a taemin-appreciating loveletter on XLOV going viral with “1&only” right now as a genderless concept group which i absolutely love! have you seen how incredible they are? at a first glance i could already feel that they can shake things up, make a difference and enter a new, exciting cultural trajectory. and that was just the first watch. it gets even better from there! XLOV just leaves you wanting more immediately: the outfits, the dance, the sets, the beat, and so many killing choreo parts it’s ridiculous. what - or who - led to this beautiful culmination of art, kpop history-wise? i think we all know. 

i wish i could thank taemin and shinee every day as due to their pervasive influence, kpop (think hyunjin, jimin, chungha, kai, haechan and more mentioning taemin’s impact on them) is so ahead of the curve and a female or neutral gaze on things is pretty much established, breaking the mold is celebrated, both a rarity. a group like this, then, is long overdue. to me, someone as courageous as XLOV (as a group comprised of otherwise often conflicting nations on top of that, uniting japanese, chinese, korean and taiwanese members as a statement) is what we’ve been waiting for. XLOV says, why not, what’s stopping everyone else? utopia is possible! they simply came to drop jaws without any compromise and delivered.

XLOV doesn’t have a “shinee” signature nor do they need it (nor can shinee be truly, fully copied ever), nevertheless i see what inspired them to go all out. taemin has never tried to pander to an existing status quo, much less emulating a stereotype-laden ‘straight’ or ‘gay’ pre-made mainstream formula, which i think is astounding at his scale of impact, in this politically challenging age. i think that art directors showcase an increasing feel for it, and we can slowly create a safe space where idols can come out or break free from oppressive standards like XLOV, even against the escalating odds of korean society and whatever backlash is there. taemin shows: you can prevail. 

he has always taken an androgynous, bi-friendly, fluid, whatever you want to call it aesthetic for granted. that’s how ‘idols from the future’ like seonghwa, g-dragon or felix are created and i love it - it proves how the radicalizing shift in masculine norms over the last decade is not a thing of absolutes (think about CL vice versa, who has always had a successful alpha woman concept) and encourages everyone to do their thing outright. so i was giddily happy to see ppl discussing and protecting XLOV everywhere with their amazing sensual visuals and THAT incredible choreo. it’s a must-watch for pride month and beyond if you love unisex as a concept in kpop.

NEED to see the two ENAs get drinks together. Barbie would have dragged YT Ena to the Purge Event after work hours (despite the latter's stated allergy to big crowds) just to have the tables flipped on her the second they start ordering rounds (she knows the strongest elixirs by name and insists on ordering shots for both of them 😅). XD

IDK if YT Ena's tolerance is necessarily higher than Barbie's, but she definitely carries her drunkenness a bit differently. She's the LOL-go-with-the-flow to Barbie's I-NEED-TO-GO-HOME-IMMEDIATELY-I-HAVE-WORK-TOMORROW. They'd be quite the pair.

Honda Today G, 1985. The Today heralded Honda's return to the kei car market after a 10 year hiatus during which time their only offering there had been the Acty van and pick-up. The car’s minimal overhangs and a wheelbase of 2,330 mm (91.7 in), the longest of any kei car at the time, meant the passenger compartment took up over three quarters of the car's length. It was powered by the Gold Wing-derived water-cooled OHC 545 cc Honda EH 2-cylinder engine producing 31 PS shared with the Acty.

My first official fully colored (and shaded), fully story boarded Cinderella Boy fan animatic will uploaded TONIGHT as a sorta early Valentine's!!❤️ I am so excited for you all to see it! The photo above is a sneak peek at the video which will be titled "neon Pegasus" after the song by Perry Gripp as is the song Punko said in the first youtube stream to be Chase's theme song!! So full disclosure, when Power of Potluck was first announced and I saw the preview of ENA with her blue side having returned, I was almost a little... disappointed? Like, I had this feeling of "Why couldn't she have just had her Happy ending in Temptation Stairway where she and Moony got to keep their new favored forms forever? Is this a cruel rule of the status quo that tortured souls like Ena's can never heal?"

But then I watched the episode when it premiered, and... I got it.

For starters, the joy Ena received from Runas was only surface, skin-deep you might even say. Whatever's gone on in her life to make her that way didn't suddenly disappear with her sad side, it simply went quiet for a little while after making her wish.

Also, and this is more of a headcanon, but I figured that maybe any wishes made to the Great Runas only exist while those making their wishes dwell within it, therefore when Ena and Moony finally went back home after their little 10k-year sabbatical, they immediately reverted back to their original selves. Any so-called "progress" Ena made on the other side in regards to her mental health basically went away after she left. Her wish was voided and her sadness returned.

In canon, it would seem that she carries a bit of shame over her sad side's outbursts. And if my hc has any truth to it, the blow-back from all her sadness coming back to her was probably all the more jarring and painful for her to live with. Naturally she would grasp at the first thing that would help her hide her sadness away from people: the mask. And like her Runas wish, it probably worked for a while! She was normal again! For a while.

Her wish in TS numbed her sadness. The mask numbed her emotions fully. She tried to take shortcuts to healing her sadness for everyone's comfort and convenience (including her own), but none of them stuck. None of them were actually making her feel better. Only when she decided to take the uncomfortable steps of seeking out real help for her emotions, in this case finding and speaking to the therapist in POP, could she really begin that healing process in earnest.

So, like, I get why TS could not be the last episode of the series. I get why POP was made. In fact, POP is now one of my favorite S1 ENA episodes next to TS. Certified Good For Her™ Cinema, in my book.

In regards to my own headcanons and past artwork, I think all the stuff I've drawn of her and Moony in the past can still comfortably exist without having to pull too many strings. Although I think I'd have to leave their fankids behind in the Great Runas' Domain. :n( Though whether they stayed behind willingly or were simply not allowed by the Powers That Be to leave with their mothers... idk if I'm THAT cruel, but who knows. ;n) Regardless, canon doesn't mess with my fanon timeline too much, not yet, anyways.

Either way, I had to refresh Ena's post-series look to accomodate for her blue side returning. I also just wanted to see what she'd look like with that bobbed-hair-with-long-braids look, I thought it'd suit her vibe of embracing her different sides, being more at a more natural emotional equilibrium. I also also thought it'd be cute if Moony gifted her the earring I used to draw her humanoid form wearing.
