While not physically dependent on Kanohi the way Matoran are, Makuta give them equal cultural weight. A Makuta's mask is their identifier. It is difficult to identify who's who if you are all natural shapechagers and illusionists, so it is customary to avoid altering one's mask too drastically in the company of other Makuta. The Hagah tradition to honor past heroes by wearing masks shaped like theirs is derived from this philosophy.
Masks are never swapped or gifted, with a single historical exception. Icarax inherited the Mask of Shadows, and gave his mask of Scavenging to a lowly Matoran as a show of power. Icarax was too foolish to realize Teridax had just done the same to him.
Masks are also emblems of a Makuta's character, their beliefs and philosophies distilled into a single object. Teridax's coup changed the Makuta from scientists and shepherds to occult chessmasters, but can be thought as a shift from the Mask of Mutation to the Mask of Shadows. Would the Makuta have become isolationist hermit-kings had Krika taken control? Accelerationists and disruptors had Gorast?
Only one of Great version each mask has ever been made*, and it is uknown who made them or the Noble versions rewarded to a Makuta's chosen Matoran. One would think that the Makuta's masks were declared immoral for Toa to use after the Brotherhood's betrayal was made public, but this was established in the Toa Code since its creation. A Toa would only ever be in a position to use a Makuta's mask if the Makuta had just died in front of them, most likely by the Toa's own hand.
*There is one exception, debatably two. Chirox and Mutran share the same mask. Some accounts theorize that Mutran initially had a different mask, and changed his mask in order to torment Chirox. Others say that the two always had the same mask, a symbol of their role as left and right hands of a greater whole. The Jultin is a matter of debate. The Jutin was Antroz's mask, but there are conflicting reports of his whereabouts just prior to the destiny war. A Matoran word for failure is 'spiriah', which is not only Makuta in origin, but constructed like a personal name. It is possible 'Spiriah' is in fact the Makuta of Zakaz expunged from history, and that Sipiriah donned an unpowered Jutlin in order to disguise their identity.
Rahi contain 'tags' within their core essence, instantly detectable and innately understandable by Antidermic creatures, but require a veteran archivist's knowledge to even to begin to comprehend for Protodermics. These tags are believed to be signatures by the Makuta who designed that Rahi species, maker's marks imbedded into their fundamental being. A codex of marks and their associated Makuta are on the Makoki stone, allowing for researchers to know precisely which Makuta created which Rahi. Curiously, there are tags within Rahi found nowhere upon the Makoki stone. The history of the Brotherhood begins with the formation of the Makoki stone, which suggests an early "generation zero" of Makuta born prior to the brotherhood. None of these elder Makuta have ever been successfully identified or contacted.
It is common belief that Antidermis was a byproduct of Protodermis synthesization. This is only partially correct. Antidermis was an attempt at artificial energized protodermis. Both substances are mutagenic, both components of a gestalt consciousness, but while energized is damnably finite, new Antidermis can theoretically be created forever.
The earliest design documents for the GSR were found recently. They revealed that the Great Beings initially wanted to build *6* vessels, at least some of which would have been made from Antidermis. Only one vessel was ever created, but the Great Beings reformulated this initial concept into another failsafe for the GSR. This should come as no surprise though. After all, Teridax's plan hinged on the fact that the Makuta are potentially destined to inherit the role of the Mata Nui intelligence.

Random Bionicle Headcanons and Running Gags
Involving canon characters
Somehow, Helryx always knows exactly where in the room Jerbraz is in and looks him dead in the eye when she speaks to him. Masks that can reveal him don't generally reveal details, so she is the only person who ever looks him in the eye. He has no clue how she does it and it scares him shitless. (Mazeka suspects she can hear his breathing and/or footsteps, uses that to calculate whereabouts to look, and then listens for his surprised breath-hitch when her gaze meets his eyes).
Mutran hates heights
Teridax was generally considered annoying by most other Makuta. Even those who respected his plan generally considered him annoying on a personal level.
Although Skakdi need to work with another Skakdi to activate their elemental powers, the assistance can either be physical or neurological. In other words, they can either be in close-proximity and activate at the same time, or on can just grab the other's arm and then he can use his powers. He doesn't need the other Skakdi's consent to use his powers that way.
Upon returning to Toa status, Vakama is really fucking tall for some reason, towering over the other Toa Metru.
Onua Nuva in his adaptive armour is also really fucking tall for some reason.
Air elementals are usually quite short.
Miserix sounds like Morgan Freeman.
Vican sounds kinda like Eminem.
Skakdi speak with some accent I can't quite identify, but it is rather UKish. I've always imagined it that way even though I have no clue what the accent is. For example, they pronounce Rs "wr". I likely based that on the fact they rarely close their lips all the way (they can, they just don't do it often).
Skakdi move faster on four legs than two, but prefer two legs so they can hold things and to look more civilised.
Avak smokes cigars (despite the aforementioned lip-closing thing)
Lewa is really good at figuring out people's secrets by incorrectly assuming what the secret is, cracking a joke about what he thinks the secret is, and then the person misunderstands the joke into thinking he knows the *actual* secret, and they confess.
There are some implants installed into all Dark Hunters upon initiation. One is the implantation of metal fangs as a backup weapon. Because of this, some people have taken to calling Dark Hunters/Ex-Dark-Hunters "Metal-Mouths".
Mutran can't spell "Kraahkan". In general, he is not good at spelling.
Most Bionicle are somewhat ambidextrous. They do tend to have a dominant hand, although the difference between dominant and non-dominant is way smaller than with humans.
Mutran is left-handed (which can be seen in a recent Bio-Parenting).
Krika is naturally heterochromatic- one gold eye, one red. When disguised as a male Makuta, part of his disguise involved hiding his heterochromia. Now that she is restored to life, she displays her natural eye colour.
Vamprah tends to self-groom via licking when he is embarrassed.
Miserix tends to self-groom via licking as a show of disrespect (ie, if someone is talking to him and he wants to communicate "I no longer give a shit about your opinion, go away", he will just start grooming and act very, very interested in his grooming. He used to do this non-stop to the Shadowed One).
Since their revival, Makuta have regained The Call: Makuta have an instinct to give a bird-like shriek when they feel there are no other Makuta around, and if a Makuta hears a Call, they feel a strong urge to respond. It's a method of locating and keeping track of each other. They had it long ago, but lost it when they originally became essence in armour. They can pinpoint the distance and direction of another Makuta's Call if they hear it.
The Call is affected by mask: Shelek wearers give one similar to the stereotypical "eagle" call (which is actually a hawk call). Avsa wearers give one more similar to an actual eagle call. Jutlins are short, rapid shrills, Felnas sounds like a mountain lion scream, both the Kraahkan and Miserix make a crocodile-like growl that vibrates everything in its vicinity, and I haven't decided the other masks yet.
A smallish canid species on Bota Magna was named "Vahki" and are kept as pets. The name is due to their similarish appearance and how they are often kept as livestock guard dogs.
Spikits can be farmed for their milk, but it tastes awful and needs to be heavily processed.
Helryx has developed narcolepsy due to how worn-out she is. The other Order Members politely ignore her random faints, although they will usually make some attempt to catch her.
I have no clue where tf Umbra went in my HC.
I am incapable of reading Irnakk's name without automatically pronouncing it "EE-nak". I... have no clue why. I think someone erroneously put that in the Wikipedia once and it just settled in my head.
For some reason as a kid I screwed up Matau's name and, until I watched the movies, thought his name was "Matua" (Mah-Too-uh)
Involving OCs
The Toa Metru are god-awful at coming up with original names for things (hence the naming conventions of the island of Mata Nui). This is why Nokama named most of her kids after Rahi: Muaka, Oohnora, Usall, and Goku.
In canon, when Pohatu learns a new thing, he always asks "What is XYZ?" And usually immediately finds said thing. This trait is genetic, and despite him not having raised his son, his son Pohanu, grandson Mikaua, and granddaughter Lonya all picked up this trait independently.
All four of Matau's kids have independently developed some thing that makes them more likely to bond with Nuju: Irunak was, due to a birth defect, born an ice-elemental, Oohnora was the middle of 9 kids and struggled to get attention, so the ever-distant Nuju was the only one who noticed her, and Kekek and Usall taught themselves the language of the flyers to use as a code-language without knowing that Nuju could also speak it fluently.

Barrataak, then and now
If I’m being honest, even though the lore I made for him wasn’t super great, Barrataak was one of my favorite original characters.
He’s going to be playing a pretty major role in my upcoming Fanfic series, Bionicle: Darklands. His past has kind of changed, he’s now a much more ambitious character, and wears a Kanohi Jutlin. He can still Rahkshi powers better than any other Makuta though.

Antroz’s Rahi
Antroz was a Makuta who prioritized honor. He was naturally a fair sport, pragmatic, and relatively cool-headed compared to the rest. In many ways, Antroz was among the more level and sensible of the Makuta… But considering who his brethren were, that wasn’t really saying much.
Antroz was someone who always enjoyed a good challenge- Such as in combat, but firstly in Rahi-Making. To him, variety was the spice of life, and he made it a point not to limit himself to a particular niche nor tropic level… He experimented and tried different types of Rahi, not in spite of the challenge, but because of it. Inevitably, he had his own personal principles and design philosophies shine through his creatures, but Antroz at least made it a point to try something new and challenge himself with an unusual species, every now and then.
He had an appreciation for industry, for the ability to build and create, and shape the environment to one’s hands. Antroz devised creatures such as a type of semi-aquatic mammal, which regularly utilized its flattened tail and buck teeth to construct massive dams, changing the environment to its liking. He appreciated his Kikanalo, which regularly plowed up the earth with their horns to access nutrients, altering the landscape- Or a species of bird that used its beak to diligently carve homes into nearby trees. Quite a few times, Antroz had collaborated with Bitil on Rahi-making, and the two once devised a species of termite-like rahi that regularly constructed massive homes and towers out of the ground to hold their nests.
Antroz was studious, hard-working, and dedicated; This principle was reflected well into his Rahi, who had a certain dignity and work ethic to them, an integrity what have you. He did believe in the idea that life should be challenging, but unlike Gorast, Antroz did not subscribe to the idea of pain just for its own sake. His Rahi worked hard and regularly, building nests, harvesting food stores for hibernation, etc. It was Antroz’s appreciation for industry and worldbuilding that had him appointed to the island of Xia; Miserix understood the Makuta well and knew it was an area he could both appreciate and know how to navigate. The Vortixx respected the kind of strength and leadership that Antroz embodied, and unlike Icarax, Antroz had a certain social tact, subtlety, and nuance to him, an ability to negotiate. Also unlike Icarax, Antroz hadn’t levelled several Xian buildings in a past mission and earned the ire of the Vortixx as a result.
Antroz also enjoyed loyalty. He devised quite a few manner of Rahi that would loyally follow one another, or even outsiders –such as sapient beings- to the end of their lives. The loyalty of these Rahi was hard to earn, and for some was tested by the occasional fight; But in the end, they were ruthlessly helpful. Not mindlessly obedient, nor were they inclined to lay down their lives for a cause, simply just because; They also prioritized survival to a pragmatic extent.
Many of his Rahi often collaborated with others into groups to accomplish larger projects; Antroz made an excellent team leader, and his Rahi tended to appoint a member of their group to follow. The leaders of these packs always had to fight and prove themselves worthy of leading the rest- Only then could the Rahi’s subordinates place their trust so diligently. There was a pragmatic honor to Antroz’s Rahi… They would look after one another, but they could also recognize when a member was dragging them down, and at least kindly put them out of their misery, a sentiment understood by the Rahi that was being euthanized. Antroz’s Rahi regularly clashed, but he insisted there at least be a comradery to them… They weren’t obsessively competitive the way Icarax’s were, seeking to dominate and rule.
No, Antroz’s Rahi regularly got into fights simply for the sake of them, simply for the fun… Often to show off and earn mates, and/or become leader of the herd. Leaders regularly switched around, and losers weren’t exiled and slain, simply demoted and kept within the group. Many of Antroz’s Rahi knew how to work together and collaborate for a greater cause, and they frequently bore the fruits of their arduous labors. Many had the willingness to stay behind and fight to the bitter end, so the rest could escape and also live to fight another day; And there was a willingness to adopt members of other packs or herds that had been left behind.
As mentioned before- Antroz appreciated a challenge. He understood well the idea of balance, and he believed that competition bred ingenuity, that challenge built character, etc. There was always the idea for Rahi to have a predator, or some other species that could counteract them… And Antroz lived for this principle especially. Many of his studious, building Rahi had creatures, predators, and rivals that frequently sabotaged their work, for whatever means. With each species, Antroz would also design another one, with each pair of species meant to keep one another one on their toes, and remain ever-vigilant. There were Rahi species that frequently competed with one another for resources; While others dealt with predators that tore down their nests and hard work, such as a type of Anteater-Rahi for the Termites he and Bitil had made.
Bitil had been upset, he was fine with a predator for his creatures, but saw no use in destroying their creations as well; But Antroz necessitated this in the programming. He believed that creation should serve as a balance for destruction… And while he found creation to be beautiful, he thought there was a certain artistic worth to destruction that was severely underrated. Obviously his destruction was controlled and precise, tastefully done, unlike that of Chirox’s… Antroz DID wield a Kanohi Jutlin, after all. One might say that creation and destruction are intertwined, one and the same, two sides of a mutual coin- As mentioned, his Kikanalo changed the landscape with their horns, but to do so they had to regularly tear up the topsoil. Antroz appreciated clever Rahi who knew how to sabotage and destroy…
Many of his Rahi had pests, scavengers, or other species who knew exactly how to sabotage and destroy what they created, reversing their efforts. There was a species that monitored the hibernation stores of one Rahi, and would then steal the food when they were looking away. The dams of Antroz’s aquatic mammals were liable to being sabotaged and destroyed by a species of aquatic insect- These Rahi regularly fed on the type of materials that went into the dams. These counterpart species weren’t necessarily meant to predate nor compete, sometimes their destruction and reversal of others’ efforts was just a byproduct of another quest entirely.
Then there were the Rahi who regularly tore things down as part of the natural order, but were particularly destructive when it came to urban settlements. Sapient beings who wanted to live where some of Antroz’s Rahi dwelled would have to diligently defend the work they constructed from being torn down. It was Antroz’s way of challenging settlers and forcing them to adapt to the environment to survive... Or else deter urban settling, entirely. Sometimes, this maintained order within the ecosystem and protected nature from outside sources and meddling- Other times, it encouraged and necessitated drastic changes to the environment and the wilderness in order for sapient civilizations to survive.
It was nothing personal… That was a sentiment well-aired by Antroz whenever he created a counterpart species to a Rahi of another Makuta that he felt was unchecked, or needed better supervision. It was also what Antroz said, every now and then, whenever he slaughtered his enemies in combat and conquered them. He was pragmatic and honorable to a degree, but ultimately still a ruthless warrior and among the first to side with Teridax. Ironically, one might say that Antroz let his appreciation for destruction go unchecked, without a counterpart to rein him in. After all, he had also devised a species of Rahi that awoke every few decades, ravaged the local ecosystem to feed, and then went back to sleep while the survivors had to rebuild; It was a cruel yet fascinating means of keeping ecosystems in check.
To compensate, many of the Rahi that Antroz also designed were pioneer species, able to survive off of little and make the most of barren habitats, and facilitate their development into more diverse ecosystems. Antroz appreciated the cycle of life and death, and species that facilitated ecological succession and contributed towards progress- There were species that helped build up ecosystems, but also species that occasionally razed them as well. He DID have a penchant for destruction- Controlled unlike Chirox’s, but still a penchant regardless. Antroz no doubt saw his methods as more ‘classy’ than his more violent brethren.
On a side-note, Antroz also liked to provide for the civilizations and people of the Matoran Universe with his Rahi… But with a catch. He devised Rahi that were highly nutritious or provided much use with their bodies, but were very difficult to find and/or harvest… If other sapient species wanted to yield the rewards and harvest of these Rahi, they would have to work for them. Eventually, Antroz’s species developed a reputation as game for trophy hunting and fishing- Creatures that were caught, with their bodies displayed… While some were simply allowed to be let free and go back to the wild.
There were people who participated in the challenge of capturing Antroz’s Rahi simply for the sake of it, something that made the Makuta swell with pride, triumph, and accomplishment. It’s not often that outsiders and even entire civilizations embrace and fully understand the principles and philosophies that a Makuta puts into their Rahi creations, after all. However, it also led to Antroz’s deadly assumption that when the Brotherhood of Makuta overtook the universe, all of its inhabitants would eventually understand their reasoning beind this, and appreciate the change in leadership… In many ways, Antroz was an elitist focused on the ‘beauty’ behind his Rahi, like Mutran. After all- Antroz was a very charismatic leader, able to rally others into following him. He was eager to make connections and recruit even amongst conqurered foes… Under the hopes/assumption that others would see his way. In some ways, one could call him naïve for this.
