Thank you SO much for your asks about Josiah! I would like to reciprocate a bit :) What were the days between escaping the Farm and becoming a hero like for Richard (or any Step that you'd feel like exploring)? What was freedom like to him? How did he come to be a hero and in what circumstances did he get involved with the Rangers?

I’ll have to put this under a cut—I love to ramble and rant about Richard. Thank you for asking about him! 💞

Richard was bright eyed and adrenaline driven during his early days after the escape.

It’s worth mentioning, he hit 200 cm (roughly 6’6”) just a year after being decanted, which makes it harder to escape into a crowd. Add to it his bright orange hair and overall intensity? Los Diablos seemed like a natural fit for him to hide in, what with all the freaks and weirdos.

He wanted to make his way towards the biggest city he knew—a place where he could slip through the cracks with more ease than he might in a smaller town or settlement. A few days were spent sleeping in the supply closet of a truck stop before he managed to convince a trucker to drive him into the city properly.

For a few months he kept his head low and did his best to make as few waves as possible. Freedom was overwhelming at first, the inundation of choice and consequence and, even more striking, a lack of consequence when he was careful about it.

Being able to choose what he wanted to eat and when, a nominally small choice, was nearly paralytic when he realized that no one was coming to punish him for “doing it wrong,”

No one cared.

A marvelous revelation that briefly soured before steadying out. No one cared. A liberating invisibility—the loneliness was something he was so used to, it wouldn’t even begin to bother him until years later. More important was the safety and anonymity. It almost was enough to make him feel shielded from the farm.

Vigilante work came quickly, even if he didn’t really acknowledge that it’s what he was doing at the time. Small time interference with local thugs and extortion rings. More than any noble conscious cause, it felt good. Being able to interject himself in dangerous (or semi dangerous) situations and have the result be someone benefiting from it? Someone actually feeling like he’s helped them? Undreamed of. So far beyond the realm of possibility that the first time he was thanked for getting into a back alley brawl it genuinely sent him into a slack jawed silence.

People started to be happy to see him. People felt safer when he was around. It was a giddy, wild feeling.

The farm knew he ranked high with protective instincts—Richard would and still will gladly throw himself into harms way to save someone else. It’s as much as instinct as breathing. Except with his newfound freedom, it didn’t feel like it was being taken advantage of. He was in control of it.

As for how he encountered the rangers, it started purely by luck.

Richard and Ortega met in a corner convenience store completely by coincidence. He had been following a small gang that was harassing local shops and businesses. As it turned out, and what he didn’t know at the time, they were low grade members of a new syndicate that was trying to get started.

Ortega had heard whispers that their little group was just competent enough to maybe have ties to hg, so he was doing his own casual tracking. He followed them into a small pawn shop and was perusing the back shelves, keeping an ear open.

Richard had set up in the side alley, planning on a sneaky snatch and grab, when the threats inside the building sounded like they were escalating. He picked up on increasingly panicked thoughts from both the thugs and the shop owner—Richard moved to intervene, just at the same time as Ricardo began moving inside the shop.

A quick, almost sadly easy, fight later, Richard found himself face to face with the Marshal of the Los Diablos Rangers. In his civvies, sure. But it was hard to miss a man like that.

And Charge was looking at a tall fidgety vigilante with a homemade suit and badly dyed ski mask.

To Richard’s slight mortification, Ricardo recognized his outfit. New vigilantes on the streets were worth keeping track of, after all, and Richard was more competent than most.

They parted on that occasion with a tense (on Richard’s part) and quietly interested (on Ricardo’s) goodbye. Richard was terrifyingly aware that he couldn’t read Ricardo’s mind, and Ricardo was more than a little invested in this new fighter that fit in so well with his own fighting style.

It wouldn’t be long before Ricardo intentionally reached out to ask Richard to team up.

Villisca Axe Murder House

Past midnight on June 10, 1912 a horrific crime was committed that remains unsolved today. Villisca, Iowa at the turn of the century was the typical peaceful American small town.

June 9th was a Sunday and Josiah “Joe” Moore a Villisca businessman accompanied his wife, Sarah, and their 4 children, Herman 10, Katherine 10, Boyd 7, and Paul 5 to the local Presbyterian churches’ Children’s Day service. The Moore children among other Sunday school attendees performed speeches and recitations.

It was a special night made more exciting by the fact that two neighbor children, Lena 12 and Ina Stillinger 8 attended with the family and were given permission to go home with the Moore children for a sleep over.

The church service ended around 9:30 p.m. and the Moore’s and their 2 guests walked home. The children were treated to milk and cookies and then put to bed for the night.

The church service was the last time these 8 people were seen alive. Even today not all the facts are known including who committed the murders. Tragically, sometime between midnight and the early morning hours each person sleeping in the Moore house was brutally murdered.

Two cigarette buttes where found in the home’s attic so it is speculated that the murderer or murderers waited in this room until the family returned and settled in for the night.

The following morning an elderly neighbor, Mary Peckham became concerned when at 7:30 a.m. the Moore house was unusually quiet and deserted. Joe’s brother Ross arrived and spotted two figures in the back bedroom covered with a sheet–he also saw blood.

The town’s Marshall, Hank Horton was sent for and he announced that there was “somebody murdered in every bed.” The murder weapon an axe that had been partially wiped clean was found leaning against the wall in the back downstairs bedroom.

Horton had found the two Moore adults and the six children all in bed, they were covered with bedclothes. Each of their skulls had been bludgeoned 20 to 30 times with the blunt end of the axe.

The Reverend Lyn George Jackline Kelly was tried and acquitted twice for the murders of the Moore family and the Stillinger girls.

In the early morning following the murders he boarded a train in Villisca headed westbound. He allegedly told his fellow travelers that there were 8 dead souls back in Villisca–butchered in their beds as they slept. At the time he made this statement the bodies had not yet been found.

Kelly had arrived in Villisca for the first time on the Sunday morning of the murders. He had attended the Sunday school performance given by the children. Two weeks later he arrived in Villisca again. He posed as a detective and joined a tour of the murder house with a group of investigators.

The authorities initially became interested in him several weeks later after being alerted by several people who had received “rambling letters” from him.

Kelly was the son and grandson of English ministers. He suffered a mental breakdown while still in adolescence. After immigrating to America he had preached at several Methodist churches across the Midwest.

At the time of the Villisca murders he was preaching in several small Iowa towns just north of Villisca. He had developed a reputation for “odd behavior.” He had been convicted of sending obscene material through the mail and had been committed to a mental hospital for a time.

In August, two months after the murders Kelly signed a confession to the murders. He stated God had whispered to him “suffer the children to come until me.”

During his trail Kelly recanted his confession–eleven of the twelve jurors acquitted him. A second jury was convened and Kelly was acquitted again in November.

Several bizarre items where left at the murder scene. The first was a 4-pound piece of bacon that was found propped against the wall next to the axe.

The murderer had taken items from the bedroom dressers and covered all the mirrors in the home. He also covered the entry doors. He left a plate of uneaten food on the kitchen table along with a bowl of water stained with blood.

Some speculate that the murders were actually done by a serial killer. At the time of the Villisca murders over the course of two years from 1911 to 1912 at least 20 other people had been bludgeoned to death with an axe across the Midwest–none of these crimes were ever solved.

The event will start on January 5th at 12pm (noon) and end on January 15th at 12am (midnight). No new starters should be posted after January 10th.

New readers may ask: Who are you people?! Or Where did this start?

Thaza jimmied open the window. "There is nothing you can possess that I cannot take away…" *** All of our heroes started out separately. Thaza O’Rourke sniffed her Guinness. Raised by apes, now the chief “object retrieval specialist” of the Irish mob… but somehow the family matron made that out like a bad thing?

“You know what pigeonholing is, Thaz? It’s when they think you can only do one thing. So I told the boys would give you an opportunity… Sports repair. Waindell should beat Marshall College by three, would make yer ken here in Lenox Hill a lot of money. And there’s a depression on, sweet thing.”

Naomi O’Rourke wasn’t asking. Thaza was nothing but confident, taking her “project fund” in cash and stopping by a newsstand on the way to the train, eager to look up what “football” was. Callahan was at Marshall College, looking to learn from the ultimate troublesome academic, Dr. Henry Walton-something-Junior. He rang the doorbell: dun da dun dun… must not be home. Josiah Patrick Diamond was faring the best. He and Captain Ivanova had intended to paint Ziegler Security Service’s new office, but were distracted breaking in the couch. Unfortunately, the telephone had to ring. The voodoo-empowered detective was needed elsewhere. The call was from a campus security guard, Darien "the Beast" Wilde. (He was a brother of Florence’s agent, unaware that he and his brother had the exact same nickname.) It was college game day, with hometown Marshall taking on the Waindell Silverbacks. The entire town was flooded with underclassmen. The group convened at a crowded sports bar, where JP’s contact clued them in. Some visiting students had gone missing. Thaza, the most socially adroit of the group, empathized with the kids. It turned out they didn’t want to mention what happened because they were pulling off a prank when they heard a roar and got separated! Their friends Daria and Jimmy hadn’t been seen since Thursday night’s caper. The players investigated prank-victim Professor Wyte’s office that evening, finding out that while he was a public critic of football, he was also tremendously, unthinkably boring, and wasn’t involved in criminal activity. O’Rourke and Callahan went back to their boarding house for shuteye, but JP kept digging… Finding Jimmy’s body, and the person responsible! Unfortunately, private detection is a risky job, and Diamond skipped bedtime for the big sleep.

*** Rafe Lancaster awoke in the presidential suite of the Hilton. It was a wonderful morning… Sure, a bit drizzly, but they were about to dedicate an entire dorm to him at his old Alma mater! He had brought his best friend, millionaire mentee Devika, who turned on the radio… Where they were reporting on the death of a college student! He soon joined the others. But what our group had gained in cash and charisma, they had lost in investigative skill. The road to the truth had many detours. Rafe wasn’t universally beloved on campus… In fact, he got an absolute tongue-lashing from one of the members of the football team, for his actions attacking a wedding*! (Rafe is the first player character who started out as a full antagonist.) Completely flustered by someone who he couldn’t bully with money, the millionaire industrialist decamped to the local malt shop. There, his 13-year-old Indian bestie served him hard truths as he drank a wretched milkshake. (Lumpy when it was supposed to be smooth, runny where it was supposed to be thick… It was clear why this place, out of everywhere in town, was empty.) Instead of admitting culpability for his past actions, Rafe went behind the counter, took out his tools and fixed the machine. Baby steps? Thaza accidentally caught wind of Callahan’s reason for visiting campus. Which meant recruiting her favorite sidekick (Devika!) to “repatriate” world artifacts.

“A wonderful taste in spears,” said Dr. Jones. “The Hovitos had something similar… not like in Borneo though.”

Apparently the Scourge of the Kaiser was back from vacation early. And he was curious about the connection between the cat burglar raised by apes… and the college student who had his bones shattered and his blood slurped. Could she please handle it?

After some more digging, the players found the villain’s redoubt. The old Marshall gymnasium was drawing way too much power. Our heroes snuck inside. Rafe had actually been in the building before, decades ago… But it had new occupants. The most notable: a 900 pound ape!

O’Rourke was the perfect burglar for the job. She was able to talk to the ape, Moriarty, who was utterly baffled that a human could speak its language. The gangster laid on the charm, and Moriarty revealed that he had killed one of the missing students and tried his red juice. He was eager to drink more human blood; it was delicious. He wouldn’t kill her, because he had never met a human who could talk with him, but maybe she had some friends he could consume?

Elsewhere, Callahan and Lancaster snuck down dusty gymnasium tunnels. Through a peephole, they saw something unexpected… Hung on a hook, JP Diamond’s trenchcoat! Unfortunately, they also saw the psychotic Professor Remoux, and the missing co-ed!

Thaza tried to slash the dork with her spear, but the Frenchman deflected it with a bare hand! Prof Callahan theorized that whoever was behind the attacks was removing and absorbing life energy. And if he couldn’t see JP, there was only one place Louisiana PI could be… In the machine! Rafe, meanwhile, earned the ire of the great ape, getting grabbed by the peckish beast. And he wasn’t winning a wrestling match with a 700 pound weight disadvantage.

Thaza was more of a burglar than a battler. Which meant everything was down to Callahan, the only educator of Queen’s College Malta. It was the rude Briton’s time to shine. He assessed the machine instantly, even fixing a wire bypass, bringing the dead JP from his current state (no longer zombied and therefore dead) to a state of energetic super coherence! JP immediately grabbed Daria the student, put her in the machine, and brought her back from near coma to fighting fit shape.

Dozens of footfalls came down the stairs… It was the prank-loving Silverback football team! Rafe convinced them, through straining lungs, to rescue him from the evil gorilla. They did. (Odd some people believe it would take 100 men!)

Remoux saw his numeric disadvantage… And decided that it was time to absorb massive amounts of life force. The room began to fill with white light, dirt and dust shaking loose from the ceiling. Small bits of moss and weeds grew and grew and grew! Moriarty rushed to help his boss, while everyone else fled. Professor Callahan stumbled over a bloom of dandelions thick as telephone cords. The group got outside… Seeing an overwhelming organic bloom rushing across campus. And in fact, threatening the soon-to-be “Lancaster“ dormitory! Rafe grabbed his pistol, aimed at a power transformer, and remembered the training of his mentor, a hero known for his clutch last second pistol skills…STEEL EAGLE! The Tibetan Spirit of Brooklyn must’ve been a hell of a tutor, because Rafe took out the power, which stopped the machine… Instead of being ripped in half by nature, the side of the building was blanketed in ivy and crocuses.

Never one to miss an opportunity, Rafe grabbed a bullhorn from a nearby cheerleader and gave his abridged speech, saying that while he could give money to the university, he was prouder still to aid his beloved alma mater so directly. Cheers and applause. ***

“Thaza O’Rourke?” “No autographs please.” It was Darien “the Beast” Wilde. “One of the placekickers was found with a detailed gambling sheet in his locker… Do you have any comment?”

Thaza raced out of the stadium, down the tree line, and into the vines that crisscrossed the campus.

Rigging gambling… Dammit, she should’ve just hired Penny. *In Kiss Kiss, Ratatatat!!

There's reason to be excited about the Steelers' practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers finalized their practice squad this morning with official signings of FB Zander Horvath, LB Tariq Carpenter and RB Qadree Ollison, looks like one of the deepest practice squads the team has had in years.

The Steelers retained nine of their own players, including NT Breiden Fehoko, who has three years of NFL experience. Other guys like DL Jonathan Marshall and TE Rodney Williams have some interesting upsides, especially Williams after an impressive training camp.

But what I’m most excited about are the guys outside of the organization that Pittsburgh brought in. CB Anthony Brown is a veteran, as he will turn 30 in December, but he has seven years of experience with the Dallas Cowboys and could be an option for the active roster at some point this season. Horvath had two receiving touchdowns for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, and his athletic profile makes him someone who could end up having a role in Pittsburgh sooner rather than later.

CB Josiah Scott is a slot corner option, weighing in at 5-9 and 185 pounds, and the former fourth-round pick had two interceptions for the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles last season. Given that he was a Day Two pick with some success in the NFL, he’s a really solid addition to the corner room and someone who could look to push for a roster spot down the road. Carpenter played a special teams regular for the Packers last year, and the linebacker/safety hybrid could end up being a good coverage linebacker and special teams option for the Steelers.

Throughout the offseason, general manager Omar Khan made an effort to add depth and competition among the Steelers’ position pools. That continued his focus on building the practice squad, adding players with potential who have played in the league and also high-potential rookies like OL Joey Fisher, a player the Steelers liked coming off of Shepard, who ended up in San Francisco. as an undrafted. free agent.

The practice squad has a really nice mix of veterans like Brown, Scott and Fehoko who have shown what they can do at the NFL level and guys who have played in the league and shined but haven’t had great opportunities like Horvath and Carpenter. . When you add pieces like Williams and Fisher, who haven’t played in the regular season, they have intriguing physical traits (Fisher ran 4.97 for 40 yards and 1.72 for 10 yards at 6-4, 296 pounds and Williams ran 4.55 for 40). (with a vertical run of 40.5 inches and a long jump of 10’10”) that could allow them to become solid pros, it looks like a truly impressive group.

It’s been a lot of fun watching Khan’s approach to roster building, and it’s trickled down to the practice squad. While the likelihood of anyone on this year’s practice squad becoming a truly significant contributor is low, it’s packed with guys who can play a part and play at the NFL level with the potential to be more than just guys. . It’s a group I’m excited about and it’s a testament to Khan for building an impressive roster.
