But what begins as a mom-imposed ritual of reading Little Women soon helps four unlikely friends navigate the drama of middle school. Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel
Shade is a young Silverwing bat, the runt of his colony. But he's determined to prove himself on the long, dangerous winter migration to Hibernaculum, millions of wingbeats to the south. During a fierce storm, he loses the others and soon faces the most incredible journey of his young life. Desperately searching for a way to rejoin his flock, Shade meets a remarkable cast of characters: Marina, a Brightwing bat with a strange metal band on her leg; Zephyr, a mystical albino bat with a strange gift; and Goth, a gigantic carnivorous vampire bat. But which ones are friends and which ones are enemies? In this epic story of adventure and suspense, Shade is going to need all the help he can find -- if he hopes to ever see his family again.
The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by Julie Andrews Edwards
The Whangdoodle was once the wisest, the kindest, and the most extraordinary creature in the world. Then he disappeared and created a wonderful land for himself and all the other remarkable animals—the ten-legged Sidewinders, the little furry Flukes, the friendly Whiffle Bird, and the treacherous, "oily" Prock. It was an almost perfect place where the last of the really great Whangdoodles could rule his kingdom with "peace, love and a sense of fun"—apart from and forgotten by people. But not completely forgotten. Professor Savant believed in the Whangdoodle. And when he told the three Potter children of his search for the spectacular creature, Lindy, Tom, and Ben were eager to reach Whangdoodleland. With the Professor's help, they discovered the secret way. But waiting for them was the scheming Prock, who would use almost any means to keep them away from his beloved king. Only by skill and determination were the four travelers able to discover the last of the really great Whangdoodles and grant him his heart's desire.
The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge
In 1842, thirteen-year-old orphan Maria Merryweather arrives at Moonacre Manor, her family's ancestral home in an charmed village in England's West Country, and she feels as if she’s entered Paradise. Her new guardian, her uncle Sir Benjamin, is kind and funny; the Manor itself feels like home right away; and every person and animal she meets is like an old friend. But there is something incredibly sad beneath all of this beauty and comfort, that shadowing Moonacre Manor and the town around it. Maria is determined to learn about it, change it, and give her own life story a happy ending.
The enchanted valley of Moonacre is shadowed by a tragedy that happened years ago, and the memory of the Moon Princess and the mysterious little white horse. Determined to restore peace and happiness to the whole of Moonacre Valley, Maria finds herself involved with an ancient feud, and she discovers it is her destiny to end it and right the wrongs of her ancestors. Maria usually gets her own way. But what can one solitary girl do?
Chasing Redbird by Sharon Creech
To Zinny Taylor, life is like trying to untangle spaghetti—she needs to escape the chaos of her family. So when she finds a long-forgotten trail in the wild woods near her home, she resolves to follow it. It's a journey that leads her to unravel the dark secrets of her aunt's life—and her own. And while Zinny chases ghosts in the woods, gorgeous Jake Boone is determined to chase her...
Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards
The magic of finding a home Mandy, a ten-year-old orphan, dreams of a place to call her own. Escaping over the orphanage wall to explore the outside world, Mandy discovers a tiny deserted cottage in the woods. All through the spring, summer, and fall, Mandy works to make it truly hers. Sometimes she "borrows" things she needs from the orphanage. Sometimes, to guard her secret, she even lies. Then, one stormy night at the cottage, Mandy gets sick, and no one knows how to find her--except a special friend she didn't know she had.
I Funny by James Patterson

He's new in town and stuck living with his aunt, uncle, and their evil son Stevie, a bully who doesn't let Jamie's wheelchair stop him from messing with Jamie as much as possible. But Jamie doesn't let his situation get him down. When his Uncle Frankie mentions a contest called The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic, Jamie knows he has to enter. But are the judges only rewarding him out of pity because of his wheelchair, like Stevie suggests? Will Jamie ever share the secret of his troubled past instead of hiding behind his comedy act?
The Wanderer by Sharon Creech
The sea, the sea, the sea. It rolled and rolled and called to me. Come in, it said, come in. Sophie hears the sea calling, promising adventure as she sets sail for England with her three uncles and two cousins. Sophie's cousin Cody isn't sure he has the strength to prove himself to the crew and to his father. Through Sophie's and Cody's travel logs, we hear stories of the past and the daily challenges of surviving at sea asThe Wanderer sails toward its destination—and its passengers search for their places in the world.
Best Friends by Judy Blume

Can the girls' friendship be saved?

Book Review--Silverwing by Kenneth Oppel
I always read the reviews before buying a book, but I knew I was going to get this series anyway. I LOVE bats.
I need to put the "bad" first for this, because the rest of my review is glowing. This is a deviation from my norm, but if anyone's started reading the first few pages and thought, "Oh. No." I want to encourage you to KEEP READING.
So the reason I almost put it down after a couple pages because the beginning really doesn't catch my interest as much as it probably should. It seems like it's going to be a rivalry between Big Strong Bat Kid and Little Runt Bat Kid, and while the characters were supposed to be children, the author sort of used stereotypical child interactions, I guess is how I put it. The rival character is named Chinook, which I dislike. It's not really a great idea to name your characters after Native American nations, especially one that's been so repeatedly shafted by the American government. So I have to take points off for that.
In any case, Chinook has a lot of lackeys, one especially, that pretty much kowtows to everything he says. I can't remember lackey's name, though, because thankfully he disappears after the first chapter and is never heard from again.
Interactions after that are MUCH more natural, and I truly enjoyed reading the entire rest of the book. The main character, Shade, is a "newborn," which just means he was born that year. He is capable and decent at hunting, but is slightly naive due to his youth. This is played with wonderfully in the story, and is even mentioned in relation to the other main character, Marina, who is a year (or two, perhaps) older then him. She knows more, and he even calls her a know-it-all in his meta at one point because of her larger span of knowledge.
This story also doesn't treat adult characters as idiots who have to capitulate to the limited knowledge of their own children. Shade has some role models, including Frieda, the elder of his colony, and his mother, Ariel. As well as a mysterious white bat named Zephyr, who has special abilities that have come with blindness and age.
The plot, in summary, is that Shade wants to see the sun, which is forbidden for bats because of their lack of taking a side in an ancient war. The owls patrol the dawn and dusk for any bats who haven't roosted, and are entitled to kill them to maintain the law. When an owl catches Shade out as the sun rises, the king of the owls demands that his colony give him up so he can be killed. That's sort of another problem I have with the book--adult characters of other species (owls/pigeons/etc) have no compulsion to give children any sort of break. It's EXTREMELY cold-hearted, but I can't really take any points off for that. I'm not going to spell out exactly why here, but we've seen the worst in people lately, and I can't really fault the author for discussing things that are happening, for real, in 2023.
Anyway, the colony refuses to give Shade up, despite the protestations of another bat elder, and this starts a war with the owls.
When Shade gets separated from his mother, he has to find his way to a place called the Hibernaculum, but he's not on his own. He meets another young bat, whom I previously mentioned, named Marina.
They also meet the trilogy-long villain, a meat-eating bat named Goth. Goth is a killer, and the actions of him and his lackey, Throbb, mean I find this book a little inappropriate for younger children. I would personally bump the age rating up to 5th grade at the earliest. He's a killer, and has no qualms about dispatching anyone who gets in his way--as well as keeping those alive who are still useful to him. He's an extremely effective villain.
I do want to note here that one other reviewer was like "bats can't do _" and I want to remind everyone that this is a fantasy world. No continents are named--only places--and the animals have been in an uneasy truce for millions of years after a devastating war. They are intelligent, capable, and interesting. I would love to see more worldbuilding, but the amount we got was plenty for me to be able to understand that this takes place on an alternate, fantastical version of earth.
Without posting any spoilers, I can say that the end of the book is satisfying and pretty awesome, and I really couldn't wait until even the next night to start reading it. I immediately opened book 2 (Sunwing) to see what happened next. This review is just for book 1, though, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I can only take one star off for the beginning and the use of Chinook as a name, but I highly recommend this to both appropriately-aged kids and adults.

The Lost Rainbow: Winx Club AU (as of 2024)
Yes, I am updating this AU for the third time lol. But, with the recent work I have done of imagining the main girls as fairies, I thought it would be best to update this AU once more! :D The biggest inspiration for this is from some talks I've had with @littlechaoticwitch about the AU, especially since she did originally give the idea of my main girls being fairies and came up with a storyline idea for this AU too! :3
This post is actually the first of a few posts for this AU! In this one I'll be going over some general information for the AU and including everyone's magic alignment(so pretty similar to the previous two versions), with another post for everyone's magic titles and then individual posts to go over the characters from each kingdom in more depth. Also, for some context this AU is considered an alternative timeline to the canon timeline of Winx Club, and will have the main kingdoms/countries of TLR translated over into the Winx setting. I felt this was the best route to take with this AU, especially considering I don't see my characters interacting with the canon Winx Club characters much.
So yeah, I hope you enjoy~! I'm putting the info under a 'readmore', just in case it gets a little long.
================================================
- Fairy: Hestia(former valkyrie before she discovered her fairy magic), Amaya, Talia, Meredith, Gaia(a dual fairy and witch), Raine, Shannon, Avani, Iris, Aurora, Noelani(former witch), Demeter

- Wizard: Ignatius, Caelestis, Argento, Archer, Castor, Carmelo

- N/A(either doesn't have magic, doesn't do any sort of combat, or both): Adrien, Beckham(has magic, but his magic alignment is unknown), Vernon, Lian, Apollo(former warrior, does have magic but wanted to pursue music instead)
- Too young/no magic yet: Ashton(future wizard), Zephyr, Murphy, Alwyn(future witch), Beaumont
================================================
Many decades ago, the then-king of Melor had an encounter with an insanely powerful witch during his travels across the Magical Dimension. They struck up quite the bond during their travel together, resulting in them forming a rather passionate affair together. Yet despite their draw to each other the king was never truthful with her, so after one moment of sleeping together and finding out his true nature, she cursed him and his entire kingdom to be forgotten. Once a very powerful kingdom, Melor had lost all previous connections and was since sealed away from the rest of the Magical Dimension.
All the kings since then have done their best to try and break the curse and bring their kingdom back into prominence, but none were as successful or ruthless in their pursuit than the current king, Argento. He is the only one who has actually gone through with leaving their kingdom to find more resources and ideas on how to break the curse, and so far in his short time as king he has done so much. His plans do not just stop at breaking Melor's curse, as he has bigger plans in action to take over the entire Magical Dimension, so his name and kingdom shall never again be forgotten. During his pursuit so far he has also begun kidnapping those whom he believes holds potential to aid him in his plans of world domination, by expanding upon their magical power and breaking their spirits to act as obedient servants to him. This has unfortunately included the two eldest princes from the Elementals Alliance- an alliance that was formed between four kingdoms that had excluded Melor in previous centuries.
With this growing threat in the Magical Dimension, amongst many others, five fairy princesses have come together to help put an end to the terror. They have all come from the kingdoms in the Elementals Alliance, and especially as two of the girls have had their respective brother kidnapped, they hope to not only find them but help out anyone else who has fell victim to these evil forces.

In the YA Animal Fantasy genre of the 00′s there are your Warrior Cats, your Guardians of Ga’hoole and your David Clement-Davies series.
Then there’s Silverwing. Holy fucking hell, there’s Silverwing. The Silverwing series doesn’t stand out to me in that is groundbreaking or particularly poignant or a valid commentary of society or what have you. What makes it stand out is that it’s So. Fucking. Weird.
Like, ok. There’s a blood feud between the bats and the owls. The bats are under penalty of death if they look at the SUN. And the owls and manipulate fire. Also some scary cannibal bat fuckers are running amok being creepy and murdery and the owls are now waging genocide on the bats because they’ve been framed.
And that’s the first BOOK!
Things that also happen in the series: Canada is at war with Brazil. Humans use bats and owls as bio warfare against one another. There is a BAT HELL. Antagonists make pact with ancient Death God who wants to come to the world of the living and turn everyone into zombies.
It’s a great read for Halloween.
Here’s some characters. I LOVE Bats. So it was a joy to portray each of the characters based on their respective species.
Art is mine. Characters belong to Kenneth Oppel bless his soul.

hii i just spent like 2 hours classifying all the silverwing characters you should go read it all :D (disclaimer though I'm not an expert so I'd love to hear other peoples thoughts on this! and feel free to tell me if I made a mistake or missed anything!) im putting it under the cut cause its super long (not like so long it takes hours to read but its sorta lengthy)
Shade, Ariel, Cassiel, Chinook, Bathsheba, Frieda, Yorick, Icarus, Luna, Ishmael, Yara Osric, Jarod, Penumbra, Windsling, Rasha, Mercury, Aurora, Lucretia, Plato, Isis, Corona, and the rest of the Silverwings are silver haired bats (Lasionycteris noctivagans) This was stated by the author, Kenneth Oppel somewhere but I can't find the original source. Marina and Penelope are Eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis), also stated by the Kenneth Oppel. Griffin I guess would maybe be considered a subspecies/hybrid of the two??? I'm not sure what type of bat Zephyr is, the book only says that he's albino. I think he's likely from the family Vespertilionidae, like most of the other characters though. Scirocco is some sort of big eared bat. I'm thinking possibly from the genus Corynorhinus (big eared bats), but he could also be from a monotypic genus like Idionycteris phyllotis (Allen's big eared bat), Antrozous pallidus (pallid bat), or Euderma Maculatum (spotted bat). Goth, Throbb, Phoenix, Murk, and Voxcazo are all spectral bats. The books refers to them all by their scientific name, Vampyrum Spectrum. Vampyrum is a monotypic genus known for being the largest Microbats, and having a largely carnivorous diet that includes other bats. Arcadia is a hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus). This is said when she first appears. Caliban is a mastiff bat. It's mentioned in Sunwing. I'm not sure exactly which species but probably from the genus Eumops, which live in North America. The other genus of mastiff bats, Molossus, live in Mexico and South America. Achilles Graywing is a gray bat (Myotis grisescens). Nemo is a Greater bulldog bat (Noctilio leporinus). He's described to have strong hind claws and a bulldog like face (actually his description is really really detailed but its basically just a bulldog like face). He also eats fish. The lesser bulldog bat (Noctilio albiventris) feeds on aquatic insects, not fish. Java is a Large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus). She's described to have dark fur and a wingspan of around 5 ft. She also says that she is small for her species. The only other species with a wingspan of over 5 ft is the great flying fox (Pteropus neohibernicus), which has lighter fur unlike Java's. Another reason I think she's a large flying fox is because Java is the name of an island in Indonesia, where large flying foxes live. great flying foxes live in New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago. Dante is described to have large pale ears, and his fur is streaked with light and dark fur. he also has a crest of lighter fur around his neck. His nose is described as "bulbous". It's an unusually detailed description. It's even harder to figure this one out because his species could literally be from anywhere, unlike other characters, who all come from a specific place (like North America for the majority of the characters). All we know about him is that he fell into the Underworld. To make it even more complicated, he's over 1,000 years old, so his species may not even exist anymore. I looked through the lists of extinct bats but found nothing that resembles his description. My best guess is that he's somehow related to the spotted bat (euderma maculatum), which fits most of the description except for the bulbous nose part, or maybe to one of the Phyllostomid genera such as Artibeus, Chiroderma, Platyrrhinus, Uroderma, or Vampyrodes, which all have white stripes and nose leaves. A Spotted bat seems more likely though. And Lastly, the prehistoric bats. Darkwing takes place around 65 million years ago, during the Paleocene epoch. The oldest bat fossils date back to the Eocene, only 52.2 million years ago, but Kenneth Oppel based Chiropters off of existing fossils, so the prehistoric bats are likely to be similar to one of the existing prehistoric bat genera. Dusk has two claws, like modern flying foxes, and is insectivorous. He can also echolocate, which is not a skill that has been found in prehistoric bats, but some scientists believe that Pteropodidae (flying foxes) and the other families in the suborder
Yinpterochiroptera evolved from a common ancestor that could echolocate. It's thought that flying foxes
eventually lost the ability through evolution as they developed a more frugivorous diet. It's also noted that the artwork of the Chiropters in Darkwing makes them look very similar to flying foxes with their long fox-like snouts, suggesting that Dusk is some sort of Yinptetochiropteran ancestor. It can also be noted that the island Dusk lives on is covered in Sequoia trees, though they may have grown in different places 66 million years ago, so I'm sort of ignoring that. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that Dusk can be classified in any genus of prehistoric bat, since the bats in Darkwing are the author's personal take on what these bats might have looked like, and aren't supposed to be a specific species. Dusk's anatomy is similar to that of Icaronycteris index, a 52.2 million year old species that had two claws, looked like a flying fox, and was thought to have echolocation. Palaeochiropteryx is also a contender, as it has two claws, was insectivorous, and probably had large ears and echolocation. It thought to be more closely related to the suborder Yangochiroptera, as opposed to Yinpterochiroptera. I'm not a bat expert though, so Dusk could very well be an ancestor of Yangochiroptera bats.

IncStarscwho do you feel would have pets? Richard strikes me as someone who maybe would have a golden retriever or a corgie. Or maybe rodents. Like gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs or a pet rat. _Totally didn't base it where he gets snarfed by a giant snake_
Tumblr media
Richard Aiken; loves golden retrievers. His parents had one when he was a kid which he dearly loved. But due to his job, he doesn't have the time for a pet that requires so much attention and training. To his 22nd birthday, Bridgette got him a hamster which he called "Spinks".
Kevin Dooley; definitely has a green iguana and a bearded dragon named "Buster" and "Little Kevin". Ever since Kevin was a child, he loved dinosaurs and always wanted to have reptiles as pets. He even considers getting a snake.
Kenneth Sullivan; owns two dogs. A Malinois named "Kayla" and a German Shepherd named "Zephyr". Aside from his children, they're his pride and joy which he put a lot of effort into training. He even fosters orphaned puppies from time to time.
Enrico Marini; has a poodle named "Lady". He got her from an animal shelter after his kids kept bothering him for a dog. He also has two persian cats named "Lulu" and "Snow". Like all dads, he was against them at first, but eventually warmed up to them and now they're inseparable.
Barry Burton; owns a Saint Bernard named "Beethoven" and four bunnies named "Spot", "Bubbles", "Fluff" and "Nibbles". They have their very own spot on the sofa and even bowls with their names on it. Bubbles likes to go on walks and always goes with Beethoven and Barry. S.T.A.R.S. calls them the three B's.
Joseph Frost; grew up on a farm and therefore has always been around animals of all kinds. He doesn't own any pets, at least not officially. But he takes great care of all the stray cats and pigeons in his neighborhood as well as the raccoons. They often follow him to the RPD and even wait outside for him.
Forest Speyer; calls a tarantula named "Blondie" his own. She's very tame and even allows him to pet her. Forest often jokingly refers to her as "the only woman in his life", because every lady whom he had told about "Blondie", has freaked out.
Jill Valentine; has a Chocolate Lab Mix called "Marnie". She's a rescuee and Jill's baby. Jill has even brought her to the office a few times. Marnie seems especially fond of Joseph, who always carries treats with him.
Brad Vickers; owns a tortoise whom he called "Mikey". He found him on his way home a few years back and after several, unsuccessful weeks of trying to find his owner, decided to keep the little fella. He lets Mikey roam freely around the apartment, so better watch your toes.

Reasons I Love Brian
I’ve already talked about DHaF, Belinda, Ikuisuus, Juma, Chippy, DHaFN, Ruby, Soul Surgery, Jason Zephyr, The Forest, Amelia R., Cadence, Vampire Idol rewrite, Elizabeth, Nane, Humanity’s Demon, Demonic,  Samuel, Katherine A, Clarissa, Humanity’s Demon 2.0, Satan, Lucifer, Azrael, Fredrich, Lilith, Apollyon, Aamon, Master,  Raguel, Michaelveli, Catrina, Zadkiel, Kenneth, Franklin, The Magic  Jeweler, Chip, The Origin of the Magick Shoppe, Ariel, The Fall of the  Sirens, Glorie, Maloi, Glimmer Like the Stars and Mrs. McRoy, The  Curse of the Bloody Lady, Mary, Nyr Death Experiences, Betrüger, Wahr, Vergil, Maxine, Voyage of the Wisp, Nash, Mikah, Roger, Francis, Lindora and Winnifred, Origins of the Hybrid Species, Victoria, Maxie and Amelia and Kyle.
Here are some reasons why I love Brian:
he was the first person (other than little Amelia) that showed Kyle what love was
he was Kyle’s first paternal figure without him even realizing it (without Kyle realizing it, not Brian)
he is (was) a total sweetheart and will be forever burned on Kyle’s heart because of the love and compassion he showed
he was the one that introduced Kyle to the concept of a wolfman and is perhaps the reason Kyle didn’t go insane when he learned he WAS a wolfman (again, Kyle not Brian)
he is super accepting and inclusive
it is easy to make him laugh & smile
he doesn’t let hardships bring him down (not to say he doesn’t get down but he is always optimistic, even though the hard times)
no matter what, he never stopped believing in Kyle, especially after the Bear Incident
If you have anything to add, please feel free to!
Here is a picrew I made of Bri when he was younger:

Note
Can I get a masculine or neutral name that sounds kinda fairy like and means something like fire?
Here’s some that hit both marks: Aden/Aiden, Bren, Keegan/Keighan, Blaze/Blaise, Rivin, Kenney/Kennett/Kenneth, Ember, Bryning, Apollo, Kiran, Phoenix
And some that don’t specifically mean fire: Evren, Aslan, Flynn, Zephyr
