The Butterfly Effect
Chptr 15
⚠️ Trigger Warning for angst/whump
❤️💚💜🩷 🚒🧑‍🚒
There was something unnerving about seeing the strongest person she knew, crumpled unconscious on the floor.
Tam found him cocooned around his Grandmother - sleeping soundly like a child who had sought out the comfort of a parent during a storm.
It all seemed so peaceful, but for the obvious devastation peppered over, and around them. And, of course, the glaring fact that Virgil was, indeed, unconscious, and not asleep.
Her heart panged hard, as she finally remembered to breathe, her chest shuddering with the deep inhalation.
The family didn't deserve this - well, most people didn't; but, it went double for the Tracys. It wasn't so much that they put their lives on the line on a daily basis; that debt of gratitude went without saying. It was perhaps the fact that she'd had the privilege of spending time with the family during her training; breaking bread with them in the evenings, sharing new stories she hadn't heard at the firehouse a gazillion-plus times. Somewhere during their training, Phoenix had shed their associate titles and had emerged as friends; which made this rescue so much harder than her average John or Jane Doe.
"Mrs. Tracy?"
"Told yer a thousand times kid; Sally suits me just fine. Mrs.Tracy is reserved for our shareholders, and Brains - who I've given up trying to change.
"Sally," she corrected herself, feeling a sudden warmth fill her face.
"How are you holding up?" Tam scrambled to unpack her medkit.
"I'll be a lot better once this brave idiot is off me. Can't breathe."
Tam paused a moment, and frowned. Virgil's weight was only partially resting on Sally; his body angled in such a manner as not to crush her. She wondered briefly if that had been at all planned on Virgil's part.
"Level with me kid, what are you thinking?"
Tam had a lot of time for Sally; she was brave, kind-hearted and wonderfully feisty - especially given her age, which she guessed was a taboo topic, here on Tracy Island. The woman was also far too sharp-witted to have the wool pulled over her eyes.
She sighed, continuing to work, as she analyzed the scene before her.
"I think the initial impact of your fall may be the real reason behind the pain you have breathing. Virgil's been careful to lie in a way that would not crush you."
"Sure sounds like him. So?"
"So...we need to check for injuries."
There was a confidence in her voice that she did not feel - or rather, she was confident about things; procedures, protocol, her job. But, inwardly, having not one, but numerous people she cared about (more than she perhaps should, given the amount of time she'd actually spent in their company) she'd admit it; this rescue had her shook. Tam buried the feeling deep, and ran the scan.
"How're they doing?"
Tam looked up from the scan to see the youngest Tracy approaching.
"Alan?" Sally's voice rasped out.
"Sally, you have three broken ribs; but as far as I can see, they've not caused any significant injuries to the surrounding area,"
She passed the med-scanner to Alan, who concurred.
"Well, Grandma; I'd say that's earned you a VIP stay in Tracy Island's very own infirmary. Don't worry, I've heard the doctors there are very good-looking!"
"I wasn't aware that Kip was a doctor too!"
"What? Eww! No!"
Grandma's chuckle was instantly switched for a grimace of pain.
Alan gently rescued a hand on her shoulder.
"Hel-p Vir-gil," she breathed.
"Tam's doing just that, Grandma. Penny and myself will look after you. It'll give Tam the space she needs to properly help Virg."
A hover stretcher, followed by a well-spoken lady appeared. And, before-long, Sally, Alan, and the woman - Penny vanished. Tam couldn't exactly say when. Her attention now firmly on the one member of International Rescue who had yet to regain consciousness.

Lawyers in Argentina have brought a fraud case against the country’s President Javier Milei for promoting a cryptocurrency whose value soon plummeted. The libertarian leader wrote about a digital currency called $LIBRA in a tweet on Friday. The cryptocurrency was aimed at “encouraging economic growth by funding small businesses and startups”, he said, before deleting his social media post a few hours later. His message included a link to a website where the digital coins could be obtained. The domain name, vivalalibertadproject.com, is a reference to a well-known phrase Milei uses at the end of his speeches, which translates as “long live freedom”. Shortly after Milei’s post on X, the value of $LIBRA, which was developed by KIP Protocol, collapsed, causing millions of dollars in losses for investors, according to the financial site Dexscreener. Jonatan Baldiviezo, one of the lawyers who filed charges against Milei on Sunday, alleged that “an indeterminate number of frauds” had been committed.

Hold on Forever by SunInGlory. Rating: Teen and Up Audiences. No warnings. 16,959 words, 2/2 chapters. Relationship: Kip/HR.
Kip hated the sense of desolation in the man's voice, the despair, the resignation at the foundering of the ship that was his ke'ea. No one should have to give up— “You could always stay here,” he offered. “No one would ever know.” The man’s head popped up in astonishment—and, for the first time since coming in through Saya Dorn's pantry, he looked right at Kip, directly into Kip's eyes. (in which the newly crowned Emperor keeps tumbling through to Saya Dorn’s house.)
In the Office of Friendship by astrocryptographer. Rating: General Audiences. No warnings. 3,079 words, 1/1 chapters. Relationship: The Imperial Household.
First Commander Omo suggested that his Radiancy retire, and that was bad enough, but then he just. Kept talking. Imperial Guardsman Elish was going to need a second vacation. If he survived this conversation.
Protocol One by astrocryptographer. Rating: Teen and Up Audiences. Warning: Major Character Death. 18,836 words, 4/4 chapters. Relationship: Kip & HR.
Protocol One: The Unexpected Death of the Lord Magus of Zunidh (the Last Emperor, the Lord of Rising Stars, the Sun-on-Earth, all ten thousand of his titles, his Radiancy, Cliopher’s dear friend)—how it is followed, and how it is not, and how the world somehow continues to turn.
Bloodstained Threnodies by astrocryptographer. Rating: Mature. Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings. 2,113 words, 1/1 chapters. Character: HR.
The Emperor of Astandalas died so that the Empire could live. The Empire in return sustained the Emperor with blood: a perfect, vicious symmetry which stabilized the magic of five worlds. We were never certain when precisely in our reign it could be said that we died. (The Emperor is a vampire.)
Arrest by astrocryptographer, complete series, 72,212 words, 2 works. The Arrest of Cliopher Mdang, rating: Teen and Up Audiences, no warnings, 69,381 words, 13/13 chapters. Acquittal, rating: General Audiences, 2,831 words, 1/1 chapters. Relationship: Kip & HR, the Imperial Household.
When the Last Emperor and Lord Magus of Zunidh declares Cliopher an enemy of the world, a threat to peace and prosperity, a Terror to rival those of the fallen Empire, what else can he do but live up to the legends? (or: the Moon Lady sets a curse on His Radiancy, causing him to hate Cliopher in an inverse of the love he bears. How can Cliopher break the curse?)
with a winged heart by celebros. Rating: Explicit. No warnings. 33,064 words, 6/6 chapters. Relationship: Kip/HR.
"Cliopher. Cliopher. Cliopher." I blink. It's Conju, standing with his hands on my shoulders, and I go to answer him and realize that I am already speaking, babbling, and Franzel is behind him, wringing his hands and looking near tears. I try to focus on what I'm saying, but it's like a stream, light and splashing past me, too quick to hold, not enough to catch, somehow, somehow –  (A few weeks before the start of the viceroyship ceremonies, Kip finds himself the unwitting recipient of a truth serum.)
Inner Guard by rattyjol. Rating: Teen and Up Audiences. No warnings. 903 words, 1/1 chapters. Character: Ludvic Omo.
His grandfather had liked to say that every piece of wood had something beautiful inside it, calm and quiescent like a wingfinger on a cold morning. It took a sharp knife and steady hands to bring it forth, but it took a carver’s eyes to show it the sun and let it fly.
Friday Keeps Coming Next by rattyjol, complete series, 44,495 words, 2 works. Friday Keeps Coming Next, rating: Teen and Up Audiences, no major warnings (temporary character death), 38,198 words, 10/10 chapters. Thursday Won't Ever End, rating: Teen and Up Audiences, no major warnings (again, temporary character death), 6,297 words, 1/1 chapters. Relationship: Kip & HR.
On Cliopher's first day as imperial secretary, breaking the taboo of eye contact causes a perpetual time loop for Cliopher and His Radiancy. What could go wrong?
The Virtue of Being True by electropeach. Rating: Teen and Up Audiences. No warnings. 15,685 words, 3/3 chapters. Relationship: Kip & HR, the Imperial Household.
"You're under an enchantment, Cliopher. The good news is that the protections his Radiancy has placed on you have shielded you; the bad news is that the protections that block the spell are also reflecting it, meaning that instead of you it affects everyone who comes near you. You may have noticed an unusual propensity for candor in your vicinity today?" (A reverse truth serum plot leads to Cliopher having a very strange day.)
The Ones We Call by Name by ketchupblood. Rating: General Audiences. No warnings. 7,222 words, 1/1 chapters. Relationship: the Imperial Household.
He was the Emperor, the Sun-on-Earth, and the Lord of Ten Thousand Titles. For just a moment, he let himself hope that someone might dare to call him by name. Or: his Radiancy realizes that his personal secretary and the groom of his chamber are... friends.
Dispatches from the Junior Secretariat by wingedScribe. Rating: Teen and Up Audiences. No warnings. 62,321 words, 8/14 chapters (no cliffhangers). Relationship: the junior secretaries (Gaudy, Tully, Zaoul, Eldo, Iro, Iri), Kip & HR.
Gaudy Vawen is leaving home to follow his uncle. Eldo Vardes is doing the same to defy his father. Zaoul wants to find the answers to questions only he is asking, and Tully wants to find problems only she can sort out. They collide in Solaara, where they find the Imperial Bureaucratic Service poised to aid the greatest transition in government since the Fall. And also, where they find themselves the somewhat-captive but very intrigued peanut gallery to the lives of both Cliopher Mdang and His Radiancy the Emperor. A retelling of parts of Hands of the Emperor through the the sometimes-comprehending, often-bemused, always-intrigued eyes of Gaudy, Tully, Zaoul, and Eldo as they grow and advance in the Service.
Epithalamion by oliviacirce. Rating: Explicit. No Warnings. 10,611 words, 1/1 chapters. Relationship: Kip/HR.
"Right," Zemius said. "So—when Dora asked His Serene and Radiant Holiness the Last Emperor if the regency ceremony was a wedding, it reminded me of something, and well, Kip, I don't think you're going to want to hear this, but the thing is—it was a wedding." (in which the Viceroyship ceremony was accidentally a wedding)
a buried and a burning flame by savrenim. Rating: Mature. No warnings. 16,538 words, 1/15 chapters. Relationship: Kip & HR.
Cliopher Mdang's hands were stained gold years before he came into the Emperor's service. (Or: the one where Kip went home after the Fall accompanied by Tor, a ghostly man, and returned to Solaara with golden soulmate marks on his arms.)
flies far, far home by nsmorig. Rating: General Audiences. No warnings. 5,576 words, 2/13 chapters. Relationship: Kip & HR.
In Astandalas in the years before the Fall, far from home and desperately lonely, Kip makes a friend. If the Emperor can be a man without a soul then, logically, Kip can be friends with a soul without its associated man. (daemon au, albatross style)
Not a fic. A Fancy-Man and Foreign: A Case Study of Cliopher Mdang by Ariaste. Nonfiction meta, an analysis of the cultural byplay in The Hands of the Emperor. 9,909 words.
soon, they said, if not today by Ariaste. Rating: Teen and Up Audiences. No warnings. 44,417 words, 4/4 chapters. Relationship: Kip & HR.
Cliopher passes the Imperial exams on the first try. It changes everything. (In which Cliopher Mdang meets the Emperor two years after his reign begins.)
one for sorrow, two for joy by Ariaste. Rating: Teen and Up Audiences. No major warnings (warning: imprisonment). 35,528 words, 4/4 chapters.
The Emperors of Astandalas did not have daemons. Cliopher knew this could not, technically, be true. Thinking this thought, even in the quietest whisper in his deepest heart of hearts, was undeniably treason, but…. facts were facts: The Emperors of Astandalas, though worshipped as gods on earth, were each of them born a human being before they were apotheosized by the crown and by law and custom. Every human being had a soul; therefore, every human being had a daemon. So the Emperors of Astandalas must have had daemons. But by tradition and ritual and magic and taboo: The Emperors of Astandalas did not have daemons. (daemon au, manatura style)
hélouzithe, hélouzanth by nsmorig. Rating: Explicit. No warnings. 7,546 words, 1/1 chapters.
In court’s long sleeves, the Astandalan greeting, gripping the forearms, might not involve any actual contact of skin, and Cliopher’s hands are holding his sleeves, but Cliopher is not in court’s long sleeves, and his fingertips spread across the curve of skin before the elbow.
Works containing At the Feet of the Sun spoilers that I haven't read yet but these authors are definitely skilled:
dream only of stars and songs by electropeach, 70k words, 3 works, rating: T.
when every no turns into maybe by Ariaste, 30k words, 5/5 chapters, rating: T.
Lastly: if you have any fic recs for HOTE, please add them to this post!

Fantasy Book Review: The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard
JJ’s rating 4.25/5
How feral did it make me: 4.9/5
My book reviews
So, I wasn’t initially planning on reviewing this book anytime soon as I have gone back and forth a bit on my feelings on this book since I read it in October of 2023. However, with all the horrible shit that is going on in the world right now, I kind of realized that this kind of escapism is sometimes extremely necessary to keep one’s sanity.
I want to start off by briefly detailing why I have gone back and forth on this book. When I first read The Hands of the Emperor, I absolutely loved it. It was easily one of my favorite reads of 2023, I was gushing about it to people, I cried reading it at the airport, I was highlighting my favorite quotes on the kindle and then going back to reread all my favorite quotes. However, as a bit of time passed, I started to think of this book sort of on the level of Parks and Rec. Something that presents a fantastical utopia version of politics that could never be realized in the real world. Like, in the real world, Ron Swanson would not be BFF’s with Leslie Knope. Real life Ron Swanson would have voted for Trump. Similarly, someone like Kip would never be handed Kip’s level of power, and no one who grasped for Kip’s level of power would have Kip’s morals and politics.
But, the thing is, I still love Parks and Rec despite the fact that it’s unrealistic, in fact sometimes because it’s unrealistic, because it presents a form of escapism. And I think that a small amount of escapism is absolutely fine and even necessary at times. I don’t think it’s necessary for all fiction to present a radical plan for revolution, though I do think those works are incredibly important. I think it is okay for a book to just paint a picture of a beautiful ideal world and allow readers to live in that world for a brief time. It’s lovely to just think that there are people out there like Kip, who want to do all of these amazing things, even if I don’t think that the policies that Kip implements would ever be implemented in our world without the people demanding that they be implemented.
With all of that out of the way, here’s a summary. The Hand’s of the Emperor takes place in a larger universe that all of Victoria Goddard’s books are set in, but you don’t have to read any of her other books for this one to make sense. This book follows Cliopher, aka Kip, the secretary to the Last Emperor of Astandalas, who is thought of as a god. There’s a lot of interesting lore around the timeline of this story and the now fallen Empire of Astandalas that is slowly revealed (and I do mean slowly) throughout this book, so don’t worry if you are a bit lost now and there. Kip decides one day to break all protocol and ask the Emperor if he would like to come to Kip’s homeland for a vacation. Kip is from a highly insular small island community that draws heavily on Polenysian culture and imagery. The story basically follows Kip and the Emperor’s relationship, however you may interpret it, as they get to know each other in a new context. It also follows Kip as he struggles to explain to his family why he does the job he does instead of coming home, and even struggles to explain what it is that he does. If that explanation does nothing for you, it’s basically The West Wing meets Moana meets the Scouring of the Shire with queer undertones. Or overtones. Also, lots of great fealty vibes. Lots of longing looks, lots of “Oh how I wish I could reach out and touch him but I can’t!!!!”
What I loved about this book right away was the relationship between Kip and the Emperor. These are two guys who are either in their fifties or are centuries old, depending on how you look at time, and they have spend either decades or centuries working together to make a better world. But one day they kind of stop and both realize, “Is this work all I am? Do I have any friends? Any human connections at all?” And so they both try and reach out to the only person they really can reach out to, which is each other. Kip does have other friends, especially by the end of the book, but there is really only one person who can really understand Kip’s vision and experiences, and that is the Emperor. Here’s a quote from early on that really hit me:
“And it occurred to him, somewhat later, after they had settles into their usual work, that if he, who was the chief member of his Radiancy’s household, had never before dared offer a gift to his Radiancy beyond the tithes and service expected of him, then apart from his Radiancy’s sister, who barely wrote and even more rarely came to court, there was no one else to do so.”
Sometimes, you view someone in such a way that makes you think that they could never need anything from you. What could you possibly offer? But this book argues that we can all offer ourselves, our humanity, our friendship, our empathy. Like, so much of this book is also about the isolating influence of power and celebrity. That once you are at a certain level, people stop viewing you as human, and stop thinking that you need the love and support and connection that every person needs and craves. Kip’s story and character arc is very much about him learning to hold two disparate things at once: his culture and heritage and his personal dreams and ambitions, but the Emperor’s character arc is just about wanting to be a human. It honestly kind of made me think of child stars. People who are formed into something beyond human from a very early age and become disconnected from themselves and from others.
All in all, I absolutely loved reading this book, and if you feel like you need a bit of escapism from the horrors of the real world, this book will absolutely deliver. It is extremely long though, just a warning lol. Like I said at the top, I have a LOT of quotes highlighted that I absolutely loved, but I will leave you with the one that has stuck with me the most.
“One thing I have learned is how rarely we get to stand up for the great things. Or rather: how rarely we know we are standing up for the great things… Public opinion is like the sea. It seems vast, primordial, unstoppable, immutable. In some ways it is. But the individual is a stone.”

Fic analysis 46. All fear gives way
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/53477371/chapters/135356983
Word count: 44,433
Chapters: 14
First posted: 2nd February 2024
Last chapter up: 15th February 2024
Summary:
The note had been short, blunt, and accompanied by a lock of Dora’s dark hair. It demanded Cliopher’s presence, alone, under a certain tree in the Palace gardens, before the first hour of the morning. He was to bring his seals of office.
There had been some argument, of course. Cliopher had overruled it.
In which Cliopher is surprised to find that his Radiancy has less respect for the protocols than for his Lord Chancellor's safety - or his own - and must travel through his lord's memories to rescue him from the ensuing curse.
How and why this came about
All fear gives way started because a friend was going through a tough time and I offered to write her something fluffy.
Fluffy has always been difficult for me. Funny I can manage, yes, but fluffy? I can do fluffy bits as part of longer stories (there’s lots of fluff in the later half of Tenebra) or as the comfort end of a hurt/comfort arc, but it just doesn’t come naturally to write fluff without, well, drama or politics or Bad Things happening too.
I thought it would be nice and fluffy to write a story that included Dora, where moving to intercept Dora was the reason Kip brushed up against his Radiancy and initiated a ‘Touch scenario’ (mind-melding accompanied with gold smudgies). The initial working title of this fic was aDORAble.
It was not, and is not, fluffy.
My friend noted that it sometimes does help to have an incident or moment of drama to get the plot going. I thought - ah, well, if Dora is kidnapped, and Kip goes after her, and HR rescues them both…
The part with the curse that locks Kip and his Radiancy together into a journey through his Radiancy’s memories was unanticipated.
What worked and what didn’t
I entirely failed to write fluff that stood by itself but did, I think, achieve fluff by the end of the hurt/comfort arc.
Having got Kip and his Radiancy locked together in an inner world I really had no plan on how to resolve it. SuninGlory kindly noodled with me at some length. The solution had to come out of the characters themselves and the things they would naturally do - or would find difficult, but manage eventually.
This also became an opportunity to work up an idea that I’d had sitting around in an open gdoc for ages - the embodiment of many of his Radiancy’s separate identities, from different parts of his life, and how Kip would react. It was satisfying finally having a place to bring that together.
Overall I think it worked well and hung together and felt intentional after the fact. It ended up being a heavier-weight fic, and longer, than planned. But in a good way.
Writing summaries by excerpting sections of text didn’t quite work here, as the summary suggested it was purely a kidnapping story and the soul journey element was hidden. When a commenter pointed this out I updated the text to give more of an indication of what’s going on. I still don’t feel like I’ve cracked summaries, really, most of the ones I’ve written recently make me wince. Something to work on.
What I learned from writing it
However fluffy the premise sounds distrust it? Or possibly, don’t try to add the scare at the start. I came away from writing this fic feeling as though fluff and I needed a rematch.
This might have been the first time I really noticed how much it was possible to bring together mid-flight in a story. Letting things evolve to a certain point and then asking, ‘right, how do I get this to a good ending?’ actually led to an amazingly coherent plot, which was possible because I was writing as best as I could into the characters, and then found the resolution in my read of them too. So little things I’d added earlier worked as set-up even if I hadn’t planned it that way.
I started this fic as a livefic on the HOTE Support Group discord server and was part way through when I quit the server. I kept going as livefic directly to SuninGlory, mostly, who was very patient with me dropping big chunks of story on her.
By this stage my style of liveficcing had fully morphed from dropping a paragraph or thought per comment into just writing the fic up in the comment boxes - somehow that felt (and still feels) somewhat easier than writing in a gdoc or scrivener or whatever. I think the small size of the box and the feeling of an audience helps relieve some of the pressure of a blank page and also to make it feel like I can stop frequently - there are lots of break points between individual comments - which makes it possible to write on my phone in small snatches of time.

President Milei Accused of Cryptocurrency Fraud
Argentine lawyers have filed a fraud complaint against President Javier Milei, alleging his promotion of a cryptocurrency led to significant financial losses for investors. The charges, filed in criminal court on Sunday, claim that Milei’s endorsement of the $LIBRA token on social media misled investors, resulting in millions of dollars in losses. According to financial site Dexscreener, the currency’s value plummeted after Milei deleted his post just hours after sharing it.
The cryptocurrency, developed by KIP Protocol and entrepreneur Hayden Davis, was marketed as a tool to stimulate economic growth by supporting small businesses and startups. Investors could access it through a website named “vivalalibertadproject.com,” a phrase closely associated with Milei’s political messaging. The President’s Office issued a statement on Saturday distancing Milei from the coin’s development, saying he deleted the post to prevent speculation. However, critics argue that his promotion significantly influenced the public’s perception of the currency, ultimately leading to its dramatic collapse.
Legal Action and Accusations Against Milei
Lawyer Jonatan Baldiviezo, one of the plaintiffs, stated that the case represents an “illicit association to commit an indeterminate number of frauds,” withJavier Milei’s actions playing a crucial role in the alleged scheme. Baldiviezo, alongside fellow lawyer Marcos Zelaya, engineer María Eva Koutsovitis, and economist Claudio Lozano, who formerly led Argentina’s Central Bank, officially filed the complaint. The judiciary is expected to assign a judge or prosecutor to the case for further investigation.
The plaintiffs claim that Milei’s actions resemble a “rug pull”—a term used in the cryptocurrency sector to describe projects where developers lure investors with an appealing token only to abandon it after funds are raised, rendering the tokens worthless. Additionally, Baldiviezo contends that Milei’s conduct violated Argentina’s Public Ethics Law. In response, Milei’s administration denied any wrongdoing, emphasizing that he frequently promotes entrepreneurial initiatives in the country and that he withdrew support for $LIBRA upon learning more about the project.
Political Fallout and Official Response
Following the controversy, Javier Milei took to social media to reject accusations of fraud, blaming his political opponents for trying to exploit the situation. He claimed he was unaware of the details of the cryptocurrency’s development and removed his endorsement once he learned more. The President’s Office further stated that the Anti-Corruption Office would conduct an investigation and cooperate with the judiciary to determine if any crimes were committed by KIP Protocol or its affiliates.
Adding to the dispute, Hayden Mark Davis, a representative of KIP Protocol, accused Milei of directly causing the currency’s collapse. In a video posted on social media, Davis claimed that Javier Milei and his team had initially supported the project but later withdrew their endorsement unexpectedly, deleting all related posts.
The controversy has sparked significant public debate, raising concerns about the intersection of politics and financial endorsements. As legal proceedings advance, the case could have broader implications for political figures engaging in cryptocurrency promotion and financial responsibility in Argentina’s digital economy.
