A tidy hiking trail wound up and around the boulders, with well-maintained stairs leading to the top. He led her past the rock spa, past the clearing where yoga classes gathered, to a small rocky outcrop under a sprawling shade tree.

“Open your eyes! The view is incredible up here.”

She opened her eyes, just a peek, keeping her gaze on the far horizon and not the steep hundred foot drop below them. Her safe and protected suburban life had never given her the chance to explore whether she was afraid of heights. Now, she learned, she was!

“Don’t let go.”

“Not a chance,” he said. “But you know, we’re still ten feet away from the edge.”

“Ha! Ten feet is not far enough! What if you got dizzy? What if you slipped? What if the wind blew really hard?”

“Hmm,” he mused. “You know what’s funny? Now that I’ve met her, I see a lot of your mother in you.”

Down below, JoJo had made fast friends with Jack and Nessa’s boys. They worried about her sometimes—she could be feisty and aggressive, and her little friendships had been hit or miss. But out here, on the road, in the wild, with these feral children of other feral families, she had found a natural fit.

“That was a good climb,” Jordan said. “Really good. I don’t know, I think you’re my good luck charm.”

“Aww, don’t say that. You should take credit for your hard work,” she said. “But… I only wish I liked watching you do that more.”

“That’s okay, you don’t have to watch. But it’s safe, we’re on ropes. You can’t see them from down there, but it’s safe.”

“It’s just a lot higher than I thought it would be. And it’s not even the biggest one? The one in Japan is higher?”

“Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. We’re not in Japan yet.”

“One thing more.” Maria pulled something from her pocket. “I bought this in the gift shop. You’re not allowed to say no.” She didn’t hand it to him, she just took his keyring from his pocket and slipped the tiny flashlight onto the ring.

He laughed. “If I had a bad fall and nobody found me, the dark is the least of my worries. All the scavenger animals out here, coyotes, mountain lions, vultures…”

“Are you trying to make me feel worse about this?”

“Sorry.”

“Well, then maybe the dark won’t be another worry.”

“Right, I’ll be able to see which animal is about to eat me.”

“Stop it,” Maria laughed. “And maybe we’ll put a GPS tracker on you, too.”

“You can if you want.”

“But don’t climb alone.”

“I never would. But thank you. I’ll cherish it.”

As the sun passed behind the rocks, night fell swiftly over the park, and it was time to call the group to dinner.

David Hammons’ ‘Concerto in Black and Blue’ in Los Angeles

A primary factor in the experience of this work is whether you arrive alone or with others. 

The phone goes in a neoprene bag that secured by a magnetic fastener, similar to those that used in retail for security tags on clothing. You get to keep the bag, a squishy reminder of addiction, though I never had the desire to photograph this experience. Near the door is a tray filled with these small, single LED keychain lights, which the manufacturer claims produce 12 lumens (which is nearly the brightness of a "standard" candle). 

You enter through a thick curtain into darkness. Squeeze the light, make out the walls, then darkness. A very dim EXIT sign. When you squeeze the light, the circle of light is blue. After the first few squeezes, in the dark, my eyes were seeing forms that were tinted blue.

I have to admit my experience was influenced by an IMAX screening of “Sinners” several days earlier. Wandering around empty galleries, each squeeze, a tiny part of my brain expecting a bloody vampire face will be right there in the circle of blue light.

In that context, I spent long minutes in near darkness. I’m familiar with the layout of Hauser and Wirth, so it didn’t take too many squeezes to get my bearings. I knew enough about the work not to expect any obvious physical alteration of the space. It becomes an experience of HVAC, one gallery quite cold, another just right. Ducting rattles. I flashed the light upwards, the converted warehouse rafters, a skylight that has been covered, but not perfectly. No long limbed Nosferatus crawling. The sounds of the street filter in. 

I’ve been in many darkened art galleries, a crutch leaned on by many, whether or not the art involved was projected light on walls. Standing in the large empty gallery in the dark for ten minutes, "Minamidera" by James Turrell / Tadao Ando on Naoshima island came to mind. You enter dark space you enter and as your eyes adjust, a scrim outlines a shape that is difficult to sense the distance or size of. The form becomes a single chord.

When another person finally arrived, I couldn’t help but flash in their direction, so that I wouldn’t be their vampire. Hammons’ music at this point is two ships pinging each other with flashing signals.

Finally a group. Flickering blue lights in the next gallery. The concerto! Visually, you get what is promised in this video, but without the music or environmental sounds.

The blue light keychain has a tiny switch on it. One person in this group discovered the switch keeps the light on like a standard flashlight. 12 lumens in complete darkness is bright. From the next gallery, the constant blue light no longer registered as blue, but just as light. This was punctuated by blue flashes. I couldn’t hear their whispers, but it seemed like the man who had used the switch had taken it upon himself to lead his group around, until they found the ramp to leave. 

Then it was dark again.

Ok: I'm not paid for any of this stuff. It's all things I bought with my own money. I do not have affiliate links, it's merely my personal opinion which is, of course, flawless and correct in every situation.

Starting out with clothing:

Cooling Blanket

Weirdly these work. You can grab them on Amazon. You're looking for the Arc Chill technology. They work by being silky and sheer on one side which contacts your body. The other side is fuzzy and acts like a heatsink. They'll drop the apparent temperature by several degrees.

Cooling Shirt

There are probably a bunch of these if you know that they exist. The ones I use are the UniQlo Airism stuff. It's like personal air conditioning.

Cooling Fan

It's a fan. It's electric and it's quiet. What's not to love? Aha BUT it's actually for clipping to the handle or fame of a baby stroller. So it's got batteries! Meaning you can clip it to a desk edge, bed frame etc. Recharge with USB, use it as a power bank, take it on your commute etc. They have stepless speed controls in some cases, or even LEDs for camping. Which turns out to be quite handy for doing your nails or reading small print. And because they're designed for use on babies, they tend to be super quiet. Great if you work in a call centre where you can't plug anything in, and they turned off the aircon to save money!

Personal Orb

A small, golf-ball sized glowing sphere that uses magnets to attach to its charger or any metal surface - Including some of those magnet plates you can stick inside or under cupboards, onto walls etc.

It has an app for configuring the lighting patterns and colours, checking the battery etc. but will happily run without it. Is dimmable and can output a nice low warm-white light or enough light to read by (Enough to illuminate the room to be honest).

Because it remembers it's last on-state you can set it to dim red and click it on and use it at night to avoid waking your SO. Can be locked and thrown in a bag as a way to illuminate your bag, hotel room, extra light in a bathroom (They're waterproof!!), camping, under-shelf lighting... I throw mine in the washing machine and dryer to see if I left anyting inside. You can even use a magnetic hook to hang it up (amazon has plenty).

Also... day to day it's a fun alternative to turning lights on. It's got that 'Walking with a candle' vibe without the 'oops burned the house down'.

Also... look at this thing. It's in rainbow mode here, and about three times life size.

$20 from olight, who will most likely throw in a keychain flashlight if you're a new customer. DO get the charging cable. It's the only way to charge it.
