“Ugh, blasted plane.” Sparrow grumbled to himself as he attempted to fix up his plane’s engine. He’s been working on it on and off for weeks now and no significant progress has been made.
“Boo!” A voice appeared behind, sounding contrastingly cheerful. As any other person would do in his situation, Sparrow yelped and jumped like he was a skittish cat.
Sparrow turned on his heel to face the one who had startled him. “Scott! What did I say about sneaking up on me?”
“You say a lot of things.” Scott shrugged before teleporting on top of his plane. He looked down at the engine before deciding he didn’t want to comment on it. His tail flicked back and forth behind him as he walked on the plane’s wing as if it were a tightrope.
“Yeah, and you don’t listen.” Sparrow huffed at the teleporter. Scott was unfairly cool and his abilities fascinated him but he could be so frustrating at times.
He teleported right in front of him, causing Sparrow to stumble back a few steps. Scott gave him a wide smile, unbothered that he had startled Sparrow twice within the last few minutes.
Sparrow felt growing self-consciousness build up within him and he didn’t care for it whatsoever. He didn’t want any of them to think less of him.  “Is there something you want or have you just come to bother me?” “Can’t it be both?” Scott tilted his head at Sparrow’s words. He looked to genuinely be asking that question, which was not what Sparrow would have expected. Hybrids seemed to have different ways of speaking but that could just come down to cultural differences. Honesty, he was just glad they could speak the same language in the first place, even if some things didn’t translate well. Different places develop separately, he supposed.
“It can but I would appreciate it if you didn’t sneak up on me.” Sparrow responded with an airy chuckle, unconsciously fidgeting with the hem of his shirt.
Scott chose to ignore that comment and held out his hand. “Come on. I want to take you somewhere.” Sparrow raised an eyebrow at that, not making any moves to place his hand on Scott’s. “Where are you wanting to take me? You’re not trying to murder me, are you?”
“If I wanted to murder you, I would have done it already. Besides, I like you. Why would I kill a friend?” The teleporter rolled his eyes but his tone conveyed his amusement. He bounced his outstretched hand to prompt Sparrow to take it. “Come on, my arm is growing tired.”
He felt a warmth come over him at Scott’s words. Scott considered him a friend! Sparrow was grateful their friendship wasn’t one-sided. He could never be sure if others felt the same way so he liked the confirmation. Sparrow took his hand and Scott pulled him close to him. “Wha-?” “I’ve been attempting to teleport myself and someone else at the same time.” Scott quickly explained as he securely wrapped his arms around Sparrow. “I teleport with my clothes so I am fairly positive I can teleport with another person. I would hold on tight though.”
Sparrow quickly clung to his friend, not wanting to take any risks. He assumed Scott wasn’t going to wait for protests and he was correct in his assumption. Sparrow burrowed his body the best he could into Scott, only letting go when he was sure they had reached their destination.
“Look at that! We didn’t lose or gain any limbs.” Scott proclaimed after doing a quick look over at both of them.
“Was that a possibility?” That idea was terrifying and he didn’t want to imagine what that might feel like. Sparrow’s stomach felt like it was doing summersaults which did not help the disorientation he was feeling. Teleporting with Scott felt identical to when Scott simply swapped places with him. The ending result was the same for it moved him from one place to another so he couldn’t say he was surprised.
“Everything is a possibility. You never know what is going to happen.” Scott didn’t let that thought linger in his mind as he spun around to the kitchen cupboard.
This was the moment he realized where Scott had taken him. He hadn’t been given the chance to ask before. “Why did you take us to your house?” “I wanted to bake cookies with you for the holidays,” Scott replied as he pulled ingredients out of the cupboard before setting them on the counter. He paused before turning back to Sparrow. “You have holidays where you come from, right? Or do I have to explain what that is?” “Oh, no, no! I know what holidays are.” Sparrow reassured him. Based on what Scott has said so far, he assumed they had similar definitions of what a holiday was. “I just didn’t know any holidays were coming up though.”
“Well, now you know! I’m glad we’re on the same page. Can you grab the orange bowl over there? Thanks.” Scott took the bowl from Sparrow and set it down on the counter. “My friends and I all celebrate different holidays but we mix them up into a multi-holiday concoction so we can celebrate together. I usually bring cookies and I figured I would include you in the festivities. You know, since we’re friends and all.”
“Sounds like a fun time,” Sparrow commented as he went to stand next to Scott by the counter. “What kind of cookies are we making?
“Snickerdoodles,” Scott answered as he set a blue bowl in front of Sparrow. “Here, you do the dry ingredients and I’ll do the wet ingredients.”
“What do I add for the-?” Sparrow looked over to where his friend had been standing but Scott was not there anymore. Where did he go? Scott reappeared within seconds, carrying a few different items that he had not been holding before. “Did you really teleport across the room just to grab some eggs?” “Do you expect me to walk?” Scott gasped dramatically, glancing at Sparrow with a teasing grin. “I’m too pretty for that.”
Sparrow gave him an unamused glare before quickly giving into his laughter. Scott was effortlessly funny and he enjoyed his offhanded comments.
He gasped at him as if Sparrow had greatly offended him. Scott’s fake miffed expression soon gave way to his own laughter, unable to take himself seriously.
Their laughter was contagious and so they continued to infect each other. It was a struggle trying to stop and it didn’t help that they continued to crack jokes.
Sparrow had expected to eventually find hybrids when he first set off on his journey but he had no idea what they would be like. They could have been cruel to him and not accept his presence around them but they didn’t do anything of the sort. They were kind and welcoming, and he was glad he could confidently call some of them his friends.
