — including one in which he shouted out Damon, Bonnie, and Katherine (Nina Dobrev). We also learned that not only has Kai's ruthlessness not changed since we last saw him, but neither has his love of Zima!

• There were a handful of other Bonnie and Bennett family references during Kai's two-episode stint on Legacies, including the fact that Bennett blood is key to escaping the prison world and Kai mentioning Bonnie's teddy bear, Ms. Cuddles, when Josie said she spelled the mora miserium to be invisible. And after Kai does get out prison world in Episode 13, he went searching for the ascendant which he found in a stuffed elephant, giving us yet another Ms. Cuddles reference. (This show, much like Bon Bon, just can't get enough Ms. Cuddles!)

• But as fun as it was having Kai back, the prison world episodes also reminded us of the pain he caused on Vampire Diaries when Alaric had to operate on Lizzie with the aid of a Laughlin clamp, which was invented by Jo (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe). Once the Saltzmans escaped the prison world, Alaric finally got his long overdue vengeance on Kai for killing Jo at their wedding by beheading everyone's favorite villain in Episode 13.

• All the Kai references weren't the only blasts from the past in the prison world episodes either. It was enjoyable to see the Salvatore Boarding House refitted to look like it looked on Vampire Diaries and the actress who played young Josie on TVD, Lily Rose Smith, also returned for flashback scenes at the school.

• After the trauma of the prison world and everything else the Salvatore students went through, in Episode 14 Emma sent them into a noir simulation which she likened to a chambre de chasse, a pocket dimension used multiple times on The Originals.

• Caroline got another sweet shoutout when Josie explained in Episode 16 that her subconscious was a fairytale because her mom used to read them to her as bedtime stories.

• As Alaric pointed out, the spell Josie used to transfer her siphon ability into a coin in Episode 16 was the same spell her mother Jo used when she transferred her magic into a hunting knife to stop Kai from merging with her when they turned 22.

Chris Wood Reflects on The Vampire Diaries' Best Villain as Kai Returns on Legacies

Kai Parker is back, and he hasn't changed a bit.

Tonight's episode of Legacies welcomes back Chris Wood as The Vampire Diaries' most infamous, most evil bad guy. He's been trapped in a prison world created by his witch nieces for the past decade, but in "Kai Parker Screwed Us," he's ready to party once again.

A couple of episodes ago, Alaric (Matthew Davis), Josie (Kaylee Bryant), and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) found themselves trapped in the prison world, all because of the very annoying Alyssa Chang (Olivia Liang), which means they have to contend with whatever else is down there, including their worst nightmare Kai Parker.

Even if you haven't seen The Vampire Diaries in a while, it's hard to forget that wedding scene, where Alaric's pregnant wife Jo was murdered by her twin brother Kai. Kai then later tried to kill Alaric's daughters (who had been magically transported as fetuses into Caroline Forbes, very normal), so you can understand why this family hates him with everything they've got.

Chris Wood says that wedding murder is his favorite evil thing Kai did.

"I mean, it's really, really evil, but that whole wedding thing was pretty dreadful, where he killed his entire family," he told us over the phone. "And I think the reason i would cite that is because it may be the biggest smile we've ever seen on his face in the moment when he's doing it, and that was very fun to play. That's really dark and awful, but it was a great episode."

Wood said he didn't have much trouble getting back into character for Kai, mostly thanks to the writing and the fact that Kai is the kind of completely deranged person who would be thrilled to murder his entire family at a wedding.

"He has kind of no boundaries in terms of what is OK, and what is normal behavior, and he's such an eccentric that he's very freeing as an actor to play him," he says. "No choice is really wrong with him, and the wrong choice would be not making a big one, so that part was easy to rediscover because it's like, oh yeah, I can do whatever I want."

Kai has truly done some of the worst things that anyone ever did on The Vampire Diaries, but we all love him anyway for some reason. Wood can only guess why.

"I honestly don't know. I don't know if I should be concerned," he said, laughing. "I think what's so fun about it is how irredeemable he is, paired with how goofy he is. On a surface level, he seems like kind of awkward and annoying and his sense of humor is really strange. But then he's done all these atrocious things, some of the worst things the history of the Vampire Diaries universe. I mean, he essentially killed Elena. He's pretty terrible."

(For the record, Kai just put a really mean eternal slumber curse on her while Nina Dobrev left the show, but she did get to wake up in the series finale.)

Legacies isn't used to monsters like Kai. He's not an evil Cupid or a dragon or even on the level of the Necromancer, but he's a beast all his own, with a much deeper in-show history than any of the big bads have had before.

"Honestly it was so great to be that sort of unique monster, because the show has a very different approach to this Salvatore-based universe," Wood says. "Kai is very different from anyone they've ever dealt with, and also he has, you know, not to quote the title of the show, but he has this deep legacy where all the characters there have heard the horror stories and know how awful he was. It just presents a really different interaction with a monster, because he is a monster, just one in human form."

He's also a monster who killed Alaric's wife and Josie and Lizzie's mother, so while he's technically the twins' uncle and this is technically a family reunion, it's not a happy one at all. You can imagine how Alaric will react to his greatest enemy: badly.

"[The reunion] is every bit as confusing and full of anger and spite as you would imagine that it would be," Wood says. "Kai loves nothing more than a toy, and for him, someone to play mind games with, to torture, to trick, I mean that's when he feels things. So that's his one fuzzy place is ruining people's equilibrium, so it's full of that."

Josie in particular finds herself going head to head with Kai in unexpected ways, and Wood says the teen witch surprises her evil uncle a little bit, in a way that's almost not so horrible. Almost. Sort of.

"Kai at first still views her as that little kid, the one death that got away. He at first thinks it's going to be easy, and that she's stupid, and he can just get her to do whatever, and then I think there's a weird pride that eventually comes up when he starts to see her fight back and trying to outsmart him," he says. "But you know it's the Kai Parker brand of pride, because it still involves wanting to chop her head off."

Will Kai chop Josie's head off? Will he murder another entire family? Will he prompt another deranged storyline about unborn babies moving wombs, or will he surprise us all and do something brand new?

You'll have to wait until tonight's episode to find out!

Legacies Recap: Who Didn't Survive Kai's Assault on the Salvatore School?

Revenge, redemption and red-hot revelations were all on the menu Thursday as Hope and her friends — plus a few reluctant frenemies — fought to defend their school against Legacies‘ sassiest, most menacing monster yet: Kai Parker.

Masquerading as an old friend of Alaric’s named Joshua (“I was at his wedding, I brought quite the gift!”), Kai infiltrated the facility with minimal effort, though he did need to compel someone to invite him inside. (Am I the only person who kinda, sorta forgot he’s a heretic now?)

Under the guise of an equal “team-up,” he convinced Alyssa Chang (“Big fan of your work!”) to untether him from his prison world, thereby destroying the realm and everyone in it. (He conveniently forgot to tell her about that second part. Oops?) He also compelled Dorian to drag Landon out into the woods, where a crimson-robed archer — presumably The Necromancer — was waiting to shoot him with that prophetic golden arrow.

And here’s the kicker: While all of this was going down, Kai distracted Hope long enough that she only had time to stop one atrocity from occurring, forcing her to choose between saving Landon or the Saltzmans. She chose (gasp!) the Saltzmans, successfully convincing Alyssa to stop her untethering spell before she wiped them from existence.

Fortunately, Landon never really needed his “co-hero” in the first place! Dorian magically (and somewhat questionably) snapped out of his trance in time to take the arrow for Landon, nearly dying in the process. Fortunately, our little baby phoenix grew a majestic pair of fiery wings and flew Dorian back to the school, where he received the life-saving treatment he needed.

Elsewhere this week…

* After helping Alaric and Jade rescue Lizzie from her nasty little fender bender, Dark Josie explained the terms of their exit from the prison world: She could siphon enough magic to create a portal, but one person would need to stay behind and serve as an anchor. Alaric volunteered, but Sebastian popped up at the last minute to take his place. “It’s like I was trying to tell you the night you shot me — some people don’t know what to do with a second chance!” he told Alaric. “I put Elizabeth in danger. If you wish to thank me, take care of her.” (D’aww! Guys, I don’t think Landon isn’t the only “new hero” who rose up this week.)

* Via the magic of astral projection, Lizzie told Sebastian that he might be able to escape the prison world by jumping into Malivore, just as Kai did last week. But that would have also caused Lizzie to forget that Sebastian ever existed, and since she seemed pretty depressed in the episode’s final moments, my guess is that he didn’t make it out.

* Speaking of those final moments, I was honestly relieved to see that the darkness didn’t leave Josie upon her escape from the prison world. Not that I don’t enjoy original-flavor Josie, but Dark Josie is fun.

* Let’s end with the most surprising development of the week: Kai’s beheading! I mean, it’s not like the murderous maniac didn’t have it coming — and I’m certainly glad that Alaric was the one who got to do it, evoking Jo’s name in the process — but I’m just shocked that they actually decided to kill him off. (For the record, I know this isn’t even the first time Kai has been beheaded, so there’s always a chance he’ll appear again, but that felt… pretty final.)
