The Challengers line-up is based on the team as it appeared in their comic book at the time: Prof, June, Rocky, Red and Ace.

I never knew this existed until I saw this cover yesterday. Now I want to track it down and read it, although the reviews I've read have been decidedly mixed.

DC Comics Announces "Challengers of the Unknown"

DC Comics "All In" initiative is bringing back the investigators of the strange and unusual, the Challengers of the Unknown. The Challengers of the Unknown 5-issue limited series will be written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Sean Izaakse. The comic spins out of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special.

The "terror of the Darkseid shock wave has cascaded across the DC Universe…tearing open the very fabric of time and space itself! Only one band of super-scientists have the right stuff to challenge the fate of a universe: the Challengers of the Unknown.

Challengers of the Unknown #1 (of 5) goes on sale on December 18, 2024. The debut issue sports a main cover by Mike Deodato Jr., variant covers by Sean Izaakse and Romulo Fajardo Jr., Taurin Clarke, and Danny Earls, a foil variant cover by Gleb Melnikov, and a character design variant cover by Dan Mora.

it’s such a cool concept to explore bc with the first crisis, the old world died to give birth to the post crisis world. but in this new timeline, the personification of death is dead. those who walk in purgatory should, theoretically, disappear from existence. not necessarily death as much as it is erasure. but the challengers and ultivac are sentient. if they know they’ll vanish from existence bc death is no longer pertinent, why wouldn’t they fight to stay? darkseid is because death is. but now death’s taking a vacation in the absolute universe 😭

I think it's smart how June's lines in these panels work both as a commentary on the sexism the female characters, especially the ones from the silver age like June and Judy, face in the comics, but also work to point at the inequality of the power dynamics between A-list and D-list characters - a recurring theme in this series
