"Pandi" is the name of the protagonist of the lyrics, literally meaning "expect brother". Parents in ancient China preferred sons when they were having children. So, if their first and even second child were girls, they often superstitiously named them 盼娣/pàndì (also 顺娣/shùndì and 来娣/láidì in the lyrics, and more commonly 招娣/zhāodì), hoping that their next child would be a son.
