Hey now that Jennifer Ehle is being talked about, I'm going to take this opportunity to tell you about a little film she was in called Bedrooms and Hallways. It's from 1998 and it's basically a rom-com that explores homosexuality, heterosexuality, bisexuality (tho I don't think they ever explicitly used the term?), monogamy, polyamory, and, especially, masculinity - but, like, in a fun comedic way.
It's got Kevin McKidd as a gay man who starts dating a woman (Jennifer Ehle) even as he's attracted to another man he met at a men's group (portrayed by James Purefoy). It's got Tom Hollander and Hugo Weaving portraying two gay men who end up in a relationship. Simon Callow and Harriet Walter portray a husband and wife who run a men's group and a women's group (respectively) - and it's hilarious. Con O'Neill has a small role as a member of the men's group.
From what I remember (keep in mind I last watched this, like, 15 years ago)...but from what I remember, it's definitely interested in playing around with definitions of gender and sexuality - that's a big part of where the story and characters and humor come from - the characters messily trying to figure out who they are and what they want both inside and outside the social boundaries they've lived under up to that point. In this film, sexuality and gender roles are fluid. But it also only goes so far with that - I don't think there are any trans characters. And I don't think anyone mentions bisexuality explicitly (though I could be wrong about that).
But it's worth watching if you want to see a messy queer rom-com from the late 1990s.
